Se acuña el término “esteatohepatitis no alcohólica (EHNA) en 1980 por Ludwing y colaboradores.
Enfermedad hepática: niveles anormales de enzimas hepáticas + evidencia histológica de hepatitis alcohólica en pacientes sin antecedente de abuso de alcohol.

Caracterizado por la acumulación excesiva de grasa hepática, asociada a resistencia a la insulina.
Presencia de esteatosis >5% de los hepatocitos.
En pacientes que no consumen alcohol o lo hacen en cantidades no tóxicas (≥30g/día: hombres y 20gr/día: mujeres).
Manifestación hepática del síndrome metabólico**
