Municipal Agent Notes By John Sullivan

This advise comes from Steven R. Zeiler, MD, PhD,

head of stroke research at Johns Hopkins Medical

Center in Baltimore, writing in the February 2018

issue of Bottom Line Personal. If you know or sus-

pect you’re having a stroke, it’s critical that you get

to an emergency room ASAP, Dr Zeiler cites two im-

portant new findings: 1. The sooner you begin rehab

-every second that you save may stop precious brain

tissue from dying-the greater your chances of recov-

ery. In animal studies in a lab, waiting just one week

to start rehab led to significantly worse outcomes. 2.

A certain medication can prevent that stroke recov-

ery window from closing too quickly. Dr. Zeiler rec-

ommends asking about the drug FLUOXETINE. Re-

cent research as shown that this drug-an antidepres-

sant also known as PROZAC-started within one day

after a stroke not only improves recovery but also

extends the length of the recovery window. Other

drugs in the same class also seem to improve stroke

recovery, but FLUOXETINE is backed by the most

data. Dr. Zeiler advises-don't just rely on rehab ser-

vices, but endeavor to actively engage your brain by

playing games on a tablet, working on puzzles or

having a real conversation. You want as much of

your brain back as possible-so use it as soon as possi-

ble. While these measures are important during the

emergency phase, Dr. Zeiler points out that many peo-

ple who have had strokes can continue to improve for

months and even years. So never give up!

Best Regards, John

John’s Tip of the Month

The University of California, Berkley Wellness Letter

advises that, ounce for ounce, green peppers have three

times much vitamin C as oranges. An red and yellow

peppers have twice a much vitamin C as green ones: a

whopping 170 milligrams in 3 ounces. Green peppers

also supply some beta carotene, but the amount in-

creases greatly as a pepper matures and turns red or

yellow. Moral: Choose red or yellow peppers.

Dear Readers,

My article this month is much different than I planned to

write for April. It has no humor or funny stories of my

past days living my life here in Windsor Locks. It’s about

how your life changes in a split second when you least

expect it. That is exactly what happened to me on Sunday

morning January 28th, 2018. My daughter and son-in-law

told me the sad news that my oldest son Peter, died that

morning from a massive heart attack. How is that possible

I asked myself? Peter was never sick, always had a smile

for me, always kissed me when I visited at the garage. The

last time I saw Peter was Christmas Eve at his brother

Tonys’ house. The whole Giannelli clan was there having

fun, laughing, great food opening gifts, wishing everyone

a “Merry Christmas” when it was time to say goodnight.

How did I know it would be my last time to see Peter. I

didn’t. I have the memories of that night now, his new

shirt I admired, his smile, his good night kiss. I wish to

thank the Senior Center staff for their help and comfort

during those difficult days. To our wonderful community

of Windsor Locks, thank you so much. Peter was truly

loved by so many friends and family and will be sadly

missed by everyone. Have a beautiful and blessed Easter

season. Mary Ann Giannelli
