DG Research Framework Programmes – FP7

FP7 is divided in four sections:• Cooperation: Funding for collaborative research

programmes (10 themes, theme 8 = Social Economic Sciences & Humanities)

• People: Marie Curie programme, Funding for PhD Training and international mobility for established research

• Ideas: European Research Council: Funding for high level individual research (starting grants and advanced grants)

• Capacities: Funding for a.o. Infrastructures, cooperation with industry etc.

FP Cooperation, themes relevant for Humanities

• Theme 8: Social Economic Sciences and Humanities

• Topics for last call (deadline 31 January 2013) are published in

the work programme.

• No topics in the area of religion and gender

FP Marie Curie Programme: fellowship opportunities aimed at research training and knowledge transfer.

Activity 1: Initial Training Networks (ITN)

• Joint research programme

• Early stage researchers

• Public and private organisations

• Innovative Doctoral Programme

• Deadline last call in FP7: November 22, 2012

INITIAL TRAINING NETWORKS (Marie Curie ITN)

• At least 3 participants in 3 different Member States

• Participation of other third countries and associated partners

• No predefined size, recommendation to keep between 6-10

• Duration normally 48 months

• Min. support to researcher of 3 months, max. 3 years

• Approx. 500 researcher months

• Bottom-up approach: topics freely chosen

Activity 2: Life-Long Training and Career

Development

• Intra-european Fellowship for Career Development (IEF): experienced researchers: forthcoming call March 14, 2013

• International Incoming Fellowship (IIF): from other third country forthcoming call March 14, 2013

• International Outgoing Fellowship (IOF): to other third country forthcoming call March 14, 2013

International Research Staff Exchange Scheme: Marie Curie IRSES

• Strengthen research partnerships through staff exchanges and networking activities between European research organisations and research organisations from countries with which the EU has an S&T agreement

• Coordinated joint programme of exchange of researchers for short periods

• At least 2 EU partners and 1 Other third country partner

• Bottom-up approach (no predefined topics)

• Duration 24-48 months. Max. period of exchange is 12 months (can be split up into shorter stays)

• Deadline proposals: January 17, 2012

European Research Council: ERC Grants

European Research Council (ERC) grants: support of individual researchers of any nationality and age who wish to pursue their frontier research. In particularly, the ERC encourages proposals that cross disciplinary boundaries, pioneering ideas that address new and emerging fields and applications that introduce unconventional, innovative approaches:

ERC Advanced Grants: deadline November 22, 2012 ERC Starting Grants: deadline October 17, 2012 ERC Consolidator Grants: deadline January 10, 2013

Will come back (strongly is the expectation) in HORIZON 2020, but no calls in 2013.

COST Actions: European Cooperation in Science and Technology• Coordination of nationally funded research actions, based on an international

framework for cooperation

• Supports coordination costs of research networks (Actions), not the research itself (this is nationally funded)

• Botton-up approach, with “a la carte” participation: only countries who wish to participate in an Action do so

• You can join an Action (if your country agrees), or start your own Action

• Support for meetings, short-term scientific missions, training schools, seminars etc.

• Open calls: two times a year

HERAnet: funding for research in Europe

• Partnership between 18 Humanities Research Councils across Europe and the European Science Foundation.

• One common pot of national budgets of the 18 HRC’s

• Objective: “To firmly establish the Humanities in the European Research Area and in FP6 and FP7”.

• Last call out: February 10, 2012. Theme: Cultural Encounters. Deadline passed.

• Future in HORIZON 2020: not yet clear

HORIZON 2020: the new Framework Programme 2014-2020

• Successor of FP7 cooperations programme, based on so-called ‘’grand’’ or ‘’societal’’ challenges.

Total budget: 80 billion

Three main objectives:

• excellent science• industrial leadership• societal challenges

SOCIETAL CHALLENGES TOPICS HORIZON 2020

• Health, demographic change and wellbeing 8 033 Euro

• Food security, sustainable agriculture, marine and maritime research 4 152 Euro

• Secure, clean and efficient energy 5 782 Euro

• Smart, green and integrated transport 6 802 Euro

• Climate action, resource efficiency and raw materials 3 160

• Inclusive, innovative and secure societies 3 819 Euro

HORIZON 2020 and the HUMANITIES

• Challenge 6 is split into:* inclusive and reflective societies and* security

• Lobby for special topic of SSH, so far not successful, but

• More than 3000 amendments have been proposed and are currently discussed

• Ongoing: Parliament and council negotiations (content and buget)

• Mid 2013: adoption of legislative acts by Parliament and Council

• January 2014: launch of first calls
