Euclid Creek Watershed PIPE Program 2015 Event Series - PIPE Committee Work Plan (Annual Update) 1 Education Theme for 2015 Honey, I Shrunk the Lawn! In urban and suburban areas, lawns can be a significant contributor to nonpoint source pollution. Compacted soils, short-rooted turf grass and excessive use of fertilizers and other lawn care chemicals cause lawns to generate increased amounts of runoff, nutrients, pesticides and herbicides, all of which negatively impact the health of aquatic systems. By replacing portions of turfed, traditionally managed lawn area with native trees, shrubs, wildflowers and/or grasses, the negative impact of lawns on water quality is also reduced. Likewise, simple changes in lawn management practices can reduce the pollution contribution from lawns. A Day in the Life of Euclid Creek Event – July 18, 9:00am-2:30pm – Wildwood

Park, Euclid Creek Reservation - lots of event planning meetings (5/19, 6/25, 7/16) 83 people participated in taking snapshot of the creek’s health with stops at Acacia

Reservation (chemistry monitoring), Highland Picnic Area - Euclid Creek Reservation (ECR) (macroinvertebrate) and Wildwood Park-ECR (chemistry and fish) focusing on different aspects of monitoring at each park.

Event Organizers: led by Cleveland Metroparks in partnership with Euclid Creek Watershed Program partners, NEORSD, Sierra Club Water Sentinels Program, Euclid Creek Volunteer Monitoring Program.

Stream Naming Project – Euclid Creek Watershed resident, Charles Sawyer, to research and propose stream names for unnamed streams in Euclid Creek. Mr. Sawyer and Ms. Posius will coordinate on how to outreach on effort to streamside property owners, Watershed Council communities, etc. Mr. Sawyer doing historical research to date.
