Hoops for Hope is a first-rate, locally organized annual 3 on 3 basketball tournament providing an opportunity for the people of Saskatchewan to support cystic fibrosis (CF) research and care. It was conceptualized and initiated by the parents of Dominic (9 years) and Benjamin (2 years) who were born with the most common, fatal inherited disease in Canada. Out of their passion for physical activity and community, but even more so out of their determination to witness the day when a control or cure is found, Shaun and Katarina Nechvatal took it upon themselves to create a unique, family-friendly event to raise funds. Former Huskies and highly-regarded basketball coaches Shaun and his sister, Sharlene, bring a wealth of experience to ensure longevity for this exceptional event.
Hoops for Hope has formed strong partnerships with POW City Kinsmen and the Saskatoon and District Kinettes. The inclusive event attarcts a broad demographic: players of all ages and abilities and those who enjoy the inspir-ing and festive-like atmosphere.
INTRODUCTION
MISSIONTo raise awareness and fundsin support of cystic fibrosis
research and care while at the same time developing a unique
community-building event in Saskatoon
We seek to ensure that all who participate in any way in Hoops for Hope experience enjoyment and cam-araderie that will keep them coming back year after year. In doing so, we not only provide another amazing event in the city of Saskatoon, but push cystic fibrosis on the forefront of the public’s attention.
We educate the public about cystic fibrosis in order to make known the many struggles for individuals and famlilies affected by the disease and also to highlight the great hope there is for the future of all who live with CF.
Ultimately it is our hope to make substantial monetary contribution to Cystic Fibrosis Canada to fund reserach and care for CF.
This reserach has helped increase the median age of survivial from 5 to over 53, implement newborn screening across the country and increased the amount of life-changing drugs in the pipeline. To date, the annual Hoops for Hope tournament has raised over $260,000.

LOCAL EFFECTSSaskatoon is home to two of Saskatchewan’s three CF clinics funded by Cystic Fibrosis Canada (CFC). This allows our children and adults with CF access to specialized medical care with-out having to leave the province. While Saskatoon and Regina both provide care to babies and children up to the age of 18 through their respective pediatric clinics, Saskatoon is the only location in Saskatchewan to house an adult CF clinic, thereby serving all adults with CF in the province.
Any family affected by CF will testify how essential it is that we have local clinics available for the frequent examinations and testing required to ensure the well being of loved ones. Having local clinics guarantees that dedicated staff who are knowledgeable about the disease are present when recurrent hospital visits and/or stays are required. Due to the financial support of CFC, each clinic has team members who provide expertise and excellence in care as they follow national standards set out by the organization.
CFC provides research grant funds to Dr. Juan Ianowski at the University of Saskatchewan. Dr. Ianowski’s research focuses on alleviating the thick, sticky mucus build-up in the airways which causes repeated lung infections that lead to permanent lung damage.
NATIONAL EFFECTSCFC provides funding for 42 CF clinics in Canada for specialized CF care. As well, the organization advocates for change by working with governments to provide essential programs, including newborn screening, to enhance the quality of life for people with CF. CFC raises funds to achieve the goal of finding a cure or control for the disease. For example, ground-breaking research with the Cystic Fibrosis Individualized Therapy Program is building a database of stem cells to determine the best drug or combination of drugs for an individual with CF.
Not only will your contribution to Hoops for Hope impact people with CF and their families right here in Saskatchewan, your support reaches beyone the province to make a difference nationally and globally.
