TECHNICAL COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRS TECHNICAL COMMITTEE MEMBERS

COMMITTEE CHAIRMAN: Abdulaziz Al Saad, Saudi AramcoAbdulaziz Al-Saad is a geophysicist working in the Geophysical Imaging Department for Saudi Aramco Exploration Admin Area, with a focus on near-surface geophysical modeling. Abdulaziz Al-Saad received his BSc degree in Geophysics from University of New Orleans, Louisiana (USA). His research interests are on near-surface modeling and borehole geophysics.

COMMITTEE CO-CHAIRMAN: Moosa Al-Jahdhami, Petroleum Development OmanMoosa Al-Jahdhami is a seismic processing geophysicist at Petroleum Development Oman since 2009, holding BSc and MSc degrees on Geophysical Sciences from Leeds University (UK). Moosa worked in Shell Netherlands from 2014 to 2017 as part of his international assignment. During his career in Petroleum Development Oman and Shell, he worked on signal processing and depth imaging of land seismic data, and was involved in research and experimental projects. Moosa is experienced in WAZ processing, seismic imaging, multiple attenuation and full waveform inversion.

Abdallah Ibrahim Abouelelam, SchlumbergerAbdallah Ibrahim Abouelelam graduated in 2005 from Cairo university with a BSc in Geophysics. He worked for 1 year at Cairo university as a geophysics instructor and researcher. He then joined Schlumberger in 2006 in the land seismic acquisition, and then joined the seismic data processing in Cairo in 2011, working mainly on land seismic data processing. He then went to Houston in 2012 to study for the 1-year Area Geophysicists university program. He worked in Lagos, Nigeria as an area geophysicist, giving technical support and hands on work on land and marine and 4D seismic imaging. He is currently based in Cairo as the Middle East and North Africa geophysics lead, looking after the challenges in the area and working on the critical projects and opportunities.

Ahmed Nasr, IONAhmed Nasr received a BSc degree in Geophysics from faculty of science Ain Shams University. He then worked in Petroleum Geo-services PGS ME in Egypt for 5 years and was involved with the marine seismic data processing group in Offshore Egypt & North Africa. In 2009-2010, he worked for seismic acquisition/processing companies Fugro FSI & Polarcus/ION as shift leader onboard processing geophysicist in North Sea, Asia & West Africa. Since 2011, he has been working for ION Egypt as Processing Center Manager, overseeing all in-house onshore and offshore projects in different parts of the world.

Ali Shehab, Bahrain Petroleum Company (Bapco)Ali Shehab is an Exploration Geophysics currently working with Tatweer Petroleum’s exploration group, focusing on adding more reserves to the Kingdom of Bahrain. Ali holds a BSc degree in Geological Sciences specializing in Geophysics and Seismology from the University of Texas at Austin (USA). He joined the national oil company in 2014, and worked on various diverse exploration projects ranging from geophysical data acquisition, processing and interpretation. Ali is an active SEG member since 2011.

Bashir Durrani, ARGASBashir Durrani received his MSc in Geology with specialization in Geophysics in 1983 (Pakistan), an MSc in Physics in 1989 (USA) and a PhD in Geophysics in 1993 (USA), concentrating on earthquake seismology and crustal studies using seismic and non-seismic techniques. Bashir has over 27 years of experience in the seismic industry and academia. His areas of interest include seismic data acquisition and processing, reservoir characterization, permanent reservoir monitoring, non-seismic techniques such as Gravity, Magnetic and Electrical Resistivity methods. Bashir is currently based in Saudi Arabia working for Arabian Geophysical and Surveying Company (ARGAS) as VP of Business Development.

David Le Meur, CGGDavid Le Meur is Senior Research Advisor at CGG. He received a PhD in geophysics in 1997 from Paris XI University (France) and has 21 years of experience in Seismic Processing at CGG. Since 2001, as a researcher, he has been posted in various locations such as Paris (France), Calgary (Canada) and Muscat (Oman). Mainly focused on land topics, David worked on surface-consistent algorithms (statics, amplitude, deconvolution, phase), noise attenuation methods for surface waves and random noise, near-surface velocity building as First-Arrival tomography and surface wave inversion.

Khaled Dulaijan, Dhahran Geoscience Society (DGS)Khaled is an experienced geophysicist with a demonstrated history of working in Saudi Aramco for more than 15 years. He has a BSc from the University of Tulsa (USA), MSc and PhD from the University of Calgary (Canada). He is skilled in seismic anisotropy, borehole seismic, seismic imaging, and velocity model building. He currently works in seismic imaging of Red Sea, an area known to be challenging because of structural complexity and subsalt. He is also the technical Vice President of Dhahran Geoscience Society.

Li Zhenyong, BGPLi Zhenyong is currently Chief Geophysicist & Senior Consultant in BGP-GRI (Geophysical Research Institute) overseas. He received a BSc in Wuhan Geology College (China) in 1984, and a MSc in China University of Petroleum (Beijing, China) in 1998. Li has more than 30 years of experience in the seismic industry and has been working at BGP since 1984 in various positions such as a Processing Geophysicist, Chief Geophysicist, Team Leader, Project Supervisor, Processing Manager and Senior Consultant, in China and abroad. Since 2008, Li works in BGP Inc. in the UAE, in charge of seismic data processing and interpretation business in the Middle East.

Mohammad J. Ali, Kuwait Oil CompanyMohammad J. Ali is Senior Geophysicist at Kuwait Oil Company. He holds a BSc in General Physics from Kuwait University. He joined Kuwait Oil Company in 2005 and worked in the Seismic Acquisition Unit for 6 years, and then moved to the Seismic Data Processing Unit.

Sherif M. Hanafy, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM)Sherif M. Hanafy is currently an associate professor at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), he received his PhD in 2002 from Kiel University (Germany) – Cairo University (Egypt) on Seismic and GPR tomography. His main research interests is shallow applications of geophysics using seismic, GPR and resistivity, but he is also interested in tomography, seismic modelling, inversion, migration, data interpolation/extrapolation, and machine learning especially in processing and interpretation of seismic and GPR data.

Wael El Sherbeny, Baker HughesWael El Sherbeny is currently Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) Manager – Geoscience & Petroleum Engineering, KSA Geo-Market, leading a group of subject matter experts SME’s covering geology, geomechanics, Petrophysics, reservoir, production and unconventional. Wael holds a BSc In Special Geology, a MSc in pore pressure and clay mineralogy and the relation to wellbore instability – Gulf of Suez, Cairo University, accredited from Texas Tech. University, Department of Petroleum Engineering, Houston (USA). Wael has over 25 years of experience in oil industry in technical, sales and managerial positions. Wael is an SPE member and a technical steering committee member for major events. Wael is an author and co-author for almost 57 published papers.

Yingcai Zheng, University of HoustonYingcai Zheng is an Assistant Professor in seismic imaging and reservoir characterization, in the Department of Earth and Atmospheric Sciences, at University of Houston (USA). Prior to his joining University of Houston in 2014, he was a Postdoctoral Fellow and Research Scientist at Earth Resources Laboratory at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (USA). He got his PhD in Geophysics from University of California Santa Cruz in 2007 and BSc degree (2001) also in Geophysics from Peking University, Beijing (China). He is a recipient of the SEG’s 2015 Karcher Award for his contribution in exploration geophysics.

OPENING SPEAKER KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Mohammed Al Otaibi, Saudi AramcoMohammed Al-Otaibi has been with Saudi Aramco for more than 25 years and is currently the Chief Geophysicist for the Geophysical Data Processing Division. His job is to assure delivering timely quality processed volumes to support exploration and development programs within the company. He has a PhD in Geophysics from the University of Houston (USA) in 2002 and his technical interests are AVO and seismic imaging.

Abdullatif Al Shuhail, King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM)Abdullatif Al-Shuhail is an Associate Professor of Geophysics at King Fahd University of Petroleum & Minerals (KFUPM). He got his BSc from KFUPM in Geophysics in 1988, his MSc and PhD in Geophysics from Texas A&M University at College Station in 1993 and 1998 respectively. Since then, he has been teaching and advising at KFUPM. He founded and directed the Near Surface Seismic Investigation Consortium at KFUPM in 2006-2008. He authored and co-authored several papers in the field of petroleum seismic exploration. He is a co-author of the book Processing of Seismic Reflection Data Using MATLAB published by Morgan & Claypool Publishers in 2011. He is an active member of the SEG, the EAGE, and the Dhahran Geoscience Society. His interests include near-surface effects on petroleum seismic data, seismic investigation of fractured reservoirs, and ground penetrating radar.

Gang Yu, BGPGang Yu is Senior Technical Advisor to the President of BGP. He holds a BSc (Exploration Geophysics) and a MSc (Geophysical Instrumentation) from Chengdu University of Technology (China), and a PhD (Applied Geophysics) from Macquarie University (Australia). His research interests include marine MT and CSEM, land MT and TFEM, borehole-to-surface TFEM, integrated shale gas reservoir characterization, microseismic monitoring of hydraulic fracturing operation, distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) VSP survey and 3D VSP imaging. He is an active member of the SEG, the EAGE and the Society of Petrophysicists and Well Log Analysts (SPWLA).

John Brittan, IONJohn Brittan received a BSc in Physics from the University of Birmingham (UK) in 1992 and a PhD in Geophysics from Imperial College, London (UK) in 1995. He worked for PGS from 1997 until 2012, undertaking a number of management roles including Head of Processing Technology and Chief Geophysicist for Data Processing and Technology. In 2013, he joined ION where he is currently Vice President, Strategic Technology Development for the E&P Technology and Services Division. He is an active member of the EAGE and SEG and is an Associate Editor of Geophysical Prospecting.

Raffaela Sebatien, CGGRaffaela Sebatien’s current position is Geophysical Manager for CGG Geoscience – Multi-Physics Imaging, based in Dubai. She studied geophysics in Hamburg (Germany), and has been working in the Middle East since 2003. Her scientific interest is the integration of multi-physics data with seismic data.

Tariq Al Khalifah, King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST)Tariq A. Alkhalifah is a professor in the Physical Sciences and Engineering Division. Before he joined KAUST in June 2009, he was research professor and director of the Oil and Gas Research Institute at King Abdulaziz City for Science & Technology (KACST). From 1996 to 1998, he served as a postdoctoral researcher for the Stanford Exploration Project at Stanford University (USA). Member of SEG and EAGE, he received the J. Clarence Karcher Award from SEG and the Conrad Schlumberger Award from EAGE in 2003, and honorary lecturer for the SEG in 2011. He received his PhD in geophysics and his MSc in geophysics, both from the Colorado School of Mines (USA). He holds a BSc in geophysics from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Saudi Arabia.

Thomas Bardainne, CGGAfter a PhD in seismology dedicated to the study of induced seismicity of gas fields, Thomas Bardainne started work for the Magnitude Company in 2006 as a seismologist researcher. He joint CGG in 2013 as a senior researcher. After few years working on passive seismic, he is now focusing on near-surface geophysical characterization, and more particularly on MWI (multi wave inversion) and interferometry. His recent works are linked to the use of machine learning technologies for near-surface characterization.
