SRI SUKTHAM

MANTRA AND ITS MEANING

Sri Suktam is the addendum part of Rigveda in 10th Mandala. There are fifteen Hymns in this Suktam. One, who is aspiring abundant wealth, has to worship the Goddess

Mahalakshmi with intensity of devotion and sincerity. The meditator has to aim at the holy feet of the Goddess, and repeat the fifteen Hymns continuously and offer the oblations in the Sacred fire, to gain the grace of Sri Devi. This Sukta is composed in

different meters (Chandas). The first three Mantras are in Anushtup meter. The fourth one is in Bruhat. The fifth and sixth are composed in Trishtup. From seventh to fourteenth, they are again in Anushtup. The last one, fifteenth is in Pankti Prastara

meter. In one of the benefit accrued Slokas, It is explained that a Meditator can achieve plentiful wealth by chanting along with proper offerings in the sacred fire.

The Meditator offers prayers to Goddess Maha Lakshmi to fulfill his desires in Poundarika Agni, a special fire altar, shaped in the form of a sixteen-petal Lotus flower.

Page 4: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

The 1st Mantra in the Sukta is as follows.

The Meaning: O! My beloved Agni Deva! I offer my sincere prayers to you. Please invoke the Goddess of wealth Sri Maha Lakshmi on my behalf, who is in golden color,

who can wash off the entire bad luck of her devotees, who is also decorated in gold and silver jewelry, who is adorned in colorful garlands and who is blooming like full moon with excellence of pleasure.

The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary.

Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed a great sacrifice. In that, Maha Lakshmi for some reason, took the form of a little deer and roaming around the forest.

It is explained that it was happened due to the dreadful fear of Veerabhadra, who was

in the form of Lord Rudra. In that sense, Harini means a deer. So it is justifiable that Sri Devi is addressed as Harini. This Hymn also explains the beauty of the Goddess Lakshmi which touches the heart and soul of the devotees.

The second Mantra is revealing the desires of Meditator, (Sadhaka) to get them fulfilled

through his invocation. Here the communicator is again, Agni. The Devotee is requesting the following:

O! Agni Deva! I pray to your spiritual excellence. Please invoke the Goddess Lakshmi on behalf of me for my spiritual and materialistic benefits; those will never be disconnected

by her at any moment. With your Supreme Invocation and by the grace of Devi, I can acquire plenty of cattle wealth, horses, noble relatives along with several humble

servants. In other words, the Sadhaka is earnestly requesting the Supreme Fire, to invoke his

spiritual flame in his inner conscious, so as to reach the final Destiny, Sahasrara, (final Supreme bliss) by crossing all the respective spiritual energetic junctions, so as to enjoy the ultimate.

Page 5: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

In this mantra, the Sadhaka who is also the meditator invokes the Goddess by himself.

He says as follows. “I am invoking the Mother Goddess, who is sitting in the center of beautiful chariot, with the riding horses in front and is alerted by elephants’ hissing sounds from both sides. It is believed that any one, with depth of devotion, can join

with Her Supreme Radiance. I pray to her greatness, to stay with me all the time with Her Supreme Majesty. The Goddess will grace me with full of love and affection”. This

Mantra explained the way of strenuous practice to reach the ultimate bliss Sahasrara.

This is the fourth Mantra in this Sukta. This is in Bruhati meter, a different one from the above three. This Mantra also speaks of the eagerness of the Sadhaka to have her immediate sakshatkara, her presence. The Goddess is invoked as follows.

He says that, he is extending his invocation to Devi, who is beyond of anybody’s

imagination, who is encircled with enriched golden towers and encompass with Her pleasant looks on devotees.

The commentator here speaks of the gracious looks of Sri Devi are possible because of her birth took place in the milky ocean. He continues to describe that she is shining as the Sun and blessing the devotees for their maximum spiritual and materialistic

pleasure. The Sadhaka is invoking the deity, who is seated on blooming lotus flower with the blooming aura around.

The fifth Hymn in this Sukta is in Trishtup meter. The meditator is still continuing his

prayers for attaining the grace of the goddess of wealth in the following way. The sadhaka says in his own words:

‘I pray to the Goddess of wealth! Who is shining like blooming Moon and makes the Universe enjoy, who is enriched with wisdom by rewarding spiritual as well as

Page 6: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

materialistic benefits to her devotees, and whose generosity is lauded even by the divine beings including Indra, the Lord of Heavens, whose charities are being praised at the highest spiritual level, whose hands are beautified by holding the golden lotus flowers,

who is meditated on the seed letter “EEM” (ईं) to win the grace, and who can wash off

my entire bad luck once for all. Here the word “Padmineem” (पद्मद्मन म)् specifically

signifies eight Lotus Energetic Centers or the Chakras, where the Sadhaka can find the way to Sahasrara, the ultimate bliss that can be enjoyed by surrendering to her feet.

The Sixth Mantra is also in Trishtup Meter. This is also addressed by the Sadhaka himself. The fifth mantra is explained in relation to the Moon. Now the relation is with

the Sun. The meaning is as follows.

O! Maha Lakshmi! Goddess of Wealth, You are shining like the radiance of the Sun.

With your strenuous penance, the sacred Bilva plant is sprouted on Earth. In the Vamana Purana it is hinted that the penance of katyayani has resulted the Mimosa

(Sami) plant. The word “kara” means inheritance.

A very surprising fact is that this tree gives fruits without flowers. It is also named as

SRI VRUKSHA (ि वकृ्षः)

The Bilva fruits are considered as so sacred, because they came out of your inheritance, can root out our ignorance and wash off the bad luck caused because of the internal and external vicious influences encircled. It is the scriptural injunction that the

Sadhaka has to undergo intensive practice for the grace of the Goddess, by sitting under the Bilva tree and eat its fruit during the days of practice. Skanda Purana along

with Vamana Purana emphasized the oblations in the sacred fire and worshipping Maha Lakshmi with Bilva leaves and fruits which will yield best spiritual results. This Hymn is highly valued by Sadhakas to practice for captivating the grace of Maha

Lakshmi.

Page 7: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

The Sadhaka urges the grace of the Goddess of wealth in this Mantra as follows:

Oh! Maha Lakshmi! You, as the Goddess of wisdom, along with Kubera, who is the presiding deity of the Northern direction, and also the beloved companion of Lord Siva, to grace me with precious diamond Chintamani Mantra. Due to positive karmas in my

previous lives, I am blessed to take birth here in this world and achieved the opportunity of practicing the meditation on your holy feet. The Deity of wealth, Kubera

also has to grace me with plentiful wealth along with highest wisdom under your direction.

Chintamani mantra has fifteen seed letters. Sri Sukta has Fifteen Mantras. It is a legend from one of the Puranas, that Kubera is graced by Maha Lakshmi and the Chintamani Stone, (It is a precious stone also) which conferred on him all the Divine

benefits. This is happened to him because of the Pancha Dasakshari So it is sure that this Mantra is very precious and spiritual in acquiring

both worlds’ desires.

In Bhargava Samhita, it is mentioned, that wisdom, intelligence, firmness, prosperity, plentiful, contentment, Veda, Sastra, spiritual strength, mental vigor, health and victory are considered as divine forces under the control of the Presiding Deities. Those who

worship Maha Lakshmi, all these energies become slaves and service the Upasaka under Her direction. The reference is given below for understanding.

The Sadhaka is saying with confidence, by the grace of Goddess Maha Lakshmi, he can

wash off the influence of Jyeshta Devi, who is elder than Her, who is starved forever, Inactive, and who represents the bad luck since beginning. Her influence is harming him even before the Goddess of Wealth influenced him.

Page 8: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

He further prays to Her Majesty, that the Devi has to bless him with prosperity and wisdom by expelling the ignorance and bad luck from his home. This hymn is emphasizing to establish spiritual sense in Sadhaka, and the positive

vibrations to keep alert as the meditation is active and in progress. Then a gate way is prepared by the Divine powers to expel the negative influences. Uttara Narayana Upanishat says that Lord Sri Maha Vishnu is always goes in front of Devas to help

them to come out of dangers. He starts planning ahead to curb the cruelties of demons even before the Devas experiencing.

When the Sadhaka starts his Sahdana with confidence, the Gods’ Divine powers come

forward to help him in sending the positive vibrations in order to continue his meditation in the right way. These are the extreme spiritual energies what Sadhaka is asking for his peaceful progress in meditation. The Amara Kosa scripture says about

these powers.

These eight qualities are considered as Super Human powers. One can attain these by

strenuous penance. Anima (The power of becoming like an atom, minute) Mahima (Majestic power) Garima (Growing in to unusual size) Laghima (Extreme lightness)

Prapti (Reaching as per desire, even to the moon within seconds) Prakamya (irresistible will power) Isitwa (controlling power) Vasitwa (subjugating by magic).

The commentary of Madhava states that, the holy earth is glorified with nine kinds of

fragrances. They are इष्ट (Desired), अद्मनष्ट (Unwanted), मिुर (Sweetened) कटु (Pungent), द्मनिणरर् (Excretory), सींित (Multiple flavors), स्स्नग्िण (oily), रूक्ष (Unplesant),

Page 9: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

The Sadhaka in his own words prays as follows. ‘I am very much pleased to invoke the

Goddess of wealth, who is in the form of holy Earth, धियीं भू रूपेर् धचन्दतयेत ् can be

pleased by strenuous penance. She can never be degraded at any moment by any one. She shines in colors with plentiful production of food crops and abundant cattle wealth. She establishes her supremacy everywhere in the entire Universe.”

By the cleansed perceptions of the past, the soul can travel towards the light of knowledge. The expulsion of ignorance is expressed with the word GANDHA. Those who do not have these impressions of the past, they may not find out the Divine light

easily. The Goddess is in the form of abundant (Pushti) as is explained in the mantra. In the Sapta Sati scripture, it is said that the Devi resides in the form of PUSHTI in all

beings.

O! Maha Lakshmi! The presiding deity of wealth, please bless me to enjoy all the positive desires of acquiring the reality in my word, enjoying the delicious and palatable dishes and cattle wealth at my home. Grace me to establish the name and fame

throughout my life.

Those who meditate on the Deity, by reciting this Hymn intensively with depth of devotion and sincerity, they can achieve the qualities of truth speaking, honest living, and understanding the supreme Brahman.

Page 10: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

The Sadhaka is continuing his prayers by invoking Kardama, who is one of the nine Creators of this Universe, in this Hymn.

O! Kardama! Please make me eligible to enjoy your grace all the time. Kardama has three preferences. (1) He is a sage. (2) He is one of the nine creators of the Universe (3) he is one of the visionary of the Hymns of Rigveda.

Maha Lakshmi, the Goddess of wealth, at one time, pleased with the penance of this

sage, graced him with an auspicious boon of becoming a child to her. This is the reason why the meditator is addressing him as the son of the Goddess, to reside at his home along with Divine Mother. The below sloka reveals us, that the Goddess has blessed

three spiritual souls to become her divine children. They are Ananda, Kardama and Chiklita.

The Sadhaka further prays, that Kardama, along with his beloved Mother Sri Devi, decorated in lotus floral garland may arrive his residence and stay with him.

The Goddess of Waters and Chiklita, the Divine child of Wealth Goddess, are invoked simultaneously by the Sadhaka in this Hymn. He is addressing them in the following

way. O! Presiding Deity of Waters! Please grace me with colorful flowers and fruits in my back yard. The fragrance of flowers may immerse us in pleasant breeze. The fruits and flowers from those plants will be used for worshipping the Mother Goddess at my home.

Hay! Chiklita! The son of Maha Lakshmi Devi! Please grace me by residing at my home along with Mother.

The Meditators it is believed, that those who seek the main three materialistic desires, other than Salvation, (Dharma, Artha, Kama) will accept Chiklita as their Rushi (Sage).

Those who seek the fourth desire of Salvation, (Moksha) will accept Ananda as their sage. It is evident by this sloka, that the Goddess Maha Lakshmi is powerful in providing both kinds of benefits as per the choice of meditator.

The Sadhaka is invoking the Goddess of Wealth through Sacred Fire.

Hay Jataveda! I pray to your highness to invoke Goddess of wealth on my behalf for my welfare. (Jata Veda by name itself reveals that the sacred fire is the marking light of Knowledge.) The Goddess is submissively anointed with the sacred water vessels held

by the trunks of the two elephants on either side.

The nature of coolness is expressed with the word Ardraam (आ्णां). The energetic

centers in the body at different places are explained by the word Pushkarini

The Sun’s radiance in the Goddess is explained with the word Padma

Malinim (पद्म मणमलन म)्. The word Hirnmayeem has two specific meanings. One

meaning is the radiance of Lord Siva. The second meaning is the color of gold

This indicates that Goddess is more gracious when she is worshipped

intensively. The Lalitha Sahasra Nama says that she ought to be worshipped intensively

for quick results.

This Mantra also indicates the invocation of the Goddess through the Sacred Jataveda, the sacred fire. The Sadhaka is saying in the following way. The Goddess who is in

serenity and pleasant towards her devotees, who is anointed with sacred waters, who is decorated in golden jewelry and who is holding the Dharma Danda, to establish the

spiritual justice ordained in Scriptures. The Yasti is essentially required (यस्ष्ट) to keep

the dharma in balance. Her radiance always resembles the Sun’s brightness.

This is fifteenth Hymn in this Sukta. With this Mantra the Sukta ends.

Page 12: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

The Sadhaka is directly addressing the Goddess in the following manner. I invoke the Goddess of Wealth, who never takes the reverse turn at any time from my

vision. I pray to Her Majesty, that I may be blessed with enormous wealth, which contains valuable jewelry, house hold animals and many more servicing assistants.

One who is desirous of worshipping the Goddess of wealth, he has to undergo all the

daily rituals after the completion of sacred shower and get purify himself from the beginning, and start chanting these fifteen Hymns with intensity of Devotion.

Then he has to worship the Sacred Fire and ablate the prescribed offerings with the chanting of these Hymns 16000 times in Poundarik Agni which will yield excellent

spiritual and materialistic benefits. Madhavacharya Bhashya:

The below sloka is recited at the end of Sri Sukta. The meaning of the sloka is this. I bow to the Goddess Padma, Maha Lakshmi, who is fond of lotus flowers, who is seated

on the lotus, lives in lotus mansion, gazes through lotus petal eyes, and follows the ideals of the Lord Vishnu, sends her gracious sparks on me by keeping her lotus feet on

my head.

The below Hymn is also recited at the end of the sukta which is in Rik Samhita in 7th

mandala (7-4-4)

Page 13: Event Schedule - livermoretemple.org · The word ‘Harini’ in this mantra has one more beautiful meaning in the commentary. Daksha Prajapati, one of the nine Creators, once performed

The word Sriya (धिय) has two meanings. (1) The Soma juice used in the oblations and

the other (2) the Sadhaka himself who conducts the Sacrifice. Soma is considered as no

other than Lord Vishnu. Now the meaning:

This Soma is originated to produce wealth. It graces the Sadhakar. The house holders, who laud the radiance of Soma, are blessed with prosperity, wealth and wisdom. They

are plentiful in their life. Their longevity is preserved. Their spirituality is enhanced. Their victory is guaranteed against enmity by the Soma.

The same meaning can be interpreted on behalf of the Sadhaka also. Then the meaning is:

The yajamana is the creator of wealth. He tries to generate plentiful wealth through sacrifices. Those who assist him are also the beneficiaries of this wealth. The Sadhaka’s

blessings bestow long life and prosperity and spirituality. The sacrifice will be victorious in all aspects.

With this mantra the Sri Sukta is completed. This emphasizes that, those who worships

the Goddess of wealth with faith and sincerity will reap the superficial benefits beyond doubt.

One who can concentrate on Sri Devi’s Lotus feet, reach Her Celestial Mansion beyond doubt. One who does the Recitation, conduct sacrifice and observe deep meditation on

Devi with sincere effort, will be blessed by the Goddess with various types of wealth including health and wisdom.

Now Lakshmi Gayatri mantra—

We will try to learn about the Divinity of Maha Lakshmi. Let us know Her Supremacy

by meditating on Her Lotus feet, who is also the Divine Consort of Lord Vishnu. May be we all motivated towards Her Supremacy.
