Imagining his doghouse to be a British bi-plane, Snoopy soared through the clouds in pursuit of the Red Baron. Schulz modeled this nemesis on World War I fighter pilot, Manfred von Richthofen, whose infamy lived on long after his last dogfight. Learn more about the real Red Baron, and

Taking inspiration from his childhood, Schulz remembered, “It was impossible for one boy holding a football for another to let him kick it without pulling it away. It would happen every time you went out to play football.” Schulz created many other storylines centered on the Gang’s gridiron efforts, including Snoopy’s “Mad Punter” series of the 1960s, and Peppermint Patty’s love of the game in later years.
