Don’t Try is at Home is the Fleet’s series of live shows that explore science that’s too messy, too noisy and too hair-raising to do at home! You can experience up to five different shows throughout the day, one show performed each hour, live, on stage. Ever wonder what would happen if you combined a leaf blower and a roll of toilet paper? How high have you seen ping pong balls fly? Grab your frenemy and volunteer, if you dare, for the Chain of Pain! See how shocking science can be. Also be sure to check out the new Science Sideshow act on the Don't Try is at Home stage. You'll witness such feats of bravery (and physics!) as the Bowling Ball of Doom, the Not-So-Human Cannonball and the infamous Bed of Nails. Shows last approximately 20 thrilling minutes and accommodate about 100 brave visitors. Whatever you do ... Don’t Try is at Home! BLOCK BUSTERS! Build free-form structures—from skyscrapers to bridges—with thousands of wooden KEVA (Knowledge-Exploration-Visual Arts) planks. Make origami and Spirograph artwork, design and construct simple mechanical toys from recycled materials, build marble “roller coasters” using tubes and ramps or create “digital bling” using colorful LED lights, baeries and accessories. AUGUST—Tinkerers’ Club. Join us on Saturday mornings to learn new skills and work on fun projects that you get to take home with you. Supplies are limited. Advance registration is recommended. $12 members; $15 nonmembers (per project). 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Tinkering Studio. Aug. 1, 15 & 29.

Aug. 1: Basic Ballistics: Marshmallow Shooters. Explore power tools and design as you construct your very own marshmallow-launching device.Aug. 15: Soldering Skills Lab and Wind Energy. Learn to solder and power a motor to create a real working turbine that you get to take home!Aug. 29: Electrical Engineering: Lamp Building Workshop. Have you ever fancied yourself an electrician? We’ve got the electrical wiring supplies to teach you! You bring the bright ideas to design your very own lamp!

AUGUST 2—3D Printing Workshop. Explore new frontiers in technology through 3D printing in the Tinkering Studio. Join us on the a�ernoons of August 2, 9 and 16, for a special workshop on computer-aided design (CAD) and 3D printing. Design and execute the printing of your very own three-dimensional object. �e workshop is available for ages 13+. Pricing for the three-session workshop is $80 for Fleet members and $90 for nonmembers. Sundays, August 2, 9 and 16, noon to 2 p.m.

AUGUST 3—Senior Monday Lecture: R. H. Gutierrez, MD on �e Science of Aging. �roughout human history, man has searched for the fountain of youth, but what really makes us age? We will explore these questions during our lecture on �e Science of Aging. Following the lecture, catch a special screening of the IMAX film Flight of the Bu�erflies. �e first Monday of the month, seniors 65+ enjoy the Science Center exhibits, a lecture and a Giant Dome �eater show at a discount! 10:30 AM lecture; noon theater show; seniors $8, adults $19.95.

AUGUST 8—Saturday Science Club for Girls: T-Shirt Chromatography. Create your own colorful T-shirt design while learning about chemistry and chromatography. Please bring your own white shirt to decorate. Girls in grades 5–8 can join the Fleet on the

AUGUST 14—Suds & Science: �is Stings! �e Life and Death of Bees. Join bee keeper Mari Jarvis and Dr. Heather Bell from UCSD as they discuss the life and death of bees and what we can do to support a healthy bee population. Tickets are $10 and include 2 beers from Mother Earth Brewing Company. Tickets are required for this event. Japanese Friendship Garden, 2215 Pan American Road East, Balboa Park, San Diego, CA 92101, 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

AUGUST 20—Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar. What sounds like the beginning of a bad joke is a fun community program by the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. During Two Scientists Walk Into a Bar, 50 scientists fan out to 25 bars all over San Diego County to enjoy something we all do: a beer and good conversation. Join them, and ask them anything you want! Just look for the sign that reads: “We are scientists. AUGUST 22 & 23—Impossible Science Festival. Join the Fleet’s Curator of Impossible Science, Jason Latimer, as he hosts the first ever Impossible Science Festival, at the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center. �e Impossible Science Festival will be a hands-on, interactive event that explores the science behind the seemingly impossible. Visitors will have the opportunity to learn how to turn objects invisible, explore levitation, play with the science of mind control, discover impossible figures and even learn how to walk on water. Admission on Saturday and Sunday, August 22 and 23, includes access to all of the Impossible Science Festival activities from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., as well as the Fleet’s interactive exhibits, including CIRCUS: Science Under the Big Top, and one IMAX® film. $21.95 adults, $19.95 seniors and $18.95 children 3–12. Children ages 2 and younger receive free admission.
