sensational salt firingInstructor: Susan BeecherIn this three-day workshop partici-pants will bring 15 pieces of Cone 10 bisqueware, which we will decorate and glaze on the first day, then load the salt kiln together. Participants should bring bisqueware of different sizes—more vertical pieces (vases, pitchers, jars) than horizontal pieces (bowls). In addition students may also bring 5 to 10 very small pieces that will help to fill the kiln. We will fire the kiln together on Saturday while having good conversations. We will unload and discuss the pots and the beauty of salt firing on Sunday after-noon. Come and enjoy this beautiful process. All levels welcome – ages 15+See Susan Beecher’s biography under Basics & Beyond.July 1 to July 3, 2016 Friday to Sunday (3 days)9:00 am - 5:00 pmCER-04 • Course Fee: $335 + $35 Materials Fee

salt of the earthInstructor: Jack TroyWe will make the most of our short time together by having two firings of the kiln I think of as “Old Venerable.” Located on a pad a short distance from the bright, cheerful studio, this well seasoned salt kiln, approximately 3 x 3 x 4’ inside, has produced some truly beautiful pots and small scale sculpture. We will be using proven slips and glazes as well as new tests we’ll be free to try.Participants should arrive with approximately 12 bisque-firedpots, modest in scale, made from porcelain or light burning, low-iron stoneware clays rated for cone 8 to 10. Please, no plates or wide bowls. We will glaze and wad our work the first day and load the kiln, candling it over night and firing it off the following day, while we are busy in the studio making work for the second firing, which will be unloaded on the last class day. Bring your favorite tools.Powerpoint talks will cover the historical background of salt-glazing in Europe and the US. This lively workshop can be a good opportunity to concentrate on making multiples or working on a series as well as experiencing atmospheric firing at its best. Discussions will cover form/surface relationships, issues of scale and values, such as what we discover immedi-ately and then over time, when we encounter unfamiliar work. Please bring a personal story about a particular clay object to share with class.Jack Troy is a potter, teacher and writer. He has taught 225 workshops, including several most recently in Australia. And has published nearly 80 articles and book reviews in major ce-ramic periodicals. His book, Salt Glazed Ceramics, is a standard text. He lives and works in Huntingdon, PA. This is his 53rd year of making pots.See more at www.jacktroy.netJuly 7 to July 12, 2016 Thursday to Tuesday (6 days)9:30 am - 5:00 pmCER-05 • Course Fee: $485 + $48 Materials Fee

exciting and formidaBle soda firing! making lively Pots & Working soft on the WheelInstructor: Gay SmithDramatic and brilliant can be the effects of soda firing on clay and glazes. We’ll bring 12 pieces of high fire bisque-ware to Sugar Maples (no wide bowls or plates please!) to glaze and fire in the soda kiln. And we’ll get our hands into freshly

thrown clay to explore many possibilities to alter the form and surface of freshly thrown pots. We’ll emphasize how to make the work more dynamic and lively, and improving practi-cal skills. We’ll discuss and share forms, surface treatments, slips, and glazes that are particularly responsive to the flames of a soda firing. We’ll cover much territory from basic throw-ing techniques to squaring, ovaling, fluting, faceting, altering lidded forms, feet and handles. Our lively conversations will range over our interests, technical questions, developing a personal aesthetic, passions, raw glazing, single firing, and firing a soda kiln. The interests and work of each individual will be given attention, with support and feedback to take the next creative or technical leap on offer. Gay Smith, aka Gertrude Graham Smith, is a studio pot-ter and teaching artist single firing porcelain ware in a soda kiln near Penland, NC. She held artist-in-residencies at the Archie Bray Foundation in Helena, MT and Penland School in Penland, NC. Pots for the taBleInstructor:Caroline CerconeNext time you sit down for a meal at home or at a restau-rant consider not only the food but also the vessel on or in which it is presented. In what ways do the shape, texture, color and material of the plate ware, bowl or cup enhance and complement what you are about to dine or sip on? This workshop is inviting you to explore functional potteryboth wheel thrown and hand built. We will focus on simple shapes and surfaces with reference to cone 6 &10 firing. Through daily demonstrations, discussions and hands on practice we will create well crafted and thoughtful tableware forms that will not only elevate your food and drink but ignite your appetite as well. Caroline Cercone was born in Germany where she com-pleted university with an MA in Japanese studies. Her thesis concerning the Japanese folk craft movement prompted her interest in ceramics and a change of profession. She studied ceramics at the Penland School of Crafts and has assisted her mentors McKenzie Smith, Will Ruggles and Douglass Rankin in several workshops. Caroline has been an independent studio potter for the last 12 years. She presently resides with her wonderful family in Nashville. When her husband opened one of Nashville’s finest restaurants she became interested in cre-ating functional restaurant tableware. In the last three years she has worked with nationally acclaimed chefs to create tableware for their restaurants, including Silo, Husk Nashville, The Cat Bird Seat, and The Butcher and Bee. Working to the edgeInstructor: Kevin CroweIn this workshop we’ll throw a wide range of forms in a wide range of scale, to explore the point at which a fine pot ends and a great pot begins. I’ll focus on forms that exploit the flame in wood firings. While we’re at it we’ll discuss the

challenges and responsibilities of making work in the digital age in a world (ours) of too much ‘stuff.’ Sense of humor required. Work will be bisqued as possible.Kevin Crowe lives and works in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains in central Virginia where he produces wood fired
