Two Art Galleries open downtown

Dorothy Bliskey | Special to The Reporter

Dorothy Bliskey | Special to The Reporter

With the new art walk event coming to the downtown monthly, it is only fitting that two art galleries have opened their doors.

Two artists who coincidentally have both taught art in the Ripon School District invite shoppers and art enthusiasts to visit their galleries.

Jennifer Newhouse opened Jennabee Art Gallery at 87 S. Main St. last spring. Kathryn Dreifuerst, who teaches art in the Ripon School District on a part-time basis, opened Riverwalk Art Center in August at 33 W. Second St.

Jennabee Art Gallery — A must-see on the art walk

Green art is prevalent at Jennebee Art Gallery & Studio, where classes and events keep the place hopping.

“I love to teach art,” said owner Jennifer Newhouse. She offers children and adult classes as well as Family Art Night.

As the mother of five children who all occasionally help out at the gallery, Newhouse is a creative artist with a bachelor’s degree in art education and minors in art history and studio art.

Adults in the Guided Painting class get individual guidance from Newhouse as they tackle their own creative ideas in class. Classes for youth involve topics like Monochromatic Painting or Marker Madness in which students are taught how to create shadows and contrast by manipulating markers.

“It has been my lifelong dream to have an art gallery and studio where I can teach art to people of all ages in my community,” said Newhouse, a Fond du Lac native.

local artistsJennabee Art Gallery showcases and sells the art of other local artists. There is even a youth art wall devoted to artists who are teens or younger.

On display are artists with a variety of styles and mediums — Roberta Krueger, George Kaprelian, Chris Burns, Del Thill, Kirk Dille and Shannon Ashkoft to name a few.

Thill creates custom wood canes with unusual hand grips that might resemble the handle of a saw or a misplaced golf ball. Ashkroft creates gourd art. Shoppers can purchase a

Halloween necklace made of gourds, a gourd purse or an unusual gourd drum.

Most of Newhouse’s green art stems from her own creativity. Her artistic talent is evident in her darkroom photography, oil paintings and passion for paper making.

On the first Saturday of each month, Jennabee Art Gallery offers Open Mic Night at which artists in the form of musicians, poets, actors or comedians can gather and perform.

When the monthly downtown Tour of the Town Art Walk takes place on Friday night, Oct. 21, Jennabee’s will again participate.

“Our gourd artist, Shannon Ashkroft, will be demonstrating how she masterfully creates her gourd art,” Newhouse said.

From 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 23, Jennabee Art Gallery will be one of the stops on the Art Drive — a driving tour of art galleries in various Wisconsin counties. During the Art Drive’s stop at Jennabee Art Gallery, Newhouse will demonstrate the art of making paper.

“I enjoy educating others about art,” Newhouse said. “My gallery is a place where local artists can hang their artwork and people of all ages can learn more about art.”

Jennifer Newhouse, owner of Jennabee’s Art Gallery at 87 S. Main St., offers art classes to children and adults and also hosts Family Art Night. Her art gallery showcases the works of other local artists. Some of the art and craft items on display in her store are shown in adjoining photos. (AiLeen AndRews/the RePoRteR)

Riverwalk Art Center is in former Reporter building

More informationHours are 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to noon

Saturday. For more information, call Riverwalk Art Center at (920) 322-6580 or (920) 979-6208. Although the gallery doesn’t have a website yet, readers can visit the Riverwalk Art Center Facebook site. The moving part of the family business can be found at www.dreifuerstandsons.com. A free parking lot on Second Street is available for those visiting the Dreifuersts’ businesses.

Kathryn Dreifuerst of Riverwalk Art Center-Gallery and Studio, 33 W. Second St., is shown with one of several paintings on display at her gallery, located in the former Reporter building. She unveiled the gallery and studio in August. Artwork is displayed on walls and furniture around the perimeter of the gallery, which also houses Dreifuerst & Sons Moving and Storage. (PAtRiCk FLood/the RePoRteR)

When Kathryn Dreifuerst’s teaching job was reduced to part-time, the Ripon art teacher decided it was time to open her own art gallery.

In August, she unveiled Riverwalk Art Center - Gallery & Studio at 33 W. Second St. in a building formerly occupied by The Reporter.

Her husband, Tom Dreifuerst, purchased the building for his moving company, but there was plenty of space for Kathryn’s art gallery as well.

Imagine a moving company surrounded by art. Or art surrounded by movers.

While it isn’t a typical business combination, it works for the Dreifuersts, married for 27 years and parents to three adult sons — all of whom are involved in their father’s moving companies, Dreifuerst & Sons Moving and Storage (for high-end, local or long distance moves) and The Movers Inc. (for smaller, more economical moves).

While the art gallery is obvious when you step through the doors, the moving company is not. Tom and his sons’ office desks blend in and appear to be part of the gallery setting.

art on displayArt is displayed using pieces of furniture the couple has collected in their travels. The combination of a large expanse of windows, stone walls and ceramic floors emits a warm, contemporary look and feel.

Tom and his sons have worked to transform the office and gallery space themselves during the past year and a half, says Kathryn, adding that the space offers plenty of art display possibilities.

The gallery is in an area that formerly housed The Reporter’s main offices.

“Tom removed the low ceilings to create a big, open space with high, exposed ceilings, decorative stained glass lighting, arts and crafts-style woodwork, decorative tile flooring, and natural light from large windows on Macy Street,” Kathryn said.

Desks for Dreifuerst & Sons are in the middle, with the artwork displayed on the walls and furniture around the perimeter of the gallery. Furniture used to showcase the art is also artistic. Collected by the Dreifuersts over the years, it consists of Stickley arts and crafts, mission style and some antique American folk art pieces.

color and energy“When I started setting pottery, jewelry and metal sculptures on the furniture, the space really came to life,” Kathryn said. “The paintings, when hung between the oak wall partitions, added color and energy.”

Kathryn said she looks forward to showcasing the work of

regional artists — both established and up-and-coming artists.

“Although I plan on specializing in fine craft (ceramics, wood, glass, fibers, metals), I also intend to show and sell fine art (paintings, drawings, sculpture).

Currently on display is raku pottery and jewelry by Pat Reiher, an art teacher at St. Mary’s Springs Academy; functional pottery by Heidi Clayton; oil paintings by Laura Pahlas; and metal sculptures by Laura’s brother John Pahlas, who is a former art student of Kathryn’s from Ripon. In addition, Kathryn’s own artwork consisting of oil paintings and functional pottery is at the gallery.

This winter, Kathryn hopes to open a ceramics teaching studio in the building — a place where she can teach ceramics and other arts to both adults and youths.

Riverwalk Art Center opened just in time for the downtown’s first Tour of the Town Art Walk, held in September. Kathryn is looking forward to the next art walk coming Friday night, Oct. 21.

“We will add paper sculptures by Lora Valshing and prints by Drew Bledsoe, plus a few more artists and media,” said

Kathryn, adding that she intends to be actively involved in the art walks.

She plans to have the artists present and will offer pottery-making demonstrations.

“Fond du Lac can become a destination for shoppers and people looking for cultural activities, especially if Tour the Town Art Walk takes off,” she said.
