Tagging your product

14

• Define

- Which products need to be tagged (materials, categories,…)

- Which information needs to be encoded

- Which factors need to be taken into account (e.g. size limits of label,

tag’s life span, performance criteria)

• Define when/where/how the tag will be encoded

• Ideally at the source (point of manufacturing)

• Alternatively in DC or in store

• Define when/where the tag will be scanned

• Analyse and modify internal processes

• Define resources/activities/processes to be outsourced

© GS1 2018

Tagging your product

15

1. Create sGTIN (Serialized Global Trade Item Number) to

identify item with unique serialized number

2. Encode the sGTIN in EPC tag based on GS1 standard (GS1 EPC Tag Data

Standard)

• Use RFID commissioning software

• GS1 Encoder

3. Attach RFID tag to item

• TIPP guidelines

• Sector guidelines (if available)

• EECC lab in Europe

Define and purchase equipment and secure services

16

• Define functional and technical needs/requirements/challenges

• Do your own research and compare solution providers

- System integrators

- Hardware suppliers

- Software suppliers

- RFID consultants

• GS1 EPC Gobal ‘Guidelines for selecting an implementation partner’

• Find a good helpdesk that supports you (in your time zone)

• Follow GS1 standards for better long-term efficiency

Define and purchase equipment and secure services

17

• Evaluate by testing

- Different types of tags (hang tag, sewed tags,…)

- Different types of clothing items (non-metal, metal, …)

- Different locations in store

- Different scanning equipment

© GS1 2018

Define and purchase equipment and secure services

18

• Select tags EPC Gen2 Protocol

• Define influences on performance of tags

- Item itself (e.g. lurex, water)

- Environment (e.g. other RF equipment)

- Proximity of other tags

• GS1 EPC Global ‘Guidelines for selecting tags’

• Monitor quality of tags

Define and purchase equipment and secure services

20

• Select readers

- Scanning environment

- Legally permitted RF

- Proximity of other readers

- Supporting all applications

- Back-end communication

• Depending on use case

Define and purchase equipment and secure services

21

• Select printer

- Compatibility with RFID tags

- Throughput

- Maintenance

- Connection with software

- Control mechanism

- Broad application (e.g. multiple suppliers)

Define and purchase equipment and secure services

22

• Select software

- Possibility to serialize

- Maintenance

- Need for middleware or total package?

- Integration with other systems (e.g. ERP)

- Compliance with EPCIS

Challenges for reading RFID tags with overhead readers

Real time stock▪ NOSBOS reporting.▪ We know real time when an article is no longer available in the store.▪ We can use real time stock for stock availability on G-Star.com (reduce no

sales).▪ Reserve stock in the system at the moment an online order is (hard)

allocated.

Data insights▪ View on movement of articles e.g. from fitting room to POS or back to

shelf.▪ Percentage of your stock that is in the stockroom / shopping floor

Financial stock ▪ Defects and staff clothes can be excluded from inventory trough POS

integration and improve store replenishment without losing visibility.

Advantages overhead readers compared with handheld only solution

▪ Do you want to achieve 99+% in one day or within seven days.▪ Can the system be visible or should it be hidden behind the sealing.▪ Take into consideration that the installation costs can be high with

certain solutions.▪ Vendors release each year new models of readers for lower prices.▪ Have a clear business case on what you want to achieve.▪ Review the advantages of a RFID POS integration.▪ Make sure that internal stakeholder are involved to avoid delays in

the roll out phase.▪ Set clear goals before the start of your pilot together with your

system integrator▪ Chose a system integrator that is a fit with your business culture.
