Hibernation Time

In these coldest months of the year, its hibernation time. We tend the fires to warm our homes. We also need to keep our inner fire stoked up to assist our immune systems and our bodies need to take deep rest. Yoga for this winter season focuses on activating the inner fires, then resting in restorative poses. In classes you’ll learn tapping and squeezing techniques to massage your own body, activate your meridians and warm the body. Postures will focus on warming sequences which strengthen the immune response. The studio is cosy for relaxing into hibernation at end of class.

Private Yoga Sessions

Would you benefit from an individual yoga session to fine tune your alignment or work out a program to meet your specific needs? A one-off or regular private session may assist with practicing yoga in ways that give you more therapeutic benefit to chronic issues with the body or with stress management. Focus on particular aspects of your practice from core strength to alignment to meditation.

Call or speak to Jen after class if you’d like to find out more: 0438 506 545 / 9544 7114. Many health funds will provide rebates for yoga.

YogaCalm Studio Networking

Many of the students coming to YogaCalm have their own businesses or part time services to offer. We practice yoga together and often don’t know that we could offer one another a local product or service. Feel free to email me some lines about anything you want to promote to the YogaCalm community. And, of course, YogaCalm is not responsible for the quality of the products or services promoted here.

Sunday Workshops

Cost: $20 per person, Please book!

Each fortnight from 1 - 3pm, themes as follows:

Sunday 3rd August: Yoga with Chakra awareness (with Jen) ’Chakra’ means wheel. Chakras are the energy centres located in the energy body. In this workshop we will explore the 7 main chakras from the base of the spine to the crown. You will learn yoga poses, breath awareness and meditations to balance and energise each chakra, Fun, colourful and fascinating!

Sunday 17th August, Flexibilities (with Uttam) Come and limber up every joint in your body and learn to harmonise breath and movement. Suitable for all, including beginners. Especially wonderful for people with sore, aching joints.

Sunday 31st August: Refresh and Revitalise (with Jen) We will play with a range of acupressure and massage techniques, breathing practices and yoga postures, all aiming to refresh and revitalise. A 30 minute yoga nidra to complete the pampering.

Our Sunday afternoon workshops always finish with 30 minutes of relaxation including yoga nidra (if you haven’t experienced the bliss of yoga nidra, come & give yourself a treat!).

Sunday 14th Sept: Pranayama and Meditation (with Uttam) ‘Prana’ means energy or life force, ‘yama’ means skill and nurturance. Pranayama practices teach you to slow, deepen and retain the breath, to achieve increased energy, vitality, contentment and health. The benefits from these simple practices can be profound and life changing.

Sunday 28th September: Partner yoga (with Jen facilitating) Bring your partner, your friend or just come along and we will match you up on the day! Practicing yoga with the support of another enables you to experience the poses more deeply, achieve better alignment with more ease and more fun!

“Let us prepare for winter. The sun has

turned away from us and the nest of summer

hangs broken in a tree. Life slips through

our fingers and as darkness gathers our hands

grow cold. It is time to go inside. It is time

for reflection and resonance. It is time for

contemplation. Let us go inside.” Michael Leunig

HOME PRACTICE for Winter WarmingTapping is a traditional chinese medicine practice. A wonderfully quick and effective way to warm your body, stimulate the body’s meridians (energy pathways), boost circulation, digestion, elimination, energise, release tension, bring a glow to your cheeks, and leave you feeling more enthusiastic and positive. Something to do often …especially if you are computer bound! Here are some ideas.

1. Tap the head: crown, sides & back of head, forehead, cheeks

5 & 6. Massage trapezius to release tight neck & shoulders: Gently chop the side of the neck, then squeeze sore spots on the shoulder, while you rotate the shoulder & arm.

4. Palm the eyes: rub hands together until hot, place palms over eyes, inhale & relax eye muscles. 3 times

9. Side stretch, holding elbows overhead, Left side, right side, Repeat 2 more times

8. Tap ribs and sides (gently!)

11. Tap lower back and buttocks

12. Tap thigh: top, back and each side. Squeeze knee, calves & shins

13. Rotate ankles, massage foot and toes. Tap sole of foot. Repeat 11-13 on other leg

14. Stand up and have a good stretch. How do you feel?

2. Massage the ears 3. Massage the TMJ (the jaw hinge in front of ears) and yawn

7. Tap with soft fist: Right side of chest, inside of arm, palm, back of hand & arm, then chest again. Say aaaahhhh. Repeat left side

10. Rub the belly. Clockwise circles (12 o’clock at pubic bone, 6 o’clock at navel)
