Six Questions Every Teen Should AskAbout Their Summer Job

The US Department of Labor estimates that millions of young people under theage of 24 are likely to join the labor force this summer. Some will find their firstpart-time job while others will land something more permanent.

In the excitement of a new job, though, it's important to remember that young, inexperienced workers are twice as likely to be injured on the job as their moreexperienced co-workers. According to the Centers for Disease Control, every yearmore than 50,000 youth are so badly injured at work that they need emergency med-ical treatment. And that figure doesn't include the numerous cuts, bruises, andstrains that don't require a trip to the hospital.

Why are these figures so high? Most experts point to inexperience and a lack ofthorough job training. The good news is that there are proven ways to avoid theinjuries that can result from inexperience.

Formal on-the-job training is among the best ways to learn about job hazards aswell as the safest methods for accomplishing the work. Young workers and theirparents should have an understanding of the safety risks associated with a new job. Most problems can be addressed by asking your employer a few simple questionsbefore you get started:

1)What are the hazards in this job? It's tough to keep yourself safe if you don'tknow what you should be keeping yourself safe from. Once you understand the haz-ards in your workplace, you can ensure that you're receiving proper training onmanaging them.

2)How much job safety training will I have? Employers are required by law toprovide job hazard training that's easy to follow. If you ever feel like you need aprocess explained further, don't hesitate or feel embarrassed to ask - it's alwaysworth the extra time and an injury is far worse than any momentary embarrassment!

3)Will I need to use safety gear, and if so, how? Employers may also be requiredby law to provide protective gear at no cost to you. Whether that means safety glass-es, ear plugs, or something else, make sure you can take every necessary precau-tion. If safety equipment is available to you, make sure you know how to use orwear it correctly.

4)If I have health and safety concerns, who do I ask? Whether it's your supervi-sor or a designated workplace safety coordinator, it's important for you to knowwho has the answers to your safety questions. Don't be afraid to speak up if you feelunsafe at any time during your workday.

5)What do I do in an emergency? Be sure to review your workplace's emergencyprotocol. Where is the nearest fire exit to your workstation? Do you have a desig-nated meeting spot once you're out of immediate danger? Ask whether youremployer holds regular emergency drills.

6)What should I do if I get hurt at work? It's important to report any injury yousustain in your workplace. Regardless of the injury's severity, your workplace safe-ty contact will be able to help you with applying first aid and filling out any neces-sary paperwork.

DISPLAY AD DEADLINEIS MONDAY AT 5 PM

GREETING AD DEADLINEIS MONDAY AT 5PM This checklist, form the Preventive Programs of the

Chicago Police Dept., is designed to help you preparea security survey of your residence. No property iscompletely burglar proof but these tips can help detera burglar.

The first purpose of a security inspection is to iden-tify features in your home, or the daily routines ofyour family which might make your property an easytarget for a burglar.

The security, inspection should begin at your frontwalk and include on inspection of all your doors, win-dows, locks, lights and landscaping. Each question onthe checklist that you answer with a “No” indicates asecurity weakness or hazard that requires your atten-tion.

For further information on crime prevention pleasecontact the Preventive Programs Unit at 312-745-5838. The Preventive Programs Unit will come toyour home or business and conduct a Security Surveyto assess the overall security of your facility. Also, thePreventive Programs Unit can arrange for a ChicagoPolice Officer to present a crime prevention programto your group or business on Burglary prevention.

Check List for DoorsAre all outside doors in the house of metal or wood?Yes NoAre door frames strong enough & tight enough to pre-vent forcing or spreading? Yes NoAre door hinges protected from removal from the out-side? Yes NoAre all door locks adequate & in good repair?Yes NoCan the locking mechanism be reached through a mailslot, window or pet entrance at the door? Yes NoIs there a screen or storm door with an adequate lock?Yes NoDoes the porch or landscaping offer concealmentfrom view from the street or public area? Yes No

Check List for WindowsDo all windows have adequate locks in operating con-dition? Yes NoDo windows have screens or storm windows that lockfrom the inside? Yes NoAre exterior areas of windows free from concealingstructure or landscaping? Yes NoIs the exterior adequately lighted at all window areas?Yes   NoAre ladders secured so that they are not accessible?Yes NoAre all basement windows adequately secured againstentrance? Y es No

Post this Checklist so it will regularly remind youof these important security tips.

Always use the locks on both your home and yourgarage. Lock up every time you go out, even if it's onlyfor a few minutes.

Never hide keys outside, such as under a bush or ina flowerpot. Burglars know where to find “secret” hid-ing places. It is much better to leave a key with atrusted neighbor.

Make sure that all windows are securely shut andlocked before you exit your residence. If a window isleft open make sure it is secured with a properlyinstalled window frame lock.

Make sure all porches and other possible entrancesare well lit, with at least 40-watt bulbs. A well-lit houseis for better protected than a house without lights.

Overgrown, bushes, tree limbs or landscaping canprovide cover for burglars. Trim them to the height ofporches or windows.

If you are out during the day or on vacation, use anautomatic timer to turn on lights and a radio at differ-ent times of the day. It is an easy way to disguise thefact they you are not at home.

Have a trusted neighbor pick up your mail andnewspapers every day while you are on vacation. Havea neighbor use your garbage cans occasionally. Duringthe winter arrange to have the snow shoveled and infall the leaves raked.
