Extreme Heat Health Warning With high temperatures expected to continue this weekend, Illinois Department of

Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck is urging Illinoisans to take preventiveactions during this extremely hot weather to avoid heat-related illness, such as heat-stroke. "It's important for people to recognize the signs of heat-related illness and takeaction to prevent becoming sick. High heat and humidity can lead to serious healthproblems," Dr. Hasbrouck said. "To help your body cope with high temperatures, take steps to stay cool, increase your fluid intake, decrease your activities and wearappropriate clothing."

Normally, the body cools itself by sweating. However, if temperatures and hu-midity are extremely high, sweating is not effective in maintaining the body's nor-mal temperature. If the body does not cool properly or does not cool enough, a personmay suffer a heat-related illness, which can become serious or even deadly if unat-tended. Heatstroke is caused by prolonged exposure to the heat. Symptoms of heat-stroke include:

Headache, Red, dry face, Skin hot to touch, Body temperature of 105 degrees For more, Loss of consciousness, Seizures/irregular heartbeat/heat stroke treatment -call 911; quickly cool the person in a cool bath or wrap wet sheets around them; ifthe victim refuses water, is vomiting or shows a decreased level of consciousness,do not give anything to eat or drink. Heat exhaustion can occur either indoors or out-doors, with or without exercise. Symptoms of heat exhaustion include:

Dizziness, Cool-clammy skin, Nausea, Heavy perspiration, Muscle tremors/cramping/heat exhaustion treatment - move the person to a cooler place; remove orloosen tight clothing; and apply cool, wet cloths; give cool water to slowly drink. Dr.Hasbrouck encourages Illinoisans to follow these prevention tips to beat the heatand related illness:

Drink more fluids, but avoid alcohol and caffeinated beverages. Drink a minimumof six to eight 8 ounce glasses of cool fluids daily. During heavy exercise, drink twoto four glasses of cool fluids each hour. Parents should be sure young children aredrinking enough.

Take cool showers, baths or sponge baths, which can reduce body temperatures.Protect your body. Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose-fitting clothing. When

spending time outdoors, avoid direct sunlight, wear a hat and use a sunscreen withSPF 15 or higher.

Never leave anyone, including pets, alone in a closed, parked vehicle. The air tem-perature inside a car rises rapidly during hot weather and can lead to brain damageor death.

Stay indoors and, if possible, stay in an air-conditioned place. If your home doesnot have air conditioning, go to a public place such as a cooling center, a senior cit-izen center, a church, a mall, the local YMCA or a center designated by your com-munity that does have air conditioning. Even a few hours spent in air conditioningcan help your body stay cooler when you go back into the heat. Fans alone will noteffectively cool an overheated person when air temperatures are above 90 degreesFahrenheit.

If you must go outside: Slow down and avoid strenuous activity. If you must dostrenuous activity, do it during the early morning or late evening hours when it iscooler.

Take regular breaks when engaged in physical activity on warm days. Try to restoften in shady or cool areas. If you recognize that you, or someone else, are show-ing signs of a heat-related illness, stop activity and find a cool place. Anyone can suf-fer from heat-related illness, but some people are at greater risk. Check regularly on:Infants and young children, People aged 65 or older, People who have mental ill-ness and those who are physically ill, esp. with heart disease or high blood pressure.

How Kids Perform Better In School

Children spend five times as much time outside theclassroom as they do in school. With all this time awayfrom teachers, it’s important for parents to supporttheir children’s learning.

In fact, children whose parents are involved withthem in family literacy activities score 10 points high-er on standardized reading tests, according to theNational Center for Family Literacy (NCFl).

“Learning can happen anywhere and at any time,”advises Emily Kirkpatrick,Vice Present of NCFL. “Gobeyond homework help and find learning moments ineveryday life that fit in with your schedule.”

Here are some tips for how you can take a moreactive role in your child’s education:

It all starts with you. With some preparation on yourpart, you can be a better resource for your child. Makesure that you, and those who spend time with yourchild, are well-equipped to support learning.

Turn a household shopping trip into a fun chance todo math. Take a walk outside to discuss nature or thecommunity. Make a lesson plan out of the worldaround you.

Develop a partnership with your child’s teachers.Talk with them about homework and be sure youunderstand what is expected.

Some children need and want time to play when

they get home, while others may want to get home-

work out of the way first thing. Set a schedule for your

child that works for him or her and make it a routine.

Just be sure that your expectations are clear.

Reinforce the idea that homework is not punish-

ment, but a chance to practice new skills. You can help

make it fun by rewarding progress.

Ask your children thought-provoking questions,

like what they wonder about. For inspiration you can

turn to free online resources that emphasize fun in

learning, such as www.wonderopolis.org.

Help set a timeline so that school assignments are

not left until the last minute. Older children with

assignments that will take several days or weeks to

complete may need your help learning to manage their

time.

Checking to be sure assignments are complete is

great, but don’t forget it is your child’s assignment, not

yours. Do not do homework for your child.

Read to your children or with them every night. Not

only is this an enjoyable way to spend time together, it

will benefit the child and help instill a love in learning.

By getting more involved, you can help your chil-

dren make this school year their most successful one

yet.
