Let’s hope they will also bring us some warmer spring weather. Blessed Sacrament Teen Center The Weekend of February twenty-second through the twenty-fourth, fifteen teens from the Blessed Sacrament After-School Teen Youth program traveled all the way to Dixon, IL for the annual Reach-out retreat at Reynoldswood Christian Camp. Also participating in the retreat were several other parishes from the greater Chicago area. Many of our teens made this retreat possible by attending weekly planning meetings in which the theme and format for the retreat was discussed. The retreat featured multiple witness talks from teens and adults, including four of our teens, that focused on the retreat’s theme, “He Loves You Yeah, Yeah, Yeah.” Teens also participated in small group discussion, skits, the planning of two masses, open mic night, Holy Hour and much more! On the final evening of the retreat all participants gathered around a bonfire and were serenaded by Blessed Sacrament’s own Darien Parlicke on guitar. UIC Game On Tuesday March twenty-sixth ten teens went to the University of Illinois at Chicago campus to see the UIC Flames take on Wright State in a close contest which eventually clinched the Flames a spot in the post-season. The final score was UIC sixty to Wright State’s fifty-five. Our Teens had the opportunity to pose for a picture with Flames mascot, Sparky! This program offers re- sources for all youth ages twelve to eighteen to enjoy a safe & relaxing atmosphere after school. Teens have the opportu- nity to get help with home- work, play sports, interact with other teens, do com- munity service, mentoring, boys and girls groups, youth ministry events, retreats & recreational activities/trips. The Youth Center is open on Sun. from seven to nine- thirty, Tuesday from three to six-thirty and Wednesday. through Friday from three to seven. The program’s staff is de- dicated to helping teens find safe and productive ways to spend their time. Hermitage Avenue above our Lady of Good Counsel Church. 2013 Youth of the Year Competition Bianca Frustaci was named Runner-Up in the An- nual Boys & Girls Clubs of Chicago Youth of the Year Competition. The event took place on March 12th at Navy Pier in which she bravely delivered her speech in front of 950+ guests. Bianca has demon- strated outstanding leadership while at the Club and school and within the community. She has been a member of the Club for the past 10 years and is cur- rently guiding members as the Art Instructor. CONGRATULATIONS, BIANCA! Valentine Club Summer Day Camp Summer Day Camp registration will begin Monday, April 1st at 9am. This program serves youth between the ages of 6 to 12 years old which starts Monday, July 1st through Friday, August 16th. There will be an AM session from 8AM-1PM ($195), PM session from 1PM- 6PM ($195) and an ALL DAY session from 8AM-6PM ($390). A $20 annual membership is also required in order to attend the program. All the fees include: sports, art, computers, game room activities, swimming, educational workshops, 1 field trip a week for half-day sessions, 2 field trips a week for the ALL DAY session, lunch/snack, t-shirt, and bag. Mount Carmel Team Donates To St. Baldrick’s Foundation Mount Carmel High School students had a lot to cel- ebrate at their St. Baldrick’s assembly when more than 60 students, staff and friends of the Caravan shaved their heads as a symbol of solidarity with pediatric can- cer patients. In the process, they raised more than $188,000.00 for the St. Baldrick’s Foundation which supports pediatric cancer research. Fr. Tony Mazurkiewicz, O. Carm., President of Mount Carmel High School, Sophomore Michael Melchiorre and Patrick Elwood of FOX Chicago, shaved their heads at Mount Carmel’s St. Bal- drick’s assembly to raise money for pediatric cancer research. Sophomore Michael Melchiorre is leading the way in St. Baldrick’s donations with a total of $176,972.00 at the last count. In fact, Melchiorre is currently top- ping the St. Baldrick’s charts as the top fundraiser in the entire nation, leading the nation’s second place fundraiser by more than 200%. In 2012 Melchiorre, fin- ished third nation-wide in total donations and in 2011 he finished first. Melchiorre helped lift the Caravan to a grand total of $188,447 in donations as of Friday, March 15. Those students and faculty members who did not shave their heads found other ways to participate in the St. Baldrick’s celebration. Whether singing karaoke, competing in relays or donating money to throw a pie at their favorite faculty members, Mount Carmel stu- dents enthusiastically supported the cause. The St. Baldrick’s Day assembly takes place during Mount Carmel’s Spirit Week. A spring tradition at Mount Carmel which is organized by the Student Council, students participate in a number of events throughout the week designed to promote community and school spirit. Other Spirit Week events include a faculty-student basketball game and intramural cham- pionships. Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation Hosts Ricobene’s Night John McNicholas was just a sophomore at St. Rita, looking forward to the start of the baseball season when a malignant inoperable brain tumor was diagnosed in April of 2010. Though John fought a courageous battle, he died January 2011. Through their grief his parents started this founda- tion in his memory to raise money to fund research to a grossly underfunded segment of pediatric cancers. The award ceremony was held at Moraine Valley Commu- nity College in Palos Hills on Monday March 11, 2013. There were a little over 1,000 applications this year. 160 grammar schools participated from the 3rd Con- gressional District. There were a total of 100 finalists in the categories of 7th grade boy and girl of the year and 8th grade boy and girl of the year. These 100 finalists had to go through an interview process with a panel of judges from Congressman Lipinski’s office. Our school had 3 other finalists, Valerie Corral, Mia Avalos and Robert Flores. Maria Students Visit Federal Courts

Seniors students from Maria High School observed court in session during afield trip to the Dirksen Federal Building.

Maria High School Advanced Placement Government students had the opportu-nity to see the judicial branch of the federal government in action when they visit-ed the Dirksen Federal Building. Accompanied by teacher Will Hoffman, the stu-dents observed one phase of a money laundering trial and participated in a questionand answer session with a federal judge and the defense attorney.

Holden School NewsThere is no question that it has been a very busy sec-

ond quarter for Holden Elementary. As a result of allthat has been going on, be it ISAT testing, the threat ofschool closures and of course a cold and gloomySpring Break, we have some exciting announcements.

First off, Holden School has a new and improvedwebsite to better connect parents and the communitywith the happenings of the Holden School. The NEWHOLDEN WEBSITE is intended to provide parents,students and staff quick and easy access to communi-cations related to Holden School throughout the schoolyear.

We are encouraging everyone to explore andbecome familiar with the new website and all it has tooffer by going to (www.Holdenschool.org). In thecoming weeks, there will be additional informationand updates posted that will help parents connectschool to home so that their children can be supportedin their academics outside of school.

The site currently provides quick access to calendarsand news so everyone stays in tune with upcomingactivities, events, surveys, assessment schedules &much, much more.

I would also like to extend an extra special thanks toall of our parents that participated in taking the DressCode Survey. The results of the survey helped guidethe decision making process, which resulted in theLocal School Council voting in favor of a NEWDRESS CODE POLICY for Holden School. This dresscode policy will take effect in the upcoming 2013-2014 school year. Under this dress code policy, stu-dents grades PreK-8 will be required to come to schooleach day dressed according to the guidelines of thedress code policy.

To make the transition as easy and economical aspossible over the next five months, detailed informa-tion regarding specific vendors and incentives will bemade available to all families in April. In the mean-time, the new Dress Code Policy is available forreview on our websi te (click under News &Announcements to find out more about the details).

As a reminder REPORT CARD PICK-UP is nextweek WEDNESDAY, APRIL 17th. Keep an eye outfor more information that will be sent home this weekwith students regarding the timeframe for picking upyour child’s report card. We look forward to seeing allour parents/ guardians on that day.

2013 Clean and GreenBeautification Effort

The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitationinvites residents and community groups to volunteer tohelp revitalize their neighborhoods by participating inthe 2013 Clean and Green citywide beautification ef-fort on Saturday, April 20.

“The Clean and Green event is a great opportunityfor residents to come together to observe Earth Daywhile pitching in to take care of their neighborhood,”said Charles L. Williams, commissioner, ChicagoDepartment of Streets and Sanitation.

“By volunteering for just a few hours to assist withtasks like raking leaves, weeding, or removing litterthat has accumulated during the winter, residents canhelp beautify the city and build community pride.”

Community groups who wish to participate areasked to identify a worksite and contact 311 to register.The Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation canprovide the brooms, rakes, shovels and bags needed tocomplete each cleaning project.

Individuals who wish to participate can also call 311to be referred to Clean and Green activities in theirarea. Anyone interested in participating in the programis encouraged to register by April 12.

In 2012, approximately 375 community groups par-ticipated in the Clean and Green program.
