A driving force in the continual reconstruction of New Orleans, REBOUND seeks to enliven the city’s people by reinterpreting the common vision of the library. This ultimate public amenity is defined by equal parts knowledge and community, emphasizing our human desire to share our pursuits both virtually and physically in an increasingly disconnected world. Within, reading and browsing opportunities vary in scope from traditional to virtual. Above, reading spaces are characterized by a light and open atmosphere allowed by the clear span, emphasizing the expansive view of the river flowing steadily below. Meanwhile, virtual browsing bays populate the lower level of the building and serve as the main interface between library goers and the AS/RS (Automated Storage and Retrieval System). Emphasizing digital technology, this approach seeks to enable users of all ages and interests while connecting the public as part of a larger civic body of shared knowledge.

Selected for its beauty and strength, steel lends efficiency and economy to the overall scheme in the form of composite trusses. Exposure of the structural elements reveals the rigor of the cantilevered form while paying homage to the steel yards that once dominated this stretch of riverfront. A formal language of deconstruction applied to the cladding scheme for views and accessibility relies on a system of steel tensile elements, revealing the structure further. By developing the landscape into a sculptural plinth and access point for everyone while serving as a bridge crossing the site’s existing train lines, REBOUND activates the riverfront.

9800-CLOUD in conjunction with Max Warman and Matt Catrow

Exploring the gap between textiles and digital fabrication, 9800-cloud utilizes the idea of the soft joint, turning a field of rigid plywood components into a quilt. A grasshopper script was generated to define a grid of 9800 triangles which were then deformed using attractor points to scew the cell sizes and scale the secondary apertures within the cells. The flat pattern is altered and offset for the layered materials (wood - chipboard - felt) to take advantage of their structural and visual qualities, and is then broken up into 18”x32” sheets to be laser cut. This sheet based method of assembly decreased build time and allows for rapid serial gluing. This combination, flexible but sturdy, allows the flat piece to be suspended from the ceiling and fall comfortably into a number of attractively curvatious three-dimensional forms.

A novel system that appropriates common cyclonic technology into a passive wall component, Airbrick is an invention that aids in air purification for buildings and architectural structures. By integrating this passive air-filtering system into the architecture, we eliminate the need for a secondary system that occupies space and requires expertise to install and maintain. Therefor, this building component can be utilized almost anywhere regardless of infrastructure or wealth. Testing of the bricks has shown that such a wall can successfully eliminate dust, pollen, car exhaust particulates and other harmful particles from the air, providing people with better interior air quality. This brick was designed with the end goal to make fabrication kits widely available in third world countries with poor air quality. Patent pending.

1/ REBAR + GROUT

Cavities to accommodate rebar and grout giving the wall structural integrity.

2/ GRATE PROTECTION

A protective grate prevents insects and other debris from blocking the couplers air intake.

3/ DUST COLLECTION

Particles are collected in a channel at the base of the wall, which is to be emptied every few months.

Every site has an inherent sense of place within it that architecture must address. Following careful documentation and analysis of the site, we designed a temporary installation that engaged passersby. A narrow corridor, the site is a mere circulation path in which people rarely stop to experience the space; the giant industrial vents and colored pipes often go unnoticed. paraSITE was designed to draw peoples attention, make them stop and experience their surroundings. 55,700 yards of thread was tensioned between the ground and the vent above, created a haze of color that is perceived differently depending on one’s distance to it. By generating an inflection in someones path, they are forced to adjust their body, their trajectory and their awareness to either circumvent or interact with the installation.

SUPPORT STRUCTURE - Fitting perfectly around the curvature of the vent, the plywood frame was used as a support for the final installation. Once painted the same tone of orange as the vent, the frame almost disappeared blending into its context. This allows viewers to focus on the string itself. A multitude of small metallic eye hooks were screwed in place, enabling us to eventually run the thread from the ground to the vent above.

The Metamorphosis theme is grounded in the increasing need for adaptable architecture and flexibility in design. Challenged to embrace a design that has multiple functions, iterations and uses, our team of five set out to build a temporary dwelling that would enable us to inhabit Poly Canyon for the night. The transient nature of the project, adaptability to the slope, transportation to the site and protection against the elements were all problems to be addressed.

Cantilevered triangles provide an elevated surface to sleep on. 1” diameter steel conduit is used to form triangular frames big enough to accomodate three people on each platform.

Page 15: Fabrication - Natacha Schnider

Holes drilled into the steel conduit every 2” enable bungee cord to be weaved between the conduit frame. Triangular pieces of tarp are then overlaid in order to provide a flat and comfortable surface to sleep on.
