Nearly 150 million hectares of forest worldwide are managed according to FSC standards in April 2012.

With certified forests in 80 countries on 5 continents, FSC is the leading standard for responsible certification.

Small and community producers manage 24% of all FSC Forest Management certificates: 7% of all FSC certified area worldwide.

In April 2012 there were 1114 FM Certificates in the FSC system, including 414 Group Certificates, representing around 250,000 group members, the majority of which are small and community producers.

Over 800 members from more than 80 countries, an equal representation of social, economic, and environmental interests, work through consensus to lead FSC.

FSC is the world’s leading forest certification scheme with 45 national representations.

FSC forest management certificates have been issued in 80 countries; FSC chain of custody certificates have been issued in 105 countries.

27 certification bodies worldwide are accredited and working to audit manufacturers, traders, forestry operations, printers and many more for FSC.

The FSC certified forest area in Russia neared the 30 million hectare milestone in April 2012, up from 20 million hectares in 2008.

FSC certified forest area increased significantly in Canada, from 28,5 million hectares in January 2009 to 44 million hectares in April 2012.

FSC certification in China is taking off, with 2012 Chain of Custody certificates currently issued, more than double the number of certificates issued in 2010.

FSC CoC certification verifies material from FSC certified forests through the production process - from the forest through processing companies, manufacturing, to the consumer.

CoC certificates enable the FSC label to provide the link between responsible production and consumption.

23,038 FSC CoC certificates have been issued in 105 countries as of April 2012.

FSC CoC certification grew more than 100% since 2008, from 10,119 to 23,038.

A survey found a 28.2% prompted recognition of the FSC label.

According to a survey 43% of people in the UK recognise the FSC logo - up from just 19% four years ago.

More people are choosing FSC certified products, with 33% saying they’d seen the label on things they’d bought.

Certification in forest and wood processing plays a key role in fighting violations of workers’ rights in subcontracting.

Key conclusion from the conference “BWI strategies to promote decent work and sustainable development through certification in the forest and wood processing industry”, 1-2 July 2010, Tuhelj, Croatia.

The survey was developed and sent out by the Center for Evaluation and Methods at the University of Bonn, Germany in 15 languages and FSC received responses from 5032 FSC certificate holders in 109 countries. This included both Chain of Custody (CoC) and Forest Management (FM) certificate holders.
