www.heritagevalley.org/fmr Stephen Hagberg, MD Program Director Dr. Hagberg graduated magna cum laude from Grove City College in 1999 after earning B.S. degrees in Molecular Biology and Psychology. In 2003, he earned his Doctor of Medicine degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia, PA while on scholarship through the Air Force Health Professions Scholarship Program. During medical school, he was elected a member of the AOA honorary. He then completed his Family Medicine Residency at Eglin Air Force Base in Florida. Following graduation, he was stationed at Misawa Air Base in Japan where he spent the next three years. During this assignment, he also completed one tour of duty in Iraq as Officer in Charge of the Detainee Health Operations at Camp Bucca. Following his separation from the Air Force, he joined the Heritage Valley Medicine Residency Program faculty where he taught until transitioning into his current role as Program Director. He is also a graduate of the Faculty Development Fellowship at Michigan State University and his special interests in medicine include procedures and sports medicine. Dr. Hagberg is happily married with 10 children. He enjoys spending time at home with his family as well as snowboarding, golfing, and building things in the backyard with his boys. Vikram Arora, MD, MPH Family Medicine Faculty Dr. Arora is originally from India and was born and brought up in its capital city of New Delhi. He finished his medical schooling from Maulana Azad Medical College, where his achievements ranged from asthma research, to captaining the college basketball team. Following graduation, he joined Temple University Family Medicine Program at Allentown, PA. During his residency he was nominated Chief Resident and was recipient of the Paul L. Hermany Excellence in Teaching award. After completing his residency, he joined group practice for two years, in addition to running an urgent care center and being a part-time employee health physician at the hospital. His clinical interests include physician patient communication, evidenced based medicine, patient education and efficient utilization of information technology resources for advancement of patient care. Dr. Arora received his MPH degree from the Graduate School of Public Health at the University of Pittsburgh. In June of 2006, he had taken the bold step of pursuing teaching as career in family medicine by joining a two year faculty development fellowship program at UPMC St. Margaret. He finished his fellowship in 2008 with scholarly projects in “Internet as a Patient Education and Communication Tool” and “Impact of Patient Literacy on Diabetic Patient Education. Lindsay Heiple, DO Osteopathic Program Director Dr. Heiple graduated from Canisius College in 2009 with a B.S. in Biology and a minor in music. She attended Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and earned her medical degree in 2013. She is a graduate of the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Residency Program in 2016, where she served as the chief resident in her last year. She also completed a Targeted Area of Concentration in Faculty Development. She joined the residency program as a faculty member upon graduation. Dr. Heiple’s area of interest includes the integration of Osteopathic medicine and principles into daily practice and she looks forward to maintaining this as a focus of what she teaches residents and students. Dr. Heiple is married to a fellow graduate of the family medicine residency program. She enjoys spending time baking, along with being outdoors biking and hiking. She is looking forward to expanding her family by adopting a dog or two in the near future. Dr. Lindsay Heiple and her husband, Dr. Brad Heiple, are expecting their first child, a baby girl in September of this year!

Stephen Hagberg, MDProgram Director

Paul F. Bell, PhDDirector of Behavioral Science Training

Dr. Bell is a licensed psychologist and full time faculty member of the residency program. As director of the behavioral science curriculum, he trains resident physicians in behavioral medicine, disease prevention, communication and counseling skills, and recognition and treatment of psychological/psychiatric conditions. Recent research and clinical interests have focused on identifying e�ective models for integrating behavioral health and primary care medicine.

Dr. Bell received his doctoral training at the University of Cincinnati. Current and past academic and clinical appointments include the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, The Pennsylvania State University College of Medicine, and Northern Kentucky University.

Quynh Chu, MDFamily Medicine Faculty

Dr. Chu was born and raised in Vietnam, where she earned her medical degree from Pham Ngoc Thach University School of Medicine. She �nished her residency training at The Institute for Family Health, Mid-Hudson Family Medicine Residency Program in New York. She has always been interested in teaching activities and scienti�c research; therefore, after residency, she joined UPMC St. Margaret Faculty Development Fellowship Program. Through her fellowship training, she practiced as a junior faculty in various clinical settings. She acquired diverse skill sets in learning, teaching and scholarly activities that enhanced her passion for academic medicine and equipped her to become an exemplary faculty. She was appointed Clinical Assistant Professor of Family Medicine at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine, Department of Family Medicine. Her area of clinical interest is Addiction Medicine, including medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for opioid use disorder. She has

witnessed the rewarding impact of MAT on her patients and their families, and looks forward to transferring her clinical experience to future medical students and residents.

In her free time, she loves creative writing. She was a writer prior to becoming a doctor and has two short-stories novels published. Most recently, she received a runner-up award at a writing contest in Family Doctor – a Journal of New York State Academy of Family Physician. She also enjoys outdoor activities and quality time with her family.

Robert E. Deacon, MDDirector of Pediatric Training

Dr. Deacon graduated from Brown University in 1992 with a B.S. in Biology. After �nishing medical school at the Medical College of Pennsylvania, he was accepted into the pediatric residency program at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh. He served an additional year as chief resident before joining Tri-State Pediatrics in 2000. His group is one of the largest in Pennsylvania serving more than 40,000 patients.

Dr. Deacon enjoys time away from work with his two children and the surest way to distract him is to ask him how Ben and Katie are doing.

Kevin C. Dumpe, MDDirector of OB/GYN Training

Dr. Dumpe graduated with a B.A. in psychology from Allegheny College in 1978 and earned his medical degree at Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. He completed his specialty training in OB/GYN at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh in 1986, where he served as chief resident.

Dr. Dumpe then served as an o�cer in the U.S. Air Force until 1990. While stationed at Gri�ss Air Force Base in upstate New York, he served as chairman of the OB/GYN department and Chief of Surgical Services. He was also certi�ed as a �ight surgeon during his military service.

He joined the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Residency Program faculty in 1990 as Director of OB/GYN Training.Dr. Dumpe is a member of the Christian Medical and Dental Associations and the American Association of Pro-Life Obstetricians and Gynecologists. He and his physician wife have four children. Any extra time is spent pretending he can still be a low handicap golfer.

Piper Kilpatrick, MDFamily Medicine Faculty

Dr. Kilpatrick is a primary care sports medicine specialist who enjoys treating patients with any sport related medical issue. He focuses primarily on musculoskeletal injuries, but treats a wide array of conditions from pulmonary to cardiology to dermatology and everything in between.

His goal is to return his patients to the highest level of athletics be it sport, dance, or job in the shortest amount of time. He also attempts to provide education on injury prevention in order to help his patients avoid his o�ce if at all possible. He performed his medical training at UPMC St. Margaret in Family Medicine and completed an accredited "sports medicine" fellowship at UPMC Shadyside, working as a team physician with the Pittsburgh Penguins, Pittsburgh Passion, Robert Morris University, and Mt. Lebanon High School.

Dr. Kilpatrick is a member of the faculty at the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Residency Program and is active in community health education. He is the head team physicians for Geneva College Athletics and serves as Medical Director of Heritage Valley SportsCare.

Jessica Duca, MSS, LSWSocial Work Case Manager

Jessica Duca, MSS, LSW, graduated from Geneva College in 1999 with a B.A. in Sociology and a minor in Psychology. After graduation, Jessica spent a summer building houses with Habitat for Humanity as an Americorps member in Dallas, TX.

Wanting to pursue social work as her life’s passion, Jessica went on to complete her Master’s of Social Service at Bryn Mawr College’s School of Social Work and Social Research in 2006. While in Philadelphia, PA and Arlington, VA, Jessica also worked in the �elds of foster care, child care assistance and advocacy, and behavioral health.

Jessica began medical social work at UPMC Shadyside in 2010 on the stem cell transplant and oncology units.Jessica joined Heritage Valley Beaver as a social work case manager in 2011 and has really enjoyed working in acute care. Jessica is very excited for the opportunity to work with and serve the Beaver Falls and Beaver County community as an outpatient social worker. She is very interested learning how to improve patient outcomes by increasing awareness about community programs and services that could support general, �nancial, spiritual, and emotional wellbeing.

James H. Lauer, MDOB/GYN Faculty

Dr. Lauer earned his B.A. degree in biology at Franklin and Marshall College and his medical degree from Georgetown University. He completed his residency in obstetrics/gynecology at Georgetown University Hospital where he served as Chief Resident.

Dr. Lauer served four years as an OB/GYN Physician in the U.S. Air Force at Gri�ss Air Force Base in Rome, New York. He served as chief of the Department of Obstetrics/Gynecology and of Anesthesia Services. He joined the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Residency Program faculty in 1992. He also works in private practice with The Primary Health Network. Dr. Lauer is married and has three children. His interests include

computers, reading novels, and family time. He is also active in medical mission activities with his church and has been to Haiti �ve times.

Jonathan McKrell, MDFamily Medicine Faculty

Dr. McKrell completed his undergraduate education at the University of Pennsylvania with a B.A. in Biology in 1981. He attended medical school at the University of Pittsburgh, graduating in 1985 and completed his Family Practice Residency at Aultman Hospital in Canton, OH in 1988, serving as Co-Chief Resident during his third year.

Dr. McKrell has spent over two decades in Family Medicine Residency education at several di�erent programs. During that time, he spent 11 years as the Director of a Primary Care Sports Medicine fellowship. Dr. McKrell is board certi�ed in both Family Medicine and Sports Medicine.

Dr. McKrell is excited about this next chapter in his career at the Heritage Valley Family Medicine ResidencyProgram. He is eager to pursue clinical and teaching opportunities in sports medicine and musculoskeletal care with the residents. He considers it a privilege to help residents to grown into con�dent, well-rounded, independent family physicians. Dr. McKrell is married, has three grown children, and became a grandfather in 2014. In addition to his love of sports of almost any kind, he enjoys gardening and home projects.

Autumn Stewart, PharmD, BCACP, CTTSFamily Medicine Faculty

Dr. Stewart is a 2004 graduate of the Duquesne University, Mylan School of Pharmacy. She completed a Community Practice Pharmacy Residency and has since worked in a variety of settings as a clinical pharmacist including end-of-life care and a free health care center for the medically under-served. In 2008 she became a full-time clinical faculty member in the Duquesne University, Mylan School of Pharmacy and in this role has developed clinical pharmacy services at the Heritage Valley Family Medicine Center. Dr. Stewart enjoysmentoring students and developing pharmacy practice models focused on interprofessional learning and patient-centered collaborative care.

Her research interests include expanding the role of the pharmacist in primary care settings through medication reconciliation services and innovative pedagogy. She is a Board Certi�ed Ambulatory Care Pharmacist and a

Certi�ed Tobacco Treatment Specialist.

David G. Thimons, DOFamily Medicine Faculty

Dr. David Thimons, DO is currently the Director of Geriatrics and the Osteopathic Director of Medical Education for the Family Medicine Residency Program at Heritage Valley Beaver. He also serves as co-medical director of the RAVEN Project (a CMS Innovations grant awarded to care for nursing home patients throughout Western Pennsylvania). Dr. Thimons was a graduate of the residency program in 2000 and joined as a faculty member in April of 2010.

Along with his other positions, Dr. Thimons serves as medical director of Villa St. Joseph Nursing Home, medical director of Beaver Valley Nursing and Rehab Center, associate medical director of Good Samaritan

Hospice, and is a clinical assistant professor of Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine where he graduated from medical school.
