Better at Bath Our course brings together architectural design and engineering so you can create spaces that are practical and sustainable as well as beautiful. You’ll learn how to design buildings with low-carbon footprints and a focus on comfortable and healthy living. There is a need for trained professionals who know how to reduce the environmental impact of construction. We’ll help you develop your design and technical skills throughout the course to meet this need.

You’ll apply engineering principles and your understanding of how people use buildings to come up with building design solutions. The new concepts and technologies you’ll explore will help you graduate with the skills to develop sustainable building strategies.

We also give you the opportunity to take a five-day intensive course in Passivhaus design. This trains you to become a qualified Passivhaus designer or consultant. There is an extra cost for taking this course.

Learn from experts in the fieldBased in our Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, you’ll learn from academics with expertise in the effects of climate change on the built infrastructure and the need for sustainable development. Their international collaborations and research activity feed into our teaching and contribute to your learning experience.

Use specialist facilities We have a range of facilities to support your studies including environmental monitoring facilities and an artificial sky with light meters. You’ll also have access to specialist computer and software facilities for environmental modelling.

Professional and research skills for the construction industryGain the essential knowledge and train in a range of professional skills and research techniques for the construction sector.

Project and construction managementDevelop the project and construction management understanding needed to work effectively on multidisciplinary construction projects.

Environmental performance of materials and buildingsYou’ll explore how the different elements of a building work independently and together, focusing on energy flow, occupants environmental impact and low- carbon building performance. You’ll also develop an understanding of construction material choices.

Building integrated environmental systemsLearn how to integrate technological systems into building design to improve environmental performance in a holistic manner. This includes shading devices, lighting, ventilation strategies and renewable energy resources.

Assessment and modelling toolsDevelop your knowledge of modelling tools that make energy and environmental assessments on aspects of building design. You’ll focus on both individual elements and buildings as a whole.

SEMESTER 2 ONLY (February to May)

Multidisciplinary projectWork with students from other construction-related MSc courses to develop a building design. Investigate aspects related to your MSc in depth.

SUMMER (June to September)

Dissertation Carry out fundamental or applied research in a topic relevant to your studies. You’ll be supervised by one of our academic experts and supported by other staff.

Better at Bath Our course is for engineers who want to develop their knowledge further and specialise in automotive engineering and technologies. Exploring research and development in this sector, your studies will focus on the design, performance and operation of automotive powertrains and vehicle systems. You’ll build on your existing engineering skills and apply them to the challenges of the automotive industry.

You’ll look in depth at developments in low-carbon and sustainable powertrain and propulsion systems and the future technologies of vehicles. Industry needs innovative engineers who can create the next generation of vehicles, and this course is geared specifically towards equipping you with those skills. You’ll learn how to develop sustainable solutions for the vehicles we build and the processes we use.

Learn from experts in the fieldFrom downsizing internal combustion engines and turbo-charging small engines, to alternative fuels, hybrid vehicles and electric vehicles, our course draws on the specialist automotive research in our Department of Mechanical Engineering. Vehicle engineeringLearn whole-vehicle design concepts including engine management, on-board diagnostics and braking and transmission systems.

Turbocharging and engine boostingLearn about turbocharging and boosting systems in internal combustion engines. Analyse turbocharger and supercharger interactions, performance and component design.

Engineering systems simulationUnderstand the role of simulation in design. Use mathematical modelling software like Simulink and Matlab to model complex engineering systems.

Professional skills for engineering practiceDevelop the communication, planning and critical evaluation skills needed to perform at a postgraduate professional level and as an engineer.

ProjectFamiliarise yourself with the methods and techniques used in engineering research and design projects, including data analysis, project scoping and planning.

Vehicle dynamics and aerodynamicsDescribe a vehicle system’s engineering dynamics including how suspension works, how to predict vehicle ride behaviour and steady-state handling performance.

Conceptual design group activityWork in a team to investigate and solve a multidisciplinary engineering problem.

Better at Bath We offer you the unique opportunity to learn how to design and manage conservation projects while studying in a UNESCO World Heritage site. Taught by experts in the field, our course focuses on preserving historic buildings and cultural heritage worldwide. You’ll gain knowledge of philosophical approaches to conserving the built environment and its significance within the context of international standards and charters. You’ll also explore materials, techniques, traditional constructional principles and structural behaviour.

To learn about conservation in practice, you’ll visit and work on case studies at historic buildings sites in the UK. These help you understand how our built heritage is repaired and re-used, and develop your technical and communication skills. Study the theory and practice of preserving historic architecture and cultural heritage sites in one of the world’s most culturally significant cities.

It is also fully recognised by the Institute of Historic Buildings Conservation (IHBC).

Entry requirementsTo apply for this course, you should have an undergraduate degree in any discipline relating to the built environment including architecture, engineering, surveying, planning, geography, archaeology, history or management.

We will also consider your application if you have an undergraduate degree in other disciplines, such as history of art, and wish to gain a vocational degree.

Better at Bath Our course builds your skills in leadership and management and teaches you how to apply them in an engineering context. You’ll explore the impact of new technologies and how they relate to management in the engineering sector. Your studies will include business analysis, product development and supply chain management.

Gain professional experienceYou’ll spend a minimum of three months in a professional practice between June and December, running parallel with your research dissertation. A placement is an opportunity for you to apply what you’ve learnt by working on industry-driven research topics. Some of our students have been on placement at ARUP, BRE, and Mott MacDonald. You can start your placement any time between June and the end of August.

We will do our best to help you find a placement and guide you through the process. Our partnerships team runs employability workshops covering CV writing and interview techniques, and preparing an application. We cannot guarantee you a position so if you are unable to secure a placement, you’ll transfer on to our 12-month alternative course and graduate with an MSc in Low-Carbon Building Design.

Better at Bath Our course is for engineers and scientists who want to play a leading role in innovating, designing and managing sustainable processes and systems. Improving resource efficiency is a priority for process industries that rely on materials and energy. We focus on giving you the tools to find sustainable ways to do more or better with less.

Building on your first degree, you’ll develop more in-depth knowledge and transferable skills in chemical engineering. You’ll learn how to use material and energy resources more efficiently by:

• minimising resource consumption and waste generation

• recovering, valorising and re-using waste within a process
