We also discuss, debate and vote on pronouncements on behalf of the General Synod. This is where the most confusion comes concerning our United Church of Christ. We are a denomination, a gathering of churches held together, not by hierarchy but by covenant. In our polity (church system of governance) each local church is “a wholly owned and operated” member of the denomination. The actions of anyone, or any body, what could be seen as a diocese, national church, or the equivalent of the Vatican, is not binding on the local church nor do they speak for the local church. This can be very confusing in a world where there are bishops archbishops and popes. We have no such positions. We are all in this by ourselves. No one to bail us out, pay our bills or solve our problems for us. As you can imagine this has its good and bad dimensions to it. For example, if a church is behaving badly towards its clergy, the Regional Minister can come and speak with those involved, can make recommendations, but has no power to enact a change. Ordained clergy are clergy by their adherence in good faith with the denomination. This is held by the local Association in our case, Litchfield South. A number of years ago, a late member of our congregation called me because of an issue that was taken up by the General Synod that particular year. I asked to speak with this person face-to-face and cleared up the misunderstanding of our polity. The General Synod speaks to Church and Society but not for the local church. Now many of you wonder what’s the point to being a part of a denomination for which there is no power over the local church? What do we get out of it, you may ask? I would encourage you to consider that in the midst of this covenanted denomination are a great number of resources that we come to count on as a church. It may be in the person of the Conference Minister or Regional Minister who helps us to see best practices, or the sharing of the most recent thinking about what societal changes are happening that affect every church, no matter the denomination. It could be something like the offering of the life-changing experiences at Silver lake for our young people. I will be assigned to a working committee while at Synod and will hear presentations about the particular subject assigned and then listen as we debate and work to a consensus in the midst of the working of We Are A Community Seeking To Share God’s Love!

Pastoral Reflections The Reverend David F. Peters, Minister

Later this month, I will have the privilege of attending the 32nd General Synod of the United Church of Christ. This bi-annual meeting will be held in Milwaukee, Wisconsin from June 21 through June 26. I will be representing the Litchfield South Association, the UCC churches in southern Litchfield County. There will be worship, discussion and study sessions and networking with the many delegates and visitors. There will be a wide range of opinions and viewpoints and through the gift of God’s Holy Spirit, we hope to come to some consensus about the future directions of the United Church of Christ. God’s Holy Spirit. It is my hope that I will come back refreshed and awakened to some of the latest thinking about the church and ways of moving ahead. I ask for your prayers as I travel there and back and for the experience while a delegate on your behalf. See you in church. David I will be at Synod June 23 and arriving back in town late on June 27th I will miss you at worship on June 23rd.

thank you Thank you to Jonathan Lord and crew of Lord Tree Service for helping to unclog the gutter on the Meetinghouse. Thank you to everyone who helped during Spring Work

Day including our Boy Scout Troop 65. Thank you to everyone who gave blood on May 10. Thank you to everyone who purchased Mother’s Day

cards from our Mission Committee to benefit Church World Services. Thank you to Joan Temple, Judy Larson and Beverly

Wolmer for organizing the reception after the Funeral for Harry Peatt.

From Sue Stauffacher: Our May rummage/bake sale was a success in so many ways. It allowed folks to clear out some "stuff" from their homes, allowed folks to purchase this "stuff", allowed the church to be the recipient of those dollars spent, and helped our efforts in the recycling circle. This is a community event, and the people were lined up out to the street when we opened the door. That is such a happy scene for me to see. It also benefits the clients of a ministering organization in Waterbury that picks up all our leftovers. These items help veterans, people who lost their homes due to fire, etc., people coming out of shelters into homes, and countless other needy folks. I wish to thank everyone who played a part in this event. Every one of you helps in this total effort. I especially want to thank those folks who worked with me during the prior week in sorting and placing items and clothing. It's a huge job. I cannot imagine doing it without you. Our new guidelines for accepting clothing worked very well, and we'll continue with them. Our bake table was overflowing with wonderful delicacies that folks bought. Thank you to all the bakers who made this possible. Another thank you to those who helped by pricing specific areas. And, of course, to everyone who donated their treasures for sale and those who bought them. Thank you to the "day of" workers, the cashiers/baggers, coffee makers, folks who help answer questions, carry items to cars, etc. Folks tell us they love our sale and come from some distance to participate. Our church has a good reputation in the community at large. I thank those faithful folks who help with setting up and taking down after the sale. It is a lot of work, I know. So far, the profit from this event is $1,958.50. More will be coming in, so stay tuned....

CT Conference Meeting report In what will be the last gathering of its kind, delegates, guests, and clergy of the Connecticut Conference gathered together on May 18 to worship, receive reports from the Board and staff, consider resolutions, and celebrate the Living Waters award. The keynote speaker, Bryan Nurnburger, founder and president of Simply Smiles Inc., gave a moving example of what churches can do when they do it together. He shared the story of how he founded the organization that works to better the lives of children in Mexico and on the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation in South Dakota. That story involved several UCC churches in Connecticut, (including Roxbury) where Bryan shared his story of traveling in Mexico, and coming home transformed by the children he met and worked with in an orphanage there The 2019 Living Waters Award was presented to Steve Lane, a member of First Church of Christ in Mansfield Center and co-founder of Quiet Corner Refugee Resettlement. More information about the meeting can be found at ctucc.org

Ongoing/Community Events Minister’s Community Office Hours On Wednesday mornings from 8:00-9:30 a.m. Reverend Peters has been holding office hours at the Roxbury Market. This is primarily a time for people to meet with him without having to come the church office. It is part of our local outreach. Community Office Hours will continue through June Men’s Breakfast June 8, 8:00 a.m. Fellowship Hall The Men’s Fellowship breakfast is held the second Saturday of each month at 8 a.m. in Fellowship Hall. All men of the Church are welcome to come for great hospitality, food, and lively, informal discussions and stories. Kitchen talk begins while the meal is being prepared around 7:30 a.m. The Men’s fellowship group has been the sponsoring organization for our annual Juried Art Show. See Charlie Meade with questions. Church Tag Sale Our 18th annual church tag/bake sale will take place on Saturday, August 10 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. You may rent a table for $25 or a space (bring your own table) for $20. The table/space money goes to the church, you keep your profits. If you don’t have enough “stuff” for your own table, consider donating it to the “church table (s)”. Also, please bake something for our bake table. Baked goods are always a big hit, and it adds to our total contribution to the church and our mission. Pies and cakes go quickly. Other items follow right along. You may reserve your table/space by calling Sue

Stauffacher at 860-354-1274. It is on a first-come basis, and your payment holds your place. She can take approximately 18 people. It must be limited so that if it rains, we have enough space inside to house everyone.

Fellowship Matters

Our annual Ladies Luncheon took place on May 5 at the White Horse Tavern in New Preston. A convivial turnout! Make plans to join us next year!

***** Oil Tank Replacement to begin The Board of Trustees have been working to replace the in the ground 1000-gallon oil tank just outside the Parish House. The project will begin soon. It will be replaced by two smaller above-ground tanks inside a shed next to the women’s restroom window near the rear of the building. You might have noticed the blue outline tape on the wall. The project has been approved by the Historic District Commission and will be of the same materials and design as the Parish House. The project is being funded by the Capital Reserve Fund which comes from bequests to the church.

What is planned giving?

Planned giving involves ways to support the church outside of normal pledging. Why is planned giving needed?

As with colleges, universities and other organizations, we can’t keep up with our expenses and mission on pledged giving alone. We need both. Now more than ever. How can I participate in planned giving?

One way is through your insurance policy by naming Roxbury Congregational Church as my beneficiary of my paid-up policy after my death.

How else can I participate in planned giving?

Through investment instruments which gain interest over my lifetime which is available for my use and upon my death, the principal goes to the church or through bequests in my will by percentage or stated amount. What can my participation in planned giving do?

It will ensure the future of Roxbury Congregational Church. Our current “endowment fund” is made up of the gifts of two women over the past twenty years. These gifts enable us to do things above and beyond the meeting of our daily expenses – such as getting the building and steeple painted. What should I do if I’m interested?

Speak with Rev. Peters, a member of the Stewardship Committee, your insurance agent or investment counselor
