New products for you. In this issue you will find information on DG 29™, an easy-to-use bovine blood pregnancy test that can be be conducted on cows or heifers

as early as 29 days post breeding. This is a great way to test your heifers or cows at a very early stage. The High-Density (HD) 50,000-plus (50K) marker,

offered from Pfizer Animal Genetics, is the future. The HD 50K generates predictions for 13 traits and a genomic-based economic selection index. Visit our website to see how the Genex bulls rank, especially the up-and-coming young sires. Contact your Genex sales representative or visit www.crinet.com to learn more about this testing.

Fawn Calf Syndrome (FCS), now called Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA), has finally been identified and is probably the last of the genetic defects that will be identified for a time. A commercial test will soon be available. The Genex bulls fared very well, all of the bulls in the 2010 Beef Genetic Management Guide tested negative. Only a few previously marketed bulls tested positive. Read more about the complete story within this issue.

As many of you prepare to either wean calves or breed fall cows it is time to step back and analyze the bulls that are starting to set themselves apart in the industry. The past couple of months have brought us new sire summaries, the gathering of Pfizer HD 50K DNA information on many young Angus bulls and another crop of calves being evaluated. All of this information, combined with a little cow sense, increases your chances of identifying the bulls that will rise to the top of their respective breed.

While sorting out tomorrow’s superstars isn’t an exact science, after being around the industry for awhile you start to recognize a few signs. These signs serve as excellent prediction tools for putting together a list of young bulls that stand a big chance at stardom. These bulls not only offer a set of data that is setting them apart, they are also the bulls serving a purpose to both commercial and registered breeders. It is obvious QAS Traveler 23-4, N Bar Emulation EXT and S A V Final Answer 0035 would never have been the foundation bulls they are today if it weren’t for their contribution to all segments of the industry.

I encourage all of you to make your own list of bulls that you predict to hit the next tier of popularity. While making your list, note the reasons why each bull will make a difference in the industry. When reviewing your

list recognize the true value a bull adds to the long term of the industry and that he isn’t popular just because of over promotion or he brought an astronomical price. Remember EXT only brought $2500 when he first sold. Here is the list I have compiled.

A bull that is doing a super job on heifers for commercial cattlemen is 1AN01148 Dakota Gold. He is a sleep-all-night calving ease bull that stamps progeny with guts and do-ability. For a bull

that is so consistent on offering extremely light birth weights, he sires progeny that will perform adequately. He not only sires calving ease and performance, it appears his daughters should be the long-lasting kind. His dam, a Final Answer daughter, is one of the great cows in the breed. I see this bull being a cornerstone calving ease sire.

1AN01170 Chisum has caught the attention of many cattlemen. He can be utilized as an outcross

bull to the industry, though has the proven lines of EXT, Traveler 6807 and Alliance. Not only are his EPDs one of the most elite sets in the breed, his HD 50K information verifies his EPDs should stay strong. His genomic data ranks in the top 10% for calving ease and top 1% on weaning. He injects muscle, rib shape and base width into his progeny, yet calves are born easy enough to use him on heifers. The daughters are productive females with added milk while still not losing their ability to flesh easy. Last but not least, the bull maintains a good set of feet and legs.

A young bull that has really started to make his mark in the industry is 1AN01146 right Answer. This obvious replacement for his sire, Final Answer, is very similar in siring capability. With a tremendous EPD spread from birth to yearling (-0.6 BW to 115 YW), Right Answer is an elite performance sire that can still

be used safely in heifers. This past spring, his sons were the top selling bulls in some of the most progressive programs in the U.S. He sires enough body to be functional though with a little extra frame than Final Answer.

1AN01160 Eagle Eye is catching the attention of astute cattlemen. His ability to sire progeny with muscle and an attractive look,

while maintaining the ability to perform well on grass, is setting this bull apart in the industry. He is being utilized by cattlemen who desire to stand first on the tanbark and by those who live in the harshest of regions for producing cows. His intriguing pedigree combined with a powerful full-bodied dam make him a unique sire. When a bull is this universal in acceptance, it is obvious he will make a mark in the breed.

1AN01184 Kodiak 9194 has the pedigree combined with the phenotype and EPDs to set him apart for popularity. His brothers drew lots of attention last winter when they won the National Western pen show. Even with the power and popularity of that pen, I felt this was the best of the HF Kodiak sons. The bull’s phenotypic power, extra rib and functionality made him special. I see him fitting in programs wanting to produce commercial bulls and registered herds for making the next great show heifer.

1AN01182 Brand Name is the son of the extremely popular S A V Bismarck 5682. While multiple Bismarck sons have commanded top prices over the past couple of years, I see Brand Name as the leadoff son. His cow family, flawless pedigree and performance-oriented phenotype

will make him a high impact sire. Confidence in a young bull is assured when he has been utilized extensively by the program that bred him, which is exactly the case with Brand Name. He was one of the heavily used sires in the Schaff Angus Valley program this past spring.

1AN01181 rito 9M25 has the potential to rise up to be one of the next great carcass sires of the breed. His incredible

EPD tabulation and unmatched genomic profile, along with the structural integrity and performance he possesses, easily makes him one of the elite young sires of the breed. Many would agree that his dam is the best cow to ever walk the pastures at Wehrmann Angus. She is beautiful

in her kind and productive with her progeny. Rito 9M25 was mated to more cows and heifers at Wehrmann Angus than any young bull in recent history.

1HP00829 Victor 719T is quickly becoming recognized in the commercial and registered

segments of the industry. His use on virgin heifers, without sacrificing pay weight, is an attribute unmatched by many other bulls in the breed. The tremendous rib expansion and real world look his progeny possess will make them adapt and thrive in most management situations. This bull will be a leader in siring commercial F1 replacement females as well as one of the most utilized sires in registered herds for making range bulls.

1HP00823 revolution has proven to sire progeny that have pushed his EPD tabulations to

be unmatched in the breed. His breed-leading birth to growth spread, with elite carcass figures, makes him one of the great sires. His high percentile ranking

©2010 CRI Beef HoRIzoNS

figures and ability to sire progeny with phenotype has put him on the roster of most registered programs around the globe. The industry recognizes his sire, Legend 242, as one of the all-time cornerstone sires of the breed – most would admit Revolution has taken his sire’s spot in the industry.

1SM00113 Tanker looks to have the ingredients to be the next great performance sire in the industry. He is a sire with moderation of mature size yet possesses the perfect growth curve to stand up to, and exceed,

larger framed sires for total weaning and yearling performance. As a 5.5 frame yearling bull he exceeded 1600 pounds at a year of age. His first calves indicate he should drop for birth weight EPD while maintaining this excellent growth potential.

1SM00115 Club King offers the industry many great attributes. His ability to sire progeny with width, bulging muscle and

unmatched performance has many cattlemen tuned-in to this sire. He is the ideal mating for the Dream On line of cattle; his ability to add growth and mass without sacrificing their softness and functionality makes him the perfect cross. All of this, combined with moderate birth weights and standout performance numbers, truly make him an elite sire.

1CH00958 Montezuma has been one of the most exciting Charolais bulls to hit the A.I. ranks in the past year. This Canadian-bred bull first caught the attention of many while on display at the 2010 Canadian Western Agribition. After being leased by Genex and purchased

by a group of U.S. breeders, he was taken to the National Western Stock Show where he was named national champion bull. While being competitive on the tanbark is not one of the attributes which make a high impact industry sire, he is siring progeny with his same great phenotype combined with breed-leading EPDs.

1Ar00917 Bank Statement is rancher tested and approved. His solid EPDs, performance-oriented phenotype and excellent structural integrity make him one of the

great up-and-coming sires in the industry. His dam is a deep-bodied individual with an efficient look and excellent disposition. All indications are he is siring

daughters with that same docile temperament and maternal excellence. When you tie all of these attributes together, you have a sire that has all of the stars lined up to be a breed changer.

1Ar00918 Full Throttle is a power-packed individual that has impressed breeders from around the globe. His massive phenotype allowed him to secure the champion bull honor at the 2010 World Angus Forum. He is passing this powerful look onto his progeny which are standouts for width and muscle. He is a safe

bet for siring performance that will compete with any Continental lines, though still have females that are functional and productive. Full Throttle’s unique pedigree, powerful type and maternal lineage are the keys for him to continue to gain popularity.

Show-Me the PregnanciesBeef producers in the U.S. have been reluctant

to adopt reproductive technologies on their farms or ranches due to time and labor constraints, or the perception that these technologies are too complicated or costly to implement. Acceptable pregnancy rates to “fixed-time A.I.” or breeding by appointment without detecting heat are possible in beef cows; however, results in beef heifers have been inconsistent. This is largely attributed to an inability to synchronize follicular waves in heifers with the same degree of success that is achievable in cows.

Estrus synchronization and artificial insemination (A.I.) contribute to a total heifer development program in several ways. Estrus synchronization improves time management for producers that use A.I. by concentrating the breeding and resulting calving periods. Managers are able to spend more time observing heifers as they calve because calving occurs over a shorter time period. In many cases calf losses are reduced because of improved management during the calving period. A.I. provides the opportunity to breed heifers to bulls selected for low birth weight or high calving ease EPDs with high accuracy. This minimizes the incidence and severity of calving difficulty and decreases calf loss from dystocia. In addition, heifers conceiving during a synchronized period typically wean older and heavier calves. Finally, heifer calves that result from A.I. can be an excellent source of future replacements facilitating more rapid improvement in the genetic makeup of an entire herd.

PROTOCOL FOR HEIFERSOver the past several years, research at the University of Missouri in collaboration with Genex has focused on the development of a long-term EAZI-BREED™ CIDR®-based protocol in beef heifers that may be used to facilitate fixed-time A.I. The 14-day CIDR-PG protocol, referred to as Show-Me-Synch in Missouri, is outlined in the following schematic and is the outcome of this research effort.

72

The protocol calls for the administration of a CIDR device for 14 days. Sixteen days after the CIDR is removed, all heifers receive an intramuscular injection of prostaglandin to bring them into heat. All heifers are then inseminated 66 hours after the injection of prostaglandin. Each heifer also receives an injection of GnRH at the time of insemination, which is used to induce ovulation.

Let’s take a moment to review considerations related to use of the 14-day CIDR-PG protocol. The protocol is simple to administer, but requires proper planning and time to implement prior to the breeding season. Use of this protocol cannot be a last minute decision.

8 ©2010 CRI Beef HoRIzoNS

Show-Me the PregnanciesThe CIDR, which contains progesterone, is used to synchronize estrous cycles of heifers that reached puberty and are estrous cycling, and may be used to induce estrus in heifers that have not yet reached puberty. In fact, increased progesterone is thought to be a prerequisite for the development of normal estrous cycles in cattle.

Finally, the 14-day presynchronization period using the CIDR is highly effective in setting the stage for resulting high fertility following the administration of prostaglandin 16 days after CIDR removal.

What are the advantages in using the 14-day CiDr-PG protocol?Long-term CIDR-based protocols enhance synchrony of estrus compared to short-term CIDR-based or MGA-based protocols.

Pregnancy rates resulting from fixed-time A.I. in beef heifers are expected to be higher following treatment with long-term CIDR-based protocols because of improvements in synchrony of estrus following treatment.

Long-term CIDR-based protocols provide the added benefit of combining health and reproduction into a single management step. Pre-breeding booster vaccinations may be administered at the time the CIDR is inserted, given the length of time required

to administer this protocol. This reduces animal handling and facilitates effective management of both health and reproductive management, which veterinarians support.

Results to date are consistent. The protocol works, as shown from data in the following table.

Pregnancy rates in beef heifers after fixed-time A.i. following administration of the 14-day

CiDr-PG (Show-Me-Synch) protocol.

Number pregnant/number inseminated

Pregnancy rate (%)

1729/2656 65%

Data has been collected on 2656 heifers in several states that were inseminated by appointment following administration of the 14-day CIDR-PG protocol. As seen from the table, the fixed-time A.I. pregnancy rate among these heifers was 65%. That means 65% (1729) of the 2656 heifers became pregnant on the first day of the breeding season with no heat detection involved.

For the first time, beef producers have the opportunity to combine an estrus synchronization protocol that facilitates fixed-time A.I. with herd health management. The 14-day CIDR-PG protocol opens the door to expanded use of fixed-time A.I. in beef heifers across the U.S.

What is DG29?DG29 is an easy-to-use bovine blood pregnancy test. Blood samples are drawn from cattle on the farm, forwarded to a certified laboratory (AgSource Laboratories in Menomonie, Wis.), and pregnancy diagnosis results are returned to the farm quickly and accurately.

When Can an Animal Be Tested? The DG29 test can be conducted on cows or heifers as early as 29 days post breeding. Cows must also be at least 90 days post calving before blood samples are collected. Performing the DG29 test on cows less than 90 days post calving may result in false positive test results; the pregnancy-related protein from the previous pregnancy may still be present. DG29 can also be used for pregnancy diagnosis of embryo transfer recipients if used on day 32 or later (embryo implanted at day 7 + 25 days = day 32).

How Accurate Are DG29 Test Results?Research published in the Canadian Veterinary Journal has proven DG29 to be over 99 percent accurate. For the most accurate results, follow the blood collection timeline indicated above.

How Is the DG29 Test Offered? The DG29 complete kit includes the required red-topped blood tubes, disposable needles, a needle holder and hazardous material shipping containers. The shipping of the kit to the farm and the test analysis are included in the price. The complete kit is available in quantities of 24, 48, 72 or 144 blood tubes/tests.

A second purchasing option includes only the required red-topped blood tubes and test analysis. This option is packaged in quantities of 48, 72, 144 or 288 tubes/tests and does not include the cost of shipping the blood tubes to the farm. Individual needles, needle holders and hazardous material shipping containers are sold separately.

All DG29 samples sent to the lab must be submitted in the CRI provided red-topped blood tubes. With both purchasing options, the member pays shipping charges to transport blood samples from the farm to the laboratory.

Test as early as 29 days post breeding for quick identification of open females!

Contractural Arachnodactyly (CA; formerly Fawn Calf Syndrome) is a genetic abnormality inherited as a simple recessive. In early 2009, a number of U.S. breeders provided samples of affected calves that, from pedigree information, also demonstrated recessive inheritance and implicated the same common ancestor. This was further established by using DNA from affected calves to map the gene responsible to a unique chromosomal position where all affected calves were homozygous for the same DNA segment.

In an effort to find the specific mutation that causes CA within this chromosome segment, numerous genes were selected for analysis based on their biological function and relationship to the pathology. DNA sequences were analyzed for more than 40 genes using DNA from known normal, known carrier and affected calves. In late summer of 2009, it was discovered that one of these genes had a large deleted DNA segment in CA-Affected calves. We have spent tremendous effort and resources to fully characterize this deletion so an accurate DNA test could be developed. The most difficult aspect was obtaining the complete and correct DNA sequence of this gene as well as sequences adjacent to the gene. Much of this sequence had to be generated de novo as both cattle genome assemblies are incomplete for this region of the genome. Furthermore, the DNA sequence is highly repetitive in content and contains a large, nearly identical duplicated segment of the gene causing CA. On June 8, 2010 the correct assembly of the DNA sequence was completed.

An assay was developed which accurately determined the genotype of individuals for CA. This assay has been used on a total of 3,336 animals as of July 23, 2010. As with previous genetic defects we have attempted to assess the allele frequency of this mutation in the Angus breed. The best population to accomplish this is a nearly random sampling of the breed; in this case a large number of A.I.

sires provided to us from members of the National Association of Animal Breeders. Although, this group of animals was not completely random it was sufficient for accurately estimating the allele frequency, while at the same time providing information on many animals that have significant influence on the total population. To date, we have screened 1,256 A.I. sires and identified 39 bulls that are CA-carriers. This corresponds to a heterozygote frequency of ~3.1% and an allele frequency of ~1.5%.

As we complete our work, we will begin the process of making the CA test com-mercially available. You can expect this test to be offered at a similar cost to the AM and NH tests.

Update on Contractural ArachnodactylyBy: Jonathan Beever, PhD, University of Illinois

Genex Return PolicyBy: Alfred Kuck, Vice President, Beef Programs

effective July 26, 2010, Genex has stopped marketing semen from Contractural Arachnodactyly carrier (CAC) bulls. If you have purchased semen on any of the CAC bulls within the past 24 months, Genex will issue a credit on your account for these units. Contact your local representative to initiate this process and for instructions on returning the semen. Genex will not replace semen that has already been used; those calves will be eligible for registry in most breed associations. only half of the offspring from these sires will be carriers and an affected calf will occur only one in four times when two carriers are mated. If any effort has been made to avoid inbreeding, we would not expect to have any affected calves on these sires.

CRI Hosts Annual Beef TourCooperative Resources International (CRI) hosted a beef tour for 40 international sales representatives and beef producers from Argentina and Brazil. The eight-day tour gave the visitors the opportunity to better understand the United States beef industry.

“Through the combination of educational programs and cattle ranch tours, our guests gained a whole new outlook on the beef cattle genetics available from CRI,” stated Michael Sleeper, CRI Associate Vice President of International Marketing.

The beef tour began June 12 and focused on many aspects of the beef industry while traveling throughout Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota. The tour included educational sessions regarding beef genetics and the services offered by CRI along with a tour of the cooperative’s custom collection facility - Genex Hawkeye West - located in Billings, Mont.

For many participants, the highlight of the tour was visits to local cattle ranches. The ranch tours allowed the international visitors to view progeny of CRI bulls and learn more about how U.S. ranches operate. The ranches visited during the tour included: Ludvigson Stock Farms, Joliet, Mont.; Sitz Angus Ranch, Harrison, Mont.; 21 Angus Ranch, New England, N.D.; Broken Heart Ranch, Firesteel, S.D.; Lindskov-Thiel Ranch, Isabel, S.D.; Missouri River Feeders, Center, N.D.; TNT Ranch, Almont, N.D.; Penrhos Farm, Britton, S.D.; Topp Herefords, Grace City, N.D.; Spickler Ranch, Glenfield, N.D.; Schaff Angus Valley, St. Anthony, N.D.; and Ellingson Angus, St. Anthony, N.D.

“The tour was a success. The guests reacted very positively to everything on the tour. What they saw truly exceeded their expectations. They were impressed and overwhelmed by the hospitality shown to them,” commented Sleeper.

He is a sleep-all-night calving ease bull that stamps progeny with guts and do ability. For a bull that is so consistent on offering extremely light birth weights, he sires progeny that will perform adequately.

He can be utilized as an outcross bull to the industry, though has the proven lines of EXT, Traveler 6807 and Alliance. The daughters are productive females with added milk while still not losing

A young bull that has really started to make his mark in the industry is 1AN01146 right Answer. This obvious replacement for his sire, Final Answer, is very similar in siring capability. With a tremendous EPD spread from birth to yearling (-0.6 BW to 115 YW), Right Answer is an elite performance sire that can still be used safely in heifers. This past spring, his sons were the top selling bulls in some of the most progressive programs in the U.S. He sires enough body to be functional though with a little extra frame than Final Answer.

GenChoice™ Semen Packaged in 1/4 cc Straws If you have used GenChoice™ sexed semen, you have noticed it is packaged in ¼ cc straws versus the traditional ½ cc straw size. Research conducted by Genex staff shows ¼ cc semen straws result in increased pregnancies compared to the standard ½ cc straw. The smaller straw size also allows for this semen to be packaged 10 straws in the bottom goblet compared to five on top and on the bottom with the ½ cc straw size. By holding all 10 straws on the bottom goblet, there is less chance of damaging semen while removing straws of semen from the tank as the whole cane is held lower in the tank’s neck tube where the temperature is much cooler.

It is important to recognize a universal artificial insemination (A.I.) gun or ¼ cc A.I. gun is needed when breeding females using GenChoice sexed semen. The advantage of using a universal A.I. gun versus ¼ cc straw gun, is adaptability for both ½ cc and ¼ cc straws. That way, even if you may have some semen packaged in ½ cc straws and some in ¼ cc straws you still only need one gun.

To purchase a universal or ¼ cc gun contact Genex Customer Service 888.333.1783 or purchase online from the Genex Profit Shop at http://profitshop.crinet.com.

To Properly Load Universal or 1/4 cc Guns [1] Pull the plunger of the gun back six to seven inches.

[2] Place the straw directly into the barrel of the gun with the plugged end in the gun and the crimped end sticking out.

[3] Give the straw a quarter turn to ensure it is properly seated in the gun.

[4] Use a clean scissors to cut through the air space below the crimped end of the straw. Keep in mind ½ cc and ¼ cc straws are cut differently. For ½ cc straws, cut at a slight angle. For ¼ cc straws, cut straight across.

[5] Secure the cut end of the straw into the insert of the sheath.a. For the All-2-Mate™ O-ring gun use the split sheath with the green insert.

b. For the All-2-Mate™ spiral gun and KombiColor use the non-split sheath with blue insert.

[6] To secure the straw into the sheath, place the sheath over the gun and straw. Pinch lightly above the insert and apply pressure until you feel the straw lock into place inside the guide cup. Seating the straw into the insert assures the semen cannot run back into the sheath during deposition.

[7] Finally, secure the sheath onto the gun.a. To secure the sheath onto the spiral gun, pull the sheath down over the barrel of the gun until the end of the sheath touches the spirals on the gun and the insert is near the end of the sheath (Figure 1). Screw the sheath onto the spirals at the base of the gun until you meet resistance (Figure 2). The end of the insert should now be into the tip of the sheath (Figure 3).

b. To secure the sheath onto the O-ring gun, slide the sheath down the barrel of the gun and push the O-ring up (Figure 4). CRI Hosts Beef Tour for International Visitors

Fifty visitors from Argentina and Brazil participated in the 2009 CRI Beef Tour.

Cooperative Resources International (CRI) hosted a beef tour for 50 international sales representatives and beef producers from Brazil and Argentina. The 12 day, five state tour gave the visitors the opportunity to better understand the United States beef industry.

Michael Sleeper, CRI Associate Vice President of International Marketing, commented on the overall purpose of the beef tour. “It gave them a whole new outlook on the beef cattle genetics available from CRI and using bulls from outside of their own countries,” stated Sleeper. “We really set a strong basis for a sales relationship with these countries.”

The tour included ranch and business visits as well as educational sessions regarding beef genetics and the services offered by CRI. Specific points of interest on the tour included numerous beef ranches, the American Angus Hall of Fame, the Dickinson Research Extension Center and two of the cooperative’s custom collection facilities - Genex Dakota Sire Service and Genex Hawkeye West - to see bulls currently in stud. The tours allowed the visitors to view progeny of CRI bulls and learn more about the different ways ranches operate.
