Kayak For Sabercats Resulting in B. Snaly

Maranatha students Jon Gress and Jacob Boucher joined friend Garrett Feik to kayak the 320-mile Rock River from Horicon Marsh, WI, to Quad Cities, IL, to raise money for a Sabercat mascot costume.

Originally, the men planned to complete their task in 17 days, but were able to finish in 15, setting the record for the first group to have ever kayaked the entire river in consecutive days. The story garnered press from numerous local newspapers and TV stations and helped raise over $1,500 toward the Sabercat costume.

As a result of the money earned during Kayak for Sabercats as well as other donations Maranatha was proud to introduce “B. Snarly” on Friday, October 3, during a competitive volleyball game against Northland International University. On that night, an enthusiastic crowd celebrated the newest member of the athletics family, B. Snarly. The official mascot of the Sabercats was formally introduced with the Maranatha lineups prior to the game and took to the crowd, high-fiving the Crazies and taking “selfies” throughout the match. Thank you to all of those who donated and had a part in bringing B. Snarly into the Maranatha family.

Introducing the Maranatha SabercatsAbout the Sabercat

What we know about the Saber-toothed cat has been determined from the fossil record. Hundreds of thousands of Sabercat bones have been excavated from the La Brea Tar Pits in California and fossil beds have been discovered throughout North and South America as well as in Europe.

Since 1901, scientists have studied the bones and learned much about the Saber-toothed cat. Smilidon fatalis literally means “deadly knife tooth.” Fearsome and ferocious, Saber-toothed cats were bear-like in stature, with powerful limbs, large neck muscles, and up to nine-inch canines. A hunter of mammoths and other large beasts, the Saber-toothed cat was among the “most impressive carnivores ever to have lived.” Similar to lions, they would work together to preserve and protect the pack.

The Bible says in Genesis 1:24 that land animals like the Saber-toothed cat were created on the sixth day. And according to Genesis 6:19-21, we know every cat “kind” boarded the Ark. Creation scientists at Answers in Genesis suggest the Saber-toothed cat “probably migrated to America via land bridges around the early part of the Ice Age (approx. 2,200 BC) and became extinct by the end of the Ice Age (approx. 1,600 BC).”

We consider our MBU Sabercats fierce opponents and courageous athletes. But the Sabercats also embody cooperation, teamwork, and strong family ties—all characteristics inherent in the MBU brand.

Akins added to the Maranatha Hall of FameCoach Akins’ accomplishments at Maranatha are very diverse and

always sprinkled with humor. As a student in the early years at Maranatha, Rich was a class officer and participated in Fine Arts events. He played on the football team from 1972 – 1975. During his junior and senior years, the team won two championships. Coach Akins taught at Maranatha Baptist Academy for fifteen years, served as the school administra-tor for six years and was head football coach for thirty years. During his time as head football coach, his teams tied or won 10 Indian Trails Conference championships. Dr. Akins impacted the lives of many collegiate ath-letes during his six years as Maranatha’s athletics director. His involvement in Fine Arts events and as a public speaker span the whole time he served at Maranatha. Though Coach would crack a joke or down play the impact he has had on a countless number of lives, those individuals bear testimony to the impact he has had. He continues to serve

the Lord as the pastor of Calvary Baptist Church in Jefferson.

Coach Akins was honored on August 29, 2014 with induction into the Ma-ranatha Athletics Hall of Fame. His plaque reads: “In recognition of his accom-plishments on the football field as a Maranatha Crusader (1972-1975) and off the field as a Christian educator, coach, athletic director, and pastor; and for his dedication to our Maranatha Crusader and Sabercat athletes and athletic com-petition. As an intercollegiate athlete in the formative years of athletics at Maranatha, Dr. Akins exemplified the spirit, enthusiasm, and work ethic that Maranatha Baptist University desires to instill in all its athletes.  As a coach, athletic director and teacher in Christian education, Dr. Akins has influenced the lives of count-less young people, instilling these same qualities in others as he continues to minister in the local church for the cause of Jesus Christ. Dr. Akins’ legacy and testimony, both on and off the field of competition, shall ever remain as a testament to the Lord Jesus Christ and to Maranatha Baptist University Athletics.”

2013 Football Review The Sabercats picked up a big win against Martin Luther College at the beginning of the season under then-head coach Andy Peterson, scoring with just over a minute remaining in the game for a 56-54 thriller. Maranatha held a sizable 50-34 lead early in the quarter, but Martin Luther scored on their next three drives, nearly pulling off a big comeback before Sabercats quarterback Brandon McCormick threw a 57-yard TD to receiver Jordan DeLay on 3rd and eight to win the game with 1:06 left on the clock.  Maranatha’s offense racked up 580 yards of offense that day, and the McCormick to DeLay connection was a constant throughout the season with the quarterback throwing for 1,972 yards and 15 touchdowns, while targeting DeLay for 57 passes for 778 yards and eight touchdowns. The team enjoyed contributions from freshman running back Clint Saxon, who rushed for 597 yards on 144 carries for a 3.7 yard average, and receivers Joel Kobosh and Joe Manion posted 469 and 329 yards respectively.  The defense was led by linebacker Ethan Kennon, who was awarded the NCAA DIII as the National Statistical Champion for his 15.8 tackles per game average. Kennon compiled 158 total tackles, also the most in DIII, and had three pass breakups, one interception and 12.5 tackles for loss.  Kennon was joined on defense by lineman Jordan Dersch, who recorded 75 tackles and four sacks while defensive back Clayton Morrison led the team with five interceptions and five pass breakups. Individual honors went to four players selected to the All-NCCAA Second Team and Honorable Mention, beginning with Kennon who made the 2nd Team while offensive lineman Gabe Kluver joining him on the 2nd Team. DeLay and Dersch were both named Honorable Mention.

Head Coach Nate Spate Spate graduated from Maranatha with bachelor degrees in both History and Physical Education, and received his Master of Science in Sport Coaching in 2003 from the United States Sports Academy.  Spate took his first position in 1995 as head coach of the Juvignac Felins, a Division II semi-professional team located in Juvignac, France, after learning of the team through a football missions trip led by former head coach Terry Price.  In his first year, Spate led Juvignac to a semifinals appearance. He returned to Maranatha to complete his undergraduate work, then returned to Juvignac in 1997 to lead the Felins to a District Championship. He graduated the following year and married his college sweetheart Tara Snider.  The former UMAC All-Conference Team selection enters his twentieth season of coaching, with two state championships at Trinity Christian Academy (Jacksonville, FL) and twelve playoff appearances at six different high schools, including six at Trinity and three at Eagle’s View Academy (Jacksonville, FL).  He set eight offensive school records at Eagle’s View and six while at Canyon Creek Christian Academy (Richardson, TX). Spate preaches “systems that build programs, teams that win championships, and players that play to compete.”

MEn’s soCCERCoach Jeff Pill

Coach Jeff Pill enters his seventh season at Maranatha as Soccer Coordinator and Men’s Soccer Coach, after leading his team to an NCCAA 2013 Midwest Region Semifinal appearance against Northland International University.  In the 2008 season, Coach Pill’s leadership contributed to the first NCCAA Men’s Soccer Midwest Regional Championship since 1990, guiding the team to a fifth-place finish in the National Tournament as well. Pill was named the NCCAAII Midwest Region Coach of the Year in 2008 and led his teams to Top-10 finishes in the NCCAAII for five years in a row.  Before Coach Pill’s arrival at Maranatha, he served as Women’s National Staff Coach for U.S. Soccer and assistant coach for the U19 National Team with an international record of 11-0-1. Since 1994, Coach Pill has been part of the National Instructional Staff, contributing to the training of the 1996 U.S. Women’s National

Team Olympic team and helping to coordinate the Under-14 Girls National Team program.  Coach Pill holds a USSF “A” License, a NSCAA Advanced National Diploma, and a National Youth License for coaching. Pill was invited to the 2012 Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs as part of a committee reviewing curriculum for coaching instruction at the highest level of the national coaching program. Coach Jeff Pill’s achievements include five New Hampshire Coach of the Year awards, Sportsman of the Year, New Hampshire Senior All-Star Coach, and the President’s Award from the New Hampshire Soccer Association. Coach Pill spent time on the New Hampshire Senior All-Star Selection Committee, serving as Vice President for the New Hampshire Coaches Association, working as a technical reporter for FIFA during the 1994 and 1999 World Cup games, and serving as Director of Coaching for New Hampshire.  Aside from soccer, Coach Pill is a husband and father of three who models a God-honoring life for his family and team. His goals are to equip his players to excel on the field as well as in life as followers of Christ.

Tonal Defenders Ministry TeamThe Tonal Defenders Ministry Team is made up of members from the men’s soccer team. Throughout the year, the men conduct soccer clinics in the area and minister in local churches through singing, playing instrumental music, teaching, and preaching. Their desire for ministry is two-fold: to connect with communities by using soccer as an outreach tool and to encourage local churches through music and preaching.

The group started when the idea was proposed to develop the team’s tradition of singing before each game into a full-blown ministry. With the assistance of Jim Harrison, Vice President of Institutional Advancement, they schedule churches to visit during the course of the year. In addition to their ministry in churches, the Tonal Defenders put on soccer clinics in Watertown on different Saturdays throughout the year. Several of the players also put on clinics for the local teams of the Watertown Soccer Club on a continuing basis.

2013 Men’s Soccer Season ReviewAD3I Head Coach of the Year Jeff Pill, and his squad took a big step forward in the 2013 season, meshing well and continuing their process-oriented system and narrowly missing the NCCAA DII Midwest Region Championship game after advancing to the Regional Semi-Final against Northland International.  The Sabercats defeated Kuyper College 4-1 to advance to the semi-final, and held a 1-0 lead for most of the match, until the Pioneers finally broke through a sturdy Maranatha defense for a goal at the 80th minute. The game weaved its way through double overtime and ended in a shootout thriller in favor of the host team, but served notice that the men’s soccer team was on the rise, finishing with a 9-7 regular season record.  Throughout the season, Maranatha had several impressive wins, including against NCAA DIII opponents Wisconsin Lutheran (3-1), Ripon (3-2) and Beloit College (3-0). Several catalysts for the team received conference recognition, including midfielder Wira Wama (Papua New Guinea) who led the team in goals (12), and points (29), and was selected as the Association of Division III Independents (AD3I) Offensive Player of the Year and NCCAA DII Second-Team All-American.  Wama made the AD3I All-Independents First Team. 2013 Women’s Soccer Season Review A fifth place finish in the NCCAA DII National Tournament narrowly eluded the 2013 women’s soccer team with a 2-1 shootout loss at the hands of the #5-ranked Ohio Christian TrailBlazers, in Kissimmee, Florida.  The Sabercats and TrailBlazers met earlier in the regular season in a double-overtime match that Maranatha won 3-2. But the Nationals rematch featured an Ohio squad determined to equal the score, and after a 1-0 lead by Maranatha, a late goal by Ohio Christian forced a shootout. A series of thrilling, back and forth scoring ensued, but the TrailBlazers rallied from 2-1, to win 5-4 on penalty kicks.

Maranatha’s season started with a promising 2-1 start and the Sabercats were powered by freshman forward Natascha Vinz (Sheboygan, MI). Vinz amassed six goals those three games and ended the year as the leading goal scorer, with 17 goals and six assists. Vinz was later named an NCCAA DII 2nd Team All-American and 2nd Team AD3I All-Independents Team selection. Midfielders Harmony Lorch (Aurora, CO) and Courtney Dunn (Oshkosh, WI) were both selected to the AD3I All-Independents First Team. Lorch was also a 1st team NCCAA All-American while Dunn was a 2nd Team NCCAA All-American. Lorch was the second leading scorer on the team with 18 points (7 goals, 4 assists) and Dunn was third with 11 points (3 goals, 5 assists). Goalkeeper Michala Marino (Grand Blanc, MI) also got in on the mix with an AD3I All-Independents Second Team selection after finishing with a 1.88 goals against average and six shutouts.  Maranatha had a field day against NCCAA opponents during the regular season, recording a flawless 7-0 mark and out-scoring teams by a whopping 44-3 margin and posting five shutouts.  The team’s largest margin of victory came in a lopsided 16-0 win over Lincoln Christian in which the team had three players with at least two goals.

Maranatha concluded the season by winning three out of their last four games, including wins over Rockford University (NCAA DIII), Beloit College (NCAA DIII) and Grace Bible College.

Getting Involved in the Community The Sabercat Athletic teams are always finding something to do to help out the Watertown Community. Both the football team and the volleyball team work to keep a stretch of Wisconsin highway clean as part of the Adopt-A-Highway program. The SAAC, Student Athlete Advisory Committee, collects cans from the Maranatha student body each fall that are donated to the Watertown Food Pantry. Most of the teams are also involved with the YMCA, hosting clinics for the area youth. Giving back to the Watertown community is part of being a Sabercat.

2013 Volleyball Season ReviewThe Sabercats customary march into the championship round of the NCCAA DII National Tournament fell shy last season, but the team posted a 2-2 record in the tournament and finished the season 24-11 overall. Coming off a 2012 Championship Game appearance against Clearwater Christian, #6 Maranatha suffered losses against #3 Lincoln Christian and #2 Clearwater Christian College to open the 2013 tournament, but concluded with a pair of 3-0 sweeps over #7 Arlington Baptist College and #10 West Coast Baptist College. Maranatha faced Lincoln, its biggest threat in the Midwest Region, three times, including a regular season matchup the Sabercats claimed, and a regional and

national tournament matchup. The Red Lions were handed a 3-0 loss during the regular season, in what ended up concluding Maranatha’s second, six-game winning streak.  The first was a 6-0 start to the season, capped by an impressive 3-2 win over a tough NCAA Division III opponent, Concordia Wisconsin.  Maranatha also took to task a Dominican University squad that made the NCAA DIII Regional Tournament, forcing scores of 20-25, 25-27 and 19-25 in a tight 3-0 loss on September 20, and swept NAIA opponent, Indiana University Northwest, twice. The team’s third and final win streak, eight games, took them through the end of the regular season and concluded with a 3-0 victory over Moody Bible Institute to open NCCAA Midwest Region Play. The Red Lions evened the score though in the rematch, winning 3-1, and again at nationals. Individually, middle blocker Laci Peterson (Chillicothe, IL) was named AD3I Player of the Year, and All-Independents 1st Team, while being selected as an NCCAA/AVCA DII 1st Team All-American after ranking 6th in the NCAA DIII in kills per set (4.56).  Maranatha had four more selections to the AD3I All-Independents Teams; libero Sam Swiatek (Walled Lake, MI), and Lauren Schulz (Lake Mills, WI) to the Second Team, and setters Pam Borchardt (Watertown, WI) and Emily Thompson as Honorable Mention. Schulz also made the NCCAA All-American 2nd Team.As a team, Maranatha earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, honoring institutions that earn at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA out of a 4.0 scale while having six players on the NCCAA Scholar-Athlete list.
