Maranatha Sports CampsDirected by Maranatha’s head coaches, staffed by guest coaches as well as former and current Crusader athletes. Maranatha camps provide a well-balanced program which includes the following: spiritual training, challenge and encouragement, experienced coaches, individual and group instruction, state-of-the-art teaching techniques, quality facilities, and exciting leisure activities.

On campus, with their team or on their own, many Maranatha athletes are involved with camp work during the summer. Individual and Team Camp on the campus of Maranatha is the largest summer ministry for the volleyball team. These camps require over 30 staff members who meet the needs of over 200 campers. Many staff members are former players who enjoy the summer camp ministry. All the Maranatha sport camps train young athletes in their sport and leadership abilities, all focused on the Bible. Some Crusaders are also involved in other ministries. Melissa Kaminski, a 2013 women’s soccer graduate, spent two weeks this summer at her church’s camp. Melissa shared how she prayed all week for one of the juniors in her cabin and was able to see her accept Christ by the end of the week. Camp allows the athletes to have one on one opportunities to reach into the lives of young people and make a difference. However, the biggest changes are often in the lives of the athletes themselves.

Coach Gary GarrisonGary Garrison is entering his sixth year as the head baseball coach for Maranatha. He is looking forward to playing at the US Cellular field again this year and claiming a victory against Illinoise Institute of Technology. Being able to play in such a venue with great support from family, friends and alumni makes a great ending for the season. Before becoming the head coach in 2009, Coach Garrison served for four years as the assistant coach working with the catchers and as the hitting coach. Prior to coming to Maranatha in 2004, Coach Garrison coached baseball for 21 years at the high school level and at Pillsbury Baptist Bible College for 2 years.

Coach Garrison earned his bachelor’s degree in physical education at Olivet Nazarene University, and a master’s degree in physical education at the University of West Florida. Garrison also serves as a professor in the Physical Education Department at Maranatha Baptist University.

2014 Baseball Preview The 2014 Maranatha baseball team will showcase a variety of new faces and leaders this year, with a large number of younger players coming in having a wealth of previous experience. “This will definitely be a team that comes into the season already knowledgeable and experienced in the game,” remarks head coach Gary Garrison. “In the past ten years that I’ve been at Maranatha, this is probably the largest group of experienced players that I’ve been able to work with.” These new players tally a total of eight freshmen, all of which enter with quality high school and club experience. “Most of our new guys have played at very competitive, pre-college levels,” states Garrison. “As we interact more, I am ecstatic to hear that a lot of our freshmen have played long seasons under good coaching with mass amounts of practice time.”

With only a few upperclassman and several sopohomores, the team will be predominately freshman. Bright freshmen prospects include Micah Burdett, Greg Scheiderer, and Caleb Prigge. Burdett will compete for the top pitcher spot, and possesses a strong arm that produces a quality fastball with good velocity. “Burdett really pitches with intelligence. He also can provide quality defense for us in the outfield,” says Garrison. Scheiderer also comes in with good experience and will be an immediate contributor to the pitching staff. As well, Prigge gives the Crusaders additional quality pitching and high-level infield skills. Key returners for this year’s team include veterans Galen Balinski, Cody Borland, and Tim Rogers. Balinski offers a

good glove at second base, and will provide good range for the Crusader defense. Borland has become a very efficient center fielder, and also can pitch in the rotation. “Cody gets a great jump on the ball from center field,” remarks Coach Garrison. “He plays some really good defense and has great range.” Tim Rogers will be a natural, quiet leader for the Crusaders this year, and plays with quick hands at shortstop. This year’s squad will possess a renewed confidence as they look to be more competitive in each of their eighteen games on the schedule. Coach Garrison feels that the team will match up nicely to their opponents. The Crusaders will lace it up against only six NACC schools throughout the course of this season, while the other fourteen games range from Chicago, IL, to Knoxville, TN. Key match-ups for the rest of the season include hosting NCCAA Midwest Regional foe Lincoln Christian University as well as a trip toUS Cellular Field in Chicago, IL, to take on the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks. Overall, Coach Garrison is excited about the youthful energy and high level of confidence his young players possess. The roster looks to produce a high-quality offensive team that will look to the strength of its pitching on the defensive side of the field. “As we grow closer together as a team throughout the season, I hope that we can learn not only how to become a little better at baseball, but that we can also grow closer to the Lord and encourage each other to do our best in everything that we do,” says Garrison.

Featured AthletesGalen Balinski This senior infielder possessed quick hands and good range at second base last season and will be a likely candidate to start at the same position. Balinski also pitched 24 innings, third on the team, and walked the least amount of batters (7) of any pitcher with at least 20 innings.

TImothy Rogers This sophomore shortstop was third on the team in batting average (.265) last season and started every game he played in. Rogers’ range, quick hands, and intelligence at the shortstop position make him one of the team’s most talented players.

Cody BorlandThis sophomore is the team’s starting center fielder and frequented the mound 20 innings for the Crusaders last season. Borland quickly developed a reputation for his stellar defense in the field, recording just one error all of last season. He is an efficient outfielder with good range and gets a good jump on the ball.

Micah BurdettThis is a freshman with a strong arm, good veloc-ity, a superior fastball, and pitches with intelli-gence. Burdett enters with quality high school experience and will contend for one of the team’s top starting spots in the rotation.

CRUSADER HIGHLIGHTS2014 Baseball Spring TripEscaping the cold, damp air of March in Wisconsin, the Crusaders will begin their season with a week-long spring trip that will begin in Lincoln, IL, and end up in Monroe, TN. This will be the twelfth consecutive year that the team has been able to head south over spring break, and the trip is always looked back upon as a major highlight of the season. “The spring trip at the start of the year is always a lot of fun,” states Coach Garrison. “We get to play a lot of baseball, develop unity as a team, and even take some time to see the Louisville Slugger Museum in Louisville, KY.” Sophomore shortstop Tim Rogers agrees, “the spring trip is always a great way to kickstart the season. With all the long hours spent traveling and playing, you really have time to bond as a team and become one big family.” These long hours will include a total of five doubleheader games in the stretch of just seven days. “There are a lot of games in a short period of time,” states Rogers. “It really forces the team to come together quickly and learn how to play together.” From a coach’s perspective, motivation for putting on this trip each year is twofold. “The spring trip allows us to fit a large amount of games into our schedule at the beginning of the year that wouldn’t be possible in the wet conditions of Wisconsin,” remarks six year head coach Gary Garrison. “Also, being together for a week straight on a long trip has proven to never produce a dull moment in the process of establishing team unity and cohesion,” he added with a smile. By embarking on a trip over the last week of March, the men’s baseball team is able to gain some quality experience in the field that will translate into better preparation for regular season play. This spring trip does not increase the length of the team’s schedule, but rather gives them a chance to gain quality reps earlier in the season. Webster defines ‘team’ as, “a group of people who work together.” Spending time together is a crucial element to building team unity and boosting team morale in anticipation of a rewarding season. “As we hang out and play together during the spring trip, we are able to see areas in both our personal game and team game that we can commit to working on right as the season gets going,” says Rogers. “After being together for a week and playing approximately ten games, the stage will be set for a fun and successful season.”

Coach Rob ThompsonCoach Rob Thompson will enter his eighth year as the head women’s softball coach at Maranatha. Coach Thompson has played or coached the games of softball or baseball for over 40 years. In addition to his softball responsibilities, Coach Thompson serves as the athletic director for Maranatha Baptist University and Maranatha Baptist Academy. Before taking the athletic director position in 2006, Coach Thompson served as the director of sports information and the athletic events manager for four years. Coach Thompson graduated from Maranatha in 1984 with a bachelor’s degree in Theology/Bible with a minor in physical education. While at Maranatha, Coach Thompson lettered in baseball all four years and was twice named

all-conference. Prior to coming back to Maranatha, Coach Thompson served in pastoral, coaching, and teaching capacities in Marshalltown, Iowa and Rockford, Ill.

2014 Softball PreviewThe 2014 Maranatha women’s softball roster is filled with athleticism and the opportunity for success. “We have a lot of very young, athletic players this year,” remarks head coach Rob Thompson. “Although there are a lot of unknowns entering the season, I am excited about the girls’ work ethic, as well as the leadership already demonstrated by our returners.” These key returners include the only two upper classmen for this year’s Crusader squad, Rosa Lewis and Emily Thompson. Lewis, a four-year player who has started each of her past three seasons, will continue her role as a utility infielder, while also taking on some pitching responsibilities. “Rosa will be a key player for us this year,” states Thompson. “She will probably bat fourth in the line-up in order to utilize her hitting power. Her leadership both on and off the field will be very important for our young team.” Thompson will return as a starter and the anchor of the outfield for this year’s team. “Emily will be our centerfielder this year as well as our lead-off hitter. Her ability to bunt, get on base, and then steal bases will really help jumpstart our offense,” says Coach Thompson. Returning along with these upperclassmen are sophomores Samantha Swiatek, Emily Boogher, and Amy Dineen. Swiatek will be the primary catcher, and will also get her chance at pitching throughout the season. Boogher will positively impact the Crusaders with her defensive skill at shortstop and powerful hitting. Dineen will return as the starting first basemen. The eight remaining spots on this year’s roster are all made up of freshmen and sophomores who come in as first year college softball players. These eight players include Grace VanDeLinde, Bridgett Taylor, Kelli Fox, Heather White, Emily Hinsenkamp, Randi Jaqua, Megan Leaf, and Miranda Berry, all of whom snagged

positive recognition in the early parts of pre-season. VanDeLinde, Fox, and White show a lot of promise in the batting cage, while Taylor looks to bring a solid glove to the infield. Fox, White, and Hinsenkamp are good athletes in other Maranatha sports, and are learning to use their athleticism to help the Crusader softball team this season. The schedule for this year’s team promises to be one of the best travel schedules for the Crusaders in a long time. “So far we have seven doubleheaders at home and four doubleheaders in Milwaukee. “We’re thankful we don’t have to travel as far this season to play in games where it appears that we can really compete with our opponents,” states Thompson. Since last season took the team to the surrounding areas of Chicago for more than half of their games, the 2014 Crusaders are looking forward to twenty-seven regular season games that will take place primarily in the southeastern region of WI. This year’s goals are built upon the same principles that Coach Thompson seeks to integrate into every season that he dons a Crusader cap. “First and foremost I want our ladies to grow in their relationships with the Lord,” says

Thompson. “This includes working hard at attaining academic success, as well as looking for opportunities for ministry throughout the softball season. Finally, we want to work to become better softball players. Whether we win or lose, our play and testimony needs to honor the Lord both on and off the field. Yes, we want to be very competitive and put ourselves into positions where we can win, but that always comes after our primary goal of seeking to honor and glorify the Lord in everything we do.”

2014 Softball Spring TripThe beginning of the spring softball season here at Maranatha Baptist University can prove challenging, from finding a field dry enough to practice on to facing opponents who have more experience under their belts. One way that Coach Thompson has sought to amend this dilemma is by scheduling a spring tournament hosted by North Central University in the Plymouth Creek Dome. This provides a guaranteed opportunity for the girls to play a few games without concern for the weather. Junior Emily Thompson said of the weekend tournament, “I like it especially at the beginning of the season because it allows us to get back into the swing of things, and improve on

the game without having to worry about outside factors like wind, rain, snow, etc. These games won’t be rescheduled.” This weekend trip also provides a transition time for the team as they have spent many weeks practicing in a gym-setting. “It’s nice because it allows an in between step so we don’t have to go straight from practicing in a gym to playing a game outside,” remarks Emily. Turf is more realistic than a gym floor and the dome allows the players to make gradual adjustments instead of having to deal with the real field and elements all at the same time. Confidence is gained and the team is better prepared for the regular season to begin.

Feature AthletesRosa LewisThe senior shortstop finished with eight hits, two RBI’s, and two stolen bases last year, while starting in nearly every game. The lone senior and four-year player will be picking up some pitching responsibilities. She will be a key player both offensively and defensively.

Emily ThompsonThis junior will be the anchor of the outfield, playing centerfield for the Maranatha defense. Thompson finished second in batting average for the 2013 season (.329), and her high on-base percentage (.414) has earned her the lead-off spot in the batting rotation.

Samantha SwiatekThis sophomore catcher finished with 10 hits and 6 RBI’s last season and will be relied upon as a leader and occasional pitcher for the Maranatha team. Swiatek was fourth on last year’s team for on-base percentage (.311), and she will utilize her knowledge of the game to be a leader on both sides of the field.

Emily BoogherThis sophomore looks to be one of the top impact players for a young Crusader team, coming off a 21 hit, 8 RBI season in 2013. Boogher started in all 30 games and will be the leader of the infield at 2B/SS.
