Fall 2015
Welcome to another year of ASURA activities and fellowship. The weather is beginning to cool and the days are getting shorter. School is back in session and, once more, ASU is right near the top as one of America’s largest universities and, is now ranked as a top research university. We can be proud to see it recognized as a great educational institution.
Our ASURA year got off to a wonderful start with 80 peo-
ple signed up for Meet & Greet on September 9. Our various committees are already busy working on activities of interest and importance to our members. As I write this, a group of ASURA retirees are touring Italy. The Travel Committee is planning a 2016 trip to Cuba. Closer to home, trips are in the works to the Dolly Steamboat on Canyon Lake, as well as a tour of a Phoenix landmark, the Tovrea Castle. The Luncheons and Special Events Committee is also planning events such as the Christmas Party in December.
Our Government Liaison has already begun working with
legislators and we are in the early stages of planning seminars on various issues of interest to ASU retirees, such as proposed changes in the retirement plan. Pre-retirement seminars are being organized for prospective members who are planning their retirement.
The ASURA Board is also tackling the seemingly perenni-
al problems of declining membership and increasing expenses. The 2015-2016 budget has been put together by the Finance Committee for approval by the Board. It shows that while we could do more if we had more money, ASURA is still quite solvent.
All of us on the ASURA Board are looking forward to a
year filled with interesting and informative activities. We wel-come all suggestions from you for activities and programs you would find interesting and useful. Please feel free to contact me with all of your suggestions at [email protected].

This is the start of the 2015-2016 interview season. The first interview, in early September, was
of Harry Lundgren, Professor Emeritus of Engineering. He came to ASU in 1961 and made use of
ASU’s earliest computers for structural engineering course work. Remember programming with a
box of punch cards? Don’t drop the box!!
Our goal is to make all 113 recorded interviews available by streaming from the ASU Library
Digital Repository to your home computers . To upload and provide associated “metadata” (you’ve
heard this term with Wiki-Leaks) to the Library, may, depending on the help we can recruit, take
several years. Some of the work can be done from a volunteer’s home computer with not a great
deal of computer savvy and complication. Interested? Write: [email protected]. We will train.
A continuing reminder: Linda Van Scoy continues to develop YouTube clips for the ASURA website. There are
short clip highlights from the longer interviews. Go to https://asura.asu.edu/VideoHistoryInterviews. Here you will find
a complete list of the 113 interviews to date. At the end of a person’s name, if you see the words “(video clip)” under-
lined and in red, you can put your curser on this red underlined phrase and left click with your mouse. The video clip
will start to play.
We are pleased to welcome a new volunteer to the ASURA office staff. Effective September 16, Tara Roesler will be joining us staffing the Wednesday afternoon shifts (1-4p.m.) on all but the second Wednesday. Bev Buddee will con-tinue the second Wednesday afternoon each month. Tara was with ASU for 13 years and you may remember her as Tara Fuchs, working in the Comptroller’s Office and the Budget Office, followed by 21 years at the State level, retiring in 2005. Welcome Tara. And while we add new members we say thank you to two volunteers who will not be continuing as office volunteers: Mary Williams served from 2011 to 2014 and Anna Marie Shivers from 2008-2014. We appreci-ate their many years of service.
Office hours are Monday through Thursday, 9-noon and 1-4. We have decided to continue with closing the office
on Fridays so if you need to reach us or stop by, it is best to call first, (480) 965-7668, to make sure someone is there. We are still short one volunteer for the Thursday afternoon shift. So please let Linda or Nancy know if you would like to try that out.
If you attended the Meet and Greet in September you may have noticed there were fewer tables and chairs in CSB
330. The room has been reconfigured with a cap on the number of seats allowed for the size of this classroom. So if
any board members or committee chairs plan to use the room for events and meetings, keep in mind that there is seating
for only 48 now.
The office now has a supply of colored markers for white boards in the conference rooms. Please pick them up in the
office and return them after use.

Are your bookshelves too full? Are you downsizing your office or your home and don't have space for all of your books?
Donate your used books to us, and we will work with our partner, Friends of the Phoenix Public Library, to sell them. We'll use proceeds of the sale to support our programs. The ASU Foundation, a separate nonprofit organization that ex-ists to support ASU, will provide you with a gift receipt for tax purposes.
Half of the proceeds will be invested in our endowed scholarship fund, and half will be used for our Video History project. Earnings from the endowed scholarship fund are earmarked for our ASURA Scholarship.
If you have books you can donate, please visit our web site at https://asura.asu.edu/BookDrive and print our donation form. Complete the form and either scan and fax or email to Mary Stevens, chair of the Book Drive project or mail it directly to the ASURA office.

ASURA has selected Kazuko Nimi, a chemical engineering student, as its scholarship recipient for the 2015-16 aca-
demic year. Ms. Nimi has a superb academic record transferring from Scottsdale Community College and presented
enthusiastic recommendations from faculty at that college.
Ms. Nimi expressed her thanks and appreciation to ASURA for her award: “Words cannot ex-
press how much I appreciate, and it makes me feel proud to have been selected for this scholar-
ship. Thank you again for your generosity and support. I promise you I will work even harder to
give back to the community and others with exceptional academic performance.” She hopes to
become a chemical engineer working in the energy field.
The ASURA Scholarship Committee met in April to select the scholarship student after re-
viewing applications from a number of outstanding candidates. Students are selected on the basis
of academic achievement, financial need, academic and career goals, and
other factors. The personal statements from candidates reflect their ambitious and diverse goals.
Recipients of the $10,000 award must have had at least five years since high school graduation
and cannot have completed more than one semester at ASU.
ASURA members have a chance to meet each year’s scholarship student at our annual meeting in the spring, where the student gives a short talk about his or her experiences and interests. Over the years, these scholarship students show what outstanding students are attending ASU from all of its campuses, colleges, schools, and departments—truly an amazing collection.

The 4th Annual Meet and Greet Pizza Party
submitted by Jan Thompson and Barbara Eschbach (Photos by Don Nilsen and David Scheatzle)
The Meet and Greet Pizza Party is getting more popular each year. This year we had more than 80 people register
compared with the 35 we had in 2011. The pre-party panel discussion for new members was also well attended.
The event kicked off with the “What I Wish I’d Known When I Retired” panel session orga-
nized by Jan Thompson. A standing room only group of more than 30 new and "seasoned" retir-
ees contributed to a lively discussion. Jim Hardina, retired ASU Police, started the discussion,
which ranged from pension and financial concerns to health care, physical activity, volunteerism,
and post-retirement occupations. Bob Mings, Jerry Poe, and Jay Braun were instrumental in
keeping the panel session flowing.
Meanwhile Linda Van Scoy, Carol Berg, Carol Moore, Joy Shearman, Don Nilsen, David
Scheatzle, and Jeri Meeks were busy getting the party room ready. Around 11:30, 17 pizzas, 120
cookies, three containers of brownies, and two containers of lemon cakes arrived … all thanks to
the work of Barbara Eschbach and Rick Wall.
Once the food had been dispatched, a short program was presented during which this year's
Board and the committee chairs were introduced. The committee chairs spoke about their upcom-
ing activities.
The attendance was around 50, which was a bit disappointing given the registration numbers,
but there was a nice mix of new faces and old hands. Attendees enjoyed the opportunity to meet
new members and old friends.

Our Fall Luncheon will be held on November 13th at Shalimar Golf Re-sort. In addition to your luncheon choice of entree we will have a special entertainer/storyteller. For those of you who have lived in the valley for a while, you may re-member Mike Chamberlin from his television days. He joined KTVK-3TV in 1988 as the primary sports anchor. Fifteen years later, the station moved him into the primary news anchor position. In February 2006, he moved across town to KPHO News 5 as the morning and noon anchor. Mike has
been performing professionally for almost 50 years. Now that he is retired, he continues to charm audiences with his music and stories. To learn more about Mike, pull up his website … singingtvguy.com … and en-joy. Come join us for lunch and our local storyteller. Additional details to follow on-line.

the concert we will “take our glow” to a local restaurant for an early dinner and maybe some humming!. Order from the
menu and pay for your group.
December 18, 2015, 11:30a.m.-1:30 p.m., Community Services Building, Room 330 Back by popular demand the Holiday Bake Sale will again be held in conjunction with the Potluck. So when you pull out the tried-and-true recipes for your favorite holiday cookies, breads, and candies, just double that recipe and bring a plate to sell. If you wish, you may also contribute small ornaments and/or crafts of any sort to sale. ALL proceeds from the sales will go to ASURA to help fund activities of general interest to all. This is also a great opportunity to visit with former ASU colleagues and with friends you’ve made, or yet to be made, within the ASURA. This event is open to non-ASURA members also so bring your spouse, partner, family members, and friends. Our Holiday Potluck is well attended and always a very festive and convivial holiday event. We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Tovrea Castle Tour — April 1, 2016, 5025 E. Van Buren St., Phoenix
You've all seen the Tovrea "castle" but now how many of you know: (1) anything about the Tovrea family, (2) who actually built the castle, and (3) whose idea was the cactus garden?
Join ASURA on a tour of the castle and gardens to find out the answer to these and other interesting tidbits. The tour will begin in the visitor cen-ter with a short video highlighting the history of the Castle. Next, we will board carts and be driven around the property where we will see the unique cactus gardens and outdoor features. The carts will then take us to the Cas-tle where you’ll have an opportunity to go back in time and learn about the man inspired to build the castle and the people that made it their home. The tour will conclude in the visitor center. Since the tours are limited to 13, ASURA has arranged for two sessions
— 8:30 am and 11:00 am. If you took the tour last year please let your fellow ASURA colleagues have a chance to go this year. The tour cannot accommodate wheel chairs or scooters. This trip is open to ASURA members and their guests with a limit of 3 guests. Registration will open in early March 2016.
