Construction began on the new Production Wing in early June with the removal of the our oil tank in preparation for the transfer to natural gas in the building. The Production Wing construction will take approximately 9 months. The new Wing will include a new loading dock and freight elevator, additional patron ADA accessibilities, new natural gas powered climate control system; and modifications to the former gym (now the Bowen Community Theatre) for expanded programming.
In addition to new construction, MHCA has a number of other projects taking place this summer and fall including a dance room renovation in Room 102; several classroom enhancements; new ramps and doors at selected entrances; and new video monitors. We thank our capital campaign and annual fund donors who make all these activities possible.

July 10 - August 31, 2017CHANEY GALLERY – Exhibition by Photographer Carol Donahue and Painter Gail Higgenbotham
After years of marching solo in their artistic endeavors, artists Carol Donahue and Gail Higgenbotham are exhibiting together in Maryland Hall’s Chaney Gallery. Both women have fostered relationships with Maryland Hall both as an institution and a network of artists and have more recently come to see the similarities in their own work aside from using different mediums.
Carol Donahue is an independent freelance photographer who, though she lives in a rural community on the edge of the Chesapeake Bay, enjoys frequent travel to and from our nation’s capital. Gail Higgenbotham is a Maryland native and painter who uses oil pastels and acrylics to bridge the gap between abstract and representational work. Both Carol and Gail have been heavily influenced by artists-in-residence they have worked with at Maryland Hall and inspired by the building’s variety of opportunities – such as classes, co-ops, fundraisers, exhibitions, and community.
Carol studied photography at Maryland Hall with former instructor Dick Bond. She also studied with Fine Art Photographer Don Kneessi for 4 years at Anne Arundel Community College. Carol says, “There is an intensity in the rhythms of urban architecture and my latest project has been to capture that rhythm. In the spaces there is a balance between stability and movement. I look for the transitions between the buildings and their relationship to the environment. My focus is on creating an image with a strong use of light, line and color. I am excited to capture the energy of life in these spaces that is implied as much as seen”
Gail’s relationship with Maryland Hall has spanned almost 20 years. Her oil pastels have been featured in both the Live and Silent Auctions for MHCA’s All That Art fundraiser. She has previously exhibited in the Martino Gallery and has studied with renowned Maryland Hall Artists-In-Residence such as Bonnie Roth Anderson, John Ebersberger and Mary Arthur. She was also a member of the Painting and Drawing Co-op, lead by Phyllis Avedon, for several years.
Carol Donahue and Gail Higginbotham have exhibited in and around Annapolis for the past four years. There is a complementary style that emerges in their approach to light, color and structure. During 2016 Carol relocated to Houston, on a Texas adventure to be near family, and Gail and her husband cruised the intracoastal waterway for the winter in Charleston, SC. New and different surroundings inspired their work that continues in a voice not hindered by time or distance. Under One Sky represents past and present works for both artists.

Upcoming ExhibitsJuly 10 - August 31MARTINO GALLERY: Representational Ambiguity by Ken KarlicKarclic’s watercolors highlight architecture and structure reduced to pure geometry, and interpreted in a painterly fashion as a vehicle for light and shadow, and as an exploration of representational art dissolving into abstraction.
Opening Reception: September 14 | 5:30September 7 - October 28CHANEY GALLERY: Art Between the CreeksThis exhibit showcases the work of 15-20 local artists who have been exhibiting twice a year for the past 15 years in various warehouses and alternative spaces in Eastport.
MARTINO GALLERY: Alternative Process Journey by Sarah Van KeurenPhotographer Sarah Van Keuren says of her work: “40 years ago I found a sylvan refuge as a tenant in a carriage house by Darby Creek in the first ring of the Philadelphia suburbs. Surrounded by gardens and trees I sought to preserve moments in which I felt at one with nature.”
Opening Reception: November 9 | 5:30 pm November 2 - December 19CHANEY GALLERY: From Here to There by Elizabeth KendallFor her first solo show in Maryland, Elizabeth Kendall presents work in mixed media (glass, ceramic, wood, steel) as her response to new environments and situations. A recent immigrant from Northern Virginia she found herself with a new view, new studio and community, and for the first time, a commute between the two. These new environments and the road between provide the framework for this exhibition. The work represents the conversation between new elements and familiar processes, between the geometry of Annapolis’ brick work, the skewed boards of aging barns, the undulating waves at the shoreline, and everything in between.
MARTINO GALLERY: Our Friends in Feathers and Fur - The Wildlife Paintings of Ric ConnMedium/Technique – PaintingAn exhibition celebrating the environmental and wildlife gouache paintings of internationally-renowned artist Ric Conn.
The galleries are open Monday - Saturday, 10 am to 5 pm.

new fall classesTake great photos in new photography classes These classes for ages 18 and older are taught by new instructor Joe Yablonsky, who specializes in gelatin silver photographs of public sculpture and architecture. (His photo at right is of the Maryland State House.) Joe says of his teaching philosohpy: “I feel that good photographers do more prior to taking the photo than after. Whether it is film or digital, my philosophy is to give every student a strong foundation of the technical considerations (depth of field, exposure) and creative considerations (lighting, balance) that must be addressed prior to pressing the shutter release button. Also, I encourage each and every student to bring their own personality and individuality into the process by pre-visualizing the final image and obtaining photographs that are uniquely their own.” See full class descriptions at www.marylandhall.org.

Learn to be a film critic in our new film classesMaryland Hall is excited to offer two new classes through our new Faith Goldstein and Jesse Cunitz Film and New Media Program. Watch our web site for additional programs this fall and next spring that engage community members through film presentations, discussions, classes and workshops.
These two new classes are taught by Jike Gudger who is on staff at the Filmsters Academy in Annapolis. Jike was exposed to the film culture from a young age and has carried many of the lessons learned from it throughout his life. He received his B.A. in English from St. Mary’s College of Maryland and a MPP from UMBC. He has also spent time teaching in Micronesia as a Peace Corps volunteer. He now holds a Master’s in environmental policy. He just wrapped up session at the state legislature working on policy. Even though he’s not he’s officially “in the business,” Jike spends a good portion of his time writing and workshopping screenplays. Jike has assisted the Annapolis Film Festival for the past several years.
Little Critics: ages 10-15; September 27 through November 1If you love movies and want to know everything about what you are seeing on the screen from story to genres to special effects, then this six-week session exploring how to understand what goes into making a movie is for you. What makes a movie so good you don’t want it to end or not so good or even mediocre? Why do you like a film that your best friend doesn’t like at all? You will discover the answers and learn how to critique a film. The best part is you will know what you are talking about. Let’s watch scenes from movies and praise or punish the filmmakers behind them.
Be a Film Critic..and Know What the Heck You are Talking About: ages 16 through adult; September 27 through November 1; 7-8:30 pmGoing to the movies has long been America’s favorite past time. With all media platforms showing films now, everyone has become a film critic. But what makes your comments unique, compelling and based on a real understanding of commentary? Learn the elements of being able to break down a film for the pur-pose of discussion; what makes a great/poor story, good/weak direction, artistic/plain cinematography etc. We may not all agree on what movies you enjoy, but it is possible to know the difference between a good film and a bad one, and of course those that have some of both. You will have a new level of confidence voicing your own opinion with a fresh perspective. A few special guest appearances (via Skype) of real film critics will bring it all to life. Let’s talk movie!
