Junior and senior pupils worked together at Hipperholme Grammar School Foundation to explore the world of science. Sixth former Gabby Capone, from Halifax, enjoyed helping junior pupils learn how to use microscopes, “The juniors showed no hesitation in getting involved, even when we looked at a cockroach’s head!” Older pupils were impressed by the teamwork, communication and collaboration skills of their young counterparts, “Year 4 & 11 pupils had to build a tower using just newspaper, sellotape and teamwork,” explains Becky Firth from Hipperholme. “The Year 4s had great ideas and were really enthusiastic.” The special week also featured the StarDome, a mobile planetarium where pupils learnt about the solar system.

The seven talented pupils, seen here with Pentathlon GB coach Liam O’Neill, were all finalists in the Pentathlon GB Schools Biathlon Championship 2011-12.

Over 6,000 local aspiring swimmers & runners started on the path to selection last year. Numbers were whittled down through a series of regional heats until the semi-finals in Leeds, where only 75 went forward to the National Finals.

Proud parent, Petar Sismanovic of Rishworth, said, “It was a brilliant day – the children loved competing in such an iconic venue –

Can they dress themselves?

Imagine the scene. One teacher, thirty children & their coats. If your child can do their own they may get some fresh air. Elasticated waistbands help at PE & with dashes to the loo. Avoid tights - they can lead to bathroom accidents. Velcro shoes mean fastenings your child can do themselves.

Are they used to sharing?

Sharing is a difficult but vital lesson if you want your child to settle in & make friends easily. No one wants to play with the child who refuses to take turns & share. Before long that child becomes isolated. Start to make a point of praising your pre-schooler for sharing their bag of figures or sweets.

Can they use the toilet on their own?

Reception classrooms usually have a toilet nearby but children are expected to use it on their own. Less confident children may avoid a visit until it’s too late. Encourage your child to begin taking toilet trips without you to build up their confidence. Remind them that hand washing is part of the ‘visit’. Starting school toilet training now will mean fewer accidents in September.

Can they eat independently?

Dinner halls are noisy places & can make a child feel overwhelmed. Make sure they know how to use a knife & fork. For packed lunches, can they open a yoghurt, put a straw in a juice box & unpeel a banana? Practice now, however painful, will help in September.

10 things to make starting school easierYou’ll know by now which school your child is due to go to in September. For young children this isn’t the time to start force feeding them phonics, it’s about making sure they’re ready for the social challenges of school. As Sarah Butters explains, the more prepared they are, the easier they’ll settle & the more they’ll get out of those early days.

Can they recognise their name?

If so, they’ll be able to find their peg, identify their drawer in the classroom & find their cardigan in the PE pile. Starting school can make even the most confident child feel a little lost. If they can locate important places, it will make them feel more in control.

Can they use scissors?

Teachers look for this in the early stages of Reception to evaluate dexterity. Get crafty over the next few months.

Do they understand discipline?

Hitting, kicking, biting & hair pulling will not be tolerated. Reputations earned in the early days of school can be hard to shake off – so it’s best to get it right.

Can they communicate with an adult?

Encourage your child to ask & even practice with a raised hand at home to make sure they understand the most effective way of getting an adult’s attention. Giving your child the skills to communicate with their teacher means they’ll be able to have some control over going to the toilet or getting help with their work. A child who can communicate will get more out of the school day than a child who is unwilling to speak up.

Are they able to count?

If your child is able to count up to 20 & count back from 10, this will give them a really good head start. Use some of their favourite toys or foods to make counting fun. Lay out 10 grapes & get them to eat them one by one, counting as they go. It will give them confidence & help them see learning as fun. Plus it’s a great way to get one of their 5 a day down them!

Can they follow simple instructions?

The school day is full of instructions. Your child will be asked to put coats on pegs, bring packed lunches into classrooms & sit cross legged on the carpet for circle time. If a child is used to following instructions, they will avoid being reprimanded. The more time a teacher dedicates to repeating instructions & encouraging co-operation, the less time there is for teaching. Start giving your child simple tasks – perhaps helping with the weekly shop or with some straight forward jobs around the house. It will prepare them for school life.

Whatever the age of your child, if you’re not happy with the school you’ve been allocated you may wish to consider an independent school.

Share your party

You’ll halve the cost. Works really well when children in the same class have birthdays close together – guests don’t have to choose between invites & parents don’t feel like they’re on a party merry-go-round.

Make your own party bags

Get plain paper bags so guests can decorate them with felt pens & stickers. Birthday cake is the sweet treat. Buy an age-appropriate pack of books from www.thebookpeople.co.uk & put a book in each bag. Top quality for under £2 each.

Simplify your party menu.

Pizza delivered to your party is a great idea & the kids love it. Share out big jugs of drinks, not individual cartons. Jelly & ice-cream is cheaper & more amusing than lots of biscuits or fairy cakes.

Make your own party entertainment

Children still love traditional party games (my favourite was always ‘murder in the dark’!) You have to put some effort in, but it’s much cheaper than hiring an entertainer. Try some of these: – Pass the parcel, musical statues & a disco dancing competition.

Make a junk robot – save all your boxes for a couple of weeks beforehand then let the children loose with glue & Sellotape.

The newspaper game is brilliant fun – a pile of broadsheets, two teams, screw up the paper into balls, shout “GO” & the winning

team is the one with the least paper left on their side.

Paint a plant pot. Doubles as an activity & a going home gift. You could add sunflower or cress seeds too.

Party in the park or garden

Whatever the season, if everyone’s dressed appropriately, outdoors is fantastic.

Do your venue research or use your home

Church halls & council run venues like leisure centres can be good value to hire. If you're using your own home, then create boundaries for the guests – a big red X on rooms out of bounds worked a treat for a friend of mine – you don’t want to find jelly in your bed!

This is the age of the train

If a DIY party isn’t your idea of fun – for you or your child – then there are lots of party providers. Here we focus on four very different ways to make your child’s birthday memorable for all the right reasons.

If Thomas the Tank Engine is your child’s idea of perfection, then imagine their delight at hosting their own birthday party on board a real train. That’s the treat in store for those lucky enough to have a party at Kirklees Light Railway.

As well as exclusive use of the birthday carriage for the birthday meal, party-goers experience a return train ride to Shelley Station, pulled along by one of KLR’s Great Little Steam Engines. A party host ensures everything runs smoothly and with great play areas at both ends of the track, there are plenty of opportunities for your guests to ‘steam around’ before and after the event.

If you’re looking for something where everyone can burn off some energy but soft play isn’t for your child then Colne Valley Black Belt Academy may be just the thing you’re looking for. A karate party is definitely a party with a difference that they’ll all be talking about long after it’s over.

You don’t need to be a black belt to take part – but be assured that the party leader will be! The children will be entertained with lots of martial arts based games.

Ted had his 6th birthday party at CVBBA and his mum was delighted, “It was his best party ever. All the children thoroughly enjoyed it. If you want something filled with energy and games, a karate party is just the thing. It was brilliantly run by Niko – he made Ted’s day very special indeed. Very reasonably priced too as you don’t pay per head!”

Power partyFor Neela Jackson of Creation Station the great thing about leading an arty party is seeing the children follow their own creative ideas. “Every item that’s created is individual,” she says.

Parents certainly seem happy with the results. “My daughter’s 5th birthday was a big hit! Some of them are still talking about the special rhyme for getting the goodies out of the creation station treasure chest,” says Amanda from Todmorden .

“Neela organised my son’s 6th birthday party back in October and it was fantastic,” says Nicola from Halifax.”I’m looking forward to her running my daughter’s 4th birthday on Saturday. The package for birthday parties has so much choice!”

And you don’t have to hire a hall. Sally from Shaw used her own home. “Neela arrived before the party with everything ready and got things covered up. The children had a fantastic time. If you want a party that’s different then book Neela for a brilliant day full of fun and creativity!”

Bouncers in Diggle is the ultimate indoor play venue for energetic youngsters who want to burn off lots of energy before they sit down to eat. With enormous trampolines, huge inflatable slides and a host of other equipment guaranteed to entice the physically adventurous, it’s a big hit for parties for those aged 2 to 12.

Owner Paul has introduced ‘Smart Parties’ which are tailor-made to suit your budget. Discuss your needs with him and he’ll come up with the best deal available.

For those who don’t just want to rush around, there are now ‘paint-a-pot’ parties with artwork that you can take home on the day. For those aged 8-12, then a Bouncers disco is an option.

Healthy option menus are available and the party meal takes place in a separate party hut so your guests can chill out whilst others are using the play area.

Parents certainly seem to enjoy seeing their children party at Bouncers. “We had a really great party – the food was fantastic,” says Sue from Oldham. Mum of 6, Jill from Ashton, says, “Bouncers is totally unique – we don’t know of anywhere like it. My kids were exhausted!”

It’s a great party – & some photos that capture the moment would be brilliant but even with the forgiving nature of digital photography you’re no pro & you don’t want to see your child’s party entirely through a lens. So what can you do? Gaynor Wilson, of Shy Violet Photography, gives her top 5 tips.

Children’s parties are usually full of energy, emotion, action & interaction. That means photos are a challenge. But these tips can help:

1 Designate one person to take the photographs - & make this their only job! You’re then guaranteed to get some shots to remember the occasion.

2 It’s very important to get down low when photographing children – do not take from

If you’re looking for something different and unique as a birthday gift for your child, then the Kids Wall Company may be just what you’re looking for. Whether their passion is space, fairies, dinosaurs or princesses, Carl Hirst from Saddleworth can conjure up a special look for your child’s bedroom.

Heidy, mum of Samuel, Edward & Thomas says, “Carl's artwork is excellent and plenty of research is done beforehand to get exactly what you want. We’re very pleased with the end result.”

Janine, Hannah’s mum, is just as happy: “Carl’s artwork is totally amazing. Everyone comments how brilliant it is and Hannah tells anyone she can how much she loves it. Highly recommended!”

Manchester City supporters Allison and her son William are delighted with William’s ‘City’ bedroom. “It was a surprise for William and he was thrilled to bits. He said it was awesome and has invited all his friends round to see it.”

Top 5 tips for party photography

a standing position - your photos should be taken at their eye level whenever possible.

3 However if it’s a group shot of the fun you want, try getting on a chair to photograph the party. Shout something funny to make all the children look at you at once. Try to mix up shots from all angles to get a good dynamic set of images.

4 A lot of children’s parties are inside where light can be tricky. The easiest way to

overcome this is to learn to use your white balance controls. But do it before the party! Experiment with white balance on your camera & get your setting right.

5 Let the person taking the photographs know when key events will happen – presents opened, cake lit, candles blown out. Then they can plan ahead & find the best position for these events.

Grab some red, white and blue face paints and follow the steps below.

Use a brush & white paint to sketch out the shape of the flag,

the central cross & the diagonals with a fine line. Then fill in the diagonals.

With bright red paint & a brush, fill in the central cross, then add

the fine diagonal lines.

To finish, use royal blue paint & the brush, fill in the eight

triangular shapes that remain.

6 The Queen has visited places no other British monarch has been too – including China in 1986, Russia in 1994 & Korea in 1999.

7 The first Royal walkabout happened in 1970 during a visit to Australia & New Zealand because the Queen & Duke of Edinburgh wanted to meet lots of people, not just officials & dignitaries.

8 The Queen has made a Christmas Broadcast every year apart from 1969. 2006 was its first year as a podcast.

9 The Queen has owned over 30 corgis during her reign – Susan being the first, Monty, Willow & Holly being the current three.

10 The Queen will be 85 on Accession Day in 2012 making her the oldest monarch to celebrate a Diamond Jubilee.
