The Heathfield Pennine Biathlon launched in glorious spring sunshine on Tuesday 8 March 2011. Year 4 & 5 pupils from schools in Cumberworth, Elland, Lightcliffe, Luddendenfoot, Rishworth, Sowerby Bridge and Triangle raced against the clock in the warmth of the Heathfield swimming pool and the bracing air of the bottom pitch as they swam and ran their hearts

out to be the first school to have their name engraved on the winner’s shield.

That honour went to Heathfield because of what Pentathlon GB’s Liam O’Neill described as, “their strength in depth.”

The winner for the Year 4 boys was Reon Todd

from Hipperholme Grammar Junior School; Year 4 girls, Hannah Speakman from Heathfield; Year 5 boys, Carrick Keighley Payne from Triangle CofE Primary; and Year 5 girls, Kiera Baillie from Hipperholme Grammar Junior School. Parents and supporters from all seven schools were delighted by the spectacle. Luddendenfoot parent, Rebekah Bell, praised the event, saying, “It’s brilliant to see all the schools mix together in a good atmosphere – and if some are better than others, then it gives everyone something to aim for.”

Saddleworth mum Nicola Donnelly is delighted with her son Max’s room. “We wanted it to be fun,” she explains. “Carl came and chatted to us, found out what Max likes and created a fantastic mural. Max is 4 and loves aliens so Carl has painted cheeky aliens on the wall – we love hearing Max and his friends chuckle as they discover new things about it.”

Carl studied art after leaving school, planning to be a teacher but his career took a different path until his love for art was rekindled with the birth of his own children.

As Carl explains, “At 14, I was painting my friends’ bedroom walls with Che Guevara and Iron Maiden album covers – the difference now is that I get parents’ permission first.”

That was the question Families Pennines had to ask when visiting Diane Blundell at her light, bright and airy Jazzy Pipkins Paint A Pot Studio on Uppermill High Street.

Diane, a Saddleworth mum of 7 year old twins, has totally revamped the inside of the shop opposite the Museum, making it an ideal venue for the whole family to discover their creative side.

Trust me, it’s great fun to all sit down and paint a pot together – and it’s lovely when you call back to collect your artwork a few days later after it’s been fired in the kiln.

Diane was an Area Sales Manager for a large engineering company covering the north which meant a lot of travel. The family were on holiday in Scotland when they first experienced the joys of pot painting for themselves and that got Diane

thinking about a change of career.

Jazzy Pipkins opened in February and is proving a popular addition to Uppermill’s High Street. Diane also provides mobile studios for nurseries and schools and will open in the evening for parties & group bookings (minimum 10 people).

If you decide you don’t want your child to use a mobile phone you may still face the cry of children through the ages when thwarted in getting something they want. The Parent Practice blog on the Families website reassures you that they won’t be the only one without a mobile.

If you say yes to a mobile, make your child aware of the importance of keeping the phone away from their body in a bag rather than a pocket.

The Parent Practice offers the following tips

l keep it simple - if the phone has internet access you can’t monitor what they see so choose a model that prohibits access

l ensure your child knows to tell you if they receive an unwanted text, image or link

But everybody else has one!

What is a Jazzy Pipkin?

A new Department of Health leaflet spells out that children under the age of 16 should use mobile phones for essential purposes only. It says: “The body and nervous

So what is the best advice when using a mobile phone?There is no immediate need for concern when using mobile phones or having a base station in your area. This is because, despite much research, there is no convincing evidence that either will cause harm. However, we have only been using mobile phones widely for the last decade or so and we need more research to look at the situation, particularly in the long term.

When you’re pregnant, whether it’s your first or your fourth, you soon realise how important a good midwife is to your wellbeing and that of your baby. NHS midwives do a tremendous job – but for those mums who feel they’d like more attention than the NHS can provide Families Pennines is delighted to announce the arrival of a brand new service. Louise Bennett reports on My Own Midwife.

Meet Tameside mums Andrea Plumbley, Colette Boyd-Terry and Janet Blair. With their friend and colleague Catherine Chmiel, who isn’t camera-shy but was on holiday, they want to provide you with the best ante and post-natal care possible.

All four are Nursing & Midwifery Council registered midwives and between them they have 36 years of experience – they’ve lost count of how many babies they’ve brought into the world but it’s thousands.

Each of them has two children, with ages ranging from 7 to 2. Between them they’ve experienced all manner of births: home, hospital, normal, water and caesareans.

They’re all part-time NHS midwives and are passionate in their commitment to the NHS. But as Colette explains, “When we were pregnant, we looked after each other outside of the time-constraints of NHS care.” Andrea continues, “The idea for My Own Midwife came from the personal service we were able to give each other – we wanted to share that with other people.” Janet adds, “We really enjoy time spent with mums-to-be and we want to be able to answer their questions, guide them through their pregnancy and help them in those crucial first weeks after their baby is born.”

So what is My Own Midwife?It’s a bespoke midwifery service that you can tailor exactly to meet your needs and budget. MoM’s services and costs are set out very clearly on their website w w w.myownmidwife.co.uk

Something that many working parents-to-be will find appealing is that MoM provide antenatal visits in your own home at a time that suits you. MoM has already found that fathers-to-be really appreciate the home-based approach – there isn’t any embarrassment at being part of a large class of people they don’t know and they find comfort in knowing their pregnant partner has a dedicated team of people who are only a phone-call away.

MOM have full access to a variety of diagnostic scans, tests and fellow professionals, including a private Consultant Obstetrician and Foetal Medicine specialist.

If all this starts to sound perilously expensive, it needn’t be. MoM see their service as a menu of things they offer for you to choose from. An hour-long initial consultation costs £50, with no obligation to use their services beyond that. They can also refer you to the relevant NHS service or consultant as necessary.

What about the birth?Private midwifery has traditionally been chosen by people who want a home birth. MoM is different because it provides private midwifery care to those who prefer a hospital birth but want to benefit from private ante and post-natal care.

As with all private midwives working independently from the NHS, MoM is not able to act as your midwife in labour in a hospital setting. MoM help to prepare you for birth through their antenatal care but the birth is handed over to the maternity unit of your choice.

Congratulations! What happens now? So you finally meet the person you’ve been carrying for up to 9 months – and there are a whole range of emotions for you and your partner to run through. It can be delightful. It can be tough. The first few weeks after giving birth are often a mixture of highs, lows and everything inbetween. And this is where MoM can be a real asset in helping you, your partner and your baby get used to each other and your new way of living for up to six weeks.

During that time they can:l advise on feeding (breastfeeding and bottlefeeding) l advise on caring for your baby such as bathing, sleeping and safety l provide a debrief service on your labour and delivery, allowing you time to reflect on your experience with skilled professionals – possibly over a cup of tea!

Children love birthday parties – but it can be stressful for the adults who are organising it. No parent wants to disappoint the birthday child - but how to pick the right option without breaking the bank or wrecking the home?

Worry not - it’s Families Pennines to the rescue with this four-page pull out and keep guide as Robina Cowan and Louise Bennett put on their party hats to find the best suppliers around so your ‘do’ is one they’ll talk about, at least until next year...

Before you start Different age-groups have different needs. The party doesn’t have to last all afternoon - around two hours is enough, before everyone gets tired and emotional (not least the host parents). As a guide:

Keep it simple. Opt for a small family/ friends get-together buffet with similar aged children. Enjoy it while you can - it’s a doddle to organise and sociable for the adults. (It has been known for babies to sleep right through while the grown-ups catch up over nibbles.)

They need lots of action. Name badge them on arrival then capture their imagination with simple ‘circle time’ singing, clapping games, & ‘dancing’ (i.e. jumping up and down to music). Hang balloons high so they don’t burst and it all ends in tears. Ideal guest list for this age around 8-12 children in a familiar venue - often your home (sorry about that!).

Traditional party games work well, such as Simon Says, Pass the Parcel & What’s the Time Mr Wolf. Allow space and time too for simply zipping around for a burst of unstructured play. A maximum of 20 guests at this age is about right

Ready for more concentration and involvement in the party entertainment. Most are now old and skilled enough for arts and crafts (making their own goodie bag filler at the same time, which is jolly handy).

This worldly-wise lot is unlikely to want Mummy and Daddy embarrassing them by donning a paper hat and insisting on joining in (save it for when they’re teens - it’ll be SO much more fun for you). They’ll be wanting to do something special, such as bowling, karting, a mini disco in the living room, or a Glee style drama and singing workshop.

Top Tips for planning your party It’s all in the timing For little children, 11am-1pm or 12-2pm are best. Most of them have been up since six and they’re past their best by the afternoon. For older children a lunchtime slot or mid-afternoon start will work.

Liaise with parents whose children have similar birthdays If you both book the same day for a party, the guest list will be tricky. Join forces - you can share the costs, the joys and any hassle.

Keep the food simple and don’t over caterMost children are too excited to have a big appetite. Limit junk food and check for vegetarians and food intolerances.

SleepoversCome midnight, you’ll be regretting it... Planning ahead is KEY. Book venues well aheadThere are only so many party groups venues can accommodate at any given time - you don’t want to be scratching around at the last minute and end up somewhere you’d rather not be or paying way more than you planned.

EntertainersTap into their knowledge of local venues for hire, a realistic timetable and suitable prizes as well as the entertainment itself. Find out their preferred age group and maximum number of children - too many and you’ll not get the best out of them. Write down everything you’ve agreed together so there is no doubt on the day.

If you have fond memories of fun fairs where you could put a coin in the slot and ‘drive’ an electric car round a small roundabout at sub-milkfloat pace, then you’ll understand the appeal of this next party option.

Daytona Manchester Indoor Karting Centre hosted Louise Bennett's son’s best ever party (and he’s had some good ones). Ten 8 year olds had the greatest time as they drove around the indoor karting circuit at speeds over 25 km/hour – with the girls just as competitive and grinning as broadly as the boys. From the moment they sat down and gave their undivided attention to Formula 1 commentator Martin Brundell’s instruction and safety film you could tell they knew they were in for a real treat.

With suits, helmets and neck supports all provided and in place they went out five at

a time under the expert marshalling of the Daytona team. Parents on the observation balcony found any jitters dispelled as they cheered on their offspring.

As helmets came off, the Cheshire cat would have been proud of the grins – the only disappointment was the half-hour on track had come to an end.

A party tea in the sound-proofed lounge area followed and as each party-goer received their individual Lap Time Analysis sheet they were eager to see how fast they’d made it round the track. Words like “Awesome” were overheard as people drifted off towards the car park.

It’s not a cheap party – but Daytona do this well and safety is central to their approach. For Bambino drivers (5-7 years) a 4 driver party is £102; 8 drivers £200. For Junior Novices (8-15 years) 5 drivers £190; 10 drivers £345.

Lovely Littleborough

If you don’t know Littleborough already then summer is a good time to get to know it. From the shimmering beauty of Hollingworth Lake to the gritstone rock of Blackstone Edge it’s a dramatic part of the Pennines not far from Junction 21 of the M62.

For families who enjoy the outdoors, Hollingworth Lake Country Park has it all and comes highly recommended by Littleborough family, the Waltons.

A good starting point is The Visitor Centre, at the far end of the lake as you approach from the M62 Milnrow end. There’s plenty of parking – less crowded than by the lakeside – though you’ll need change as it’s all pay and display: 2 hours 80p; 2-4 hours £1.10; over 4 hours £2.10. The Centre has exhibitions, information, a café and toilets.

Close by there’s a small sensory garden, a children’s play area and the starting point for some great walks.

Junior Helpers is a free club for 7-11s run by the Countryside Rangers based at the Visitor Centre. It meets monthly on Saturdays, 2-4pm and all the environmental events are outdoors – so dress appropriately! Ring 01706 373421 to find out more and reserve a place.

Hollingworth Lake was built over 200 years ago to supply water to the Rochdale Canal and was known as the weaver’s seaport in late Victorian times. There’s still an air of ‘seaside in the hills’ as people promenade past a traditional amusement arcade, ice-cream parlour, fish & chip shop, cafés, restaurants, pubs and shops.

The Hollingworth Lake Water Activity Centre is rightly popular with children and parents alike. A dedicated team offer expert tuition

and a good dollop of fun for children aged 4-14 through Splashout holiday activities and weekly Kids Clubs.

The Splashout Multi Activity courses are particularly popular, giving 7-14 year olds the chance to try sailing, windsurfing, rock climbing, mountain biking, team building and kayaking over a three-day period. Father’s Day is a modern American creation that struggled to establish itself. The driving force was a lady called Sonora Smart Dodd. She heard a sermon about Mother’s Day and decided fathers should have their own day too. Unlike Anna Jarvis, who loathed the commercialisation of Mother’s Day, Dodd welcomed retailers’ efforts to promote it.

As with Mum on Mothering Sunday, the important thing is to show your Dad you love and appreciate him - and that doesn’t cost a thing. Families Pennines’ research shows Dads aren’t equal when it comes to their special day – there were lots of

Take him to the park – remember dads are still big kids at heart (extensive observational research confirms this - Ed) so let him run about and go mad for an hour – if he’s very good maybe you could let him have an ice-cream!

Let him choose which toys to play with – did we mention that dads are still big kids? Let him loose in your toybox and see what he wants to play with – Lego? Frisbee? Hand puppet? Just make sure he plays nicely and tidies up when playtime is over.
