Hit the trail! Calder Valley charity to launch innovative new e-trails
eureka! The National Children’s Museum in Halifax, is celebrating record-breaking visitor numbers. over 83,000 people have visited the award-winning children’s museum during the first quarter of 2014, almost double the number of visitors for the same period in 2013.
Eureka! Chief Executive Leigh-Anne Stradeski says, “2014 has been a bumper year with our new gallery All About Me proving to be a popular draw for families wanting to play as they learn. Attractions across the region report an increase in visitors - an encouraging trend for our cultural institutions. We’re delighted so many families are heading to Halifax for their days out. Long may it continue!”
The All About Me gallery encourages children to make positive choices about their health and wellbeing, and was named the UK’s Top Interactive Exhibition for Children by parenting network Mumsnet.

Hebden Bridge based charity Pennine Horizons has just introduced electronic trails to enhance four walks in the Calder Valley area. The e-trails are downloadable to smart phone or MP3 player and include interesting stories of local events and people plus information about the ecology and industrial heritage of the area. Nine more are planned in the near future. Some will be challenging whilst others will be more suitable for families of all ages and abilities.
Pennine Horizons is a local Heritage Lottery Fund project which aims to encourage residents and visitors to explore the history of the Pennine landscape and its industrial legacy. Volunteers are needed to develop the group’s services.

Life’s an Event is organising a sponsored walk at Hardcastle Crags, Hebden Bridge, to raise money for Healthy Minds Calderdale.
The gentle 2.3 mile walk will be a chance for parents to socialise and exercise, accompanied by their babies, toddlers and children – and well behaved dogs on leads too.

families pennines asked local legal experts Wilkinson Woodward for an update on the latest in family law. family law specialist, Liza pickles, explains the recent changes to the way child support is calculated.On 25 November 2013, the Government introduced changes to the way child maintenance is calculated. The new “gross income scheme” applies to all new child maintenance applications from that date and simplifies the process of assessing the level of child support required from the main income earner.
The new scheme (which has not been widely publicised) means that child support payments are now based on gross income, making the process of assessing payments simpler and more transparent. The changes could benefit the person with care, which is often mum. For existing cases, the old “net income” regime still applies.
Before considering a change to the new scheme, take professional advice to see whether or not it would benefit you.

Craig Mairs had been appointed the new principal of oldham Hulme Grammar School, where he has been a member of staff since his student teacher days. The 41 year old is currently deputy principal, responsible for the school’s sixth form, and will take over from Dr paul Neeson, who retires next September.
Mr Mairs lives in Shaw but was born in Limavady, Northern Ireland. He gained
an MA in English literature and history at Edinburgh University before completing a postgraduate certificate in education at Manchester University.
Mr Mairs says, “I am absolutely thrilled at the appointment. My main teaching practice was at Hulme, and a vacancy came up in the English department and I started in September 1996.”
He explained the school’s attraction: “There is a really special atmosphere. I have been fortunate in being able to progress in my career while working somewhere I have come to love.
Mr Mairs’ daughter Alexandra (7) is a pupil at the school, and his two-year-old son, Samuel, is hoping to join the kindergarten in September.

Heathfield’s School Council wanted to support the NSPCC as their charity last term, and decided to do something extraordinary to raise money.
Running a hundred miles sounded like a great idea – shared between all the children in the School! Each child ran one mile, with lots of help for the younger pupils! Over £2500 was raised for the NSPCC.
Mr Anthony Wilkins, Head of Heathfield School said: “We are very proud of all members of the Heathfield community, and delighted that Heathfield has been able to make such a significant contribution to the NSPCC!”

An exhibition by Calderdale Primary Schools co-ordinated by Heathfield School, Rishworth, is taking place at Bankfield Museum till 6th May with free admission. The work on show was developed at a collaborative art day with Calderdale schools participating in print based workshops, supported by Heathfield’s Art Co-ordinator Ellen Robinson, and five 6th form Art students from Rishworth.
Pupils developed collagraphs, mono prints, Polyboard and wax crayon prints, using their portraits as a starting point and moved onto artwork based on their school buildings, printing with everyday things, including Lego bricks, wooden blocks and toy cars.

So how should spelling be taught?
Steve Uttley, of NumberWorks’nWords Huddersfield, answers Families Pennines’ questions on spellings.
Parents often say that they don’t understand why their child can perform so well on the school weekly spelling test, but can’t retain the words for future use in written text.
The answer is simple:Your child is young and has a good short term memory.
Most children can learn the 20 words necessary for the weekly spelling test. The problem is the words are committed to short term memory for the purpose of getting 20/20 in the test. This has a ‘feel good’ factor but it can contribute little to the child’s application of spelling words to written sentences or stories.

Tour de France
The Dance Zone is rolling out an 8 week Tour de France (TDF) dance project open to all primary and upper schools in Kirklees.
The project will work alongside the Huddersfield Giants Cheerleading Squad who will go into the schools to teach the students a specially devised dance routine focused around the TDF.
The participants will then be invited to perform their routine in front of the Huddersfield Giants home crowd at the first:utility Super League game against Salford Red Devils on Saturday the 5th July 2014 as a warm up for the actual TDF events on the 6th July. Some schools will be lining the route along the 15 mile route through Huddersfield whilst others will be invited to be part of the official celebrations in the city centre.

I wanted to go into childcare from school and my placement as a nanny when I studied for NNEB childcare qualifications led me into nannying and a live-in job in Holmfirth. Short nannying jobs helped me travel through Australia and I started nurse training on my return (to become a Health Visitor) until I became pregnant.
I worked as a part-time nanny with a family with similarly aged children for six years and the children came to work with me. My eldest has special needs so this worked for all of us. I enjoy having personal involvement with a family building a close relationship, but still maintained a professional line.

Children’s drama and imaginative play company, Pyjama Drama, has agreed a deal with National Children’s Museum, Eureka! to run classes in the museum and surrounding area. The classes will be taught by Eureka! with ongoing training and support provided by Pyjama Drama.
Pyjama Drama was created by former drama teacher Sarah Owen, currently operating 30 franchises across
the UK and has won a number of awards including being named ‘Best Under 5s’ activity in the Netmums awards.
The award winning classes encourage children to play imaginatively and introduce them to simple drama games and techniques. Commenting on the deal Sarah said, “We are absolutely delighted that one of the most well respected children’s organisations in the country will be showcasing our classes. We have a very similar ethos to Eureka! as we both strongly believe in inspiring children about the world around them. I am looking forward to working with them and to a long standing partnership.”
Classes are starting in the museum initially with a longer term plan to expand into venues across the wider geographical area. Pennines Parties
I know that my children have a birthday on the same date every year (after all – I was instrumental in their birth!) Why, then, do I NEVER get myself organised in PLENTY of time. Last year DS2 did not have a party at all – which then makes for guilt this year and a spectacularly over indulgent party planned. That is why Families Pennines is bringing you some party planning ideas to help and guide you towards a party that is just right for your child, their friends and - perhaps most importantly – you and your budget!
let’s get this Party Started!
Here are some things I have learnt from experience and work well for us – there are lots of local suppliers who can help too and we have included some of those for you in this issue.
1. Save the day
When would you like the party? Decide as soon as possible which time and day of the week will be best (or least problematic for the majority!) and identify any major events or festivals which clash. Send invitations at least a month ahead clearly showing what the party style is and if the parent or carer will need to stay. Include RSVP details - your name, number/email and ‘reply by’ date so you can chase up anyone who doesn’t get back to you. At this stage check dietary requirements and other special needs.
2. who’s who
Have a rough idea of who will be coming for numbers – will their parent or carer need to supervise them, will siblings be included? Will you need to plan space and catering for them?
3. Budgeting
How much is in the kitty for the party? Set how much would you like to spend per child and in total. Remember to factor in your child’s clothing, invites, party bags, decorations and thank yous as well as the party itself. Could you share your party and some of the cost with another family celebrating at the same time with mostly the same guests eg another child in the same class at nursery or school?
4. Get help!
What help will you need to run the party? Can you do this by yourself or will you need a party organiser to really help things along! What suppliers and venues could you consider? You will need to book really early to get exactly what you want as the best providers get overbooked, so leave yourself plenty of time.
5. Home or away?
Make your party age appropriate for your child and their friends. Look at your options with that in mind – party at home might be fine for smaller children but look at a venue or activity that you will be comfortable with as well especially for older or very active children. Be aware that our little darlings DO change their minds – often - and be clear with them that once decided, and it is booked, that is it! A Peppa Pig themed ‘do’ might be difficult to turn into a Ninja Turtles event at the drop of a hat!
6. Clear arrangements
Check out what your party venue or entertainer provides and what you need to provide (we once went to a party where everything but the cake was provided by the venue, but the parents weren’t clear that they must supply a cake – tumbleweed moment when the candles should’ve been lit!)
7. Responsible partying
Be clear who is supervising the children at the party and if it is the party venue’s staff or if you have employed an entertainer check out their credentials including insurance, safety and child protection policy. If you expect a parent or carer to stay with their child be absolutely clear when the invitation is sent out and accepted. Otherwise make sure you have mum or dad’s contact details in case a guest falls ill, has a bump or just needs reassurance!
8. Catering
The sky is the limit! If the venue offers it – grab with both hands. Caterers are available for children’s parties and can provide good value but if you need to DIY then keep it simple – we love coloured paper sandwich bags or themed party boxes full of pre-packed goodies (one per child), otherwise big sharing plates to dip into with sandwiches, snacks and green things! We also like cupcakes on stands rather than a cake as they can be quickly popped into party bags without cutting up and a lot of mess. Make sure you cater for ALL your guests needs or ask their parent or carer if they would mind helping you to put something together that would suit.
9. Little finishing touches
A venue based party or one with an organiser or entertainer may supply rudimentary invitations and party bags. If your budget runs to it why not make your child’s day really special with invitations and thank yous themed to the party style, and let your imagination run wild with decor and with party bags - make that cake a really fab affair. If you don’t have the time, skill or inclination then rest assured that there are some lovely local suppliers you can support and they can take the strain of personalising your little ones’ parties for you.
10. Feet up
When the party is over, make sure there is a treat lined up for you too – not just a tonne of party food leftovers! Make a mental note of what worked and what didn’t. Spread the word about the positive experiences you had of your local party supplier and give them your support – you will most probably need them again in 12 months time!
