NURTURING GREAT POTENTIAL 2

612-668-4670 Lake Nokomis Community School strives for academic excellence by setting high expectations for our students. In our safe, caring environment, we challenge students to reach beyond mastery of the basic skills to achieve their greatest potential.

Each parent, guardian, student, teacher, community member and business person who walks through the front door makes our school a special place. Our common goal is to provide students with a safe place where they are challenged to learn. We continue to invite the community to our activities and to become active in our school.

Lake Nokomis Community Schools

Philosophy and Beliefs are to

o Develop a sense of community where safety, respect and school day extends beyond the school experience.

o Provide authentic learning experiences that are intellectually stimulating and developmentally appropriate.

o Build a love for learning. o Validate each individual’s personal needs, interests,

culture, beliefs and experiences. o Model ethical and professional behavior for

learning. We promote school spirit! o Respond to the teaching and learning opportunities

that present themselves, to be flexible with time and planning.

o Commit to diversity and cultural competency by valuing diversity; understanding reflecting and embracing it.

Our Commitment to Service Learning: Students gain a better understanding of themselves, the world in which they live, and the opportunity and responsibility they have to improve both. We expect all members of the Lake Nokomis Community to demonstrate integrity in all they do. That means that honest, moral, respectful and fair behavior is expected on the part of all the members of the Lake Nokomis Community School. Our Legacy Events: At each grade level we strive to create signature experiences that define and enhance each grade within their academic requirements. These events create excitement and enthusiasm while reinforcing school spirit. Jane Ellis, Principal, Keewaydin / Grades 4-8

1. School Newsletter (all school) will be published the first of the month on the Keewaydin Web page.

2. Classroom Newsletters should be coming home

weekly. Most teachers are posting updates and classroom news via the internet. In addition you should expect a weekly outline of the week’s goals and academic plans. Please be sure to check with your child’s teacher.

3. Keewaydin’s Web site:

lakenokomis.mpls.k12.mn.us

4. Email Addresses are accessed and used by all Keewaydin staff as a vital home link. Please know that teachers check their email at least once during the school day.

5. Parent Portal allows families of 6th – 8th graders to

have access to grades & assignments. New this year, families of 4th & 5th grade students will have class generated assignment reports sent home with them on a regular basis.

6. Lake Nokomis Family Directory is a new invaluable

resource produced to assist in school- parent/guardian communication within Lake Nokomis Community School. Forms were sent home early with the first school mailing, and must be returned in order for our

PTA to include your family’s home information. This is purely an option.

Use or reproduction of this directory in any form for non –school approved purposes is strictly forbidden.

If You Have a Concern: The Lake Nokomis Community School motto applies to all grade levels: If it crosses your mind more than once, it is probably worth a call or an email. It is always easier for us to solve a problem early while it is small rather than taking the chance it will grow and be more difficult to solve later. Parents and guardians are strongly encouraged to contact teachers directly should concerns arise. While it may feel awkward at times to approach a teacher with a concern, please remember that all teachers want to do their best for each student. We actively seek to partner with families to help children become happy, healthy, resilient and independent. At each middle school developmental stage different needs emerge. Whatever the situation, honest and open communication is vital. Keewaydin will also communicate with families on a regular basis about individual student performance and social/emotional development.

Teachers Study the Principles of Learning The teachers continue to study to become better at making sure your child learns when he/she comes to school. We as educators know that we must continue to learn in order to make this happen. The nine Principles of Learning we are studying include:

1) Organizing for Effort 2) Clear Expectations 3) Fair and Credible Evaluations 4) Recognition of Accomplishment 5) Academic Rigor in a Thinking Curriculum 6) Accountable Talk 7) Socializing Intelligence 8) Self-Management of Learning 9) Learning as Apprenticeship

These nine areas of focus help the teachers learn how to: present material so students learn, teach children how to talk about what they are learning, how they organize the materials they are learning and how to recognize students for their learning. The focus becomes the student learning. As parents, you can help your child learn to focus on what they are learning by talking with them about what they do in school. If you want your child to talk about what they do in school, do not ask a question they can answer with a “yes” or a “no” because that is likely all the information you will get. Ask them to show you or tell you about how they learned how to do something during the day.

Ex.: What did you do that was exciting or new? Show me a problem that you worked on in class that was new or that you learned today. Tell me about the story you read or the one you wrote today. What’s in the news today? How do you know when you get a great score on an assignment? As the teachers learn, so do the students and each of you can find out what your child is learning:

1) Give your child many options of items to read: newspaper, magazines, comics, books, etc

2) Ask your child about his/her day. What did they do and learn, what’s happening in their classroom?

3) Visit your child’s classroom. 4) Participate in the school activities. 5) Volunteer to help at school events. 6) Get to know your child’s teacher via e-mail or

phone calls.

Keewaydin School

Students at Keewaydin will continue to use the curriculum that is used in grades 1-3 when they move to grades 4 and 5. However student in 4th and 5th will have two teachers throughout the year to deliver specific grade level content. Students in grades 6 through 8 will be taught the four basic core curriculum areas of language arts, social studies, math and science by highly qualified and licensed teachers. They will use curriculum adopted in the district and reviewed by the strategic planning committee. Our curriculum provides students with the skills to become successful citizens in our community. The teachers add to this material with specific work to meet the needs of the students in their classrooms.

Homework Policy Education is a life-long process. It takes place in all environments – the home and community, as well as in school. Lake Nokomis Community School recognizes the need for a healthy balance between work and play for students. Realizing that all children have different capabilities, homework should allow a student to achieve his/her highest potential. To this end homework should:

1. Emphasize the partnership between home and school.

2. Develop a two-way communication which would update both teacher and parent on whether the student’s potential is being achieved.

3. Develop responsibility through time-management and through encouraging good work habits.

4. Allow the student opportunities for review, drill and practice of previously taught concepts.

5. Guide your child, but please let homework be an independent experience.

Teachers should periodically provide information for parents in assisting with homework. To the extent that we are successful in working together in this home/school partnership of educating our students, we will be successful in assisting each student to achieve his/her potential. The responsibility for success rests equally on both the home and the school. Students will have homework, especially in the areas of math and reading.

BE SAFE

• Keep hands, feet, and objects to self. • Walk at all times. • Report bullying and other unsafe behavior to staff.

OTHER STUDENT EXPECTATIONS Dress Code Make sure children are dressed appropriately for school. We realize that students are excited to wear the new fashions; however, many of the fashions these days are not acceptable dress for school. We want students to be aware of the dress requirements that have been instituted in our school and many others throughout Minneapolis.

1. Hats, hoods, and bandanas are not to be worn in the school building.

2. Coats and jackets must be kept in lockers. 3. Images and sayings on t-shirts must be appropriate for

school. 4. Clothing that is “too revealing” is not allowed. This

includes saggy pants, muscle shirts, bare midriffs, revealing tank tops, and short skirts/shorts.

5. Proper footwear suitable for athletic activity and recess is required. No slippers.

6. No flannel pajama bottoms or tops.

Thank you for discussing this information with your son or daughter. Students who forget or choose not to follow the dress requirements will be sent to the office to change into an appropriate outfit. Thank you for your support. Personal Items Electronic devices (I-pods, cell phones, Game Boys, etc.) are discouraged from being brought to school. Items may not be used during the school day. If used, they will be confiscated by staff and given to the school principal. Students who repeatedly misuse personal items in school will need to have a parent/guardian retrieve their property. Backpacks, purses, and all personal items (lotion, cologne hairbrushes, etc.) are to be stored in lockers during the day. They are not to be brought into the classroom or used in the hallway. All electronic devices must be stored in students own locked locker for the entire school day. Gum, candy, pop, sunflower seeds and other treats are not allowed at school unless prior approval has been given by staff. Such treats will be confiscated and thrown away. These items are also not permitted on any bus as regulated by the Transportation Department.

Autism We are fortunate to have two classes that provide specialized classes for students who have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The children in these classes spend part of their day in a small group setting and part of their day in the regular education classes with students their own age. These boys and girls are very much a part of our school community and we enjoy seeing them in our school.

Disability is a natural part of the human experience that does not diminish the right of individuals with developmental disabilities to enjoy the opportunity to live independently, enjoy self determination, make choices, contribute to society, and experience full integration and inclusion in the economic, political, social, cultural and educational mainstream of American Society. Autism teachers: Ms. Jennifer Stensrud

Ms. Elizabeth Van Gifted and Talented This program provides small groups of identified students with a time to explore the world around them and the relationships between the student and the 1) world of knowledge, 2) the world of self, and 3) society. These students are identified through a number of criteria including: staff and parent surveys, test scores on academic performance, test scores on measures of giftedness, and performance of creativity measures. The building G & T contact is Holly Kragthorpe-Shirley. ELL (English Language Learners) Approximately one-third of our student population speaks Spanish when they are at home. To help these students learn English, we have a teacher who is licensed in teaching students whose native language is not English. The students work in small groups either in the ELL room or in the regular education classroom. The teacher helps these students by teaching them the vocabulary that they hear in their lessons. Our ELL Teacher: Ms. Jessica Perez 612-668-4681 Our Spanish Interpreter: Ms. Maria Boland 612-668-4681

Social Work Support A social worker and other specially trained people provide groups for students who qualify on special topics such as family changes; making and keeping friends, peer mediation, helping families find counseling to deal with a crisis and grief after the death of a loved one. School staff or the student’s family may refer students for such groups by contacting the school social worker. Our Social Worker: Ms. Katie Klemme 612-668-4674. Special Education Special Education is available for students who have been identified with significant learning disabilities due to behavioral and emotional problems. Speech and language interventions are also available for students who need these services. A psychologist is available for consultation. Our Special Education Teachers are: Ms. Anne Benning (4th - 6th grade) Ms. Wendy Noakes (7th & 8th grade) Ms. Ann Shaw - Speech & Language Clinician Ms. Rachelle Bigler - Behavior Specialist (4th – 8th grade) TITLE I Title I is a program at Keewaydin that helps provide additional resources to meet the learning needs of students who do not qualify for any special programs, but need additional support to succeed. This program also stresses parent involvement in our schools. Watch for special events that ask parents to get involved with their child’s education. Keep informed about

how your child is doing in the academic areas of reading and math. The students who work with Title I teachers are closely monitored to assess their academic achievement. Locker Policy Students will be assigned a locker from their homeroom/first period teacher. Students will be required to pay a $5.00 deposit on a lock. You may personalize your locker on the inside only. Magnets or poster putty may be used to attach items. NO glue or tape. Lockers should be organized by using the top shelf for books, folders and school papers. The hooks are for backpacks and coats, and the bottom section is for shoes and sports equipment. Lockers will be periodically checked by staff members to ensure proper care and use of them. Students who damage lockers will be responsible for paying for the repair or replacement. The lockers are the property of Keewaydin School. The student assumes complete responsibility for all items in the locker and will have to reimburse the school for any damage to a locker or school materials taken from a locker. A locked locker can help prevent loss and theft. Please keep lockers locked at all times. We urge students not to share their locker combinations with friends.

Use of School Phone and Cell Phones Students may not use the school telephones unless they are given permission by a teacher. Telephone use should be limited to emergency situations only. Please take care of after school social arrangements the night before - not during school. Cell phones that are brought to school must be TURNED OFF and stored in lockers for the duration of school. We understand with today’s need for safety and connecting to families, cell phones are essential. We allow all students to turn on their cell phones immediately following dismissal at 4:05 p.m. which is when your student will be able to check any voice mail messages or texts you have sent them during the school day. Please support our school policy by sharing these policies with your family. Attendance The law requires a written note or phone call from the parents or guardian of a child if he/she has been or will be absent. Planned absences are to be cleared with the teacher and principal ahead of time. Our health assistant is required to call the home when we do not receive a call or note from a parent or guardian of an absent student. The district has adopted a policy that emphasizes 95% attendance by all students. 95% = 8 or less absences per year. Please have your children in school. Music lessons, dance lessons, babysitting and recitals are examples of inexcusable absences. To report absences call: Keewaydin Attendance Line– (612) 668-4678 Student hours: 9:40 am - 4:05 pm

Teacher hours: 8:30 am – 4:15 pm Building hours: 6:30 am – 6:30 pm

Do not bring your child to school before 9:25 a.m.

As there will be no supervision available.

Tardiness: Being on time is critical both at school and as a learned behavior for adults. The tardy policy at Keewaydin is as follows: students are allowed to be tardy three times. Whether arriving to school late or late to class our students must be prepared for learning every day. Leaving and Returning During the School Day We encourage parents to schedule doctor and dentist appointments on student release days or after school. Students who must leave before the end of the regular day must be signed out in the office. Parents are to wait in the office for their child to be sent from their classroom. Teachers DO NOT allow a student to leave their classroom with any adult or family member. The child must always be dismissed from the office. This will help with safety and security of our students. Only adults listed on a child’s emergency card will be allowed to pick up and have contact with students. Parents will be asked to sign their child back in if the child returns before the end of the same day.

Addresses and Telephone Numbers Let the school know if your telephone number or home addresses changes. Please notify the school office by phone or send a note to your child’s teacher with the updated information. It is very important that we know how to contact you in case of an emergency. Field Trips Classes take trips to different facilities in the community that correlate with our educational program. There is a minimal charge for these trips. Some scholarships are provided to students who cannot afford the cost of the trips. Contact your child’s homeroom teacher for more information. We do ask families to sign a general walking field trip slip due to our work and learning done directly in the community. Lost and Found Items found on the playground, bus or other spaces are placed in the Lost and Found Box. Money, jewelry or other valuable items found at school should be given to the teacher or school secretary.

Weather Bad Weather? Information concerning school closings is broadcast on WCCO-830. Listen for “Minneapolis Public Schools”- not individual school names. In case of severe weather, it may be necessary to excuse children early. Be sure your children know where to go if school is dismissed early.

Security As a part of Minneapolis Public School’s ongoing commitment to provide a secure environment for its students, the school maintains access-controlled entrances. Each campus conducts regular drills for fire, tornado/severe weather, lockdowns and other emergencies. We will have three emergency crisis drills throughout the school year. These drills are intended to help us be prepared for such emergencies as unwelcome intruders and emergency evacuation. Building Access The building outer doors are locked during the school day for security reasons. Please use our main entrance on 30th Avenue which requires you to be “buzzed” in. Upon entering you must go directly to the office, show identification and obtain a visitor badge.

Fire Drill Schedule We will have a total of five fire drills throughout the

course of the year. They will be spread throughout the day to provide evacuations from various places in school for all students. Teachers will have a copy of the directions for exiting the building using the nearest door posted by the door in each classroom.

Lockdown Drills Students will participate in 5 lockdown drills during

the year. These drills will allow students to practice where to go and what to do when they hear the announcements Code

Red, Yellow or Green. These drills teach your child to be safe in the event of an intruder in the building. Breakfast Procedures Breakfast hours are 9:20 – 9:40 am. The breakfast room is supervised only during this 20 minute time period. Students not wanting school breakfast are expected to eat prior to the start of the school day (9:40 am). There is NO charge for breakfast for any student. If a bus arrives late, students will always be permitted to eat before going to their classroom. Gum and Candy Gum, candy and other treats are not allowed at school without permission from your child’s classroom teacher. Such treats will be confiscated and thrown away. These items are also not permitted on any bus as regulated by the Transportation Department. Food in the Classroom The serving of food other than designated meal programs in school can be a worthwhile and rewarding experience. Special occasions lend themselves to the enjoyment of a variety of food in the classroom experience. The decision to serve food in the classroom will be made by the classroom teacher. This regulation does not obligate any class to serve food. Teachers are responsible for knowledge of students' health conditions, such as diabetes, allergies and dietary restrictions. The following guidelines are designed to help the teacher in making decisions regarding food:

• Food must be commercially prepared or prepared in an approved central place by a few persons instructed in the accepted techniques of food handling.

• When serving food, teachers must be aware of and implement personal hygiene practices (for example, a thorough soaping and washing of hands before eating).

• Suggested foods include apples, fruit, popcorn, fruit juice, and commercially prepared, individually wrapped ice cream products. Teachers will use common sense regarding the quantity and quality of food.

Allergy Aware Peanut safe; Indicates meal and snack selections served will not contain overt peanut ingredients such as peanuts, peanut butter, peanut oil, or tree nuts. Keewaydin is striving to be peanut safe. Please make sure our teachers, and health office is informed of potential food allergies. A separate lunch table is provided for students needing a safe place in the lunchroom. We ask that families at Lake Nokomis Community School please avoid bringing any peanut or tree nut products to school. Limiting Scented Products Keewaydin recognizes that scented products may trigger asthma or chemical sensitivity reactions in students and school staff. We ask for your help in such areas: limiting the amount of cologne or strongly scented lotions you wear, minimize aerosol product usage, and no scented markers or stickers. Cologne and perfume may not be applied in hallways during the school day. Exposure to scented products has been associated with eye and respiratory system problems in individuals. Thank you.

School Patrols School Patrols are assigned to corners near the school in order to protect the safety of students who walk to school. The interest in school patrol has increased two fold over the last two years. Ms. Rivard-Johnson is our patrol coordinator. Please send your child to school only when patrols are on duty: 9:20 – 9:40am and from 4:10 – 4:20pm. Sending Money to School There are a number of occasions when you will be sending money to school: lunch/milk money, student pictures, school store, class field trips, etc. This money should be placed in a small envelope printed with the child’s name, room number and amount enclosed.

Bike Policy Students may ride their bikes to school at their own risk. Bikes may be locked next to the playground and along the back parking lot walkway. Students must provide their own locks. We strongly encourage the use of helmets.

Health Services Health services are limited to a health assistant and a part-time nurse. They are here for record keeping and emergencies only. Health concerns should be addressed with your family physician. Please keep your child home if they show any symptoms of illness such as nausea, fever, diarrhea, sore throat, rash, etc. until you can determine how serious the condition may be.

This will help reduce the spread of infections throughout the school. Call the Keewaydin Health Office at 612-668-4678 to report your child’s absence. Please contact the school health assistant or teacher early in the year if your child has a medical problem, such as a heart condition, hearing or vision problem, etc. so that this information can be recorded on your child’s health record and procedures for managing the condition can be used in working with your child. Notify the office or teacher of any changes in your child’s health status. Immunizations Minnesota State Law requires full immunizations for all school children. Please keep a permanent record of your child’s immunizations and send updated information to school. Students must show proof of compliance by the first day of school or they will not be allowed to start. No Shots = No School.

Medication According to Minneapolis Public Schools’ policy, medication will be administered only in exceptional cases when failure to take the prescribed medicine will be detrimental to a child’s health. Any medication administered by school personnel requires a completed Medication Consent Form signed by a physician and parent. Short-term medications, such as antibiotics, usually can be taken before and after the school day when the child is at home.

Sports Physicals Minneapolis Public Schools requires all students who wish to participate in a school sport to have a sports physical form on file. The form is available in the school office or on the MPS website under “Athletics – Forms.” Physicals must be renewed every three years. Student Rights Regarding Homelessness and High Mobility If your family is staying in an emergency shelter, temporarily doubled up, or moving frequently, you may be considered homeless or highly mobile by law. Let the School Social Worker (612-668-4674) know this. If your family is homeless or highly mobile, your child has a right to:

• Immediately enroll in school. • Continue at the same school if transportation is feasible. • Attend special programs and afterschool activities. • Automatically qualify for free lunch at school. • Have free school supplies. • Receive needed services as all other students.

When enrolling your child in school, you do not need to immediately provide:

• Proof of residency • Immunization records • Birth certificate • Previous school records
