DFM ANNOUNCEMENTS

Congratulations to Jeffrey Tiemstra, MD and Nandini Khatkhate, MD, on the publication of their article, “Bell’s Palsy: Diagnosis and Manage-ment” in the American Family Physician published on October, 1st, 2007. The full article can be viewed at http://www.aafp.org/afp/20071001/997.html.

Nandini Khatkhate, MD was quoted in a Chicago Sun Times article entitled, “Birth Control Costs Soaring at Colleges” printed on August 13th, 2007. The full article is available at http://www.suntimes.com/news/metro/517061,CST-NWS-birth20.article.

Congratulations to 3rd year Resident Katina Bonaparte, MD, MPH on receiving a full scholarship to attend the American Association of Reproductive Health Professionals annual conference on Reproductive Health. The scholarship awarded Dr. Bonaparte with an all expense paid trip to attend the con-ference held from September 26-29, 2007 in Minneapolis, MN.

Congratulations to Abbas Hyderi, MD, MPH, Katina Bonaparte, MD, MPH, and medical student Bi Ade on the acceptance of their presentation proposal, entitled “Integrating Residents into Clerkship Teaching: A Strategy for Promoting Family Medicine”, to the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine’s 34th Annual Predoctoral Education Conference. The conference will be held January 24-27, 2008 in Portland, OR.

Over the past months, the DFM has had the pleasure of acknowledging two of our faculty in per-forming outstanding acts of heroism. The DFM is extremely proud to have Drs. Sonia Oyola and Abbas Hyderi as UIC Family Physicians. In August, Sonia Oyola, MD demonstrated what being a physician is all about, helping someone in need. While on a run along the lakefront , Dr. Oyola administered CPR to another runner who had collapsed along the path. Thanks to her quick thinking, current BLS certification, and skill, the runner was resuscitated, taken to the hospital, un-derwent surgery, and recovered.

On Monday, October 9th, Abbas Hyderi, MD, MPH also displayed quick thinking in the face of a medical emergency. While driving, he noticed a car moving erratically and witnessed it slowly drive into another vehicle. Dr. Hyderi stopped his vehicle and rushed to help the driver who appeared in distress. He started CPR and stayed until the ambulance arrived. Thanks to Dr. Hyderi’s quick thinking and calm action, the driver is recovering and doing well.

Jeffrey Tiemstra, MD completed his 19th consecutive Chicago Marathon on Sunday, October 7th, 2007. Prior to the marathon, Dr. Tiemstra shared his tips for a success run in a Chicago Sun-Times article entitled “Born to Run”. Congratulations to Dr. Tiemstra on this outstanding accomplishment.

Congratulations to Maria Devens, Ph.D. for achieving Board Certification in Clinical Health Psychology. Dr. Devens is one of only 101 Board Certified Clinical Health Psychologists in the US, Only 5% of all practicing psychologists who are members of the American Psychological Association have achieved ABPP Board Certification. The process was long and difficult, but Dr. Devens per-sisted. The DFM is honored to have her on our family medicine team.

FALL 2007 MVTP

Congratulations to Shelby Johnson, MA University Village, Pink Team, who has been chosen to be recognized as the Fall 2007 DFM Most Valuable Team Player. Shelby was nominated by several people who made the following com-ments about her: Shelby has good rapport with patients, remains calm in the face of a busy day, anticipates what the practitioner with whom she is working might need, and is thorough and complete in her docu-mentation. She works well with other team members and is an integral part of the pink team! I support's Shelby's nomination for MVP this quarter. I appreciated Shelby's thoroughness in screening patients, kindness to coworkers and patients and efficiency. She is pleasant to deal with and always keeps her cool. Calm, cool and collected. Shelby is where you need her, when you need her and always willing to help. Has anyone ever heard Shelby say "no"??? No one need double check on Shelby, if she says it will be done, it will ... usually, one needn't even ask because she just has it done already. She is quiet and efficient and very respected. Let's not mention her humility ... I bet she's busying herself somewhere right now to avoid this very, very deserved limelight!

Congratulations Shelby and thank you for your outstanding service to the DFM and UIC!

Tamarah Duperval, MD, MPH has been selected as a 2008 American Marshall Memorial Fellow. The Mar-shall Memorial Fellowship pro-vides a unique opportunity for emerging leaders from the United States and Europe to explore societies, institutions, and people on the other side of the Atlantic. The German Mar-shal Fund awards more than

100 Marshall Memorial Fellowships each year to lead-ers in politics, government, business, media, and the nonprofit sector from twenty countries, who are com-mitted to strengthening the transatlantic relationship. Congratulations to Dr. Duperval on this amazing honor.
