Small screen bosses are working on a new series cal- led Gotham, which will tell the story of Police Commiss- ioner James Gordon and will be set long before Bat- man turns up to save the city from bad guys. It is believed the Caped Crusader himself, who will be played by Ben Affleck in a new movie, will not fea- ture in the show, which will be broadcast on the Ameri- can Fox network. Gordon was previously played by Gary Oldman in Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy, while Pat Hingle played him in four previous films and Neil Hamilton held the role in 1960s TV series Batman, all based on the DC Comics. It is not known if the show will air in Australia. Believers missing LONDON: Charlotte Chur- ch’s attempt to relaunch herself as a rock singer has hit rock bottom — her con- cert in Manchester, England on Monday was attended by fewer than 100 fans. Just 75 people turned up for the gig at Manchester’s Academy 3 as the former child star showcased her new prog-rock sound, and the lowly turnout has spar- ked rumours her attempt to reinvent herself as a cred- ible artist is crumbling. Editors at the Manchester Evening News reported Church closed the show by telling the cosy group of audience members: ‘‘Thanks for coming out tonight. Ob- viously what I’m doing now is a bit different so thank you for your support.’’ Kids kept in dark LOS ANGELES: Foo Figh- ters’ Dave Grohl is refusing to tell his children how Nirvana frontman Kurt Cobain died as they are too young to cope with it. The rocker has two daughters — Violet, 7, and Harper, 4 — who know he was in a band with Cobain, but he is determined to shield them from his former bandmate’s grisly death. He tells Rolling Stone: ‘‘They know I was in Ni- rvana. They know Kurt was killed. I haven’t told them that he killed himself. So when they listen to (Ni- rvana’s classic album) In Utero, they’ll have that fresh perspective — the original intention of the album, as a first-time listener.’’ Cobain died from a self- inflicted gunshot wound at his home in 1994. Fans go One Direction PERTH: Mad scenes followed the arrival of boy band One Direction in Perth overnight, with a small group of fans in- timidated by security guards as they tailed their idols. The teenage heart-throbs landed in the West Austral- ian capital at 1.30am (WST) and were immediately spir- ited away in a convoy of three heavily tinted vans. The die-hard groupies — many driven by their moth- ers — reportedly pursued the band through several red lights on the Great East- ern Highway. Bizarrely, the convoy pulled into a servo. Freelance pho- tographer Bohdan Warchomij said security guards then photographed the fans in a bid to intimidate them. ‘‘They couldn’t shake them and thought ‘there must be another way out of this’ and adopt plan B,’’ he told Fairfax radio yesterday. ‘‘I think it was just security intimidat- ion. Certainly with me, they tried to get me to move on.’’ The band were then whis- ked to James Packer’s Crown Casino, avoiding the main en- trance and also their fans. Meanwhile, One Direction have been crowned Billboard magazine’s most powerful pop stars under 21. Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlin- son and Zayn Malik topped the US magazine’s annual 21 Under 21 list, which ranks the young artists based on factors such as music sales, touring and social media in- fluence. Justin Bieber trails in second place, while Miley Cyrus is at three, followed by Ariana Grande and rapper Earl Sweatshirt in fourth and fifth place, respectively. Scotty McCreery, Austin Mahone, Cody Simpson, British singer Cher Lloyd and hip-hop star Chief Keef are also featured on the new countdown. Sandra Bullock poses at her hand and foot ceremony, where her prints will be immortalised in cement in Hollywood Hey mum, haven’t you been told not to play in mud LOS ANGELES: Oscar win- ner Sandra Bullock made her mark in Hollywood by adding her foot and handprints to the cement outside world- famous tourist attraction the TCL Chinese Theatre. The Speed star planted her hands and feet in wet cement outside the landmark, with her Gravity co-star George Clooney and comedian pal Chelsea Handler on hand for support. Bullock rought along her three-year-old son Louis to witness her big day, but she in- sists the tot won’t be a regular fixture at Hollywood events. She told E! News: ‘‘No events. This is the only one. He usually hates these types of things but this is a big one because of the history of this event. I hope if he has memor- ies of anything, it’s some- thing like this.’’ And she told the crowd that the print ceremony really was all for him, adding: ‘‘This way, when he’s 16 and he hates me, I can take him to this moment and say, ‘Look, people said really nice things about your mother’.’’ Hunting down extra venues SYDNEY: Hunters & Col- lectors have expanded their reunion with more A Day On The Green shows from January.
