When a winter storm arrives, how will you know if Meals on Wheels is closed?
Turn on your television. When a big storm blows into the Grand Valley, and roads become unsafe,
Meals on Wheels may announce an emergency closure of our dining sites and home-delivered meals.
The decision is made based on the weather forecast, road conditions, and our desire to keep our
volunteers safe at all times. We want you to know about a closure as soon as possible. So, when you
get up in the morning and notice a lot of fresh snow, tune into a local TV station – KREX (channel 5),
KJCT (channel 8), or KKCO (channel 11) – and watch for Meals on Wheels’ announcement. If we are
closed for the day, the morning news teams will communicate the message.
***This will be time when you would need to use your Blizzard Box, if you have no other food to eat.***

Fats Fat sometimes gets a bad rap. The truth is your body needs fat. Fat is used as a fuel
source and of course is the major storage site of energy. It helps support cell growth
and protects your organs from injury. Fats also help your body absorb nutrients and
hormones. The problem with fat, is that sometimes we eat to much or we eat the
wrong kind. That is when fat becomes harmful instead of helpful. There are different
kinds of fats. Monounsaturated fats are good fats when eaten in moderation. They
lower bad cholesterol and are found in olive oil, canola oil, peanuts and avocados.
Polyunsaturated fats are also good fats and help reduce bad cholesterol and
increase good cholesterol. They are found in soybeans, corn oil and sunflower oil.
Saturated fats are not healthy fats and increase bad cholesterol. They are found in
fatty meat, lard, whole milk butters, cream and coconut oil. Trans fats are vegetable
fats that are hydrogenated to become solid and are the worst kinds of fats to eat.
They not only increase bad cholesterol but also reduce good cholesterol. Trans fats
are found in many prepared foods and should be avoided. Knowing your fats and
how they affect your body will help you make great choices for healthy living!

Uncluttering to Find Joy
I am the only child of an only child which means I am the sole heir of my parents’ and
grandparents’ treasures. So many things - important to others - have come my way. I have
experienced a wide array of feelings toward these things, including: 10 large moving boxes
full of unlabeled photos, letters written between my parents, hundreds of random cuff links,
records, and unclaimed wedding rings. I am both the queen of clean when I find these things
homes and the princess of procrastination when I get overwhelmed.
The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up on Netflix is based on the “KonMari” method of organizing your home by Marie Kondo. KonMari teaches us to ask a simple question of each item when tidying, “does this spark joy?” If not, thank it for its contribution then get rid of it. This seems easy, but what is the best way to KonMari an entire home? I have been tackling a room a month. This has allowed me to procrastinate making decisions about items by simply moving them to another room. Not a great way to make progress! The KonMari method suggests that you tidy all rooms at once. In my case, I would need to work for a month straight, which is way too daunting. Instead, Marie Kondo suggests decluttering by category. The categories are: 1) Clothes 2) Books 3) Papers 4) Komono (miscellaneous stuff) and 5) Sentimental. This seems more manageable to me. For example, when tackling Clothing, gather all clothing in your entire home and ask each item the magic question –“does this spark joy in me?” If we look in our closets and garages we likely have “someday” possessions: “someday I will need this item,” “someday I’ll have a special occasion,” and even “someday my kids will want it.” When was the last time you needed any of these items? How much of the scenery is really clutter? Maybe it’s time to create your special occasion or find the things a new home. According to Marie Kondo, possessions are stripped of their dignity when they go unused. The positive thing to do is to thank them and let them go. I sort the items that spark no joy into 3 piles: toss, donate or designate (to friends or family). The KonMari method is a great guide to declutter your home but you have to find what works best for you. Have a tip for sorting or decluttering? Do you have an idea for storing kid’s stuff? Share the Love with Vulnerable Seniors This Year Exciting news! For the 12th year running, the Meals on Wheels network is participating in the 2019 Subaru Share the Love Event. Over the past eleven years, Subaru and its retailers have helped Meals on Wheels to deliver more than 2.2 million meals nationwide to seniors in need. Why does Subaru support Meals on Wheels? Too many seniors are struggling to stay independent and healthy. One in four seniors lives alone in isolation and one in seven seniors might not know from where their next meal is coming. This is simply unacceptable, which is why Meals on Wheels Mesa County provides the nutritious meals, friendly visits and safety checks to the seniors of Mesa County. This vital support keeps seniors in their own homes, where they want to be. We’re incredibly grateful to Subaru and its Retailers for supporting our organization and the seniors we serve. With that in mind, we thought you might want to learn a little bit more about the Subaru Share the Love Event. HERE’S HOW IT WORKS This November 14, 2019, through January 2, 2020, for every new Subaru vehicle purchased or leased, Subaru will donate $250 to the customer’s choice of participating charities.* Meals on Wheels is one of four national participating charities and has been since the inception of the event. Through this event, as a member of Meals on Wheels America, Meals on Wheels Mesa County will receive a share of the donation from Subaru vehicles sold at participating Subaru Retailers.
