It Was a Quick-Time Concrete Pour For Roof of Indianapolis Water Storage Facility

Utilizing four concrete pu mps, fed by 52 ready mix trucks, and finished by an abundant crew, the roof slab of a four

million-gallon clean water storage tank was placed in four hours and finished within a seven-hour period .

The concrete pour took place at a $14 million drinking water treatment facility being constructed for the Indianapolis Water Department on the city's south side.

Genera l contrac tor Hagerman Construction Co., Fort Wayne and Indianapolis, called on R. L. McCoy's India napolis office to place the 1,280 cubic yards of concrete for the 42,OOO-square-foot slab. •

McCoy's Gary Brown strategically placed three Schwing 1200/ 42-meter

concrete pumps and a 1200/36-meter pump around the base of the tank to adequately cover the heavily-reinforced slab . Another Schwing 1200/32-meter pump, was standing by in reserve.

"We started at 5:30 a.m. and finished at 9:30, ahead of Hagerman superint endent Brian Hoeppner 's estimated deadline of a 10 a.m. pour completion," Brown said. All the pumps were washed and off site before 11 a.m.

"That calcu lates to placing 320 yards an hour on average, and 80 yards per hour per machine, pumping at about half-capacity," the McCoy superintend ent noted, adding that this was McCoy's fifth single pour requiring more than 1,100yards

on this project. The weather and scheduling were

both perfect for the concrete operation.

Concrete supplier Prairie Group was requ ired to put 400 yards an hour on the job, however, during the first half-hour produced just 160 yards to get all systems worked out, then increased to 400 yards hourly.

Then a steady stream of read y-mix trucks rotated from and to Prairie's plant on Kentuck y Ave., about 10 miles distant from the jobsite. A map of the routing system to points around the tank were supplied to the dr ivers who were directed to pumps as neede d .

Prairie 's computerized scheduling dictated that the 52 trucks would be needed to maintain the required production of 400 yards hourly. "By 7:30 a.m. they basically had everything batched , or in the sequence of being batched," Brown explained .

"By 8 a.m., Prairie had 1,000 yards batch ed and we had 900 yards on the deck. The remainder was either

between the plant and the job, or on the jobsite," the McCoy superintenden t added.

Prairie Group's general manager, Gary Matney, praised all of Prairie's

employees for their effort. "Things like this do not just happen," he said. "To get 400 yards an hour out of one facility takes a great deal of planning and execution.

"One of the features we try to sell is the advantage of mass concrete coming out of one production facility. If you can produce the quantity, the quality and consistency are an added bonus," Matney added.

Hagerman's on-site superintenden t Hoeppner pointed out that the roof slab, as well as the walls of the huge tank, would be post-tensioned after the pour. This is one of two structures on site which are post-tensioned.

The other, a 58-foot-diameter sup ply tank that will stand 28 feet high, will be constructed after the reservoir is complete.

"On the base slab we used vibratory screeds, but found that it didn't work as well as we hoped," Hoeppner noted. "We decided that on the roof slab, where we have WIO

feet of fall from one side to the other, we would go with all hand -strike.

R. L. McCoy superintendent Gary Braum, right, discusses pour progress. "We will chemically cure it with a

hydro-cure material tonight , and because of frost warn ings, we will probably blanket the anchor points around the per imeter," Hoeppner added, because initial stressing was scheduled to begin around noon the next day.

The Ind ianapolis Water Co. project

received ' its first concrete pour on August 13 last year, and by the time it's completed, will have a total of 15,800 cubic yards placed under this contract, which is scheduled for completion July 1 this year.

"We lost about 30 days through the win ter because of the cold," the project superintendent said, "but other

than that we poured concrete all through the winter utilizing winter protection methods dictated by the American Concrete Institute man ual. A liquidated-damage clause in the contract dictated that we pour during the win ter," he added.

A production well field to supply the plant with water is scheduled to be installed from the project site east to SR37. There will be seven production wells which will be tied into the plant for treatment and distr ibution from that point.

"Eventuallv this facilitv will have< ,

the capacity to pump 48 million gallons of water per day," Hoeppner said.

"The Water Company is talking abou t constructing another four-million-gallon reservoir at the site, adjacent to the existing one, with future expansion planned for three other structures as well," he concluded.•
