Service Honoring Harvey Browne Members Age 90+
For period September 1—30, 2019
Mailing Date: August 29, 2019
I grew up in a small rural Baptist church just east of Lexington. We never missed Sunday morning
Sunday School and Worship, Sunday night Bible Study and Worship and Wednesday night Prayer
Meeting. You planned your other activities around this schedule. When I was young I was really into
horses and participated in horse shows almost every weekend. Some of these were on Sunday. The few
times that my parents let me do one of these shows we would load up the trailer with two horses and
go to Sunday School and then leave to head to the show. We didn’t stay for worship which back then
was called “staying for preaching!”
The motivation for this type of commitment is hard to explain but it is easy to explain from the
perspective of a young kid like me in the 60’s. Guilt. If I didn’t make the church the number one priority
I felt guilty. And there was always the prospect of those flames that might engulf me in the afterlife.
Beth has a customer who buys flowers from here at the farmer’s market. He only comes a few times
during the season but he always buys a bouquet for his daughter in law and the pays for Beth’s next
customer to get one for free. It’s called paying it forward. A couple of weeks ago he came and did this
and each time the person learned they were the recipient of this generosity they too would pay it
forward. I found it interesting that there were different motivations for continuing to pay it forward.
Most of the young women responding by enthusiastically embracing this idea. They really believed this
was a worthy thing to do and they wanted to be a part of it. Many others, often of my generation, also
wanted to continue it but you could tell that they were motivated more by something different. Often
they would say. “Oh, I can’t accept that. I’ll have to do it too.” Guilt.
As we start up our new “Program Year” you are going to be asked to make some commitments. Come
to Sunday School and Worship each week. Participate in Wednesday night activities. Be involved in
mission projects and other outreach ministries. Bring your children to activities planned for them. And
come October, make a financial commitment to help continue the ministry of Harvey Browne.
Of course I hope that you will consider getting involved in the Music Ministry. Finally, you are going to
take the risk to come sing or play in one of our ensembles. You are going to support the children and
youth ministries by bringing your kids on Wednesday night for all the wonderful opportunities afforded
them for spiritual and musical growth.
I hope you will do this out of a sense of commitment to “Making a Difference by Making Disciples” here
at HBPres. But, as Beth found out with her flowers, guilt works too. And in the end, the goal is achieved.
Hope to see ya this fall.

Deacons—the Fall Retreat is Saturday, September 21, 2019 from
10:00 AM-12:00 noon in Eline Hall. The guest speaker will be our own

Deacons. If you cannot attend, please call Lynn Cole at 491-5337 and
let her know.
Plans for the “90 Plus Celebration” on Sunday, September 29 are well
underway. HBPres members who are 90 years of age or older will be

Emory Hall. If you would like to help with this reception, please call
Lynn Cole. All HBPres members are encouraged to attend.
Deacons who have not contacted their flock to introduce themselves,
please do so. It is important that members know who their Deacon is

Proverbs 12:25
It is time to recruit acolytes for the next church year! All third through
fifth graders are encouraged to participate as an acolyte on Sunday
mornings at the 10:30 worship service. An acolyte lights the candles at
the beginning of the service and then extinguishes them at the end. If
you were an acolyte in the past we hope you will continue.
If you have never been an acolyte before, don’t worry, we will teach
you. I will meet with you and your family on a Sunday or a Wednesday
night prior to the Sunday you are scheduled. Also, the tweens will meet
after church on September 8 at 11:30 AM after worship, where we can
also go over instructions there as well.
You will be expected to light the candles and extinguish when you are
scheduled, or to find a substitute. (Names and phone numbers will be
on the schedule). The schedule comes out about four times a year.
Please call, talk to me at church, or e-mail Julie Rousseau, to let me
know if you will or will not be an acolyte this year. Also, if you have any
questions, please let me know. We look forward to hearing from you.
Sincerely,
Julie Rousseau

This study introduces the creed by discussing the
meaning of its phrases. To recognize what the
phrases mean and ways they have been understood in
our Reformed theological tradition is to move more
deeply into our faith. The Creed’s meanings can
strengthen our understanding, deepen our devotion,
and give a vision for Christian living and action in the
church and the world.

New participants are welcomed as a new season begins
on Monday, September 16. This class is open to Harvey
Browne members and the community at large. Bring a
friend.
Tai Chi is practiced throughout the world for its many
health benefits. It strengthens and mobilizes joints and
muscles, improving physical fitness and mental relaxa-
tion. It is especially suitable as a therapy for arthritis
because its movements are slow and gentle, and the
level of exertion can be adjusted to suit each person’s
physical condition.
A recent presentation on NPR-Weekend Edition
discussed simple ways to prevent falls in older adults.
Dr. Elizabeth Eckstrom, of Oregon talked about the
advantages of Tai Chi over just walking. “Walking is
great for your heart: it’s great for your brain; it’s great
for a lot of things. But in order to really reduce your
risk for falls, you’ve got to do something specific to
improve balance. Tai Chi gives you an increased area of
postural stability (your being able to remain upright in
space).”
In Tai Chi, we move forward and backwards, side to
side, moving arms out, reaching and bending. All of this
increases your ability to stay upright. Movements are
slow and continuous and suitable for all ages. Attire is
comfortable clothes and supportive shoes.
Tai Chi for Arthritis and Fall Prevention classes are
available on Monday mornings at 11:00 AM in the Loft.
Nancy Pollock is a certified Tai Chi for Health instruc-
tor. Contact her at: [email protected] or
502-458-6413 with any questions.
The cause is unknown & there is no cure.
Although there is no cure at this time, treatment
options vary & can include medication & surgery.
People with Parkinson’s can have
a good quality of life.
No two people have the same exact symptoms:
The progression of symptoms is often different from
one person to another due to the diversity of the
disease.
Non-movement symptoms can be more
troublesome than motor symptoms:
They can include cognitive changes, mood disorders,
fatigue, hallucinations & delusions
Small handwriting & loss of smell
are early signs of Parkinson’s.
Exercise helps manage the symptoms:
Exercise is vital to maintaining balance,
mobility and activities of daily living.
Parkinson’s should be treated through
a team approach.
We must improve treatment.
People with Parkinson’s are not
always angry or sad!
Often, people look serious, depressed or mad, but many
times the disease is causing facial masking, where
muscles in the face are stiff or take a long time to move.
Thank you to everyone who was able to donate blood on Monday, July 15

We have had a wonderful start to the school year and are thrilled to welcome so many new families to
Harvey Browne Preschool. It is truly a blessing to be surrounded each day by such bright, excited smiling
little faces.
Thanks to the hard work of Tim and his entire crew our classrooms look clean and cheerful. The
Kindergarten classroom floors have been painted and are beautiful. They were even ready two weeks
ahead of schedule allowing the teachers more time to decorate and add their special touches in
preparation of the new school year. Incredible!
We are very excited about the programs and activities already underway.
We want to extend our thanks to Terry Hargrave for her continuing guidance and support. Our Chapel
time begins this month and is focused on “Sharing God’s Love through our Friends and Creation”. One
area of focus with the children will be connecting God’s love with an action such as helping others. Ideas
that we are working on include bringing in a toothbrush/toothpaste for Presbyterian Disaster Relief,
sharing new or gently used toys for Wayside Mission at Christmas or bringing canned goods for Souper
Bowl Sunday.
Our Parent Involvement Committee will be meeting soon to kick-off planning for this year’s Preschool
mission projects, fundraisers and different activities for parents to become more closely connected to
Harvey Browne. These will include two family-friendly Wednesday night programs—one in the fall and
one in the winter.
Occupational Therapy and Speech Screenings will begin early this month as we continuously work to
meet the needs of all children in an inclusive classroom and school environment. Hearing and vision
screening swill take place later this fall. We are also adding the services of a Behavioral Support Specialist
to serve as a resource to teachers and families.
We are also excited to offer many optional programs including Literacy Enrichment for 4’s and
Kindergarten as well as a STEM enrichment class for 4’s. These are hands on, experiential learning
enrichment classes in the afternoon that provide even more opportunities beyond the morning school
hours.
On behalf of the entire Preschool staff and parents we want to thank you again for your patience with
carpool during the first few weeks of school as parents were getting the hang of the process. We also
appreciate your understanding of the added building security measures taken during school hours. We
know that closure of certain doors may be an inconvenience at times and are grateful for your
willingness to help us keep the building, staff, and children secure.
Wishing everyone a glorious fall!
In Christ,
The Preschool Board

Presbyterian women are now preparing for the Kick Off Luncheon to be held on
Tuesday, September 10 at 10:30 AM. The speaker to begin our Bible Study for the
upcoming year is Rev. Janice Catron, and our meal will be catered by Kathy Darby.
Mary Alice Grover will be taking reservations ($10 per person) on Sunday,
September 1, but you may also call her at (502-454-4317). Evening circles will meet
at 6:00 PM for a potluck salad supper and kickoff program.
This project is one of those chosen to receive grants from the Thank Offering of
Presbyterian Women. Rural health facilities in Cameroon are often not sufficiently
equipped with supplies to cater to pregnant and postpartum clients. Hospitals
receive patients, especially pregnant women, who are unable to afford the cost of
care. The Presbyterian Church in Cameroon hospitals are no exception. The Thank
Offering grant will support obstetric units in Cameroon’s hospitals with modern
blood banks; training for laboratory staff, nurses, midwives, gynecologists & general
practitioners; and purchase of supplies.

After much delay the memorial garden in front of the church is finally finished! A big thanks to Rick
Williams who arranged for the completion of this culminating feature of Harvey Browne’s centennial
celebration.
One reason for the delay was the discovery of a crack that allowed water to seep into the burial vault
just as we were about to inter the first ashes in the memorial garden. A new vault was buried in the
ground and a beautiful piece of granite placed above it, inscribed with spaces for the names of those
whose ashes will be buried. All of this took much longer than anticipated and required expansion of the
original garden.
A bronze plaque has also been added to the base of the cross, which reads: “The centennial sculpture
symbolizes the faith we share as individuals and the community of faith that we have formed together
for more than 100 years. The memorial garden represents God’s magnificent creation and honors those
who have been part of this community of faith.”
Four families are currently waiting to have their loved ones interred at Harvey Browne. A pamphlet
explaining what that entails is in the works for those who may wish to consider this option for their
own family members.
A couple of rules apply. Burial in the garden is restricted to church members and their families. Persons
wishing to bury ashes must sign a form stating that they understand the ashes will be commingled with
other ashes and cannot be retrieved.
The session has approved a price for burial of $700, payable at the time of internment. The price
includes a permanent marker engraved with the name of the deceased and dates for birth and death.
