THURSDAY 22nd FEBRUARY 2018
Dear Families,
Tonight is our Parent Information Night commencing at
7.00p.m. in the multi-purpose room. This is an evening for all
families from Prep – Year 6. The structure of the evening will
be a general presentation from me regarding school curriculum, policy
development and physical developments for 2018. This presentation will take
about twenty minutes.
Parents will then go to the classroom that their child is in for a presentation
from the teacher regarding the organisation, curriculum and structures for
that room in 2018. As I have said in previous newsletters if you have children
in more than one class then you will need to have a parent in each of those
classes. We plan for the evening to be over by 8.00p.m.
This is an evening for parents and as such we ask that babysitting
arrangements be made where possible.
Student Absences
Following a review by the Minister for Education all schools must, from 30th
January 2018, contact a parent as soon as is practicable if there is an
unexplained absence of a student. Obviously this action has been taken to
help ensure the safety of school-aged children during school hours.
In order for this to work effectively for our school I ask that if your child is
going to be away please go to our website and complete the Report an
Absence form on the website. This will make life a lot easier for Nicole (our
Office Manager) because she will be the one who will have to make these
follow up calls and as we all know Nicole is already very busy with all the
other aspects of her role.
School Cross Country
Next Mon day we will be conducting our School Cross Country in the parkland
opposite the school. All classes will participate in a Cross Country run and all
children are expected to participate, our school cross country is not about
being the best it is about all children participating. Our Sport & Recreation
Leaders will conduct the event.
All children from Prep- Year 6 are asked to wear their sports uniform next
Monday. Following the Cross Country we will organise training sessions for
the inter-school Cross Country which is scheduled for Monday 30th April.
Swimming Practice
Currently we have quite a number

Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings from 8-8.30a.m. then they

Clean Up Australia Day 2nd March
On Friday 2nd March we will be conducting Clean Up Australia Day here at St. John Vianney’s. We would like
all children to assist with this by wearing their Sports Uniform, bringing some gardening gloves and perhaps
a gardening hand tool. We will allocate various areas of the school grounds to each class to undertake a
clean up.
Andrew Chin Family Concert
Andrew Chin is a performer who teaches children contemporary religious songs which they can use during
paraliturgies and prayer services. He is most entertaining and children really enjoy his music.
Andrew will be at school on Monday 5th March working with all classes teaching them songs and movements
that they can use. In the evening at 7.00p.m. he will perform a concert, with the assistance of our children, in
the St.John Vianney’s Church.
We invite all families to join us in the Church from 7.00p.m., the concert will run for approximately 1 hour.
SJV Open Days for 2019 Enrolments
Even though the 2018 school year has only just begun we are already looking at our Enrolment Program for
2019. We have planned 2 Open days at this stage:
Monday 5th March and Wednesday 14th March please see the Enrolment Poster attached to this newsletter
with details re booking a spot for the Open Days.
As you know we are trying to build our enrolments, so if you know of anyone who has a Prep child or any
other year level for 2019 encourage them to come and have a look at SJV. As a Catholic School we offer
enrolment places firstly to children of catholic families and then if space is available we offer places to
children of non- catholic families.
Canberra Camp Yr.6’s 2018
We have just completed the organisation of a Year 6 Camp to Canberra which will be instituted this year
from 12th-16th November. This will be the first time that we have had a camp to Canberra and it is planned to
be an annual event for the Year 6 class.
SJV Kitchen Gardens
Following our wonderful Working Bee last year and some careful preparation by our Sustainability Leaders,
Fleur Peppard, Gabbi Davoren and Danny Benoiten our children have begun planting in the boxes today.
Check out the photos in this newsletter of our active “green thumbs.”

Answer to Chess Puzzle: Black (Will) has just taken Alex's Rook on f1, and White (Alex) took the rook back playing the move Kxf1 which is a good move. But there was a better move. White could have taken on f7 with Bishop Checkmate This square is called the WEAK SPOT and is where more Checkmates or tricks happen than any other square on the board!
