Principal’s Report It’s a very exciting week with only 2 sleeps to go until our Fete! This will be the best Twilight Fete that Glen Huntly Primary has ever master minded.

Just check out this program of events and a big thankyou to the wonderful work of so many coordinators and people assisting in so many ways from the GHPS and wider community.

There will be lot happening in the next couple of days and I can’t wait to see everyone enjoying themselves on Saturday. Don’t forget: Last reminder for the wrist band deal!

Curriculum Day On Monday 6th November (week 5) there will be the final curriculum day for this year. A notice has been sent home on Tuesday 24th October.

Interschool Chess Congratulations to all of our fabulous chess students who qualified to represent GHPS at the Interschool Tournament at Wesley on Monday 17th October.

Jennifer, 4K, was awarded Best Girl of the tournament and our students had a very successful day, finishing second, and will now go on to the Semi-Finals, which will be held tomorrow! We are very proud of your achievement so far and Good Luck!!

Cabaret Photos Last orders for the wonderful photos taken during the Cabaret which are on display brightening up the school office.

Orders for photos will close next Tuesday 31st October at 3.45pm.

Thank you to Julie for getting the photo orders sorted and I’m sure everyone will enjoy having a lasting memory of the 2017 Cabaret.

2018 If any families will be relocating house next year, but haven’t let us know yet that they will be moving, can you please notify the office straight away so that we can factor this into workforce planning and student organisation.

School Council Report School Council met for the 1st time in term 4 on Monday 23rd of October.

Key items presented and discussed were;

Fete update – I’m sure no-one needs reminding it’s the big day on Saturday and the weather at this stage is looking good (I know everyone will have their fingers crossed). There are still plenty of opportunities for the whole school community to help so if you haven’t already done so please sign up as a helper as the success of the day will now come down to having enough people to man the wide variety of stalls and activities. The entire fete organising team has done an absolutely outstanding job in pulling this year’s fete together so please make sure you get behind it by helping where you can, and coming and spending some money on the day.

Current enrolments for 2018 are looking very healthy with currently 53 preps scheduled to start in the New Year with GHPS. Class room and workforce planning are well underway.

The 2018 Annual Implementation Plan which helps drive the key educational outcomes the school wants to achieve for the next year is being developed and should be finalised by the 1st week of December for School Council approval.

The Parent Payment Policy for 2018 was reviewed and approved by School Council and will be mailed out to families in November. As always this is an absolutely fundamental part of the school’s funding model to ensure the best possible educational facilities and opportunities are afforded to students.

The DET Parent Opinion Survey responses are in and the results were overwhelmingly positive. There was a common theme regarding communication from school to parents, and School Council would like to remind the community of the myriad of communication tools the school uses to get information home to you. These include notices carried home by students, the Skoolbag app, the GHPS website, newsletters (both school and GPA specific), as well as communication from class teachers who are also available to address any questions you may have.

The Working Bee held on Sunday 15th October placed a huge emphasis on getting the East site looking pretty for the fete. I’m sure you will all agree the school is looking great and we thank those who attended in their fantastic efforts.

Current Capital Works are on track to be completed by 4th November. There will be some minor ongoing works post this date to the main

school entrance area on the East site but the West site works should all be finished on time.

The implementation of the East site gates being locked between 8.45am and 3.45pm seems to be having a positive impact on driver behaviour. We still see a couple of incidents a week that are very worrisome, including parking across the driveway, but hopefully with some further re-education treaties to those involved we can eliminate as many school safety concerns as possible.

There have been some issues raised to the school with regards to communication and billing from Youth Leadership Victoria (before and after care providers). The school has written and spoken to YLV regarding this and advised them that they must make improvements in these areas. Should any issues continue to arise users of the service are strongly encouraged to address directly with YLV as the school is somewhat limited in its capacity to get directly involved in this.

School Council reviewed and approved the upcoming Grade 3/4 camp to “Camp Rumbug” near Foster – it certainly looks like the children will be having a wonderful time there.

If there is any issue any member of the school community would like to raise with School Council, please email [email protected]

We are proud of all of our students who took the initiative to be part of this writing experience. Also, we are proud to announce that Glen Huntly Primary School had 10 or more students successfully progress past the initial judging in the 2017 Schools Writing Competition.

From over 10,000 entries throughout Primary and Secondary schools, GHPS has been recognised for outstanding student writing as less than 10% of schools showed this level of achievement.

Term 4 Working Bee Report

The Working Bee held on Sunday 15th October was extremely successful and productive. We focused mainly on the East site, in preparation for the School fete on October 28th. Again we had just over forty participants, who assisted generously and diligently in accomplishing all of the tasks listed below. The plinth work on the West site required more time and will entail some more wood, which can be completed during the next Working Bee.

Scope of work for Working Bee on Sunday 15th October:

a) Improving our Biodiversity rating by: increasing understorey plants, removing non-native plants, increasing organic litter in the school grounds, improving soil management in some areas

b) Planting a variety of Nandina native plants c) Removing/cutting down dangerous/hazardous

branches/tree sections/trees d) Beautifying and tidying up all gardens and

grounds areas e) Spreading mulch on garden beds f) Raking and relocating existing soft fall under

playground equipment on the East site, to provide a safe and even coverage

g) Weeding and pruning gardens and plants h) Cleaning up and tidying garden and drain pit

and area around eastern end of footbridge and garden area surrounding the Glen Huntly ship

i) Clean out small storm water drain outside 3F and 3S classrooms

j) Completing plinth work on Garden Avenue West fence site boundary

k) Levelling off/filling in any divots, dips, holes etc. that may present a trip/fall hazard on East site oval

l) Repair disconnected cricket net mesh and render all mesh joins to be safe

m) Shovel and level new sand into West site sandpits

Once again the catering provided by Yvonne Balfour and her crew of helpers was sensational! The variety of delicious and healthy salads was greatly appreciated. There was also more fantastic cake baking presentations and everyone certainly valued the time, effort and culinary creativity involved with these scrumptious and appealing dessert treats.

We would to acknowledge the contribution and efforts of the following people who generously donated their time to the achievements of our Term IV Working Bee: Kon Mentis; Andrew Kringas, Dakota, Harper; Paul Butler, Kane; Dave Johnstone, Ally Stuart, Archie, Rory; Alicia Voges, Lance Voges, Gabi, Phoebe Yan, Austin;

Shan Jayaweera, Alice, Emily; Adi Weiss, Perry Weiss, Eden; Fran Reynolds, Rob Reynolds, Ella; Rayaan, Raahil, Tasneem Khaleel; Daniel Wolfe, Aidan; Asher, Caitilin Hawkins, Samson; Joel Hinck; Peter Mazis; Venmani Raghavan, Sassi Kumar Ethiraj, Smruthi; Abhaysurya, Vijayalaxmi Beeravalli; Avanish Chinchkar, Sandeep and Priya.

I would also like to acknowledge the large and fantastic sign and message work of Hayley Kringas and Ross Donnan. Two inspirational messages have now been completed by Hayley and Ross, “WORK HARD, DREAM BIG” on the West site and “GRATITUDE IS THE ATTITUDE” on the East site. There is still one more motivating message to be painted on the East site on the roof apex of the Wendy Wilson Hall, to be seen when looking north from a location south of the hall. Stay tuned to see what this is.

The idea for these messages was entirely that of Hayley and Ross. The communications were selected from a student voice process involving our Student Council, where they were asked to discuss and vote on a list of twelve possible messages, to establish the most popular three.

Hayley and Ross have spent many many hours working on ladders and scaffolds to complete this work and we are extremely grateful for your sensational efforts and substantial time here. The responses thus far to the inspirational messages have been numerous and extremely positive.

Thank you again to everyone who participated in our Term 4 Working Bee. We greatly appreciate your contributions and work. David Jenkins Assistant Principal -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Student Council Report On Monday the 23rd October, the student council representatives and school captains talked about the Fete and what we were looking forward to at the fete.

We also talked about doing nationality news for assembly soon. Representatives from a class say a fact about a country. In the next meeting, we plan to talk about how the fete went, such as what worked well in the fete and what we can improve on.

Uno and Aarushi 5/6J
