FEB/MAR 2019
(It was -29 degrees F. this morning, and so
my thoughts naturally turn to…………………….
Baseball!)
A man was passing a field in which some
young boys were playing baseball. The man asked
one of the outfielders, “What’s the score?”
“Seventeen to nothing, sir,” the boy replied. “Well, which side is ahead?” the
man asked. “They are.” the boy said. “That looks pretty bad for you,
doesn’t it?” said the man. The confident youngster smiled and stated
optimistically, “Oh, no, sir, it ain’t so bad. We ain’t been up to bat yet!”
There are certainly times that it seems the score is “17 to nothing”
against peace, against right, against justice, against mercy. The game has
become a laugher, and gloom comes over the field of play. History has
been dotted with agonizing situations: earthquakes, floods, economic
uncertainty in the Euro-zone, wars in Syria, Afghanistan, and various
places. But closer to home there is also turmoil: job insecurity, school
shootings, financial worries, retirement questions, etc. In this game of life it
appears that the light has lost its advantage, and the darkness is winning.
What will happen now? We don’t know what the next inning has in store
for us. St. Paul says, “We see in a mirror dimly”, and so with
half-knowledge we live with uncertainties, mysteries, and doubts. Looking
again at the scoreboard, we tremble and ask, “Is it a lost cause?”
Then God places the bat in the hands of the church and empowers us
with his very own spirit. “To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit
for the common good”. This allows us to center our attention on the field of
play, and not on the scoreboard. And that’s where it should be.
We are called to be the church in this place we call Bethel Lutheran.
And as God’s own, we continue to stand in God’s Grace, and Word, and
Power. There is an old saying that goes like this: ‘Where there is no faith in
the future, there is no power in the present.’ God is faithful! One inning
may seem to go against us, but faith takes the long view. And in a powerful
way this shield of faith that God provides protects us and our attitude: We
don’t look for a place to hide in the dugout; we look forward to play.
“Lead on O King eternal: We follow not with fears, For gladness breaks
like morning, Where’er your face appears. Your cross is lifted o’er us;
We journey in its light; The crown awaits the conquest; Lead on, O God
of might!”
Thank you Church Council for your confidence to elect me as your President
(Council Chair). As I promised Sara Dreyer (the Vice-President) I will make every
effort to attend each and every council meeting. I also will endeavor to follow Robert’s
Rules of Order and the Church Constitution to the best of my ability, to give each
council member a chance to voice his or her opinion on any topic of the agenda and to
keep our meetings within reasonable time limits.

Highlights
The mission of the Church is to Glorify
God
Tuesday, December 11, 2018
Old business: Volunteering at the Concession Stand at BSU Hockey Games---Nov. 24:
If we are to do this again, we should communicate a little bit better, but all in all it went well. We made $287 for the event.
2018 Financial Audit: Bruce Wegley and Janelle Lundeen volunteered. Planning for early January
New Business: Empty Council Spot:
Our constitution says “The church council shall be 12 members”. There was discussion about having a range of 10-12 members on the council for the 2020 year. This would have to be amended by the church voting members to be in the constitution.
New Members: Rachel Lundgren and sons Carson Hays and Porter Hays; Anita Spangler
Cleaning Quote: RK Cleaning came in and looked. It would be $65 a day for her to come in and clean. She cleans at other churches and the airport. The child care would pay for half of this due to the fact that the bathrooms need to be cleaned 5 days a week. Sara Dreyer and Jessica Powell will meet with her hopefully the week of Christmas. M/S Lisa Vind and Mark Kindem motion to accept her contract pending the Personnel committee approval. Aye: 9 Nay: 0 Abstain: 0
Blue Chairs: The Bemidji Community Theater came to pick up the lights and it was brought up to them that we have chairs, if they needed them. They did say that they need chairs and the chairs they are looking at are being bought at $10-$20 a piece. M/S Sara Dreyer and Vi Suther motion to sell no more than 40 of the excess chairs. Amendment: Lisa Newhouse motions to make an amendment to allocate the money made from selling the chairs to the Property committee. Aye: 9 Nay: 0 Abstain: 0
Bible Study: There was a younger member who asked about a men's Bible study at a different time other than 7:00am. Lisa Vind said that she would be willing to start a Bible study Wednesday nights for anyone who would like to come.
Tuesday, January 8, 2019 Old Business: RK Cleaning:
They started on January 2nd. The bathrooms are cleaned very well and everything is going well. Sara and Jessica met with the owner and they are willing to come in for a big wedding or funeral or before church on Sunday.
Snow Removal: Between Mark, Jessica and DeeAnne they are doing the snow removal for this winter.
Proposed Budget for 2019: We had year end donations of $128,000. So we have a balanced budget going into 2019. It is entered into line 409 for $17,070.01 and the rest was put into the savings account. Benevolence is 10% of our income, 5% going to the NALC and the other 5% split between national and local. Pastor Mark Kindem wanted his salary to go to the housing allowance for tax purposes.
New Business: Window Shades in the Sanctuary:
Char Espe contacted someone from Cabinet Corner who is coming out sometime this week and will measure to see what it would cost and what would be the best options for our space. We will discuss more next month.
Projector Relocation closer to screen: It is a long way for the projector to project and moving it closer would make a more crisp picture. Whoever looks into it should also see about putting in a high intensity projector. It would be mounted on a pipe closer to the screen. Lisa Vind will contact NLFX to see what our options are for need.
Annual Meeting: Sunday, January 27. Council usually sets up and cleans up for the potluck
Election of Officers: Paul McIntyre—President. Sara Dreyer—Vice President. Jessica Powell—Treasurer Kelly Kindem—Secretary
Lighting up the Stain Glass Cross: Sara Dreyer would like to see the cross illuminated. Samantha Pond agreed to take on this task.
Kiosk: The table in the Narthex that gets all the information put on it for sign-ups and other information could be changed into a kiosk that is on wheels with storage. More options should be brought to the next meeting.
