With the prevailing rainy weather in the province, a question was raised as to the DOST over the capability to warn people about incoming floods. DOST Leyte Director Glenn Ocana told the Philippine Information Agency that of the 14 LGUs in Leyte where said weather monitoring stations have been installed, only three LGUs reported that the same are already unoperational or unit unavailable during the monitoring conducted in December of 2013. These are the LGU Javier where the Automated Rain Gauge device was not operational and has been pulled out by DOST; LGU Kananga where the Automated Rain Gauge unit was unavailable at the December monitoring; and LGU Palo where the Water Level Monitoring System was pulled out from the station due to mast. Mayor Petilla thankful for the opportunities given to Palo after Yolanda

Mayor Remedios L. Petilla of Palo is glad that a number

of plans for the restoration and rehabilitation for the development of Leyte will be at Palo Leyte as bared during the consultative meeting for the restoration and rehabilitation of the province of Leyte. According to Mayor Petilla “It is maybe because the government center is in Palo. With the recent calamity there is a need to revisit whatever projects we have, to adjust it with what happened and what we want to happen in the coming years.” The Leyte Governor has a very good plan for the economy to spread out added Mayor Petilla. The Mayor of Palo belied the reports circulating that after Yolanda her town is getting a large portion of help from the national government as well as international humanitarian missions because the Petillas are political allies of the President. “I don’t think so!” said Petilla,

“All devastated areas are getting the much needed help, It ’s just that whoever comes to our place to help us, we take care of them.” The mayor of Palo dismissed the report that her municipality is trying to topple Tacloban as the economic hub of region 8. It is not about toppling down, said Petilla, it is about having the right to also become the economic hub. “If you’re weak, you’ll be left behind but if you’re strong … and our Municipality is competent, then there will be two of us who will qualify and it ’s our right” said Petilla. “However, nobody can prevent us from doing what we can in our own respective places because of the disaster that happened people were made to realize that there is a need to spread out the development.” According to Petilla, people are also looking into places where they can do business and do it better. It was revealed by Petilla that even before typhoon Yolanda

ravaged the town ,there were already businessmen wanting to do business in Palo but there were limitations such a ready place for business at that time and they were a bit hesitant to pursue their plans. However, with the destruction there is now a good way to start and start fast. So there are many plans, as to putting up commercial centers, agricultural areas and housing zones. Mayor Petilla also didn’t hide her excitement that the provincial government in its rehabilitation and restoration development plan, has included the transfer of airport to the municipality of Palo. Petilla said that her town is ready for this project as it could be accommodated in the barangays of Gacao, Anahaway and it can even extend to barangay Libertad. The mayor informed that despite the plan for its transfer, the Tacloban airport will be maintained because it is still serviceable. (PIA 8 with Lizbeth Ann Arcelao)
