Dear Friends,

Did you see our sign? “Love Not Hate! All are welcome!” Those words, really the epitome of who we are at Saint John Berchmans, ring especially true in the light of this weekend’s Scriptures, as we continue to learn lessons from Jesus in Matthew’s

Sermon on the Mount.

The Book of Leviticus first provides us with a call and some dos and don’ts. God invites us to be holy. That’s our call. God delivers a message for us all to hear regarding some things we should avoid, common things, tempting things, nonetheless things the people called to be holy should avoid.

Let’s start with hatred, revenge and grudges. After months of political polarity and harsh words, perhaps now is the time for the holy ones (namely us) to work for peace, justice and unity. We can let go, as hard as it may seem, of negativity, anger and resentment. Hearing the call to holiness, let’s forgive from our hearts those who have wronged us. Let’s see the goodness in others and realize that each of us is a child of God.

I’m reminded of a quote I read on the back of a church years ago. It states, “Be kind because everyone you meet is facing a hard battle.” Sometimes we can recognize the battles of others. Sometimes they’re unknown and invisible. If we heed Leviticus’s final message for us today, we will do well to promote a culture of peace and harmony. “Love your neighbor as yourself,”

Thousands of years after the words “Love your neighbor as yourself ” appeared in the Book of Leviticus, Jesus used them in his teaching and preaching. That line must have struck Cardinal Cupich too. He decided to use it as the theme for this year’s Annual Catholic Appeal. As we participate in the mission of Jesus in this time and place, we do so in the context of the Archdiocese of Chicago. The Annual Catholic Appeal allows us to join with Cardinal Cupich in his efforts to ensure that all the

people of Cook and Lake Counties hear the message of Jesus and grow in his love.

I realize that this campaign comes on the heels of our successful To Teach Who Christ Is Campaign, and that many of us have committed generously to it. This is distinctly different. It is our yearly effort to build up the ministries at Saint John Berchmans and beyond our boundaries. Saint John Berchmans has been quite successful in past ACA efforts. We’ve received millions of dollars in matching funds, retired the church debt, and used recent rebates to upgrade our church facilities. We participate in a win win game: we partner with the Cardinal, and we build up Saint John Berchmans! Please participate generously in the ACA. I intend to do the same.

Finally, Jesus holds the bar high for his followers. We hear, “Be perfect as your Heavenly Father is perfect.” He invites us to go the extra mile, to turn the other cheek, to love our enemies and to pray for those who persecute us. Living love leads us to perfection. Being generous begets generosity. Mercy breeds mercy. So we return to the sign under which you walked today. And we commit to the challenge the words put before us. It must be more than words. The words on our sign need to inspire action. In whatever we do - at home, church, work or school – we must allow love to motivate. And great things will happen.

SOUP WITH SUBSTANCE RETURNS MARCH 3 FOR LENT

Our popular Lenten Soup with Substance series returns on March 3 with a lineup of timely issues presented by a variety of speakers. Soup with Substance takes place on Fridays during Lent in the parish hall directly after Stations of the Cross. Start time is about 7:30 p.m. The program features a simple meal of soup and bread served while we listen to a presentation followed by the opportunity for questions and discussion. The program runs about 45 minutes. Look for a signup for volunteers to make soup to share. The schedule for this years Soup with Substance is:

Queridos Amigos,

¿Ha visto nuestro letrero? “¡Amar y no Odiar! ¡Todos son bienvenidos!” Esas palabras son realmente el paradigma de quiénes somos en San Juan Berchmans, son especialmente verdaderas al referirnos a las Escrituras de este fin de semana, mientras continuamos aprendiendo lecciones de Jesús en el Sermón

del Monte de Mateo.

El Libro del Levítico primero nos proporciona un llamado sobre lo que se debe y no se debe hacer. Dios nos invita a ser santos. Ese es nuestro llamado. Dios nos da un mensaje que todos debemos escuchar acerca de cosas que debemos evitar, cosas comunes, cosas tentadoras, las cosas que las personas llamadas a ser santos deben evitar.

Comencemos con la odiosa, venganza y el rencor. Después de meses de segregación política y palabras duras, tal vez ahora es el momento para que los santos (es decir, nosotros) trabajemos por la paz, la justicia y la unidad. Podemos deshacernos, por más difícil que parezca, de la negatividad, la ira y el resentimiento. Al escuchar el llamado a la santidad, perdonemos sinceramente a los que nos han ofendido. Veamos la bondad en los demás y nos daremos cuenta de que cada uno de nosotros es un hijo de Dios.

Me recuerda una frase que leí en la parte posterior de una iglesia hace años. Decía: “Sé compasivo, pues aquellos que conoces mantienen una batalla más dura”. A veces podemos reconocer las batallas de los demás. A veces son desconocidas e invisibles. Si pongamos atención al mensaje final del Levítico para nosotros hoy, haremos bien en promover la cultura de paz y armonía. “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo,”

Miles de años después de las palabras “Ama a tu prójimo como a ti mismo” aparecieran en el Libro del Levítico, Jesús las utilizó en su enseñanza y predicación. Esa frase también debe haber impulsado al Cardenal Cupich. Decidió utilizarla como el tema de la Campaña Católica Anual de este año. Cuando participamos en la misión de Jesús en este tiempo y lugar, lo hacemos en el contexto de la Arquidiócesis de Chicago. La Campaña Católica Anual nos

permite unirnos con el Cardenal Cupich en sus esfuerzos para asegurar que toda la gente de los Condados Cook y Lake escuchen el mensaje de Jesús y crezcan en su amor.

Me doy cuenta de que esta campaña está cerca a nuestra exitosa Campaña Enseñar Quien Es Cristo, y que muchos de nosotros nos hemos comprometido generosamente con ella. Esto es claramente diferente. Y nos comprometemos con el desafío que nos plantean las palabras. Necesitan ser más que palabras. Las palabras en nuestro letrero deben inspirar acción. En lo que hacemos - en el hogar, en la iglesia, en el trabajo o en la escuela - debemos permitir que el amor nos motive. Y grandes cosas sucederán.

Hay tres lugares de estacionamiento en frente de la iglesia designados para las personas discapacitadas. Por favor sea considerado y no se estacione en estos lugares reservados a menos que tenga un permiso especial para discapacitados. La Sopa con Substancia se lleva a cabo los viernes durante la Cuaresma en el salón parroquial directamente después de del Vía Crucis. La hora de inicio es alrededor de las 7:30 p.m. El programa cuenta con una simple comida de sopa y pan servidos mientras escuchamos una presentación seguida por la oportunidad de preguntar y discutir. Annual Catholic Appeal: “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself”

This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew commitment. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable in installments.

The ACA theme, “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself,” was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese.

Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services.
