OLDP updates

This Friday, February 7th, is our Annual Gumbo Ball, dinner and dance, at 7:00 p.m. in the Bahan Center. If we are not sold out, you can call the Church Office at 466-4511 to purchase your tickets. I hope to see you there.

Thursday, February 13th, is our first Spring Fest Booth Captains meeting at 7:00 p.m., in the Bahan Center. Please join us if you would like to help in one of our booths, at this year’s Spring Fest, which will be celebrating our National Champion

LSU Bayou Bengals!

And speaking of our 2020 Spring Fest we are still looking for people to help us “Fill the Fence for the Fest” with sponsorship signs: in memory of a loved one, in thanksgiving for something, for prayers answered, to honor our service men & women or first responders, to honor our Blessed Mother or the Sacred Heart of Jesus or your favorite heavenly Saint, for your favorite team or school or player, in support of OLDP Church, or just to acknowledge the amazing season that our LSU Fighting Tigers had.

Sponsorship Fence signs will be the same size and price as our $100 Booth Signs and will be displayed on the fence for 2 weeks before the Fest, the week of the Fest, and 2 weeks after the Fest. I have upped my signs to 4 now. Who else will step up? Wouldn’t it be a fantastic sight, and even a great Evangelization tool, if we truly did cover our fence?

God bless you, Fr. Mike

THOUGHT OF THE DAY

THE ROAD TO GOD There is but one road to lead us to God—

Day of Silence on Social Media, February 8. On this day we will again be going Silent on Social Media with the theme: “Don’t post…pray!” For 24 hours, beginning at 12 midnight on February 8, do not use your social media for viewing or posting until midnight on February 9th. Traffickers often use social media to exploit their victims. Buyers often use social media to purchase victims. Let’s go silent in solidarity with those who are being vic-timized and as a sacrifice to offer for all involved in Human Trafficking. “Like” the Respect Life Office page on Facebook to get social media updates for February 8. https://www.facebook.com/ NOLAre-spectlife/ Novena to End Human Trafficking, February 9-17—go to https://nolacatholic.org/novena-to-end-human-trafficking for information.

The Second Collection at all Masses February 8-9, will be taken up for Catholic Charities Archdio-cese of New Orleans. Our parish support in this second collection provides crucial funds that enable Catholic Charities to bring hope and support to those in need in our archdiocese. Donations through this second collection enable Catholic Charities to help over 77,099 individuals and fami-lies each year. Donations provide life-giving ser-vices such as food deliveries for the elderly, care for the physically and developmentally disabled, sup-port and care for new and expecting mothers, and so much more! Please join in this mission of service to the poor and vulnerable by supporting Catholic Charities with an open and generous heart. 95 cents of every dollar received goes directly to com-munity services.

We offer our sincere condolences to the family of

Yvette Eitmann and

Rena “Joyce” Young

Presentation of the Lord

CHRIST OUR LIGHT When we say that Christ is the Light of the World we think of the “Sun” of justice and peace that dawned when Jesus was born as a human being. We think of the light that pierced and destroyed the dark-ness of sin and death when Jesus died on the cross. We can also think of the lamp that shines on our lives and goes before us on our journey. Christ our Light can reveal our true selves to us—in all our goodness and weakness. He can illuminate the paths ahead of us, helping us to see which one God is beckoning us to take. Today’s Gospel provides four examples of per-sons who sought and followed the light. Simeon and Anna devoted themselves to following the light of the law and seeking the light of the promised Messiah. Joseph and Mary followed the law by presenting Jesus to God and offering up two turtledoves. One day the light of Christ would lead them to offer up their only son. All four, in their own ways, recognized and fol-lowed the light. Each endured sacrifices and testing along the way and each one was refined “like gold or like silver” so that they themselves could give glory to God.

CHRIST OUR HELP If we try to follow closely the white-hot Light of the World we, too, will be refined and purified along the way. We may also be tested, as Jesus was, and faced with sacrifices. Those daily sacrifices and tests may seem small in comparison to Jesus’ suffering, yet they are what make us Christians. Day by day, Christ our Light can reveal to us what we must do. Christ our Help can then free us from fear, giving us the courage to follow the trail he has blazed for us. We can always rely on Christ for help as we seek to follow the Light of the World.
