February 18th Program - Randy Van DuinenArchitectural PhotographyLearn all aspects of doing architectural photography. Where do I place my lights? How to I control and mix different types of light? How to I make a building and its rooms look great? Learn how to use the software that will make buildings come alive!

Randy is currently an architectural photographer, art photographer and photography instructor located in St. Petersburg, Florida. He has been a professional photographer for over 25 years and his photography is in hundreds of brochures for builders, architects and interior designers from around the country. Randy was named the 2012 Photographer of the Year by the Florida Professional Photographers association.

Randy has also been published in many local and national magazines, including Interiors, Professional Builder, USA Today and Tampa Bay Illustrated. He has spoken at national photography events, and is a featured speaker at the Florida Professional Convention. Randy is one of the lead instructors for “The Digital Photo Workshops” which holds photography workshops around the country. Randy is also an instructor of photography at The Morean Art Center in St Petersburg, FL, teaching Photoshop, Lightroom, Landscape, Architectural and HDR photography.

2014 is looking fantastic for our Guild! Starting the year off with a Great Party, then Hybrid Photography by Betty Huth and Ed Booth, right after that we have an amazing program on lighting. Yes! Everyone’s favorite Painting with light with Landon Day, this event is being held at the exclusive venue, “Out of The Blue”, this is a great wedding venue located inside of Jonathan’s Landing in Jupiter.

February we will have on of the Top 10 Photographers of the year, Randy Van Duinen. Randy will have 2 different programs, one at our Palm Beach Guild and another program at the Miami Guild the next day!.... Maybe a few of us can get together and take a ride down.

Hello All, I would like to share with you all my experience at Imaging USA. It was held in Phoenix Arizona January 12th, 13th and 14th.

For those of you that don’t know about this event, Imaging USA is the longest running national photographic convention, expo and image exhibition in the United States drawing thousands of professionals from around the world. Dating back to 1880 when it began as the annual convention and trade show for Professional Photographers of America, the event is always growing and evolving. Major components of Imaging USA are the three-day Imaging EXPO trade show, several all-inclusive parties and presentations by some of the biggest names in the photographic industry. This year definitely did not disappoint with over 10,000 photography pros under one roof.

My motivation for attending Imaging this year was that I have had some success with image competitions this year. Working with the judges comments and critiques from our Guild competition, I took my images to State level (FPP). Regional Level (SEPPA) and then to International level (PPA) at the International Photographic Competition. This was my first attempt at bringing my images to a higher level and to my surprise, two of the four images I submitted to PPA merited and one of my images was selected for the Travelling Loan Collection! I later learned that only 300 out of thousands of images were selected for this prestigious honor. They informed me that my Loan Collection image was going to be shown at Imaging USA, so I had to go and see what this was all about.

I have been to our State Convention (FPP) several times, but I can tell you that Imaging was that convention on steroids! First let me just say that it was H U G E. The convention took over 2 full buildings at the Phoenix Convention center and three hotels. Big name photographers everywhere. It was just mind blowing to say the least.

Each day offered several programs categorized by “track” such as Adobe, Business, Inspiration, Portrait, School Event & Sport, Technique, and Wedding. My journey began with a live demo program with Julie Klaasmeyer. She demonstrated her technique with live models and explained her lighting setup, her studio setup, how she gets the children to do what she wants, her session flow and her workflow. She was lively, informative and down to earth. I could relate to what she was saying as this is my market, and I came away with a few nuggets of knowledge from her that I will be able to use. For example, she uses tape with the children to keep their hands together and to keep their attention at a specific location she wants them to focus on.…very clever ;-) This was a top notch program and I was very glad I had the opportunity to watch it. Julie Klaasmeyer also brought a travelling version of her Design Revolution webstore to the trade show that was equally as impressive and needless to say I was compelled to bring some goodies home with me.

Next I focused on Business with a program from Jeffrey Shaw called “Prosperity & Purpose: The Photography Business through a different lens. His program was though provoking, inspirational and empowering. His main philosophy is that Purpose + Positive Action – Limiting Beliefs = Prosperity. He offered many words of wisdom such as this quote “Often people attempt to live their lives backwards, they try to have more things, or more money, in order to do more of what they want, so they will

be happier. The way it actually works is in the reverse. You must first be who you really are, then do what you need to do, in order to have what you want.” Margaret Young. Another great one that really resonated with me was “Artists get paid for what they create. Not for what they do.” And finally “Prosperity is not something we achieve. It’s something we receive”. He informed us that The cycle of alignment is as follows: Define your purpose and skills, Being Found, Acknowledge the needs of your clients, Discover their deeper need, Create deep relationships, Generate referrals, Expand your following and Start Over.

After that program I could have gone home quite content that I had gotten my money’s worth. And this was about 11am on the first day! I had two more days of programs, the trade show and the EXPO of images from the International Photographic Competition still to see. To give you an idea of the programs I participate din next, here are the photographers and business gurus that I had the pleasure of learning from: Beth Taubner – Branding 101, Rachel Stevens, Boudoir: Raising the Bar, Bruce Dorn: Introduction to Hybrid storytelling, Joseph and Louise Simone: Back to the Future - the fundamentals of Art in Portraiture, Angela Lynn Pencsak – Creative Edge in Maternity and Newborn Photography. And this was just a very small sampling of the programs offered, sooo many more to choose from. I was then off to the trade show and the EXPO. Well two feet in the door I was greeted by Clay Blackmore as a Canon Explorer of Light speakers on stage. And then there was Michele Celentano, Joe Buissink, and Sandy Puc, and then Hansen Fong giving a demo. Over at the Sticky Album booth there was Sarah Petty talking to people up close and personal. I then went over o the EXPO to se my image shown with all the others in the Loan Collection. As I was headed over to the big screens with there travelling Loan Collection slideshow, I saw the entrance banner for the show and there was my image on it..front and center! They used my image out of all of the others in the collection to showcase the event..I was thrilled beyond belief! It was all very surreal as all of these big name photographers were here and so was my little Loan Print and I. I felt somehow a small part of this larger than life family and I must say I was filled with pride.

Imaging USA was all about being inspired by the best the industry has to offer who are willing to share what they know to help you on your journey, that is what being a member of PPA is all about. From the Guild level to the National stage being a part of an organization founded over 100 years ago is awe inspiring. For those who are truly serious about their craft and their business, there is no excuse not to be a member of your local Guild, your state level and PPA. This incredible network of amazingly talented and highly successful people are here to help you and support you on your journey if you let them. Decades of knowledge, decades of success, and the latest and greatest equipment and vendor support, why wouldn’t you want to be a part of this? Everything about PPA is new and fresh and everything about PPA is about learning from the success of the past with a keen eye towards the future. Say what you want about the masters of the past, they have learned that what’s old can be new and how we can ebb and flow with the technology and the market if we continue to learn and grow as artists.

Every program I participated in at Imaging USA was outstanding. Each one was filled with many nuggets that I will take with me on my journey. One thing is for sure. I am well on my way to achieving my goal of receiving my Masters of Photography degree from PPA and I invite you to do the same.

Winter  Warmth:  Create  a  Flame  in  Photoshop

I  was  working  on  a  postcard  layout  montage  for  a  jewelry  artisan  recently,  specifically  the  “indicia”  side  of  the  postcard,  meaning  the  side  that  you  address  and  place  the  stamp  on.    To  separate  the  “To:”  area  from  the  address  area,  I  wanted  to  place  a  vertical  line  with  a  flame  at  the  top.  The  flame  was  to  represent  the  method  my  client  used  to  melt  metals  into  jewelry.  This  seemed  like  an  interesting  process  to  document,  as  it  uses  brushes,  an  EPS  file,  rasterization,  multiple  layers  for  control,  Photoshop’s  “selecting  areas”  process  and  USPS  postcard  regulation  graphic  layout  knowledge,  all  useful  Photoshop  techniques  and  information.    You  can  see  the  finished  flame  atop  a  “post”  separator,  and  it  contains  my  copyright  and  contact  information.  By  the  way,  there  are  specific  USPS  regulations  on  how  this  side  of  a  postcard  is  constructed.  To  see  the  areas  that  are  reserved  by  the  USPS,  visit  http://www.overnightprints.com/usps.  They  have  each  sized  postcard  and  its  specific  regulation  areas  marked.    

I  needed  a  flame  to  work  with,  and  my  go-­‐to  source  for  editable  graphics  is  a  copy  of  Art  Explosion  750,000  Images  from  Nova  Development.  If  it  exists  as  clipart,  this  48-­‐CD  set  has  it  (Thanks,  Linda  King!).  I  found  what  I  needed  and  went  to  work.    If  you’d  like  to  play  along  at  home,  you  can  download  the  graphic  from  here:  http://tinyurl.com/l2fkehj    (all  lower  case  letters).  I  could  have  used  the  COMPLICATED  pen  tool  to  create  a  flame,  but  there’s  nothing  like  having  ready-­‐made  clipart  to  pick  from.    

The  flame  clipart,  pictured  here,  has  the  right  shape  and  motif  to  it  to  convey  the  message.  However,  it  didn’t  have  the  coloration  I  thought  delivered  the  final  visual  punch.  Flames  aren’t  black,  as  most  of  us  know.  This  tutorial  is  about  how  to  use  layers  to  blend  in  brush-­‐applied  colors  to  the  brush  pattern  to  create  the  realistic  look.    

First,  the  graphic  is  in  EPS  format,  meaning  it  is  a  vector  graphic,  typically  created  and  modified  by  Adobe  Illustrator®.  Photoshop  is  generous  in  its  recognition  of  file  types,  so  we  don’t  need  Illustrator.    The  easiest  thing  to  do  is  place  the  EPS  file  on  my  desktop,  then  drag  the  EPS  icon  on  top  of  my  Photoshop  icon.  Photoshop  will  open  and  then  want  to  convert  this  to  a  bit-­‐mapped  format.  PS  asks  to  “Rasterize”  the  file.    The  default  rasterization  resolution  was  72,  but  because  I’m  using  the  graphic  in  a  300dpi  image,  I’ll  change  the  resolution  to  300  and  click  OK.  If  you  don’t  change  it,  it  will  have  jaggy
