Vanuit die Warm Stoel

Die 2019 George Oumotorskou is agter die rug. Daar is vanjaar baie hard gewerk om van die skou ‘n sukses te maak en vanuit die terugvoering wat ons kry, lyk dit asof dit weer eens ‘n suksesvolle skou was. Ons het verskeie e-pos ontvang waarin mense hulle waardering uitspreek oor hoe hulle dit geniet het. Vanjaar was die eerste keer sover ek weet, dat die skou deur die klubkomitee self gereël en hanteer is. Dit het meegebring dat die komitelede ‘n dubbele las moes dra – dié van kluborganisering en die reël van die skou. Daar is geweldig hard gewerk deur die komitee en ek wil dan ook van hierdie geleentheid gebruik maak om vir hulle BAIE dankie te sê. As die komitee nie besluit het om self die skou te hanteer nie, sou daar nie ‘n skou gewees nie. Ek wil ook my opregte dank uitspreek teenoor die klublede wat saam met die klubkomitee baie hard gewerk het en baie moeite gedoen het om van die skou ‘n sukses te maak. Op hierdie noot kan ek nie anders as om my teleurstelling uit te spreek oor die geweldige traagheid van klublede om betrokke te raak nie. Wat die moontlike skuif van die klubhuis betref, is daar ‘n subkomitee aangestel om na die hele aangeleentheid te kyk en hulle het alreeds vergader. Al die opsies word ondersoek waarna klublede se insette verkry sal word. Dit is met groot hartseer dat ons verneem het van die heengaan van oom Charles van Zyl. Hy het so ‘n besondere passie gehad vir die motorbedryf. Hy was ook een van die min mense wat ‘n werkende warmlugmotor kon bou, die sogenaamde Stirling motor. Dit het iets vertel van sy verstaan van meganika, maar ook van sy praktiese vaardigheid. Baie sterkte aan sy familie in hierdie tyd.

A word from the Editor

The year started with a bang and the first few events are past, the annual George Old Car Show being the biggest event that the club organises each year. There are many events still to come, so get those cars out and let’s proudly drive and show our passion. In hierdie uitgawe is daar veskeie bydraes en ek wil weereens vir Koot du Toit en Rosita Kuschke bedank vir hul hulp hiermee. Dit is met groot hartseer wat ons verneem het van die afsterwe van Oom Charles van Zyl op 23 Februarie kort voor sy 93ste verjaarsdag. Ons dink aan die familie in hierdie tyd. Daar verskyn ook ‘n paar huledblyke aan Oom Charles van klublede. At the last Bonnets Up we had a visit from the Southern Cape Veteran Tractor Association and enjoyed their company around the braai fires while they showcased a vintage tractor. Hopelik is dit die begin van meer sosiale verkeer met ander klubs. Ons nuwe komiteelid, Lionel Buckley wat verantwoordelik is vir regalia wil meer entoesiame kweek onder ons klublede. Kyk na sy versoek oor regalia elders en kontak hom asb. met terugvoer. Please drive safely and we hope to see more people at the forthcoming events. Happy motoring

Important Notice / Belangrik

The committee has negotiated with Glenwood school for club members to park OLD CARS only (i.e. cars up to 1975) close to the clubhouse during club events. We kindly request that people do not drive over the sports fields. Please drive around the outer edge of the sports fields. During wet conditions we may also not drive to the clubhouse due to the damage it causes to the grassed areas. We appeal to all to please adhere to this request. Die komitee het toestemming van Glenwood skool verkry om slegs met OU MOTORS (d.w.s. motors tot einde 1975) naby die klubhuis te parkeer. Daar moet asb. glad nie oor die sportvelde gery word nie. Ry asb. om die buitelyne van die sportvelde. Tydens nat toestande moet daar asb. glad nie op die gras gery word nie. Ons vra almal se samewerking in hierdie verband.

Please note that the conditions of the liquor licence for the bar at the clubhouse prohibits anyone to bring any alcohol onto the premises. The bar is open during all events and the prices are close to, or often below cost. Please support the bar as these funds go straight back into the club. We kindly request that all please comply with this request, as non-compliance may put the liquor licence in jeopardy.

Wel en Weë / Tears and Joy

Dit is met hartseer dat ons verneem van die afsterwe van Oom Charles van Zyl op Saterdag 23 Februarie op die ouderdom van 92 jaar. Ons dra ons medelye aan die familie oor.

Mike Alexander I only have wonderful memories of this great man. He was the epitome of an absolute gentleman and always seemed to have an almost regal personality. He had an absolute passion for his hot air engines, his old cars and tractors and for the SCOCC and its members. He would always be ready and willing to have a chat or share some of his incredible wisdom. Also, he was very patient with people – I can recall him explaining over and over the workings of his engines at the various shows or at his house, and always with an absolute enthusiasm as if you were the very first person who had asked the question. Oom Charles also had a wonderful sense of humour, and I will always have him in my mind telling the story of the Spanner Family at the one AGM many years ago! Those of us who visited him last year at Blue Mountain were reminded again of the adventurous life that he had led, and I was astounded at how well he could recollect incidents and certain cars that he had possessed over the years. He was also a very inventive person who always had a plan to enable him to do what he wanted, even in later life when his legs were much weakened. His looped rope always springs to mind!

He loved attending Club outings and especially Bonnets Up, and had a very passionate desire that the Club should have a proper Clubhouse. All of us are going to greatly miss him, and share our condolences with his wife and family.

Danie Schmidt Ek was 5 jaar oud toe ons van die Vrystaat af Sedgefield toe getrek het waar my pa en oupa N&S Bouers daar begin het. Oom Charles het in die middel sewentigs in Sedgefield vir hom ‘n vakansie huis langs die hoofpad laat bou. Volgens hom was my pa en oupa se kwotasie te hoog en het hy toe ‘n ander plaaslike bouer gebruik om die huis vir hom te bou. My oupa Tiek en ouma Annie het net so ‘n paar 100m verder af in die pad in die “huis met die perde” gewoon. Ek onthou nog soos gister hoe ons tjokkers met ons fietse daar in die pad af gery het en Oom Charles en tannie Henna en hul 2 seuns stop daar voor die huis met sy cream Ponton van Upington af vir die Desember vakansie. Ons jaag dan terug na oupa en vertel “Oom Charles is hier, Oom Charles is hier”. Die bou van sy huis het nie so glad verloop soos hy beplan het nie en hy moes maar later kom hulp en raad vra by my pa en oupa. Hulle het later goeie vriende geword en ek onthou nog hoe hulle altyd kom Brug speel het by my oupa. As daar koffie gedrink word het Oom Charles altyd sulke interessante stories vertel van wat soms in die hof gebeur het. Oom Charles het in die laat laat tagtigs afgetree en in die huis in Victoriastraat kom bly in George. Hy was toe in die week tussen sy karre, trekkers, enjins en nog meer bedrywig op Sedgefield maar naweke het hy George toe gegaan. Ek was nooit baie geïnteresseerd in sy seël versameling nie maar ek het ‘n groot passie vir voorlaaiers met hom gedeel. Daardie jare kon ons nog sommer daar in die agterplaas in Sedgefield ‘n paar skote skiet met ‘n Sanna. My oupa is in 1989 aan kanker oorlede maar my vriendskap met Oom Charles het nooit verander nie.

My pa het my geleer van ‘n draaibank en ‘n freesmasjien en ysters. My oupa het my geleer van perdry en ‘n hoe om ‘n perd te beslaan en ‘n toom self te maak. Hy het my ook geleer om ‘n paar velskoene te maak, maar Oom Charles het my geleer dat daar nie net regmaak van iets oud is nie maar ook die bewaar daarvan vir die nageslag. Daarin was hy ‘n spesialis. Hy was ook baie sentimenteel en het sy pa se ou trekker gaan soek en gerestoureer wat nou by Kobus Halliday in sy museum staan. Peter Boshoff het ‘n National stilstaande enjin by die afgelope motorskou gehad wat Oom Charles saam met hom op hulle ou familieplaas (of baie naby daaraan) gaan haal het. Ek was saam met Oom Charles by oom PW Botha gewees by Die Anker waar ons ure om gekuier het oor ou gewere en Afrikana. Dit was dan net vanselfsprekend dat ek my eerste oumotor by Oom Charles gekoop en gerestoureer het, ‘n 1935 Ford Fordor Sedan. Oom Charles se woorde op ons eerste rit, “jy moet stadig hy gaan kook” was nie koud nie toe lyk dit of dit begin reën op die windskerm en die Ford borrel. Die vriendskap tussen ons families het net nooit vervaag nie. Selfs my seun Casper het drie jaar gelede nog ‘n ou Beetle by hom gekoop. Tussen ons versameling stilstaande engines is daar ook heelparty wat deur Oom Charles se hande by ons beland het. Oom Charles het ook gereeld by my ma en my tannie Tilla in Sedgefield aangeklop vir raad en hulp oor sitplekke en stoffeerwerk met sy baie projekte. My pa was ook nie uitgesluit nie, by hom wou hy leer oor staal draaibankwerk en draadsny en my pa moes ook baie van Oom Charles se idees en planne omskakel in werkende werkstukke. Oom Charles het by my sussie, Annamarie, rekenaarklasse geneem toe hy besef het hy sal sy rekenaarvaardighede moet opknap toe hy die redakteurskap van die Spanner oorgeneem het (en moenie dink hy was nie toe al 70 jaar oud nie). Dieselfde Spanner wat Phillip Rosser die afgelope paar jaar gereeld saam met my gestuur het om vir Oom Charles te gee as ek hom besoek het in die Haven waar hy gewoon het. Oom Charles, dankie vir jou diep spore in my hart, ons sal jou mis.

Phillip Rosser

Oom Charles van Zyl (11 Maart 1926 – 23 Februarie 2019) Oom Charles van Zyl het van kleins af, soos hy dit self beskryf het “net met wielietjies en tolletjies gespeel”. Dit was waar sy belangstelling in motors en later oumotors ontstaan het. Sy belangstelling het die restourasie van oumotors, trekkers en stilstaaande enjins ingesluit. Na sy aftrede het hy homself besig gehou met die ontwerp en bou van Stirling warmlug-enjins. Oom Charles wou altyd in ‘n ingenieursrigting studeer, maar omstandighede het bepaal dat hy regte studeer het. Na ‘n lang regsloopbaan het hy in 1986 as Hoof-landros van Kaapstad afgetree. Na sy aftrede het hy vier een-man Kommissies van Ondersoek afgehandel, een vir Swaziland en drie vir die Suid-Afrikaanse Regering. Oom Charles wat in 1991 by die klub aangesluit het was seker een van die bekendste lede van die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub. Hy het 13 oumotors, 7 veteraan trekkers en etlike stilstaande enjins gerestoureer. Hy was ook vir ‘n hele aantal jare die redakteur van die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub se nuusblad, die Spanner. As gevolg van sy passie vir die oumotorbedryf het hy as Beskermheer van die Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub gedien vanaf 2015 tot 2017. Ons het altyd gemerk dat Oom Charles byna nooit ‘n klubuitsappie gemis het nie. Namate sy gesondheid egter sy mobiliteit begin beperk het, kon hy nie meer so aktief betrokke wees nie. Oom Charles se passie vir die klub was onmiskenbaar en en hy het altyd van sy oumotor ervarings en staaltjies vertel as ek by hom in die Haven gaan kuier het. Oom Charles is na ‘n kort siekbed, kort voor sy 93ste verjaarsdag op 23 Februarie 2019 oorlede. Mag hy rus in vrede.

Nuwejaarsontbyt in Waboomskraal

Net soos verlede jaar het ons omtrent 08:00 vertrek vanaf die Engen Garage aan die voet van die Outeniquapas en binnekort was almal veilig by Peter Boshoff se plaas. The braai fires were already burning and coffee and champagne and orange juice was waiting for us. Thanks to Peter Boshoff and his helpers for hosting the event which is drawing some new faces year after year. Dankie vir ‘n heerlike kuier, ons maak vogende jaar weer so!

Bonnets Up

27 Januarie 2019

Die komitee probeer om iets interessant by elke klub byeenkoms te reël. By Januarie se Bonnets Up was ons voorgestel aan “Noddy” die klein geel gevaarte van Lionel Buckley. The tiny bright yellow car nick named “Noddy” which was restored by Lionel Buckley took center stage at the Bonnets Up. Lionel het sy ervarings met die restourasie van die motortjie met ons gedeel en almal het die interessante klein geel motortjie geniet.

Die toer het plaasgevind op die Vrydag voor die George Skou en gee die geleentheid vir oumotorliefhebbers om hulle kosbare motors te gebruik voor die skou op Saterdag en Sondag. Dié jaar se VETTOER was die 14de geleentheid en daar is net ‘n handjievol deelnemers wat kan spog dat hulle nie een van die vorige geleenthede gemis het nie. Die organiseerders was baie opgewonde om die deelnemers Donderdagaand in Klaarstroom net buite Meiringspoort, te verwelkom. Ongelooflik om te dink dat dertien van die een-en-twintig deelnemers se voertuie voor 1917 vervaardig is. Die “jongste” deelnemer was ‘n 1929 Ford Model A. Vir die eerste keer in die geskiedenis van hierdie Vettoere, het twee veteraan motorfietse ook deelgeneem. Daar is heerlik gesmul aan karoo skaaptjops, tradisionele roosterkoek en Malva-poeding vir aandete - onder die mooiste sterrehemel. Daar word vertel dat Klaarstroom ‘n paar jaar gelede ge-oormerk was vir straatligte, maar dit is deur die inwoners van die hand gewys, aangesien dit sou afbreek doen aan die mooi sterreprag in die aand. Vrydag-oggend het die lang pad terug George toe begin, ná ‘n ontbyt by die plaaslike hotel in Klaarstroom. Van die karre en motorfietse wat reeds vroeg die stryd aangesê het, was ‘n 1901 Benz, 1902 Peugeot, 1904 Durkopp motorfiets, 1904 De Dion Bouton, 1912 Bat motorfiets en dan al die Model T Ford’s, Buicks en Chev’s. Groot was die verbasing toe ons vroeg-middag by Airo Classics, die hoofborg van die toer, aandoen vir ‘n welverdiende middagete met die nodige “verversings”. Airo Classics is naby die lughawe, vanwaar al die motors met verkeersbegeleiding na die skouterrein vergesel is. Wat ‘n onvergeetlike dag!

2019 George Old Car Show

Na baie ure van beplanning en uitvoering van pligte, is elkeen wat dit bygewoon het, getuie van nog ‘n uiters suksesvolle George Oumotorskou. Van die inskrywings, reëlings vir stalletjies en staanplekke, die aanwysings en toegangsbeheer. Enigiemand nie betrokke by die reëlings, sal moeilik kan verstaan wat alles agter die skerms gebeur. Weet net dat die klubkomitee en al die helpers betrokke ‘n enorme taak afgehandel het en verdien die gelukwense van almal wat die skou bygewoon en geniet het. Nog ‘n baie belangrike aspek van die sukses van die skou, is die betrokke borge en die name wat onmiddelik na vore kom is die hoof borge naamlik Oakhurst Insurance Company, George Munisipaliteit, Protea Hotel by Marriot King George, Clickonit, Auto Pavillion, Midas, SAB, George Herald, Garden Route Mall en Clink Scales Maughan Brown. Die 2019 Veteraantoer, is vir die 14de agtereenvolgende jaar deur Philip Kuschke gereël en het weereens deel gevorm van hierdie jaar se Oumotorskou. Nie minder nie as twintig ou motors en hierdie jaar vir die eerste keer, twee veteraan motorfietse, het vanaf die Klaarstroom Gastehuis van Jeremy Witts-Hewitson in Klaarstroom vertrek en ‘n afstand van ongeveer 170 km afgelê tot by Airo Classics se nuwe ontspanningssentrum naby die George Lughawe. Hartlike dank ook aan Airo Classics en sy eienaar, Jacques Wheeler, vir die vyfjaar borgskap ontvang vir die VetToer.

Van die oudste motors wat deelgeneem het, was die Crankhandle Club se 1901 Benz, bestuur deur Harvey Metcalf, Ali van Jaarsveld se 1902 Peugeot, Tom van der Vyver se 1904 De Dion Bouton, Nic Middelmann se 1907 Nordenveld, Richard Middelmann se 1911 EMF en Ali van Jaarsveld se 1910 Buick wat deur Peter Posniak bestuur is. Die bywoningsyfer vir die 2019 skou was effens laer as dié van 2018, maar die komitee is steeds tevrede met die bywoning. Meer as 11000 mense het die skou bygewoon terwyl daar 900 motors, motorfietse, trekkers en stilstaande enjins uitgestal was. Dit sluit die groot aantal nuwe motors uit. Buiten die gewone stalletjies en biertent was daar ook meer as 5000 modelmotortjies uitgestal. Although it has been running for 23 years, for the last 19 years, the P W Botha College has been the venue for the annual George Old Car Show, for which the Southern Cape Old Car Club is eternally grateful. The time has, however, come for us to move on and from 2020, we are looking forward to host this prestigious event at Glenwood House Private School, Knysna Road, George East and the Old Car Club is looking forward to an even better and bigger Old Car Show in 2020.

The 2019 VetTour form a supporter’s

perspective

After being approached by Philip Kuschke to form part of and assist with the return of the support vehicles, we formed part of quite a large group of veteran supporters who assisted the participants to enjoy their tour with their veteran vehicles, while we mainly brought up the rear with the tow / support vehicles. A few of us were fortunate enough to be part of a well organised event, from the pleasant initial gathering at Klaarstroom, excellent

dinner and breakfast, to the beautiful warm and scenic drive from Klaarstroom to George via Meiringspoort, all made even more enjoyable by the brilliant weather. After meeting at the interesting rendezvous point in George at Airo Classics, one of the main sponsors of the VetTour, the group was entertained by the Glenwood House Private School’s Marimba Band, followed by a pleasant light lunch before being escorted in convoy to the PW Botha College in preparation for the big show over the weekend. Taking all the factors into account, another great event by a great Veteran Tour organising team! Thank you for the opportunity of being able to assist with this great event!

2019 George Old Car Show

Due to the unavailability of the previous show co-ordinator, the club committee had no option but to organise the 2019 show as a team. This was done by spreading the responsibilities among the committee members with some help from a few club members. Die resep om die skou so te reël het voordele, maar beslis ook nadele. Die voordeel is dat die verantwoordelikheid nie net deur een persoon gedra word nie, maar die feit dat daar geleentheid is waar iets maklik misgekyk kan word kan nadelig wees. Die organisasie van die skou raak jaarliks groter en die vereistes van die owerhede raak elke jaar meer en ook strenger. Ongelukkig moet ons aan die wetlike vereistes voldoen om van die owerhede die nodige toestemming te verkry waarsonder die skou nie mag voortgaan nie.

The usual drive through some of the areas of George a week before the show was changed this year to follow a route through the CBD and turning around at the Garden Route Mall to return through the CBD again. Die Garden Route Mall het ons weereens hierdie jaar geborg met spasie in die besige gedeelte van die winkelsentrum waar twee Noag voertuie vir die week voor die skou uitgestal was om die skou te adverteer. Die VetToer wat jaarliks op die Vrydag voor die skou plaasvind het hierdie jaar in Klaarstroom begin en was vir die eerste keer geborg deur Airo Classics. Dit was ‘n pragtige gesig om die sowat 20 voertuie te sien wat die dorp in konvooi binne gery het met begeleiding van die verkeersafdeling. This year’s special exhibition focussed on rare and exotic vehicles. We are proud to have had some of the rarest cars in the country, and in fact in the world, on display at this years’ show. Several of these cars participated in the VetTour which was run from Klaarstroom on Friday 8 February, the day before the show covering some 175 km. Die komitee het hierdie jaar ook vir die eerste keer ‘n eie Suid-Kaap Oumotorklub tent voorsien met verversings met ‘n area waar klublede hul motors kon parkeer. Ons vertrou dat hierdie fasiliteit verbeter en uitgebrei kan word. Each year the weather seems to affect the show in some way. This year the weather on the Saturday was superb, but slightly overcast and threatening on Sunday.

Bonnets Up 24 February 2019

Thank you, once again, to the regular supporters of the Bonnets Up gatherings at the clubhouse of the SCOCC at Glenwood House. It really is a privilege to enjoy the company of club members, to admire their pretty wheels and to hear the details of their prized possessions. On Sunday the local Veteran Tractor Association paid us a visit and showcased a tractor with a rich history. Die afgelope Sondag, het ons die voorreg gehad om Marius Stander se 1963 Massey Ferguson te bewonder. Sy pa het die trekker in die vroeë sestigerjare aangeskaf en hy het vir baie jare daarmee ‘n inkomste verdien deur grond skoon te maak en voor te berei vir eiendomsontwikkeling. Die trekker is in ‘n pragtoestand en bykans 100% oorspronklik. Sy enjin is nog onoopgemaak en die meeste van die onderdele aan die trekker, is waarmee dit oorspronklik togerus en gekoop is. Soveel so, dat die duplikaatsleutel nog in sy oorspronklike plastiese omhulsel is en nog nooit gebruik is nie. Marius het, ‘n mens kan amper sê, op hierdie spesifieke trekker grootgeword. As skoolseun het hy na skool sy pa gehelp met sy dagtaak en self die trekker bestuur. Op een van die foto’s sal u Marius se jong seun agter die stuurwiel sien sit, ‘n bewys dat hierdie pragstuk op pad is na die derde geslag toe. Baie dankie Marius, dat jy hierdie stukkie geskiedenis met ons gedeel het. Cleaning plastic headlight lenses About a year ago I bumped my six year old “Tupperware car” and broke the drivers side headlight. Fortunately the insurance fixed it as it was so expensive I would have had to take an extension on my bond to pay for it. After the new light was fitted I was now very aware of how dull the old light was in comparison to the new one. These modern lights seem to have plastic covers instead of glass. The question was how to rejuvenate the old one as the cost of a replacement was out of the question. I had for some time been aware that the lights on the car weren’t quite what they should be but didn’t realise that the problem lay with the lenses being dull and opaque compared with new ones. It was a case of what to use to clean to clean the old one as it looked so very dull compared to the new one. A trip to the local spares shop didn’t help – they had a special munti available, at a price, but warned that customers had said it didn’t always work. I thought of cleaning it with tooth paste, polishing compound, rubbing compound, Brasso etc and looking around for inspiration came across a tube of Auto Solve which is used for cleaning chrome. I tried cleaning it by hand with this Auto Solve and walla! the result was excellent. I would say it’s 90% as clear as the new light and the brightness of the lights is more or less back to normal. I’m sure there are better compounds to use but this worked for me. You may say what has that to do with collector cars – well, being made aware of the problem with these lenses I’ve seen some 20 year old cars, including posh ones, with lights that would never get through a C.O.R. My next move will be to use an electric buff to do the job properly.

Centering pulleys They say one is never too old to learn - I had this learning lesson last week. I’m busy assembling an oldish engine, which like many engines, doesn’t have an oil seal on the timing chain cover. They have a reverse tread which stops the oil from escaping. When one reads the workshop manuals they emphasise that the timing chain cover must be centralised so the gap around the pulley is equal. What they don’t tell you is how you do this. Last week I visited an engineering shop with some machining and showed the pulley and cover to the German (don’t mess with me) owner. He pointed out some scrape marks on the pulley because it hadn’t been centralised. He also pointed out that if it isn’t centralised it will leak oils as it needs the air gap to create a suction to suck in the air to hold the oil back. If the pulley touches the side of the cover it will break the suction allowing the oil to leak. He then showed me a simple way to centralise it. Wrap some masking tape around the pulley until it’s a tight fit. Fit the chain cover to the engine leaving the bolts loose. Fit the pulley with masking tape around it, then tighten the bolts. Remove the pulley and masking tape and refit the pulley without the tape and walla, an equal air gap. See picture below. Now why couldn’t I think of that?

Repairing aluminium thermostat housings

A year ago I was faced with the problem of a corroded top hose/thermostat housing. Why they make them out of such poor quality material only the manufacturers we will ever know. I recall trying to repair one using aluminium welding but because it was so old it just disintegrated. I had to import a replacement which meant the car was laid-up for many weeks – not to mention the cost. This time I had to find an alternative as I needed to use the car on a forthcoming run. After asking around for inspiration, the local hardware shop suggested I tried using a product called Q-Bond which sets rock hard and can be used on aluminium. Having little choice It was worth a try, so, I cleaned the corroded area with a wire brush and filled the affected area with this magic powder. One fills the affected area with the powder then drip what looks like super glues onto it. It sets rock hard and I was able to file it to shape within minutes. I didn’t expect it to be a permanent repair, however, if you can’t get a replacement “van die rak af”, you don’t have much choice but to repair the old one even on a temporary basis. This temporary fix was over a year ago and recently I had to remove the top hose and the repair seems to be holding up very well. Incidentally, after the repair I filled the radiator with copious amounts of anti-corrosive additive (not antifreeze) to stop any further corrosion. This seems to have worked. Note: I have subsequently imported a replacement housing but being inherently lazy I’m leaving the repaired one on the car - as the say let sleeping dogs lie
