    M. Abdul Rahman, Ex. M.P.,

Charlie Hebdo The Ugly face of the WestCharlie Hebdo is the ugly face

of the West. The publication of caricatures of the Prophet of Islam has exposed the western civil societies. Endless debate and discussions are going on to defend the so-called Freegom of Expression. The basic right is enshrined in most of the constitutions It has been violated and grossly abused by this French publication. It is a slap on the face of the humanity and decency.

This is not the fi rst incident of this kind, but repeat of many incidents like this one. This represent the Sick mind of the West and its liberated media. Media blitz has created such monsters, which are hailed as the champions of freedom of expression. It has attained the status of a Cult.

The western intellect fails to understand the sensitivities and sensibilities of a large community of adherents of Islam. Some call this disease Islamophobia. But the problem is they are not ready to cure the disease. When some one attacks a person, he would react. And we cannot gauge the intensity of the reaction. It is natural instinct to react. It has nothing to do

with the proclivities of religious indoctrination. Call it radicalism or Orthodox viewpoint.

This kind of outrageous and sacreligious conduct would evoke such reaction. We must avoid all kind of insinuation and provocations. We are paying the price of this insensible act of Charlie Hebdo. France claims to be a liberal democracy, but has acted in shallow manner to defend the liberty. By erecting statute of Liberty, one does not become a liberal. Perhaps it has not realized the consequences of this unbridled freedom.

We strongly condemn this outrageous and disgusting attitude, and utter disregard of

civility. It is promoting hatred, and provoking communal clash between the western and eastern civilizations. It has become glaring example of indifference. The Jinn has come out of the bottle, and it would not be easy to put it back in the bottle. We must change our ways, and pay respect to others point of view. The reality is, this ugliness has marred the progress of inter-faith harmony and cooperation We do not want to see it disintegrated and degenerated.

Let us build it up in the greater interest of the humanity. We need to dispel the fears of the people.

Istanbul, Jan 20, IRNA Terrorism and discord among various Islamic sects have expanded to such vast dimensions that involvement of aliens hands in them is quite obvious, Iran Parliament Speaker Ali Larijani said here Tuesday on sidelines of Islamic Inter-Parliamentary Union (IIPU).

This conference has routine annual programs and is convened to organize the inter-parliamentary affairs of the Islamic countries, as well as surveying the major issues with which the Muslim World is entangled with today and will be faced with in the future, he said in a meeting with the press right after his arrival in Istanbul.

The IIPU deals with the major challenges of the Muslim World and explores ways to

Larijani: Aliens are determined to divide Muslimsachieve sustainable peace and security, he said.

Many of the challenges with which the Muslim World is entangled are imported and some of them are defi nitely due to the intrigues by the aliens, added Larijani.

The Iranian top parliamentarian reiterated that the general challenges of the Muslims -- terrorism and injuring the sentiments of the Muslims -- are designed and conspired outside the

Muslim World. He stressed that the Islamic parliament speakers can, if

they will sincerely share views, affect the decisionmaking in their countries.

The IIPU was established in 1999 based on an initiative by Iran. It seeks to strengthen parliamentary cooperation among Islamic countries in order to deal with the challenges facing the Muslims worldwide. IRNA

    THE TIMES OF LEAGUE3

US President Barack Obama Tuesday, in his only public engagement during his three-day India visit, stressed on the right of freedom of individuals to profess, practice and propagate religion and said it is important for India with its multiplicity of faiths to uphold this fundamental right.

Addressing a town hall style meeting at the Siri Fort Auditorium here, that had a large audience of young people, the US president spoke extensively on the rights enshrined for people in the Indian and American constitutions. He said nations are the strongest when it treats all its citizens as gods children, all equal and worthy.

Referring to the diversity of the faith in India, he said Mahatma Gandhi had referred to the diversity in faiths in the country as beautiful fl owers of the same garden and branches of the same majestic tree.

He said in India, like in the US, diversity is our strength and we have to guard against any division

Indias success depends on not letting religion splinter country: Obamaalong sectarian or religious lines.

He said that in every country upholding this fundamental freedom is the responsibility of the governments and also of every person.

Obama said that both he and Michelle follow the Christian faith but there have been times when people have questioned his faith -- in a reference to his name, Barack Obama, which is often seen as a Muslim name and many have said that his father, who was originally from Kenya before he came to the US to the study, was from the Muslim faith.

He said he sees the intolerance in minds and the terror perpetrated by those who profess to be standing by their faiths when in effect they are betraying it - alluding to the Islamic State and other Islamist militant groups that are indulging in violence in the name of religion.

He said in society religion is used to very often tap into the darker impulses of the human mind.

    Referring to a gunman killing

six people at a Sikh gurudwara in Wisconsin in 2012, he said and in our moment of shared grief our two countries reaffi rmed that basic truth that we must adhere today to the tenet that every person has the right to practice their faith as they choose, or to practise no faith at all, free from persecution, and fear and discrimination.

He said the peace that we seek in the world begins in human hearts and one should rejoice in the beauty of every soul which is part of the differences in religion.

He said for India it will be

more important to uphold the fundamental freedom of religion as, with its diversity, it was an example for the rest of the world.

Nowhere is it more important than in India... Nowhere is it going to be more necessary that the foundational value be upheld. India will succeed so long as it is not splintered along lines of religious faith, splinter along any lines and it is unifi ed as one nation; and all Indians whatever their faith go to the movies and applaud actors like Shah Rukh Khan or athletes like Milkha Singh and Mary Kom, he said.

The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been facing criticism over its silence and failure to rein in fringe right-wing elements that have been indulging in religious hate and in campaigns of re-conversion - dubbed ghar wapasi or homecoming - of Muslims and Christians who they allege had been forcibly converted from Hindusim.

Obama wound up his visit Tuesday afternoon to leave for Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

Muslim leaders and organisations from various schools of thought came together on a common platform to launch a campaign here to eradicate evils from the society.

The eight-day Eradication of evils campaign was launched with a public meeting here Sunday night.

Addressing a huge gathering of men and women at Khilwat Ground in the old city, the Islamic scholars voiced concern over the fast spreading evils like alcohol, drug addiction, interest, dowry, and immorality.

The speakers called on all Muslims, especially the youth, to not only protect themselves from this fl ood of evils but also save

Hyderabads Muslim groups launchEradication of evils drive

others by participating in such movements.

Expressing concern over misuse of social networking sites by youth to indulge in immoral activities, they felt that instead of using technology as a tool for development, the new generation itself has become a tool in the hands of such sites.

They underlined the need to evolvr a mechanism with the participation of all to help poor Muslims and thus save them from exploitation by fi nancers.

Renowned Islamic scholar Maulana Mufti Sadiq Mohiuddin Faheem, who presided over the meeting, advised parents to ensure that their children are educated and trained in accordance with the

teachings of the Holy Quran.Khaja Arifuddin, president of

Jamaat-e-Islami, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha units, said that the Quran describes Muslim ummah as the best nation produced for mankind, who enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong.

He said it was high time that the community realised its responsibility and worked to fulfi l it. M.K.M. Zafar, president of Jamaats Greater Hyderabad unit, said they made the campaign a collective effort by involving all sects of the community.

During the campaign, Jamaat would organise various programmes for college students and youth and create awareness against the evils.

Vande Mataram should not be imposed: Minister

Union minister of state for HRD Upendra Kushwaha said Sunday that singing Vande Mataram should not be forced on any one in the country. Vande Mataram should not be imposed on any one to sing and no one should be forced to sing it, Kushwaha, who is president of the Rashtriya Lok Samta Party, an ally of the BJP in Bihar, told media here following a dispute in a village school in Gopalganj district after some villagers banned the singing of Vande Mataram.

Kushwaha said that to sing or not to sing Vande Mataram should be left to peoples own decision.

Early this month, Kushwaha had said that he was not in favour of any law to check conversions as there are already provisions to check coercion and allurement for conversion.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoan on Jan. 21 called on Muslim states to speak with one voice against terrorism and racism.

Addressing a meeting of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) in Istanbul, Erdoan said Islamic states had to defeat the successors of the iconic British offi cer Lawrence of Arabia who were seeking to disrupt the Middle East.

His comments came ahead of a tour of Ethiopia, Somalia and Djibouti scheduled to begin on Jan. 21.

Erdoan said acts of terrorism never bind the Muslims nor Islamic countries and called on the Muslim world to engage in self-criticism to defi ne a united route in order to address the challenges.

When the Muslim world remains silent and every sect stands behind their own sympathizers, others are

Turkish President Erdoan urges Islamic unity against modern Lawrences

stepping in: Terrorists and modern Lawrences, he said.

British offi cer T.E. Lawrence, better known as Lawrence of Arabia, helped Arab leaders fi ght a guerrilla insurgency against the forces of the Ottoman Empire in the desert during World War I.

Erdoan has in the past raised up the ghost of Lawrence as a symbol of Western meddling in

the Middle East.We may be speaking different

languages, we may be coming from different geographies, and we may have different ethnic roots, he said. (But) we must put aside all differences among us in the face of terrorism and racism, he said.

Erdoan lashed out at the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) jihadists who have

captured large swathes of Iraq and Syria right up to the Turkish border which he said was killing Muslims on the pretext of Islam.

We must fi rst check and question ourselves. Foreigners are coming, bombing and killing. Why are we leaving problems to others to deal with instead of solving them among ourselves?

Erdogan also criticized the U.N. Security Council for making decisions on issues that concern the Muslim world, without having a Muslim member among its permanent members.

Is there any single Muslim country among the fi ve [permanent members of the UN Security Council]? Is the entire world surrendered to the fi ve members? Can justice be there? he asked.

We are 56 countries. Wont we question what our function is. Islamic countries make up almost one third of the United Nations, he told the OIC.

    THE TIMES OF LEAGUE7

A write up on the history of the Indian Union Muslim League is incomplete if one neglects to write about Rt.Honble S.M.Pasha Saheb, who was a member of the Council of the state (as the Rajya Sabha was known as the pre-partition days). He was the president of the Madras Presidency Muslim League. Incidentally, it is made known that Madras Presidency consisted of the present four states viz., Tamil Nadu, Andhra, Telangana and Kerala.

S.M.Pasha Saheb was a Lawyer by profession but he devoted his time, his energy and other Allah bestowed his time energies and facilities to render service to the Milleth-e-Islamiya. When the

Rt.Honble S.M.PASHA the forgottenMuslim League Leader

S.M.PASHA [Convener , All India Forum Of Muslim Journalists , Chennai]

British Government felt it is no longer for it to rule over India , by DIVIDING Hindus and Muslims, it resolved to divide the country itself and rule in absentia. it okeyed the formation of PAKISTAN, When the decision became a fait accompli and Pakistan actually came into existence, Muslim Leaguers in India wanted their beloved organization to be partitioned likewise and a separate Muslim League be established to serve the Muslim Minority Community in India. Hence the very last Meeting of the ALL INDIA MUSLIM LEAGUE was held in Karachi on the 17th of December 1947, with the ailing

Quaide Azam Jinnah presiding. It was in this meeting,

S.M.Pasha Saheb Came forward with two proposals both of which were unanimously approved. One was to partition the party into two parts (1) the PAKISTAN part and (2) the INDIAN UNION part. For the INDIAN UNION Part, Pasha Saheb proposed the name Mohammed Ismail Saheb (who was then the president of the Madras Presidency Muslim League) to be in charge. the proposal was unanimously accepted.

It was later on to be precise, on the 10th of March 1948 the party resolved to devote its attention

only to the social, educational and economic development of Indian Muslims. Dabbling in politics was not its agenda then. had the I.U.M.L continued its keep off politics it looks as if the social, educational and economic conditions of this minority community might have been better off. Be that what it may, what the Quaide Millath did for Indian Muslims, none so far bettered and none can, I Vehemently assert. May Allah Subhanathallah admit his noble soul in the Jannath Firdouse and may He in His Infi nite Grace, bestow Muslim Leaguers, the good sense and moral courage to tread the political path shown by him.

The Uttar Pradesh government will renovate the neglected red sandstone structure here that was once the rich library of Mughal emperor Aurangzebs brother Dara Shikoh, a great scholar who sought to explore the commonality between Islam and Hinduism and translated Hindu scriptures, including the Upanishad, into Persian.

Historians say Mughal history would have been radically different had Dara Shikoh, had he not been killed, ascended the throne instead of the more fundamentalist Aurangzeb.

The funds for the renovation project will come from the World Banks tourism initiative. The principal secretary of the state government, Sanjeev Mittal, who was here last week, has ordered the conservation of the heritage library. Agra District Magistrate Pankaj Kumar has asked experts to draw up a plan which will soon be sent to the government.

Conservationists in Agra had long demanded the restoration and reopening of Dara Shikoh library that has been in shambles in the heart of the Taj city.

    People may have forgotten

Dara Shikohs neglected library may become tourist spotBrij Khandelwalabout its existence. But during

Shah Jahans reign, it was a centre of scholarship and excellence, said historian Raj Kishore Raje. Sufi saints and scholars regularly met and discussed mysticism and theology, with Dara Shikoh himself initiating the discussions, he added.

Dara Shikoh (1615-59) was Shah Jahans eldest son and would have succeeded him but for being defeated in battle and then being assassinated at the instance of his brother Aurangzeb. This was during an intense power struggle following Shah Jahans illness, leading to the emperors ouster in 1658.

Dara Shikoh, whose name in Persian means possessing such magnifi cence as Darius, set up libraries in several places including one in Delhi. But the best known library was in Agra, also called his haveli. It was taken over by the British in 1881 and became the Town Hall, according to the 1921 Agra Gazetteer.

Dara Shikoh was a great scholar of Persian and Sanskrit. Despite the ravages of wars and his involvement in a series of political and domestic crises due

to Shah Jahans ill health, he still found time to translate and write books. His chief mission was to explore the commonality between Hinduism and Islam and how the gap could be bridged.

Several important works, including the Upanishads, were translated into Persian. The library had separate enclosures for book binders, painters and translators. Dara bought thousands of books from Europe for this library.

The Braj Mandal Heritage Conservation Society has urged the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) to acquire the building and take up restoration work before opening it to the public.

This structure does not boast of power or royalty but symbolises the spirit of Sulah Kul, Din-e-Ilahi and the later day secularism. The library stands as a testimony to the high level of intellectualism and recognition of academic excellence, Society president Surendra Sharma said.

The red sandstone library building, which should have been conserved and protected by the ASI, is now with the Agra Municipal Corporation. Parts of it have been sold to traders at the Moti Ganj

Mandi while other parts have been encroached upon. In its heyday, it was a beautiful building, with airy shelves for the books, provision of light and air, huge halls and scholarly ambience.

The central hall with highly decorative painted windows, stone-carved shelves for books with proper ventilation and air passages and natural light fi lters speak of the taste and passion of Dara Shikoh. Evidence of this is still visible though the area has been reduced to a wholesale market of rice, jaggery and sugar.

During British Raj, the building was briefl y used for the high court and then for government offi ces and the local body.

An over 300-year-old map of the area at the Agra Universitys K.M. Institute brings out the strategic location of the library.

An Archaeological Survey of India offi cial said the property belonged to the Municipal Corporation and it should restore it. But others want the ASI to acquire the building and open it to the public so that the rich literary and academic legacy of Dara Shikoh become known.

The President of India, Shri Pranab Mukherjee met children selected for the National Bravery Awards 2014 at Rashtrapati Bhavan today (January 22, 2015). The scheme of National Awards for Bravery was started by Indian Council for Child Welfare (ICCW) to give due recognition to children who distinguish themselves by performing outstanding deeds of bravery and meritorious service and to inspire other children to emulate their example.

The Awardees are invited to Delhi where the Prime Minister of India presents the awards on the eve of Republic Day. The children then take part in the Republic Day Parade.

The 17-year-old girl from Uttar Pradesh is a story of bravery and strong determination. Less than one year ago, Resham Fatma met most horrifi c incident of her life. She not only survived the acid attack but shown courage and brought the culprit to book. A year later she has been selected for the coveted National Bravery Award for putting on a brave face while fi ghting off her tormentor.

On February 1, 2014, Lucknow resident Fatma was on the way to her tuition class when her uncle (mothers cousin) picked her up at knife-point. He drove her to a highway and threatened her to marry him. When she refused, he poured sulphuric acid over her head. Despite suffering serious burns, Resham gathered all her strength and took an auto rickshaw and reached a nearby police station. Fatma says she wants to become an IAS offi cer.

Along with Fatma, 24 children 8 girls and 16 boys have been selected for the National Bravery Awards for the year 2014. Four of the Awards will be given posthumously.

Socialism, secularism hold country together: Punjab CMPunjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Friday said that the

twin principles of socialism and secularism formed the underlying spirit of the Indian Constitution and any deviation from these two basic tenets would be against the interest of the country.

India being a land of diversities is endowed with people hailing from various religions, castes, creeds and linguistic backgrounds. Our forefathers had laid special thrust on the concepts of socialism and secularism in our Constitution, Badal said, talking to reporters after an event in Kapurthala district, around 160 km from here.

Badal was reacting to a recent controversy over these words being omitted from advertisements issued by the central government on the occasion of the Republic Day.

Badal said the ideals of socialism and secularism were an integral part of our polity.

So, there is hardly any need for even debating on this issue, Badal said.

Citing the example of Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Badal said that even great monarchs like him had made the principle of secularism an essential part of their governance.

No country can survive without these doctrines as they fi rmly hold its social fabric together, he added.

The Shiromani Akali Dal, of which Badal is the patron, is part of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government at the Centre.
