Council Clippings

September 21, 2020

1. Chairman Bryce Arkema called the meeting to order and read from Joshua 1 – a fitting chal-

lenge to Joshua and to the council to seek to lead in such a way as to carry out God’s plans.

The needs of many in the church and community were lifted up in prayer.

2. It was reported that both the parsonage roofing project and the carpeting projects are com-

plete. Bruxvoort’s Decorating has agreed to come back and address items that may be not-

ed in the coming weeks.

3 Elder and Deacon teams reported on the various family visits held in August. Several visits

remain to be completed in the coming weeks and months as COVID conditions subside.

Many positive comments were received.

4. Recommendations from the Executive Committee regarding continued meeting under

COVID conditions were reviewed and approved by consensus. More of the church will be

opened up as we head into fall and winter weather; simultaneously additional steps will be

taken and encouraged to maintain a safe environment given the recent increase in COVID in

the area.

5. Considerable discussion was held and a motion considered outlining a specific response to

the recent COVID incidence and move to on-line learning at LS Schools. After discussion the

motion was defeated and the Education Committee along with leaders of the various groups

were affirmed as having latitude to make appropriate decisions on a situation by situation

basis that generally follows the letter sent to parents at the outset of the year.

6. Council members shared several positive comments that have been received regarding the

communion celebrations in August and September.

7. A committee recommendation to subscribe to the Breeze church management software at a

cost of $50/month was considered and approved. The software will allow for multiple items

that are a part of the routine operations of the church to be managed from within a single

software solution. Some of the items that can be tracked include the membership directory,

giving records, e-mail and cell phone records. Group e-mails and text messages can also be

originated from the solution. The solution has been researched for several months and posi-

tive feedback received from area churches using the solution.

8. It was noted that the annual Turkey Bowl event will be moved up one week this year.

9. Several items of correspondence were reviewed and considered.

10. Following the singing of “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus”, Steve Fopma closed in prayer.

A baby daughter was born into the home of Oney and Katie Bruxvoort Arkema on September

2, 1930. Hermina was the eighth of twelve children born into this home. She was baptized in the

Sully CRC and was a lifelong member here. Hermina received her education in the Sully Chris-

tian School.

It was at a skating party in Grinnell that she met Hank Rolffs, her future husband. They were

married at the home of her parents on December 13, 1949. They farmed near Lynnville and

later near Taintor, where they developed some life-long friendships. They became the parents

of six children. In 1989 Hank and Hermina moved into Sully where Henry became a trucker and

Hermina practiced her cleaning skills in several homes in Grinnell. As their family grew, they

loved following them in all their activities. Their grandchildren knew that grandpa and grand-

ma would be in the bleachers cheering them on, and Hermina continued this after Hank passed

away.

Hermina enjoyed Wednesday morning breakfast/coffee time with friends and Sunday

dinners at the Vander Griends. On Friday night, it was supper in Newton (Denver omelet)

and games with Ernie Dieleman and friends. She also liked game night at church, and she had

a ready smile as she served for Coffee Break at church. Hank and Hermina enjoyed traveling

together and with friends, and spending time with siblings.

When diagnosed with cancer, she faced it with dignity and courage. She entered her

heavenly home on August 16, 2020, just shy of her 90th birthday. Those left to mourn her

passing are her children Randy (Aleda), Merlin (Nancy), Dale (Carolyn), Brent (Brenda),

Scott (Valerie) Rolffs and Rose Kiehl along with 18 grandchildren, 26 great-grandchildren,

siblings and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her husband,

daughter-in-law Sue Rolffs, grandson, Matthew Rolffs, granddaughter Laura Rolffs, and great-

granddaughters Amarie Rolffs and Evelyn Voss, along with other relatives and friends.

Funeral services were held on August 20, 2020, at the Sully CRC. Pastor Brian Ochsner

officiated and Darwin Van Wyk was the organist. The congregation sang "Amazing Grace"

and "What A Day That Will Be." Special music was provided by Alex Van Wyngarden who

sang "My Jesus I Love Thee." Hermina requested "Who You Say I Am." Casket bearers were

children with grandchildren serving as honorary bearers. Interment was at the Sully Cemetery

where Alaina Archer sang "I Will Rise" accompanied by Trent Rolffs on the guitar. Memorials

designated for the Sully Christian School.

One by one we leave this earth. May we all meet again in our heavenly home.

In Memory of Hermina Rolffs

Friends at Sully CRC,

Thank you for your faithful prayer and financial support of our ministry in Nigeria. Though we

have not yet been able to travel to Nigeria because of the coronavirus pandemic, I am now

teaching a full course load for the college's fall semester via Google Classrooms. Schools in

Nigeria are not able to hold in-person classes, which means all instruction is online. That pre-

sents challenges for some students who have limited internet access. We appreciate your

prayers for the college, its faculty and students as we do our best to provide a sound biblical-

theological education to future church and kingdom leaders in Nigeria and throughout West

Africa.

God bless,

Family Faith Formation Tip: Research shows that

children are more likely to grow in faith if they have the

support of at least five involved adults (in addition to

family members). Who are (or who could be) your

child’s “faithful five”? For more on this concept, check

out The Sticky Faith Guide for Your Family (Zondervan

2014). (Faith Formation Ministries; crcna.org/
