Job 7:r-4, 6-7 / r Corinthians 9:r.6-19, zz-23 | Mark 1:2f39

lllness, depression, and misfortune can make us feel alone and afraid. We

wonder whether anyone can understand what we're going through or helpus.

The first five chapters of Mark's Gospel give us several healing stories inwhich Jesus, by touch or word, restores individuals to wholeness. He casts

out demons, as we heard last week. He cures the sick, like Simon's mother-in-law. The stories confirm what our faith tells us-that God's healing poweris for all people and that Good News lifts us and gives us joy.

But for those touched by the loneliness of infirmity of mind, body, or spirit, the stories alone might not be enough. lnstead, the fervent prayer of thepsalmist might be our grace: "The Lord...[heals] the brokenhearted" (Psalm

t47:z-3). Or, our peace might rest in the simple knowledge of two oftenoverlooked lines in the Gospel: "They brought him many who werepossessed by demons" (Mark 8:16) and "The whole town was gathered atthe door" (Mark r:33). Simply put, everyone came, and no one was alone.

No matter what our condition, we are not alone.

Christ is there in our pain and suffering to give us the grace to endure. We'renot always cured by human standards, but Christ helps us find wholeness no

matter what we suffer-and in him we find our peace and our joy.

lsaiah told us that the name given to the Messiah was Emmanuel, whichmeans "God with us."

ln Christ, we see the evidence that God's promise has come true.

d e ar PAD Rf,

At my church, some people take the uotiue candles out of the holders

and place them next to the statues and icons. Does this make the saint

or God pay more attention to the petition? And isn't it afire hazard?

Vigil lights, commonly known as votive candles, are usuallylit whcn a person seeks some favor from the Lord or a saint'sintercession. Lighting a candle is a way of extending one'sprayer and showing solidarity with the person on whosebehalf the prayer is offered.

In the lighting of candles we remember and truly live thewords of our Lord, "I am the light of the world" (John 8:12).We burn candles to symbolize our prayers' rising to heavenday and night; prayers for the saints' intercession are also

common because of their friendship with God in heaven.Saints are powerful intercessors.

God hears all prayers uttered in sinceriry. Burning a candle as

we pray doesn't make that prayer more important thanprayers offered without a candle; neither does moving thecandle to the front of the line.

if your church has made sure that the placing of the votivecandles complies with local fire regulations, you have noworries about setting a fire with vigil lights.
