BRITISH ASPARAGUS FESTIVAL

www.asparafest.co.uk 31 May & 1 June 2014

Asparatastic Asparafest!

It is a great pleasure as Chair of the Asparagus

Festival CIC to see Asparafest return for its second

year. The event is a great symbol of the

importance of this magnificent vegetable to the

town and Vale. We should not underestimate the

benefits that Asparafame bring to the area in

terms of commerce and tourism.

Asparafest is an anchor event of the asparagus festival season, but watch out

for further events throughout the remainder of the season, including the

Asparawriting Festival, The Evesham Morris Festival, Bretforton Church

Asparagus Auction and Droitwich Food Festival.

Further details, including Gus’ next appearances, can be found on the British

Asparagus Festival website: www.britishasparagusfestival.org

The festival runs from 23 April – 21 June.

Chairman, British Asparagus Festival CIC

ASPARAGUS KING & QUEEN

www.asparafest.co.uk 31 May & 1 June 2014

In ancient times Vale asparagus was prized by all the crowned heads of

Europe who would vie with one another for the pick of the crop. Today

we have introduced a competition to find our very own reigning

monarchs of the Asparafest.

Any pretender to the throne of the King should be prepared to face

down his opposition by

displaying the best pair of green

legs this side of Bretforton!

These legs may be covered in

green tights or green makeup ,

which can be supplied. The

subjects of the kingdom of

Asparafest will vote for the

winner.

No King should be without a consort so the Queen of Asparagus

competition is open to any lady wearing items of green clothing. The'

would be Queen may of course use green makeup too if she wishes.

Again the loyal subjects will be asked to vote.

Anyone wishing to enter should give their

details in at the Wychavon stall on Saturday.

Sumptuous prizes will be given to the

winners, as well as the honour or returning to

crown next year’s King and Queen!

Roast Asparagus & Oyster

Mushroom Salad with

Tahini Orange Dressing

Prep Time: 20 minutes / Cook Time: 30 minutes / Total Time: 50 minutes / Yield: 2-3

Ingredients

The Barley: 125g pearl barley / 400ml water / 1/2 a vegetable stock cube The Dressing: 3 tablespoons tahini / 2 teaspoons soy sauce / Juice of 1 orange The Roast Veggies: 1 teaspoon oil / 1 pack of tender asparagus, trimmed / 1 pack of oyster mushrooms, hard stems removed & flesh torn into largish pieces that will lay flat in the pan.

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 200/180 fan/gas 6/400. Rinse the pearl barley in cold water then bring to a boil with the water and stock cube before turning down to a simmer. Cook for 30-40 minutes, or until it is soft to bite. To make the dressing, pop the 3 ingredients in a small bowl and mix well until they have all combined and it looks creamy and delicious. Meanwhile, heat the oil in a large baking tin until it is shimmering. Tip in the asparagus and oyster mushrooms, coating each side in a little oil. Cook for 10 minutes, shaking the pan vigorously halfway through the cooking time. When the barley is cooked through, mix the veggies through and dish up onto plates. Serve with the dressing on the side.
