Greetings YCPASR Members,

As I ponder what to write in this issue of our newsletter, I am also pondering the start of summer. Graduations, Memorial Day, July 4th, summer vacations and picnics are on the horizon. As you are planning your calendar for the summer don't forget to include our July 31 summer luncheon.

Hopefully, you will be able to join us for this meeting. I have invited PASR's new CEO, Mark McKillop, to attend our summer luncheon and at the writing of this message, he is planning to join us. In addition, the director for our Region 4 PASR, Jean Young, will be joining us to provide a brief region update. This is a reminder that this meeting will have our summer auction; the proceeds from this will support our scholarship fund. It was wonderful being able to give away two scholarships at the last meeting and to be able to continue to do this we must replenish the fund. Our program committee has arranged for the Belmont Theater Reading Troupe to provide some comical skits.

What would a message from me be if I wouldn't include a "Help Wanted" section. As you all know, we are still looking for a president elect, but since our last meeting I have become aware of the need for 2-3 people to sell tickets for the money drawings that we have at each of our meetings. Wishing each of you a safe and enjoyable summer!

YCPASR 2 SUMMER 2017

TRAVEL PAST……….Wildlife, Wild Horses, and Wallop’s Island

Our group enjoyed a relaxing trip to the Eastern Shore of Virginia in May. After a scenic boat ride to Tangier Island, we ate a delicious family style meal prepared by area locals. Some toured the quaint island in golf carts before we returned to the mainland.

On Chincoteague, we enjoyed strolling the small town shops and sampling local fare—including lots of ice cream! Known as the setting for Marguerite Henry’s famous novel Misty of Chincoteague, local guides both on our bus tour and on a cruise around the island provided background information about the wild ponies and other species on Assateague’s National Wildlife Refuge.

This is your opportunity to visit historic Bedford Springs, to appreciate the weaving skill involved in creating 16th and 17th century coverlets, and to experience the architectural wonder of Frank Lloyd

Wright’s Falling Water. A two-course lunch at the famous Omni Bedford Springs Resort will be a real treat! And in October, we should be able to see the autumn colors of the Laurel Highlands. This popular trip still has openings for several people so we can fill two buses. Due date for payment is June 30, so let Lin Armitage know right away.October 12, 7 AM to 9:15. . Admissions and lunch are included for $183.

YCPASR 3 SUMMER 2017

If the little white church in Loganville could speak, it would certainly thank Brenda Shearer for being a life-long member. That thank-you would recognize the many hours that Brenda has given to help Loganville Christ Lutheran Church thrive—hours that helped earn her the 2016 Outstanding Volunteer of the Year award from the York Chapter of PASR.

Brenda characterizes her church as being very giving and generous, and as chairperson of the Ministry in Daily Life/Social Committee, she is qualified

to make that assessment. Her committee focuses on the church’s outreach projects. This summer, they’re collecting items for Veterans’ Helping Hand. Bell Family Shelter has often benefited from their generosity: an Advent tree filled with baby items, plus pillows and umbrellas (for residents who walk to work or wait for buses). They collected art supplies for the Lehman Center and health kits and school kits for World Relief. A recent sandwich sale cleared $500.00 to benefit a congregant.

The committee serves pancake breakfasts and lunches a few times each year, as well as funeral lunches and Lenten suppers. A big fundraiser occurs during the annual Christmas in Loganville event, when the church makes and sells 125 apple dumplings, their famous pork barbecue, and soups. Ham and bean, vegetable crab, and chicken corn soup were sold. A local farmer invites church members to pick, at no charge, all the corn left behind by his machinery, which they then freeze for future soups.

Brenda is also in charge of the baked goods sale during the Christmas event, at which she sells her famous peanut butter fudge. The recipe is from an old church cookbook and she shares it with us so we can all get our fudge fix. Grab a saucepan and, over medium heat, cook 1 lb. confectioners sugar and 1/2 cup of milk, stirring often, until it starts to boil. Remove from heat and let stand, undisturbed, for five minutes. Stir in 12 oz. of smooth peanut butter, then 7 oz. of marshmallow creme. Pour into a greased 9” X 13” pan.

Brenda also helps to visit about thirteen shut-in church members, and she sang in the choir for 50 years. She is a highly organized person and that quality, plus years of writing lesson plans, prepared her well for her church responsibilities. This gal, who says she’s a jack-of-all-trades with no specialty, certainly accomplishes a lot.

She started writing lesson plans after earning bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Shippensburg University. She taught second grade at the old Yorkshire building in the York Suburban School District for five years. After a break to stay home with her son and daughter, she taught fourth grade at the Loganville building in the Dallastown Area School District from 1985-2003.

YCPASR benefits from Brenda’s volunteer hours, since she co-chairs our scholarship committee. She feels that recent changes in applications and evaluation procedures were timely and necessary. Brenda is also a member of the Social Service Committee, which visits YCPASR members who are homebound or are nursing home residents.

Brenda and husband Butch are great travelers. Every other year, they and a group of friends take a major trip—last year, Alaska; next year, a river cruise in France. One memorable trip took the Shearers to Mt. Rushmore, a long-standing item on Brenda’s bucket list. Other jaunts included Hawaii, Mexico, Canadian Rockies, Costa Rica and Ireland.

Now it’s time to reveal some little known facts about Brenda! How many of you know that she has a French minor on her college diploma? Or that, as a kid, she broke her arm three times in the same place? Or about her passion for York Fair waffles and ice cream?

Brenda, like most of us in education, loved her job and the joys and rewards it brought. One of her students, however, didn’t quite understand all aspects of the job. One December, two administrators visited every classroom to deliver teachers’ pay checks and wish everyone a happy holiday. They were no sooner out the door, when one student asked, almost incredulously, “Do you get paid for doing this?” Don’t kids say the darnedest things!

SUMMER AUCTION

The best place to keep up with all the YCPASR activities and news is our web page. If you haven’t checked it out yet, here are simple directions to get you there.

HOW DO I ACCESS THE YCPASR WEBPAGE?

1. First of all, you need to connect to the internet using either your computer, iPad or cell phone. Usually, the simplest way is to open a browser (a doorway to the internet) by clicking on its icon (little picture). You can use one of several different browsers— Safari, Google Chrome or Firefox. Any of these will work just fine.

2. Once a new window opens, find the dialog box and type in the URL (internet address) for our page. Start typing where you see the cursor (a blinking vertical line) right next to the icon of a magnifying class.

3. Type in ycpasr.weebly.com. It should look like this picture. Then hit the Return or Enter key.

4. Now you should see the YCPASR home page. You can click on any of the links (submenus under the page’s title) to get information about travel, news, forms, etc.

Annual members should have received their membership renewal in the form of a postcard. Renewals are due by July 1, 2017, and no reminder notices will be sent. I have only received names and addresses of school retirees from Northeastern, Southern York, Spring Grove, and York School of Technology. If you have any other names and addresses, please see that I receive them.

Mary Ann Mastroianni is busy assembling baskets and boxes for our big summer raffle. The proceeds from this raffle benefit the scholarship fund, so we are counting on you for donations to make this event a success. If you have items to donate, please call Mary Ann (428-1561) to arrange pick up. If you are assembling a basket yourself or with friends, please let Mary Ann know what is included so she can prepare labels. And even if you think you don’t need another thing, bring a few extra dollars to the meeting so you can participate in supporting the scholarship fund. You can always take a chance to win a gift card, or you may discover a prize that you really cannot live without.
