the essence, and every intended action is spurred by one word: urgent! The fighting that broke out on May 23 between militants and government troops sparked the Marawi siege, which has driven thousands of families from their homes to temporary shelters where food, water and space are hard to come by.

With this in mind, Community Service Dir. Chris Ferareza wasted no time in organizing a relief mission to bring badly-needed supplies to the evacuees. The meeting began with Invocator Mundy Gonzalez giving thanks

for the privilege of service and a prayer to “provide us with open minds and a steady purpose to make the most of the talent You have given us and lead us to the fields of endeavor where we can best serve.”

Announcements. PP Freddie Borromeo made a report on the launch of the year’s final supplementary feeding in Pililia, Rizal, with three modules covering 90 undernourished kids. Explaining that this nutritional intervention prevents stunted physical and mental growth that often results in poor academic standing and could even lead to brain damage, he added that he will soon be giving away bicycles to the kids and thanked Pres. David Ackerman, the directors and club members for their support of the project which he chairs.

President’s Time. Pres. David, back from a business-pleasure trip to Russia, began his rather lengthy “time” by thanking PE Jun Jun Dayrit for holding the fort in his absence, specifically for presiding over two meetings, including an offsite one, at the Stepping Stone School in Sucat, Paranaque. Noting the positive feedback on said meeting, he expressed the hope that PE Jun Jun may consider conducting more offsite meetings during his term in, say, the headquarters of our project partners and/or beneficiaries as these engagements bring us closer to the people we work with and for and bring a new dimension to the service we deliver.

He also thanked Community Service Dir. Chris Ferareza for orchestrating the Club’s relief mission for the families displaced by the military conflict in Marawi City, citing the figures—406 bags of relief goods, 850 blankets, 1,170 towels, and 300 RC Makati t-shirts. He thanked Eddie Galvez for coordinating with the Office of the Vice President for the transport of the goods from the seaport to the distribution centers; and Derrick Tan, general manager of St. Giles Hotel and about-to-be-inducted Club member, for his generous donation of blankets and towels, and for already getting himself integrated into the Club. He then thanked everyone mentioned in Dir. Chris’s thank-you message on Viber as having offered help and used their connections, saying “Truly, if we put all of our resources and connections together, we can achieve wonderful things.”

Responding to PP Freddie’s ‘thank-you’ to him and the board for supporting the supplementary program, he said he need not be thanked, and that it is PP Freddie who deserves our thanks for the project’s nearly 100% success rate, meaning that after six months of feeding, the children graduate from the ranks of the mal/undernourished to

that of the healthy. He also

reported on the June 2 Friday Night Lights, the last one for his term, which he co-hosted with PE Jun Jun, who marked his birthday on June 1. He announced that he has volunteered to chair the FNL Committee in the upcoming year to make sure that the monthly First Friday fellowship is carried on with “great sounds, great food, and a great boost.”

The next event he invited everyone to was the district awards night on June 23rd at the ballroom of Dusit Hotel—a very important occasion, he was quick to emphasize—as it is the time when the district confers awards on clubs that had worked hardest during the year and made a difference for our beneficiaries.

One event Pres. David wants full attendance in is the Club Awards on June 27, the last Tuesday of the year. It’s a ladies’ day, meaning the Anns are invited (some of them will be recognized too). Please come, he supplicated, and cheer for the members who will be honored with awards of recognition and appreciation.

There are two other upcoming events to which everyone is invited:

One, the District Handover on July 1st at the Manila Hotel during which outgoing District Governor Edna Sutter will pass on the mantle of responsibility for the district to incoming DG Ed Afzelius to mark a new chapter in journey of District

Ou t g o i n g Pres. David Ackerman and

Incoming Pres. Jun Jun Dayrit teamed up to host the year’s final Friday Night Lights (FNL) on 2nd June at the RCM Clubhouse—Pres. David, to put a period to FNL, Series of 2016-2017, PE Jun Jun, to celebrate his birthday on June 1st.

Since it was a birthday party, there was pancit, traditional symbol of a long life, luscious lechon to feast on, and a cake(broughtbyTereBoyer)tosweet-endthe evening with. And a wide spread of party food to savor – lumpiang shanghai, roast beef, beef salpicao, baked salmon, mixed veggies and, for dessert, chocolate, grapes and bananas. And wine, of course, to wash everything down with.

The turnout was good, with 19 Rotarians, eight Anns and a guest crammed in the lounge – Pres. David, PP Felix & Tessie Amparo, Dir. Louie & Tess Aseoche, IPDG Pepito Bengzon, PP Larry & Tere Boyer, Chito Cantada, PE

Jun Jun & Cecille Dayrit, Dir. Chris Ferareza, Eddie Galvez, PDG Sid & Tesha Garcia, Glenn Gatuslao, PDG Robert Kuan and soon-to-be-member Derrick Tan, Julian Lim, PP Rene & Lu Limjoco,

A happy way to close the curtain on another chapter of FNL.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record, let me reiterate our invite to join us on July 1 at the Manila Hotel for the District Handover, during which DG Edna Sutter will formally turn over to DGE Ed Afzelius the responsibility of supervising, guiding and assisting the clubs in the district.

We have reserved—and paid for—30 seats. It’s a formal affair, so those who signed up with the secretariat are advised to be accordingly guided as to attire.

*****Again, please red-mark July 7 on

your calendar and block it off as early as now for a very important RC Makati event. The occasion: our 52nd induction ceremony to install our 2017-2018 officers, directors and advisers led by PE Jun Jun Dayrit.

Induction Committee Chairman Louie Aseoche is working closely with Ann Cecille Dayrit on a program that is sure to invite awe and applause. Attire is Filipiniana—formal Barong Tagalog forus Rotarians and male guests, terno or Maria Clara or other Filipiniana dress for the ladies.

Let us all be there to lend support to PE Jun Jun and the incoming board, and infuse them with enough inspiration to last them the entire year.

3830. Of the Club’s 30-seat reservation for Rotarians and Anns, 15 have been taken, with the remaining 15 still up for grabs.

And two, our 52nd induction ball on July7,aFriday,attheRigodonBallroomofthe Peninsula Manila. The induction is the most important event in our calendar –and this year, Pres. David assured, it will be an

Supermarket set up in 2015 by then DG Pepito Bengzon came in handy once again, with Puregold taking the phoned-in order, packing the goods, and delivering them to the RC Makati Clubhouse.

As luck would have it, Derrick Tan, general manager of St.

individuals and organizations whom Dir. Chris tapped for help and who, together, made it all happen:

The Philippine Army, for transporting the goods from the RCM Clubhouse to the pier and for agreeing to carry them on a C130 to Iligan City; Sgt. Bernard Baldo of the Civil-Military Operations Group for coordinating the trucking schedule and requirements; and Fr. Rocky Evangelista of Tuloy Foundation, for connecting us to the Philippine Army. (The C130 leg didn’t push through, however, as there was a transport directive to prioritize troops before relief goods)

2Go Freight Center, for transporting the goods, with dispatch and free of charge, from Manila to Cagayan de Oro; Dennis Uy of 2Go for his quick/positive response to our request, and Chryss Damuy, CFO of Phoenix Petroleum, for connecting us to 2Go;

Office of Vice President Leni Robredo, for transporting the goods from the Cagayan de Oro pier to the evacuation/distribution centers in Marawi; and Eddie Galvez, for connecting us to the OVP;

PDG Tess Navales of District 3870 andRCIliganBayforcoordinatingthemission and supervising the relief ops; the D3879 Rotarians and Rotaractors for handling the actual distribution; and PDG Robert Kuan, for connecting us to PDG Tess;

St. Giles Hotel and GM Derrick Tan, for the generous donation of blankets and towels; PE Jun Jun Dayrit for coordinating the transport of the goods from the hotel to the club; and PDG Robert Kuan, for connecting us to Derrick;

Dir. Jun Palafox, for donating P10K to the relief fund; and

All the Rotarians who donated to the

Surigao Earthquake Fund, the leftover from which was used for the Marawi relief ops.

We also acknowledge and thank the Rotarians who connected or offered to connect us to helpful organizations: IPP Eddie Yap, to the PAL Foundation, Red Cross and to a congressman in Iligan; PP Roland Young and Ann Cecille Dayrit, to the PAL Foundation; Louie Fernandez, to Cebu Pacific; Wilfred Gui, to GMA Foundation; PE Jun Jun Dayrit, to SMC Foundation; PP Maita Manglapus of RC Mactan, to the Philippine Air Force. And Drexx Laggui for offering transport; and for the kind words of encouragement and support, PP Reggie Nolido, and from remote points on the globe, PP Roland Young and Pres. David Ackerman.

And of course, all credit to Dir. Chris Ferareza and COS Ron Dotaro who put the mission together and saw it through (and were all set to get on the C130 plane to personally deliver the goods to the Marawi evacuees) – with an air of urgency, fully aware that the people who needed the goods needed it at once.

The fighting rages on still; in fact, it has escalated to the point of getting US special forces to step in, a development that does not bode well for the residents of Marawi who continue to cower in fear in evacuation centers amid the direst conditions.

Yet, despite the turmoil the world is in, one truth will always stand out: it is the worst of times that brings out the best in people.

Giles Hotel who is soon to join the club on the invitation of PDG Robert Kuan, responded to Dir. Chris’ call for help with a generous donation of other must-haves – 850 blankets and 1,170 towels.

On June 4, PDG Tess Navales of District 3870 presided over the distribution of goods to some 600 families in evacuation centers in BarangayFuentes and Barangay Sagiaran, as wellas tohome-basedevacuees inBarangayTubod, APO, Marawi Renatal, and Villa Candida, among others. The clubs that participated in the relief mission were RC Carmen Valley, RC Iligan Maria Cristina, RCIliganBay,RCIliganEast,RCUptownIligan, RC Kalayaan and the Rotaract Clubof IliganBay, amongothers. Asidefrom the goods we sent, they gave away medicines and bottled water.

PDG Tess reported that she decided to give the RC Makati t-shirts to the volunteers instead of to the evacuees for fear that they might find their way to the wrong hands.

The Marawi relief mission may not have been a huge one in terms of people reached, but it was huge in terms of the

OBJECT OF ROTARY

The Object of Rotary is to encourage and foster the ideal of service as a basis of worthy enterprise and, in particular, to encourage and foster:

FIRST: The development of acquaintance as an opportunity for service;

SECOND: High ethical standards in business and professions; the recognition of the worthiness of all useful occupations; and the dignifying of each Rotarian’s occupation as an opportunity to serve society;

THIRD: The application of the ideal of service in each Rotarian’s personal, business, and community life;

FOURTH: The advancement of international understanding, goodwill, and peace through a world fellowship of business and professional persons united in the ideal of service.

The Rotaract Club of Makati (RAC Makati) was the recipient of 12 awards—yes, 12!-- at the 2017 District Rotaract Conference Awards Night held on May 27 at St. Nicholas Restaurant, San

Rafael, Mandaluyong City.Most notable among our harvest of awards was the district’s

most prized and coveted -- the “Most Outstanding Rotaract Club - Gold”—which we won among 78 Rotaract Clubs in D3830. This is the seventh time that RAC Makati has received this distinction since it was revived in 2006 by the Past District Rotaract Representative Cathy Gonzales.

Here’s the list of awards we received:

· Most Outstanding Rotaract Club - Gold· Most Outstanding Rotaract Club President*· Gold Award- Community Service· Gold Award- International Service· Gold Award- Professional Development Service· Gold Award- Public Image· Silver Award- Club Service· DRR’s Citation· All Star Award for hosting the Year End Review· All Star Award for hosting the 2nd All Star Presidents Meeting· All Star Award for hosting the 2nd District Meeting· All Star award for hosting the Presidents and Secretaries

Training

None of these would have been possible without the assistance of our sponsor club, the Rotary Club of Makati (led this year by President David Ackerman) for the untiring support for

all our projects and activities. That is why we always look with gratitude and appreciation to RC Makati for all its support and that of its generous members.

RAC Makati would also like to thank the Rotary Club of Manila Magic and the sister clubs, friendship clubs and non-Rotary organizations we have worked with, for their partnership and the fellowship they have shared with us.

As we face a new Rotary year, these awards will serve as inspiration as we strive to continuously deliver meaningful service to the people we serve. Cheers to a wonderful All Star team!

“amazing and fun night.” Your presence, he stressed, is a sign of support for PE Jun Jun and his team.

The guest speaker, Ms. Dinah Salonga, co-founder and managing director of YogaPlus, shared how her passion for yoga led her “to the path of mindfulness,” that is, to live her life in the moment, focusing only on the now, not on the past nor on the future.

A certified facilitator of the mindfulness-based leadership program of the Asian Leadership Institute, Ms. Salonga walked us through the four leadership lessons she teaches,

Lesson No. 1: It Is What It Is. Projecting our expectations of people, in particular the people we hire, often leads to problems. When we them to conform to who and what we thinks they are or should be, expecting to reshape them into what we think they should be and refusing to accept them as they are, we set ourselves up for problems. Managers

Flashback ....................................... from page 4 should learn to accept people for who they are.

Lesson No. 2: Listening. A leader should learn to listen, to give the other person his undivided attention, to really listen to what s/he is saying without interrupting him/her. Listening mindfully to the other person is honoring him/her; it is giving them their space and their time, it is being present for the. The ability to listen is useful not only for work but in our personal relationships.

Lesson No. 3: Managing Your Emotions. Defining emotion as “energy in motion,” she underscored the need to release energy, which could be positive or negative, and the need for a leader to manage, not control, her emotions to get the results s/he desires.

Lesson No. 4: Self Awareness. A leader should know who s/he is. Knowing one’s self is knowing your strengths as well as your limitations. This self-knowledge leads to clarity, allows us to accept our selves and to make plans that have a good chance to succeed.

Ms Salonga also asked the Rotarians to do exercises meant to put to practice each of the lessons.
