ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS

I want to start by thanking my supervisor Ste-phen Peter, for all his guidance and support throughout this project and over the past 3 years while completing my degree. He has been there since day one, helping and encour-aging me, providing creative criticism and giv-ing valuable feedback to help me achieve the best I could, all which has played a crucial role in guiding me to complete this project and also my degree. Thank you very much…

And a very big thank you to my tutors, Robert Walsh and Gavin Hoggan. And also to all my past tutors.

To Robert, I have to say that without his help, I could not have done this, the time he has spent helping me and teaching me is very much ap-preciated. I have learnt so much from him, things that will help me later on and I will al-ways remember. His advice on how and what to do on my project made my life a lot easier as opposed to what it could have been.

To all my colleagues, thank you all very much for all your help, comments, thoughts and feedback. You have all been amazing to me throughout this whole degree, and it too is something I will never forget.

To my client, Albert Chahda, I want to thank him for his time and giving me the opportunity to work on his project.

To all my family and friends, I want to thank you all very much for your support, from the time I began this journey until I finally complet-ed it. You all stuck by me and put up with all the complaints and stressful periods. But you pushed and encouraged me to get through and I’ve finally done it. And especially my parents, who played the biggest role, your prayers and encourage-ment, meant the world to me and I wouldn’t be where I am if it wasn’t for you both. I am forever grateful…

1.1- OVERVIEW

PAGE 03

Image 1.Exterior side viewof building.

The demand to visualise a building in 3D is slowly becoming more and more popular.

But what’s even more popular and is taking over the world as the new way to view things is the 3D where you need the special 3D glasses to watch a movie. All new movies from differ-ent genres are now being shown in 3D. Com-panies are now starting to bring back the old classic movies and release them in 3D, New TVs are developed to accommodate for 3D movies, and we now have the option to buy either a normal or 3D movie.

So for my graduation project I have taken what has become popular in the design industry and in the technology market and combined the two together to create 3D stereoscopic visu-alisations, where you need the blue and cyan colored glasses to view the image.

I have chosen visualiastion for my graduation project as I have always had an interest in how it works and always wanted to be able to do that sort of work. But instead of having the standard visualisations, I added a little spice

THE PROJECT

Page 14: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

1.2- AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

The aim of this project is to create 3D ste-reoscopic visualisations for the clients design. Standard and 3D renderings of the interior and Exterior of the building, internal furnishings and lighting, In doing this it gives the client an all new way of experiencing and visualising the building. Standard renders will help the client to connect and understand more about what is being built, but in turning the images into stereoscopic 3D it will stimulate excitement for the clients as they are able to see what is going to be built in a different and more interesting way, although the still images are also avail-able.

This won’t just help the client but also future employers as it is not the same standard style of images that are used everywhere else, but rather something more interesting and excit-ing.

1.3- PURPOSE AND MOTIVATION

The purpose of this project is that 3D visuali-sations are the future of the design industry, and creating that image for the client to see is important as it helps show what your design is going to look like pre development, and plays a big role in selling your design.

I decided to take it a step further and create 3D stereoscopic renderings. Where the rendered image is in 3D and you require glasses to see the image like you would to watch a 3D movie.

My motivation comes from the increasing de-mand of clients wanting to visualise what the end result will look like, so I believe in getting that high resolution image is one thing but to achieve it in 3D would be different and some-thing new and very interesting considering that nearly everything else we view is also in 3D.

So after contacting many different companies and explaining to them what my graduation project will be, close to all of them were inter-ested and keen on the idea, as some were too busy to a client, others couldn’t allow there de-signs to used and many other different reason. I approached GRAM Constructions and offered them my proposal as a graduation project which they were happy to accept and help out.

So I received all the design drawings of this building in Bondi, and as it was already built the Director of GRAM Constructions, Albert, said that he would be happy to see the finish project and what it would look like. So I pro-posed to him that I make some design changes and different modifications but still deliver the 3D stereoscopic renders which he said was fine. This was a good motivation to show him

2.1- INTRODUCTION

Image 2.Lounge room withstairs to penthouse.

I chose to do research on these precedent studies to help me in having a better under-standing of and the ideas on how to go about this project. They were carefully thought out and selected so that each precedent study had some impact on the final presentation.

Precedent Study 01 – “Standard Rendering” is a look at someone’s personal portfolio of a ren-dered image.

Precedent Study 02 – “Mental Ray VS. Vray” A comparison in the two types of rendering en-gines used in 3DS Max, this study takes a look at different images with both having being ren-dered in Mental Ray and Vray and discussing the difference found.

Precedent Study 03 – “3D Glasses” is a research about the different types of 3D glasses out on the market. I look into the type I will be using and also the other types such as the glasses we use in the cinema and the type made for the new 3D TVs.

Precedent Study 04 – “3D! For or against?” ex-plores the world of 3D and whether the hype is all worth it. I go through a video made for people to think that 3D is all a shame.

Precedent Study 05 – “3D Movies-Saw 7” I go through a movie that has been filmed in 3D and explai n what makes it so good to view it in 3D, as well as a list of movies that were either filmed or converted to 3D.

Precedent Study 06 – “3D Converted Mov-ie- Cloudy with a chance of meat balls” I go through a movie that was converted into 3D, and compare it to the 3D movie.

Precedent Study 07 – “Anamorphic Art” I ex-plore an amazing form of art using chalk by an artist called Julian Beever, he’s know all around the world for his drawings, he brings 3D to an all new level.

Precedent Study 08 – “Architectural Photogra-phy” I explore how the work of a professional photographer can help in me producing my rendered images.

2.2- STANDARD RENDERING

PRECEDENT STUDY 1

While searching for 3d renders I came across a wide variety of different types of renderings, ranging from poor to realistic. But I found a website which shows the portfolio of a gentle-man whose name is Fergal. Fergal is a senior FX artist, meaning he will have experience in visu-alization. I thought this will in some way help develop a system to collate all of my grad pro-ject work in the one place for ease of access.Looking at his renders, I found one that I thought was interesting enough to do my study on, He has a rendered model of a double storey house, not sure what rendering software he used but I’m going to assume it could and may have been done in Archicad. It’s not very re-alistic but I think he could have done more to improve the image.

My opinion is that it is not very appealing; al-though he has done enough to create the 3D render to maybe be shown as a draft for the client.

But my belief is that rendered images are used to help the client understand what the building will look like before it is being built, so stand-ard renders are ok for quick drafting to show the client and ascertain if anything needs to be changed. Ideally renders must be something special and exciting to look at.

Image 1-Precedent Study 1

PAGE 08

Page 19: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

PRECEDENT STUDY 1

Whereas this render I thought he has used non stimulating colors with minimal texture applied to the materials. Such as ; on the top roof it looks very flat and 2D like also with the paving. The bricks on the side turned out good along with the window sills. However I do not believe yellow is an ideal color for any house. Using these colors makes the house look like it’s from a cartoon. Choosing the correct colours is im-perative as it plays a vital role in presenting the work.

In addition I thought the angle in which he has chosen could have been adjusted better, hav-ing a more angled image allows for more de-tail, allowing shadows to be seen, as well as an overall better view of its surroundings. I would have chosen a more diagonal view showing the front along with the side of the house, this al-lows for a full appreciation of the house and also can incorporate the surroundings for a better view.

The background I though was a poor choice, also with the fake trees. It doesn’t help the im-age by having a house and no landscaping to complement the image. In having a good back-ground for the render it brings out more of the image and doesn’t make it look too simple. It gives a more realistic aspect, he could have used the actual site in which the building was going to be built, and this allows the client to have real time perspective of what it will look like, maybe even zooming out and showing a car on the road will also help in bringing out more of the house. To support this statement, if the designer placed some solid blocks to show the location of the neighbors, this would have provided an alternative view, and make it look more presentable.

2.3- MENTAL RAY vs. VRAY

It’s something that I was never really sure about, something that gets a lot of people de-bating about it, forums filled with mixed opin-ions, but I haven’t had the opportunity in which I would be able to use both rendering systems and compare the two. I’m talking about Mental Ray and Vray. The forums didn’t help me in deciding, as It was a mixed decision with many people hav-ing different opinions, saying that Mental Ray is a true stand-alone renderer that can be used with various 3d applications(Maya,XSI,3dsmax) It has its own scene description format where-as Vray is a plugin renderer for 3dsmax with-out any of the above features. Some are saying that Vray is quicker and easier to set up for high quality images. ing the standard mental ray.

Most people who use Mental Ray say that one reason for not using Vray is the cost and the fact they are able to produce good images us

Two rendering systems that are both very com-monly used in the industry so to help me in un-derstanding which is the better out of the two, I have found rendered images that are placed side by side, one of Mental Ray and the other of Vray. In comparing different images used by both rendering systems I can then gain a better understanding for myself in which according to me delivers the better result.

The image below is rendered by TwinShock, it’s hard to compare between the two, and Twin-

Image 2-Precedent Study 2

PRECEDENT STUDY 2

PAGE 10

Page 21: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

I personally think that they both look good al-though comparing the two I think that the first image (Vray) looks better, it makes the room look more alive than the bottom image (Men-tal Ray), It has more light flowing through the room giving the objects more color and pre-senting detail a lot finer.

The wooden furniture in the Vray image looks more realistic also how the sun is actually seen on them with a shadow being cast from the door, as to the bottom image, there is light coming through the door but no sun or shad-ows. The plants look more real in the Vray im-age with light hitting the leaves. The Vray im-age shows more detail on the couches making them look like real comfortable leather, also with the picture frames, the Vray image shows the light hitting the glass compared to the Mental Ray image where the couches look very stiff and the picture frames on the wall look very dull.

The light seems to be coming through the right window better in the Vray image, as opposed to the Mental Ray image the window looks very flat. The corridor to the right is rendered much better in the Vray image than the Mental Ray image, There seems to be no depths in the mental ray render.

The 6 hour difference in rendering time really tells the two pictures apart when paying atten-tion to detail, although I think if the Mental Ray image was to be shown separately it would be a different story, as it is still a very good render.

PRECEDENT STUDY 2

PAGE 11

Page 22: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

This image below which is rendered by Three-degree03 is also hard to compare but I think that the Mental Ray picture looks more realis-tic than the Vray image.

In this Picture the Mental Ray image shows more detail and better lighting quality with clearer shadows. The glass door in the Mental Ray image shows detailed glass and thickness to the door, whereas the Vray image the door looks very transparent. The wooden bench in Mental Ray is showing true color and detail to the wood also having the sun bouncing off it gives it a more realistic look than the Vray image where the bench looks to too plain.

The Vray image has a more fantasy feel and looks more animated compared to the Mental Ray image which has a more realistic feel to-wards it.

In this image the Mental Ray render turned out to be much better than the Vray image.

So in conclusion to this comparison I would think that it is all up to how you set up your image to render, The person in the first picture could have been more advance in Vray where-as this Person seems more advance in Mental Ray, but seeing different images of Vray and Mental Ray I would be going to use Vray, I think it is very powerful and can produce very realis-tic renders.

Page 23: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

3D is becoming more and more popular and increasingly growing in technology and the main thing that is required to view anything in 3D are the 3D glasses, these glasses come in different types and shapes and each type al-lows you see different types of 3D images or movies. The way 3D works is that each eye is viewing a different piece of information, which then tricks the brain into thinking that’s its only one thing.

ANAGLYPH

The most common type of 3D glasses but very old is the anaglyph glasses, these are the glasses with the two colored lenses, the left is red and the right lens is cyan (blue)

Anaglyph is a 3D image created from two sep-arate photographs taken approximately 6cm apart. This is roughly the distance between the human eyes. When looking at an anaglyph photo without glasses you can see the red and blue filters, but when you put your glasses on each eye is viewing one filter which then tricks the brain into thinking it’s a 3D image.

I have used this type of glasses before and it doesn’t always show up in 3D, it all depends on the type of glasses and also the images pro-duced that have the red and blue filters. I’ve noticed that sometimes the eyes cannot focus on some images, it’s either the way they have been produced using the filters on that photo or the type of quality of the glasses, and some-times you can still see

the filters even though you are wearing glasses, which is based on how the filters are placed out in the image.

But like anything it comes down to the quality of the glasses, this certain type of glasses come in either paper or plastic and can even been made at home using cellophane, from my ex-perience the home made glasses are nowhere as good compare to the paper or plastic made glasses you buy, but quality wise, the profession-al plastic glasses provide a much better view of the 3D image.

PRECEDENT STUDY 3

Image 4-Precedent Study 3

2.4- 3D GLASSES

PAGE 13

Page 24: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

Although the one thing that is disappointing is that once you buy a TV, it only comes with 1 or 2 glasses, so that means having to buy more to accommodate for more people.

Also active shutter glasses made by one manu-facturer cannot be used with another manu-facturer’s displays. That I think is a good thing, it’s good because each company uses different technology although they are similar they still have a slight difference, and generally most people will buy their own favorite brand.

But some people are saying it’s bad because they can’t buy other cheaper brands to use which I think is not needed, it’s the same as saying you want to use a XBOX controller to play on a PS3. They are both consoles but with different technology. There all TVs but different technology.

ACTIVE SHUTTER

This type of glasses is the ones used on the 3D TVs. They work by showing an image to one eye and blacking out the lens of the other eye, so each eye is viewing a different image, our brain then translates the two slightly different images as one 3D image. This effect happens very quickly and is unno-ticeable to the human eye

Reading up about them, some people say that it slightly darkens the image, I own a 3D TV and I have to disagree with them, I haven’t noticed anything like that.

Also some say that a disadvantage is that the flickering effect can cause some people head-aches which I do agree with as my brother was complaining about having headaches while watching a movie where as I didn’t really feel it, I felt a slight strain to my eyes but no head-aches.

Another disadvantage is that some glasses are expensive, depending on the brand and qual-ity, prices ranging between $30 - $200 each, and they are battery powered, so you either have to charge or replace their battery, but I guess it’s just like anything else with technol-ogy you have to charge the battery. We have to charge out phones, tablets and laptops so I don’t see it as a big problem like most people make it out to be.

Image 5-Precedent Study 3

PRECEDENT STUDY 3

PAGE 14

Page 25: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

PASSIVE 3D

This type of glasses is the ones used in cinemas. This technology works by displaying images at the same time for both eyes. These glasses have a polarized filter on the lens; they then fil-ter the images sending one image to each eye.

An advantage in using this type of technology is that these glasses don’t use the active shut-ters, so there is no flickering that can cause you headaches.

However there are disadvantages to way the glasses are made, the polarization limits the viewing angle.

So the viewer must keep their head straight while watching otherwise they will not work. This is because the way the technology works is by sending images through horizontally. I have noticed that where I will be in the mov-ies and once I turn my head I have to take the glasses off and put them back on for my eyes to adjust again.

The viewing angles of the image is small, it is only about 5 degrees from the center of the image. Which is why this technology is only be-ing used at the cinema where the screen is very large and has no effect no matter where you are seated?

In conclusion I think out of the two that is used in today’s technology, the Active Shutter and Passive, They both have pros and cons. Al-though I think the Active shutter is better and more advance, because when watching a 3D Blu-Ray movie on the new LED TVs, The quality is far better than the movies, and with technol-ogy getting better by the day the glasses and TVs will only improve.

2.5- 3D! FOR OR AGAINST

Even though my project is about using the 3D technology and creating 3D images, I found this video which made me think about the whole 3D idea.Is 3D as amazing and spectacular as it is made out to be? Or is this video fake?

I personally enjoy watching movies in 3D; it gives you that feeling and experience of the picture coming to life, out of the screen and as if it is right next to you. It shows the movie in a different way, an experience that makes watch-ing movies more fun. Although I must admit that some 3D movies don’t have the same ef-fect as others, which are usually the movies that have been converted from the original 2D to 3D. But Movies that have been filmed using 3D technology are amazing to watch, the likes of Avatar, I thought was really good.

It seems that the creator of this video wants us to think that all these companies are taking ad-vantage and fooling us with a technology that we see as mind blowing, making it out to be a technology that that has us wasting our mon-ey for wanting to invest in it.

It has been marketed aggressivelyby the big companies such asSamsung and Sony who have a lot ofmoney invested in it, and a lot ofpeople think it’s just a gimmick forthose companies to make more money.

However, I’m sure you can agree that 3D can enhance movies in a way that elevates it be-yond “gimmick” status.

I was at the stage when 3D had just come out and I thought that it was all just a fake, until I went and experienced a 3D movie which then had me totally convinced and wanting to see more, And now that I have invested in 3D TV, I think it’s one of the greatest piece of technol-ogy on the market,

Right now I think it’s a more a debate between the generations, you either love technology or hate it and for the people who aren’t used to it or don’t like it, I think it’s a matter of time where most people would agree that 3D is not just a gimmick but worth investing in it.

It’s very similar to DVD and Blu-Ray. DVDs were great when they came out but now the Blu-Ray Disc has come out and is becoming more and more popular and is a much better quality to watch. I personally think that spending money on the TVs and experiencing 3D in HD is money well spent.

2.6- 3D MOVIE- SAW 7

Many movies that are being advertised in cinemas that are 3D are not actually filmed using the 3D technology, and instead are just converted to 3D. People might not notice a dif-ference in the theater but once you actually watch the movie in normal and in 3D you can tell whether it’s been converted or not.

A list of some movies I found off http://www.blu-ray.com/ shows you if it was filmed or con-verted in 3D

FILMEDAlice in Wonderland - converted live actionAvatar Jack Ass 3D Megamind Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger TidesResident Evil: Afterlife Rio Saw 3D Tangled Transformers 3 Yogi Bear CONVERTEDCaptain America Chronicles of Narnia: Voyage of the Dawn TreaderGhost Rider 2 The Green Hornet Cloudy with a chance of meatballsGreen LanternHarry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part II Piranha Thor

A favorite movie of mine “Saw- The Final Chap-ter” which was filmed in 3D. Unlike the other movies of the Saw series. This was the final and best movie they have created, not only was it in 3D but also had more blood which is always good.

(This may be a bit graphic)

The 3D effects of this movie was amazing; from the very first scene showing the first trap you feel like you were actually right there standing and watching it happen in front of you. It felt like you can almost touch them. When the blades make contact with the body you see blood spraying everywhere and it’s as if you get hit with it, as well as the different body parts actually flying at you or just past your face where you move out of the way.

Image 9-Precedent Study 5

PRECEDENT STUDY 5

PAGE 17

Page 28: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

Using that kind of technology really adds more value and excitement to watching movies, it is a true 3D movie that does provide you with an all new way of watching the movie. That effect was through the entire movie so the viewing experience didn’t change.

The image below is from a scene that is full of action. Its part of a car crash that sees many ex-plosions and flying parts, the 3D plays a big role in this scene as it involves you with the action. Everything feels as though it’s coming straight for you.

The 3D makes you feel every piece of action, killing and torture in the movie. You feel as if you’re amongst it all and it makes it feel so real.

The difference in watching it on 3D Blu-Ray compared to normal Blu-Ray is that watching it on 3D Blu-Ray you notice a difference in the quality of the picture is better. It is more clear and crisp in 3D and also the thrill and excite-ment is different because the way the movie in 3D is shown it changes the way you see it, you feel involved in it where you don’t wantto look away in case you miss out.

Watching it in normal mode is just like watch-ing any other action movie. You don’t get the same excitement and intensity as you do like in 3D, nothing is flying at you and making you want to move out of the way. Although it is still the same great movie, the different modes have an effect.

Movies that are originally filmed and using the 3D technology are amazing to watch, it’s what 3D really stands for, and it isn’t a big scam to fool people, you do experience a whole new way of watching movies.

When you go to buy a 3D TV, they show pro-mos made for 3D which allows you to see and feel what it’s really like. And those promo vid-eos are not fake because that’s how it is when you watch a real 3D movie.

Image 10-Precedent Study 5

PRECEDENT STUDY 5

PAGE 18

Page 29: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

A normal movie that has just been converted to 3D to watch on Blu-Ray like “Cloudy with a chance of Meatballs”. In my opinion I think you don’t get that same e``xperience as if the mov-ie was filmed in 3D

Although it is in a different genre than Saw, you can still tell between watching it in 3D and on normal Blu-Ray. My opinion there wasn’t much of a difference, yes the quality was a little better but I got no special effects or anything that would “Blow your mind” It was the same movie with a lit-tle depth added to it, Very similar to watching normal TV and selecting the 3D button on the remote. There was nothing coming at you or fly-ing out of the screen, nothing to entice you or to glue you to your seat and be amazed about the 3D effects in the movie.

There were scenes that looked allot better in 3D, like when they show it raining food, where the sky looked so big and you see the food coming down but the true feeling of 3D just wasn’t there, the food wasn’t falling on you or the splashing sauce didn’t feel as though it was going to hit you, It was just as if you were watching it on normal Blu-Ray.

PRECEDENT STUDY 6

2.7- 3D CONVERTED MOVIE

PAGE 19

Page 30: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

It was disappointing but also shows the quality and difference in a movie being filmed in 3D or just being converted to 3D to give it that atten-tion and hype to promote it.

So many companies are now converting origi-nal movies into 3D for marketing purposes,Such as Disney, Releasing all the old classics into cinemas and making them 3D, although it would be good to re-live the old movies we love on a big screen, The “3D” is just a ploy to get people more into it.

But as far as companies go with converting original movies to 3D, that doesn’t work, it shows very little difference and will leave you disappointed if you are looking for that “3D ex-perience”. And probably with a headache. The movies that are originally filmed in 3D are great to watch but movies that converted to 3D are exactly the same as the original and pro-vide nothing special. So the next time you want to buy or watch a 3D movie, find out how it was filmed so that way you have an idea of what you’re in for.

Anamorphic art also known as Anamorphosis is a type of perspective drawing. It’s a distort-ed image that appears in 3D when it is viewed in certain way. The image can only be viewed from one point and only one person can view the image correctly in its true form at one time.

Anamorphic Art is not the stretching of an im-age although it may seem like that when not looking at it from the right angle. Once stand-ing in front of the image in the right spot, it cre-ates that 3D illusion.

Julian Beever is a world famous chalk artist known for his anamorphic art on the pave-ments of many countries worldwide, the likes of England, France, Germany, USA, Belgium and Australia.

His been drawing since the mid 1990’s, with his drawings his able to create these amazing Illu-sions that appear in 3D on flat surfaces.

The image below is of a large snail climbing a bench, a very detailed and amazing looking drawing. It’s hard to imagine it from looking at this image that he actually drew this from chalk. And with the lady looking back makes it look more realistic. The image looks like it’s been done on a computer.

2.8- ANAMORPHIC ART

PAGE 21

Page 32: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

But this next image to the right is the exact same as the one above except looking at it from the wrong view. This image shows how he has drawn the picture, you can really see how talented this artist really is and how much time and effort goes into each drawing in order to create the 3D illusion you get from looking at it from the right view point.

Here we see as if the image is stretched and distorted, looking very flat and confusing, not knowing what is really happening, but looking at from the right angle makes so much of a dif-ference and brings out the true image.

The image on the right shows a 3D picture of a globe, from this point we see Julian standing on the top of the globe wrapping the banner around it. The size of the image makes him look very small to give the picture more depth and a more realistic feel to it. Although this drawing might seem like its very big in the next image it really shows the size.

Here we can see how his drawing really looks like when looking at from the side. The drawing was 13m long. This angle shows the globe to be flat and very stretched out,

I think this type of drawing is amazing and makes his work very interesting. Here is an-other drawing which shows the picture in the correct viewing point. This Giant is lobster is getting ready to eat a real life baby lying in the food tray. Placing the baby in the food tray gives the photo more de-tail and looking it feels as though the lobster is actually alive and about to eat.

But a totally different picture is shown with the image below. From this angle it’s hard to tell what is really going on and what sort of picture it is. This is what make this artwork so good is that it tricks the mind. Looking at in from one angle is different than another angle. This image really shows how big it actually is, with the baby laying down you it really makes it come to life.

Doing this research on Julian has turned me into a big fan of this type of artwork; I think it is amazing how the mind can be tricked and our eyes to see different things from different points of view. To be able to draw like that with so much detail and accuracy is really something special.

His work takes up to 3 days to complete and because he works with chalk it only lasts until it fades out or gets washed away.

In a chat to a community website, (Art Paper Scissors 2009), Julian said:

“If it rains it means I’ve done a lot of hard work for nothing, but I usually manage to avoid that.”The important thing for me is to get a photo of it at the end. For me, I’m working towards building a photograph as my end result, and if I get that I’m happy.”

Although can you imagine if he used actual paint, and his artwork did last, I think that would be cool. To walk around your city and see this type of art is something I think people would admire and appreciate the talent this man has.

Architectural photography is not easy and is important for visualization. It allows you to understand and feel how buildings should be presented. It lets you feel as though you are in and around it, which is what creating visualiza-tions aim for.

A very well know professional architectural photographer is Tim Griffith. He has won the award for International Archi-tectural Photographer three years in a row, 2004-2005-2006.

My favorite of his collections would have to be the project he did on the Burj Khalifa. He pre-sents that building so well and in a way creates a Story Within his photographs. Starting out taking pictures from far out to see the whole building and working his way closer to it till his inside and looking outwards.

The first 3 photos feel as though he has taken a picture in the different times of the day which shows the different colors and textures with different lighting, enabling us to have a closer feel to in different times

The image above feels as though it’s taken in the early stages of the evening. With the last rays of the sun shining on the building makes it really visible from the rest.

This next picture below is taken during the day, showing the bright sky with the trees and grass, making the building the center on attention as it is the largest thing in the picture.

This Picture below shows it at the early hours of the morning just as the sun is coming up. All the buildings look the same in color but the shape and size is what stands out.

Page 37: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

But this picture below shows a true reflection of the building, the image of us looking up at it defines the true size and taking it from that close pays attention to detail and I think that a 3D visualization of a building that shows its true character is a good way to present a build-ing.

Going inside the building, this photo below shows the interior from different angles, each angel is showing high level of detail with ma-terials and lighting, this picture provides a per-fect inspiration on how and where to take ren-ders from

2.10- CONCLUSION

The image below again shows a great view and he really demonstrates how big and powerful this building is. A photo showing high detail of the exterior of the building, a view like that to create a 3D render I think can work effectively providing it can provide a result like this.

After viewing the rest of this project and all the others he has on his website, I have to say that it has helped me in understanding how to create different renderings, the different views that can be used, what to show and how to show it, it’s not just a case of yes that angle looks good, it must provide meaning and an understanding to whoever is viewing, try to get them involved in the building.

Apon completeing this set of precedent stud-ies, it has provided me with an understanding on how to take on my project and also gained an different view on the different arts and tech-nology in the current market.

As I aim for delivering the best results for my project, my overall understanding gained from the precedent studies has helped my in deliv-ering this project in the 3D I was happy with.

3.1- PROJECT SELECTION

Image 3 .Lounge and dining with stairs to penthouse bedroom

Our first studio in week one was a chance for us to discuss our proposals that we had sub-mitted over the break before session 2 had started. Getting feedback and advice from the tutors was a lot more helpful than having to wait for the feedback online.

It was a chance for me to explore and expand me ideas that I had proposed, and for that rea-son I had updated my proposals and was the first to have all 3 accepted.

My three project proposals where:Proposal 1 – Real Time VisualisationProposal 2 – 3D Stereoscopic VisualisationProposal 3 – Augmented Reality Vision

So After having all 3 proposals approved I wasn’t too sure on what I wanted to go ahead with, it was going to be between proposal 1 or proposal 2, but I was leaning more to go with

The reason for me to want to do that type of 3D renderings would be because I have not yet seen it before, and I think that it would be re-ally interesting having to wear the 3D glasses to view the images, in addition, it will help me in being able to create 3D renders as well as improve and expand my understanding on how to use 3DS Max.

Having officially decided to go with 3D Stereo-scopic renderings which will require the user to wear the red and cyan glasses to see the ren-dered image,

I did some research in how to achieve the 3D effect and I found a couple of different ways which I explain later on. I also received some very helpful links from a couple of colleagues that helped me out.

3.2- CLIENTS

Contacting people in the building/design in-dustry can be frustrating, as most of them don’t take you serious, and for the ones that do, they assume that you have plenty of time to hang around and wait for them.

I got hold of an ex student who graduated do-ing the same degree, I was referred to him by my tutor Stephen, as this person now runs a visualisation company and Stephen said that he would be a good client, he also helped one student last year, so I got in contact with this person and proposed my idea, he seemed hap-py to help.

So we had organised several meetings which did not eventuate, after a few attempts the cli-ent gave up, he stopped answering calls, mes-sages or emails, so it was time to move on.

My next potential client, a construction com-pany, one of two that I was referred to me by a friend who was in the construction business.

This company is a large and very well known in the industry, I managed to get hold of the preconstruction manager,

He seemed eager to help me in my project proposal which gave me some hope as I was in need of a client; a few emails and phone calls were exchanged, there was plans for me to have a new building design that was they were going to build and wanted me to do the visualisations for them, so after I heard nothing from him and again I had no response to either phone calls or emails,

The next client was also from a construction company and was very interested in my project proposal and handed me plans right away,The client also encouraged me to see what modifications can be made to the building as it was already built. I saw this as great opportu-nity for me that if the client did like what had been done to the building it could lead to a job opportunity, so weather I was to modify all or a little bit, it was a good chance to prove myself.

I kept in contact with my client every couple weeks and updated him on my progress which he had no complaints and was very pleased at the level of work.

This has since resulted in paid work for this cli-ent on an ongoing basis.

3.3- 3D GLASSES

A couple weeks into the project I started think-ing about the 3D glasses I was going to use. I thought in getting this part sorted out early it would save me the stress later on.The trouble was that they all come in different shapes, materials and sizes.

I contacted many companies, as well as manu-facturers in China.I was in interested in the plastic glasses, as they looked better and were more durable. And also wanted my details printed on the frame. So I began searching, contacting many different companies and trying to work out a price that I could afford.

Just about every company I contacted had a minimum order of 500 pieces, I only want-ed 200, which most companies were not in-terested in taking on such a small order, and some said they would do 200 with additional charges that were almost the same price as or-dering the 500 pieces, which was going to cost me close to $400. So for me, it wasn’t worth spending such an amount, so I had to think of another way.

I had many discussions with my tutors about different ideas I can do for the glasses, and laser cutting them seemed like a good idea, where I would design a unique shape, like a star shape for the lenses, and then glue them on myself using cellophane, so I decided to try it at home with normal cardboard and cellophane, but it didn’t work properly and couldn’t see clearly through the coloured cellophane lenses.

I had considered going with the company in China only because I wanted the plastic glasses, but then thought about buying the cardboard glasses instead, as it was more affordable and more appropriate as in people might just throw them out.

So it was then I ordered 200 white cardboard glasses which came within a week, then cre-ated the labels for them, printed them out and stuck them on the sides of the glasses.

3.4- REVIT MODELING

I first used Adobe illustrator to clean up the entire plan drawings my client sent me, I delet-ed all unwanted information to help me read and understand it more clearly.

I then dragged the PDF plans I received from my client into Revit, then scaled them up to the right size and began modeling. I had to create custom walls to match the plans.Modeling the building wasn’t too difficult; I had the main structure of the building in about 2 weeks, and then it was time to start adding the rooms, doors and windows.

I first had a standard size for the doors and windows to give me an idea of what the build-ing looked like, I then had to create different properties for the different type of doors and windows, and adjust the positioning of them to fit properly within the building.

After modeling of the entire building, I started to modify some walls, so instead of having one wall for each level, I made it as one wall that now went up through all the levels. Doing this made the project neater and easier to modify if need, I also found that it worked better when exporting to 3DS Max, as I would only need to texture that one wall as opposed to the many that I had before.

PAGE 34

Page 45: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

It was time to start creating the stairs; I had two sets of stairs to model. One was the spiral staircase for that leads up to the bedrooms in the penthouse apartments, and the other was the staircase in the lobby that leads to the top floor.

I found the spiral stairs difficult to model as I have not created spiral stairs before, it was new learning experience, at first I was making them too big for what I needed and wasn’t sure on how to make them the size I want, so after many efforts at it, I worked out how to scale it down, to fit the size of the rooms.

Modeling the stairs for lobby was straightfor-ward, I knew how I wanted them so it was just a case of working with the space I had, I want-ed to have the stairs come short of the glass curtain, I had to also take into account the en-try for the apartments, although the original plan had the entry half way up a set of stairs, I changed it so the entry was before the stairs, so that it was a clear stairway.

Now in order for me to have the stairs leave a gap at the top I had to make them cut in to the right in order to have space for the entry to the apartments at the beginning of the stairs. The design also had the stairs finishing on the 2nd floor and a void was left at the top, which meant that there was no stairs leading up to the larger penthouse bedroom on the right, so I extended the staircase to the top.

PAGE 35

REVIT MODELING

Page 46: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

Something that didn’t seem to work with the building was the railings I was using, the cus-tom railing I was using was grey with 100mm separating bars, I didn’t like the way it looked so I changed to a glass balustrade that made a big impact on the way the building looked, I also made the stair railings glass.

It was always a case of back and forth swapping between Revit and 3DS Max. Once I thought i got it all working, I would notice something else that needs to be fixed. It’s always the little things that would take up your time that was not needed, example is a wall could be out of line and needs a little adjusting so I would go back to Revit, fix it, export to FBX, delete the existing wall in max, import new wall, add col-our and texture.

It was a process that was repeated several times until i got to the stage where I was satis-fied with it. Working with Revit has helped me gain a bet-ter understanding of; and improved my knowl-edge. That in turn has helped me in continuing to learn the different things that can be done, as well as help keep me refreshed on its magni-tude of applications.

Modeling in Revit was helpful as it worked along with 3DS Max, where I would export the 3D model of Revit as an FBX file and import it through to Max, so if I needed to do any modi-fications after I exported it, I can then export the required part I modified and open in my Max file.

PAGE 36

REVIT MODELING

Page 47: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

At the start I was nervous about taking on this project as my experience with max was to say at the least, elementary at its best, and hon-estly had no idea where to start and what to do. But ever since learning it i always wanted to know how to use it in a more advance way.

Once I got my model into Max I started to ex-periment with different materials and textures, trying to find a colour that would work for me, I finally came across the colours that I used and decided to stick with them.

After that, I had to then add a UVW map to all the materials I was using and adjusting it fit properly by adjusting the length, width and height properties of each texture. This took up quite some time as there were many walls and each wall was a different size, meaning that the texture must be different to match the other walls.

After all the texturing was complete, it was time to detail the exterior of the building, add-ing the landscape, such as the trees, the plants and the grass on the footpath, the street and streetlights.

3.5- 3DS MAX

PAGE 37

PROJECT STAGES

Page 48: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

After that, I went on setting up my rooms i wanted to render, for every room; I would only keep the details required, so for the smaller penthouse bedroom, I would delete every-thing from my file except for anything to do with that particular bedroom. Save that as a separate file, meaning that I can now open that bedroom and having nothing else in that scene, making furnishing and lighting easier to work with. I did that for the other penthouse bedroom and the second level lounge, kitchen and dining.

I found that using an XREF scene was very con-venient and created a much better workflow, it stopped my computer from freezing and lag-ging when trying to move around the scene. An XREF scene can be used with any max file, so saving different scenes / objects in a separate max file can be used in another file which can’t be modified in that scene.

So having already saved a scene as my bed-room, and already have my bedroom furniture, I would then drag the furniture in and set them up where I want them to be, then repeat the process of hiding and deleting the scene and leaving the furniture to be saved as another file, this is the file which was used as an XREF as it already in place. So that way when I open my bedroom scene I can just XREF the furniture into it. Also the fur-niture does not have be visible, as it will only be required when you are rendering.

All the furniture was downloaded as I didn’t have the time to design and model everything I needed, so that made it a little easier as I would search for what I needed, download and open the file, delete anything I didn’t need, change the colours and save it as normal max file, to later merge it in with my main file to become an XREF scene. (A special thank you to my tutor Robert for showing me and teaching me how to use the XREF as part of my project)

PAGE 38

3DS MAX

Page 49: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

There was times where I needed to edit or change colours or materials in my separate scenes, so I would open that particular scene, so if it was the bedroom, I would open the file with the bed and furniture in it. Adjust any-thing that needs to be modified, and back in my main room file, I would just refresh from my XREF dialog box and it would update. I used this method for all my rooms.

Having already set up the different scenes I wanted to render, I now had to place my cam-eras and figure out the angles I want. I used a Vray Physical Camera for all my scenes, as I was using Vray to render so it made sense to use the Vray camera.

After getting all my cameras set I then took these steps in order to set them up for 3D.

-Select move and by “local”, as this moves the camera in the direction it is facing. Then copy as instance, one to the left and right of the main camera. This will create the image for each eye, to give the 3D effect.

-Then link the left camera to the main middle camera and then do the same for the right cam-era.

-Once they are linked, select move and by “Parent” each camera separately and move it in the X direction. In the bottom right hand cor-ner in the X direction type in 3 or 300, all de-pends on the units you are working with. The reason each camera is moved by 3 is because it’s roughly the same distance that’s between your eyes.

PAGE 39

3DS MAX

Page 50: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

After a few attempts and much needed help from Robert, I finally got it working; found out that it was the camera that had a big part in what the render looked like, and that the some settings had to be changed.- F number- Shutter speed- white balance- Focal length

I used a Vray Sun as my light source only be-cause I wanted to have the feel and look of the image being in the day time with the sun shin-ing through.I had to keep moving and adjusting the sun around to see which angel gave a better feel and provided the best shadows and more de-tail to it,

After fixing these issues I started getting better quality renders and had a better understand-ing on what to do. So for every main camera scene I had to adjust these settings and con-duct some low quality test renders to ensure I was satisfied with what the end product will look like.

Another problem I had was with my glass ma-terial, it wasn’t looking like glass rather a very shiny and reflective mirror which was not al-lowing the light to break through (Again thanks to my tutor Robert) I had to adjust the settings for the following.

-Change the value of the reflection-Tick the box fresnel reflections-Change the refraction value same as the re-flection-Tick affect shadows in the refraction area-For the affect channels on both the reflection and refraction is set to all channels.

PAGE 40

3DS MAX

Page 51: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

After changing the settings, my glass was not yet fixed. I noticed that the looking from the outside the light was shining in but when on the inside of the building and looking out, the light was not coming through, it was frustrating not knowing what the problem is but with some help from some colleagues I sorted it out, It was just a case of having to apply that material to both sides of the windows and doors.

I had to do many color changes to my scenes, as well as adding and deleting objects depend-ing on what I thought looked good in the ren-der, along with feedback from the tutors and from some of my colleagues

After completing this assignment and with the help of my tutors and colleagues I have been able to produce work which I initially believed I could never have accomplished, there is still a lot more learning to go and with the help I received from my tutors and colleagues I have grown in confidence and now understand the fundamentals in being able to use this program effectively, which in turn has given me the con-fidence to commence another project.

PAGE 41

Page 52: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

3.6- CREATING THE 3D EFFECT

The way it works is that a 3D image is created from two separate photographs taken approxi-mately 6cm apart; this is roughly the distance between the human eyes. When looking at an anaglyph photo without glasses you can see the red and blue filters, but when you put your glasses on each eye is viewing one filter which is what gives it that depth and tricks the brain which then shows up in 3D

I did some investigating on how to get that 3D effect while watching many different tutorials. I found that watching videos was more helpful than reading about it how to create it. Some even trying to use just the single image which I found that it did not work at all compared to that of two images.

I also found a couple of different ways that could have helped me to achieve the effects I was after for my renders. But the finished qual-ity was not what I was after.

One was where someone had written up a pl-ugin for 3DS Max called “Render 3D” which uses the camera scene you have set up. It gave you a number of different settings and options.

So you would select which camera you wanted and then the type of 3D, it lists a few different types such as, Red/Cyan, Polarized, Green/Ma-genta, then ask to choose the method weather you want colour, grey or half colour. It then ren-ders your scene in stereoscopic mode where all the red filters are already applied. I didn’t like the way the final outcome of this method turned out, as it didn’t take into account the lighting and the final image was very dark.

PAGE 42

PROJECT STAGES

Page 53: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

Whereas this video tutorial I found explains how to do it using a normal camera to take the pictures and Photoshop to make them into 3d anaglyphic images. So I used that method but in 3DS Max where I spaced out the cameras to take my separate images that I needed.

After I rendered the three images, the middle image is the main image that will be used as the standard render. The other two, the left and right images are the ones that will create the 3D effect. To create the 3d stereoscopic effect I followed these eight steps which I took from the tutorial.

1- Open Photoshop2- Drag both images in.3- Copy right image into left image4- Double click the layer5- Uncheck red channel under advanceblending6- Double click the background layer to turn into a layer.7- Drag the red ghost image to align with the centre point of the image8- Crop the image.

I did have to play around with moving the red channel to work out the best effect for that im-age, as it depends on where you align it, if you select a point in the back of the image, it all looks like it’s coming out of the page same goes if you select the point at the front of the image the effect looks as though it’s going behind the screen. So you must find that point to keep it balanced.

After a very long and stressful semester it has all finally come to an end. (The past 13 weeks felt like torture, although within this period of time there were ups but at the same time there were downs where I thought to myself that torture would have been pre-ferred.)

I decided to do this project not knowing what I was getting myself into; it was scary just think-ing about how I was going to be using 3DS Max and what my project would turn out like. I was excited about having 3D stereoscopic images, but I had no idea on how I was going to produce them, I was more worried about creating my renders in max.

Once I got the hang of 3DS Max and sorted out my images I then researched and learnt about producing stereoscopic images. This made me feel more comfortable about the project. As the deadline became closer the more stressful it got and the more worried I became about not finishing, spending hours on end in front of the computer every day for weeks was draining and I’m not sure that I’m still sane. It was tiring and hard work, it seemed as though the work was never going to end.

I remember Stephen saying at the beginning. “We’re going to make you work like you never have, we’ll make you sweat, and probably make you cry to make sure you get a good mark”. It was funny at the time but now that I think about it, he was right, it was all so true.

It was a challenging project and I am proud to say that I completed it. I have gained some great knowledge and useful skills in this learn-ing experience that I will always remember.I’ve developed my ability to use many differ-ent programs to achieve the final result, there is always room for improving and learning, the main thing for me is that I have built up a foundation of skills in which I’ll continue to learn from.

In completing this course I have learnt to always be creative and learn from my mistakes and to always help and encourage my col-leagues. This is what motivates me to want to do better and produce the best work I can.

CONCLUSION

Page 100: FINAL GRADUATION REPORT

In the completion of this project I’m happy to say that my knowledge in Revit, 3DS Max and Vray has improved dramatically. I’ve gone from barely knowing anything in Max to being able to render using Vray and achieve good results.

I honestly can’t describe the feeling of having completed this project, after all the stress and hard work it is now over. I will now take the next big step in life which is to go out there and start working in the field, and to experi-ence what it is like in the real world. I can probably take a stab and say it’s nowhere near as stressful, but I will soon find out.

It’s been an amazing learning experience, from the start of the semester where we had to think about what we wanted to do up until the completion of this project. It has been tough and very challenging but all that hard work paid off in the end.

Having a look back at this whole project that consisted of many hurdles, as tough as it was makes me glad to be able to discuss the things that I have learnt and the experiences in which I have undertaken that will never be forgotten.
